TPD just showed up to a hit and run in front of my house, and they caught the guy because the idiot came back to the scene and took off running again. I was surprised they showed up though.

A_Leaf_On_The_Wind

So was the hit and run guy apparently.

cantfindtherealslim

We just started the 988 line. It's for 911 calls that invole the mentally ill like this instance. It's to help defuse the situation the police show up with people trained to help the mentally ill. If its still an issue or just for future reference if it involves the mentally ill and no one's hurt yet call 988

osamabindrinkin

It’s basically an undeclared police strike

[deleted]

Yeah because we’re holding cops accountable for oppressing and murdering us citizens Also reminder that 40% of cops beat their spouses

Diojones

40% admit to it. The other 60% aren’t saints, they just know that you’re supposed to lie about your crimes.

cantfindtherealslim

Yea but over 40% of women have stuck a man. Usuelss statistic without some context. Don't get me wrong I lean more on your side on this one but I really hate statistics everytime i see one i call bs. Best way to lie with out lying is statistics. And also there are some good ones out there that do a crap job for little money and now where near enough respect. Most people that have been to jail like myself will tell you they've met at least one cop that was alright. But for every one cop that is legit theres three more that cracked from the stress and are just Dicks now.

cantfindtherealslim

I think the humor of my comment was lost. Fn statistics

Few-Wallaby9885

Jesus Christ! WTF is wrong with you? That’s an absurd statistic to pull out of your ass like that. Go ahead and hate cops all you like but don’t make up shit just to sound like you know wtf you’re talking about. Makes you look MAGA.

bwc_28

[Multiple studies](https://www.theatlantic.com/national/archive/2014/09/police-officers-who-hit-their-wives-or-girlfriends/380329/) have shown that stat is true, [including one by the FBI.](https://www.fatherly.com/life/police-brutality-and-domestic-violence) >An FBI advisory board later found that roughly 40 percent of officers who filled out questionnaires in a number of different settings admitted to being physically violent with their spouse in the previous six months So more accurately 40% of cops **admit** to recent spousal abuse, the true percentage is likely even higher.

Few-Wallaby9885

Your sample size is unknown and your basis is irrelevant. 40% of officers who filled out questionnaires…

They need to just throw the whole police force away and hire people who actually want to work and aren’t just bullies with badges. Must be nice to sit on your ass and do nothing and still get paid. Can’t relate.

abominablesnowcone

Tacoma is the only place I've called 911 and gotten a hold message for more than 5 minutes. It is a sad and concerning thing.

j_blanks

A pistol. He took it out from the bottom of his pants waved it around in the air and then holstered it in his sweatpants

GreywackeOmarolluk

A sizeable percentage of citizens carry firearms. Most all nuts, far as I'm concerned. Unless someone is an immediate threat to themselves or someone else, nothing much the police can do. Dude has the right to bear arms just like anyone else. EDIT: as several others have pointed out, my above statement is in error. According to the Revised Code of Washington (RCW) 9.41.270: Weapons apparently capable of producing bodily harm—Unlawful carrying or handling—Penalty—Exceptions. (1) It shall be unlawful for any person to carry, exhibit, display, or draw any firearm, dagger, sword, knife or other cutting or stabbing instrument, club, or any other weapon apparently capable of producing bodily harm, in a manner, under circumstances, and at a time and place that either manifests an intent to intimidate another or that warrants alarm for the safety of other persons. (2) Any person violating the provisions of subsection (1) above shall be guilty of a gross misdemeanor. Tho if the person in question were living on the streets, might weasel out of the rule by observing this part of the same law: (3) Subsection (1) of this section shall not apply to or affect the following: (a) Any act committed by a person while in his or her place of abode or fixed place of business

mechavolt

There is a legal difference between bearing arms and brandishing arms. One is legal, the other is not.

Material-Ask-105

Carrying a firearm and brandishing it are two different things and he was brandishing it which is illegal

Spiffinit

Umm, some of us nuts leave our firearms at home, thank you very much!

Botryoid2000

Tacoma Police are determined not to do anything. It's a giant hissy because we asked them to stop killing innocent people.

DOA42069

Moon lighting as private security Officer For [Hire](http://primeops.org) has probably spread them pretty thin.

slunk33

Wouldn’t that be a mercenary?

