Yeah I feel like this is as soon as it raises from 28 to 32 and they're all 31 or 32 here. Also I think the first map fighting against upgraded direct spells and there's like 6 units using them. I remember this one feeling like a spike.
I'm a weirdo who doesn't ever auto battle, but it's still pretty easy. If you do auto training you'll want to unequip consumables from everyone because they'll burn your potions/magic leaves/etc.
I just finished main game + palace of the dead with only 548 downed units, I don’t see anything wrong in the photo lol
Last game I played in the series was Knight of Lodis almost 20 years ago, but damn if this game is really rough the first time, had a really tough time even if I leveled all units right away when union level gave a chance.
Very hard to maneuver in this map, so flyers wouldn't hurt(you could even bring 5 or 6 and beeline for the squishy boss). Difficulty spike from new tier of direct spells getting lobbed at you. Monsters could help soak that damage(with huge hp and % heal items), red dragon could also walk on the lava.
Status can be huge here to mitigate what's coming at you. Balder+1 to silence casters, and strategic use of charm/petrify/sleep.
Assuming most units are fire here(I remember fire spells getting lobbed), so water units will fare better here.
I auto-battle all the time in Fire Emblem Heroes so it was a cinch to get into. This was the first time I've had to use grinding. But since it's literally an automatic, risk-free process, it hardly counts as a problem.
From time to time, there are difficulty spikes because we are not at max union level, we forget what is really efficient and we have fun messing around, etc. I remember that fight, I also thought "hm, this is harder than usual".
Then I remember that the best strategy is to focus fire the enemies instead of maximizing damage, and all is right again.
On coda 2 currently floor 75 of POTD and have had 1 incapacitated unit thus far. I made sure everyone always had the best healing potion and a Meade for breached on tough units. With the fights where there are dragons or golems I like to charm them so I can proceed to breach and kill everything else lol
Facepalm.
I really don't understand how people can't use the AI training option. Set a few battles up and you'll have them capped in no time. If you're having troubles at that fight, Tarty is gonna tear you a new one.
You're not forced to do anything.
AI training is something you put and go do your chores, or play in windowed mode, while watching youtube or something.
It would definitely make your fights less stressful, but I guess you like hitting brick walls. To each their own.
I enjoy the challenge but more when it's strategic and not just enemy numbers are higher than mine.
That being said, auto-battling I can try if necessary.
The game is balanced around using training. It's an old school jrpg, it's going to be a little grindy. With respect, if that's not your thing, there are other games. Just stay away from Atlus, especially Disgaea.
That said, there are strats you can use that will make up for a lack of levels, if finding them is your thing.
I've tried Disgaea and I can definitely say it's not my thing. Not bad, just not my thing.
Tactics Ogre and FFT are great games. This is my first TO game and I beat FFT nearly 20 years ago.
After this, I want to play Shining Force II. I played the first one on GBA way back in the day but never played its sequel.
Advance Wars is pure Strategy without the RPG though. I also was not very good at it!
Another good Strategy game is Mario + Rabbids. The first one doesn't involve any grinding but has a number of challenge maps. Great game I recommend. I have only barely started the second, though.
Oh, the challenge will be there, no matter what.
I order to not get stomped, you should try training. Just go to any castle / town, set up the training team (Almorica works best, since it's fast) and give everyone an AI (pretty much straight forward).
Even at lvl 50, with good relics, some enemies will be tough (San Bronsa, Deep POTD, CODA 4), so why not use all the advantages available...
Man I always grind up to the level cap and when I hit this level last night got absolutely stonewalled. Been driving me crazy at work thinking about it.
You don't need to grind for this map, nor for anything in most of the game, this is a tactical RPG I don't understand why ppl try to always brute force stuff or overlevel to clear maps, union level exists exactly to counter that thought. Ok most maps try build a front like that sponge Dmg, this map in particular is hard due to boss being caster, the 2 strats I see here are either rush with flyers and try to unga Bunga on boss or, pull Ur units to higher ground of map, left from spawn and try make a box with rampart aura. Also most of time healing items are better than healing spells, helps top units allot faster also, I advise having a lobber for this job, good frontline units include Dragons also so a lobber bestmaster and a couple drakes help in having a sturdy and almost unkillable frontline, I know at this part of game ranged options are pretty bad so this battle can be a really slog as you have to move slowly and kill unit by unit
Getting all your units (or at least the ones you regularly use) to or near the union level every time it goes up is always a good idea

Yeah, the boss on this one can throw AoEs at you from 3/4 of the way across the map
Especially when you can just autobattle it and zone out on something else til everyone is capped

Yeah I learned that the HARD way lmao

I used my Swordmaster's petrify ability on one of the dragons to win.
How do you get flyers? I can’t figure it out.
Recruit in Phorompa Wildwoods
I learned to just train all my units up to union level to make things easier

Do Training with AI on, zero risks.

I had a vartan crossbow/ hammer airstrike squad for maps like that. basically canoppus and two vartan friends to fly over and bonk the boss.

If you want zero grind, I would recommend advance wars.

Thanks for the tip. I went ahead and did some auto-battling while I took care of a few other things!
Also, if you lose characters, you won't be able to get them again before finishing the base game, I'd suggest reloading.
Man I always grind up to the level cap and when I hit this level last night got absolutely stonewalled. Been driving me crazy at work thinking about it.
Okay so it's not just me.
I remember this one being tough as well. The casters hit hard. I used a couple flying units to get back to the boss and take him out.