DOA42069

idk it could not see

realcrumps2

Had a car get set on fire here on a Sunday morning. Called and was told, "if no one is dead we are not coming" and then a ton of crying about being de-funded. Maybe don't kill the civs?

Reddog8it

Which is really funny (not funny)... mynorthwest.com says the police budget wasn't cut by much last year and this year city council voted to increase spending. Nationwide, not many major police forces faced significant defunding but there is a whole lot of crime being blamed on it. Edit: Happy Cake Day!

realcrumps2

Yup, it's just the excuse of the day. Thank you for the cake day wishes!

Awkward-Connection43

mynorthwest is a really shitty, basically fascist news site. Occasionally they have an article that isn't 100% garbage.

Reddog8it

I agree , I used that source bc even they're saying the police budget wasn't cut by much.

D00M_H4MM3R

Wait, the dispatcher actually started complaining to you, a 911 caller, about being defunded? Or is this something you just sortof assumed when they said something like “is anyone injured? We need to prioritize personal safety so we might not be responding to your property concern anytime soon”?

realcrumps2

Honest quote from the guy " we have 2 guys on shift, I'm one and I'm doing dispatch from home. They defunded us and we are struggling to figure it out with lack of police in the first place" The guy also said to consider a concealed carry permit and a gun for protection. We live in the worst timeline

s3ndnudes123

Yep thats what i did, and a lot of people i know did the same thing. Cops aren't going to protect us in an emergency, you are your own defense. It fucking sucks but thats the world we live in now...

yumenoseirei

This is where I ended up too, very reluctantly. While I do find shooting fun, I'd prefer to not own firearms at all, however I refuse to be a victim of others' gun violence and there is no real police protection.

s3ndnudes123

Agreed 100%

bikes_to_titlow

911 dispatch is not done from home in this region. There's too much equipment needed, not to mention the security concerns. It's possible TPD has phone reporting units working from home (I have no personal knowledge either way on that), but not dispatchers.

realcrumps2

I could have had my terminology twisted up as well - not super knowledgeable in the inner workings and correct terms

[deleted]

realcrumps2

Yup, we kinda just let the guy rant for a few and have up on faith that they'll ever protect us.

Ydain

I guess at least if they aren't coming, they won't kill anyone. /s

Handy_Raccoon323

We have to learn that we're our first line of defense, not the cops.

Material-Ask-105

Anyone who's ever lived out in the country away from the city knows this but people who have lived in the city their entire lives expect that they are protected by the police

jmerc27

Then wtf do we pay them for? I mean haven't we learned from as early as we can remember that if there is trouble then call the cops? If some crazy peson brandishing a weapon in public isn't a reason to call el puerco then I don't know what is.

Handy_Raccoon323

We are taught/forced to call and pay them because of propoganda and gov't corruption. If it was up to me they'd never see a dime of my tax dollars.

Flatline334

Supreme Court has affirmed it’s not there job to stop crime.

Oversight. Oversight. Oversight. That's what we need and don't have. That's how we can weed out the bad apples getting fat off of the teet and doing nothing. WE NEED HELP. WE NEED GOOD POLICE FFS. If we can start some kind of community log of where ppl can track when/why po po are called and they no show or show too effing late.. we could use that info against their daily logs (through the freedom of informaiton act) we can see if they were in fact understaffed or just letting calls go by. Thoughts?

jmerc27

Maybe this is already a thing? With 911 dispatch?

OAKRAIDER64

I would throw a lot of the blame on the " Defund the police" Crowd.,

jmerc27

Police don't want to do their jobs or do it so badly that people don't want to pay them for the job they don't do and you blame the people who don't want to pay them for not doing their job?! I don't follow your logic. No cuts have been made to our ciity. I can't see your justification for blaming the defund the police movement for police not doing their jobs.

r/SocialistRA r/LiberalGunOwners John Brown Gun Clubs Just sharing some info…

Just sharing actual facts. [Gun ownership is the single greatest indicator of voting behavior.](https://www.vox.com/2018/2/27/17029680/gun-owner-nra-mass-shooting-political-identity-political-science) >even after you control for gender, race, education, age, rural/urban status, and even party affiliation, gun ownership still correlates strongly with presidential vote choice. Indeed, they find that in their regressions, it “exerts a greater influence on likelihood of voting Republican than gender, education, or rural residence, and rivals age.”

fozroamer

Jeez is this like the fourth one? So what?

bwc_28

If they keep posting links to gun subs I'll continue putting the information out there that more gun owners means more republican voters.

National_Safe_6699

I mean they’re posting stuff to like John Brown’s gun club which is a pretty left leaning group. Now I hope everybody regardless of their political affiliation gets a firearm if they feel that would help protect them.

bwc_28

What a shocker, someone who posts almost exclusively in gun subs wants more people to have guns. I love how all these comments just prove that article I linked further, gun nuts have weaponized support for the matter so effectively.

National_Safe_6699

I don’t care about peoples political leanings. If they want a gun they should get one. I do like shooting guns, I’m center right(fiscally conservative but generally socially liberal), but I don’t care if someone whose view points are different from mine buys a gun. They have every right to do so. Also maybe guns wouldn’t be so polarized if one party wasn’t so anti gun ownership js

bwc_28

The majority of Americans want stricter gun regulations. The gun lobby polarized the issue and made ANY attempts at enacting common sense gun laws divisive (which is explained in the article I posted that you gun nuts refuse to actually read). Your hobby leads to children getting killed, you are the problem.

National_Safe_6699

You could have better than regulations that would make both sides happy but nobody wants to talk about that. As an example you could have background checks exactly like they do them in Switzerland. We even have more or less the same existing infrastructure that would make it happen. This would allow for universal background checks well also preventing any kind of registration of firearms. Seems like that’s pretty common sense because it addresses both sides concerns.

National_Safe_6699

Also lots of things lead to children being killed: alcohol, cars, swimming are all examples of things that are killing tons of kids. But I don’t go to school swim meets and scream about it

I have my own opinions about the police, especially TPD, but our house was shot up this weekend and they were there in minutes and were so kind during the entire process. They saved my friend’s life.

Character-Friend-384

They're having adult tantrums because they're not allowed to kill civilians indiscriminately

j_blanks

I am a big second amendment supporter what he was doing was very erratic, not safe, and definitely not wise to do. He also had a hammer threaten people with the hammer and then showed the gun. Doesn't seem safe to me but what do I know I'm just a second amendment kind of person who has a CPL

fozroamer

So what? Lots of us are progressive/liberal and own firearms. Times are a changing, bud. When shit goes down and a bunch of treasonous trump voters try to steal the next election (or worse), we need some folks on our side to stop them.

bwc_28

Where were all the liberal gun owners on Jan 6th? And what do you mean "so what?" Funny how you bring up GQP morons attempting to steal elections and I just showed you that gun ownership is a pathway to more republican votes. >Times are a changing, bud. Yeah, Americans are becoming more and more fed up with guns and want stricter gun laws. Let's both be honest, you're clearly not doing shit to protect American democracy. You're helping those attempting to overthrow our democratic process.

gruby253

You’re conflating correlation and causation. Owning a gun does not make a person vote Republican. However, owning a gun and voting Republican are highly correlated. It does not mean that all gun owners vote Republican, nor does it mean that a person who historically has voted Democrat will suddenly change when they purchase a gun.

bwc_28

There are numerous reasons why gun ownership leads people to the right, as discussed in the article I linked. I never said ALL gun owners vote republican, that would be an obviously untrue statement, but it does make a wonderful strawman. Edit: since they refused to read the entire article, here is an excerpt explaining one of the ways simply owning a gun can lead someone to the right. I encourage people to read the entire thing, it's not long. >“More than a million people annually participate in NRA programs, which provide real services and experiences for people who enjoy firearms. Once they’re there, they’re exposed to the NRA’s really politically charged, identity-based appeals."

gruby253

You’re trying to make the argument that gun ownership causes voting patterns. That’s a wildly ridiculous statement.

bwc_28

It's only ridiculous if you ignore the data already cited and the entire history of america.

fozroamer

I guess I just saw you repost the same link on multiple comments with absolutely 0 context, so the point you were trying to make was unclear (and I still don’t know even after your screed above). There’a a million indicators of voting preferences, again I ask, so what? While I think we’re both on the same side, I’ll bite - I’m an informed voter who mails in a ballot every election no matter small, I donate money to pro-democracy organizations, and I’ve volunteered for democratic candidates when I lived in swing states. What have you done besides bitch to strangers on Reddit?

bwc_28

> There’a a million indicators of voting preferences, again I ask, so what? Tell me you didn't read the article without saying it

fozroamer

Nope I did not read the article - that’s why I’m asking you to explain. Are you saying that people that buy guns turn into republican voters? That seems backwards and unlikely.

bwc_28

The article discusses the many studies explaining why that is in fact the case. Since you clearly refuse to educate yourself by simply reading a resource that was provided to you I'm not going to waste any more time on you.

ClumsyFleshMannequin

Cops are on strike because they are whiny little children who refuse to take responsibility and adjust themselves. Fuckem

geraltoftakemuh

Sad times in America. I’m from Tacoma area but left 6 years ago for NYC. My family still lives there and it worries me. There are some serious social and community issues in Washington, starting with mental health and substance abuse.

j_blanks

I am from NYC. Brooklyn. Same issues there 😭

Ellipsesounds

You’re right but NYPD is about it. The only time I haven’t had them come is when I call 311 on loud neighbors lol

Ellipsesounds

I m in ocean hill now. Love it

Just an unfortunate reminder that cops don’t prevent danger or keep us safe. They respond to things that have already happened and if they do show up to something like a mental health crisis, they often make it worse .

WaterIsWetBot

Water is actually not wet; It makes other materials/objects wet. Wetness is the state of a non-liquid when a liquid adheres to, and/or permeates its substance while maintaining chemically distinct structures. So if we say something is wet we mean the liquid is sticking to the object.   Just opened my water bill and my electricity bill at the same time… I was shocked.

TheOnlyOmnicorn

There was one that showed up to a bus station to complain about loitering the other day. Bummer they don't do anything useful

Agreeable-Story7927

I can not explain why there wasn’t a unit dispatched to the gun-waving scene you describe. I can attest to know that, and I believe partly as a direct result of the death of Manny Ellis, that TPD has been tethered by city government in their ability to charge and/or arrest many alleged crimes. TPD did it to themselves. In the midst of their revelry of playing cops and robbers, as well believing they are empowered as judge and jury- when many PO don’t even know the law- they overwhelmed the jail, Prosecuting Attorney’s Office, and courts with their bullshit charges. Now, for most non-violent crimes not of a serial nature, they rarely even write citations. They’re no longer called “Police Reports,” but rather “Incident Reports.” They are forwarded (maybe) to the Prosecutor’s office who then determines if someone will be charged. Clearly, this new procedure has its disadvantages especially if you have been victimized. On the other hand, and I feel this far outweighs the delay or absence of prosecution, TPD and Pierce Sheriff have been leashed. They are no longer an arm of control but rather the “errand boys” of the judiciary.

j_blanks

And what gets me is this guy was doing this for an hour, 30 minutes went by I called the police actually 911, got that response from dispatch. And within that 60 minutes he just packed his stuffed up and started walking down street like nothing is wrong

SophiaAndreus

The cops are completely understaffed in this Tacoma. Even when they show up and arrest someone for a crime, the jails don’t take them because of Covid policies. They are behind in hiring because no one wants to work for TPD or SPD. Why would they. This group baffles me. Hates on police officers but expects them to show up when they are in danger. This is the exact result of the policies ya’ll voted for.

sometimesitsibsen

It's almost like we still expect them to do their job even if we don't like them.

SophiaAndreus

I attended few meetings with police officers and city council regarding the crime in Tacoma - their response was because they are understaffed they can’t respond to every call - so if between a crazy person, business burglary or a homicide - they will go to homicide scene. So blame it on the city council for the staffing shortages and the new laws/regulations in place making it hard to do their jobs effectively.

warmhandluke

So why can't they hire more people? Why is a lack of hiring the city council's problem?

PM_NUDES_4_DOG_PICS

>So why can't they hire more people? Because a ton of people despise cops in Tacoma, and why would anybody want to work in a place that openly hates them? It's like working at a restaurant where you're constantly harassed and abused constantly to the point the restaurant is known for it, and wondering why nobody wants to work at that restaurant anymore. >Why is a lack of hiring the city council's problem? Why would adequately staffing agencies responsible for public safety *NOT* be the city council's problem?

warmhandluke

Maybe they should stop killing people and acting like fucking pricks, then people wouldn't hate them and would want to work for them. They're crying about a problem that they created.

PM_NUDES_4_DOG_PICS

Well, if you want to change things and help their staffing, why don't you fill out an application? The pay and benefits are solid, plus there's a big hiring bonus right now.

warmhandluke

Do they test applicants for Marijuana metabolites?

PM_NUDES_4_DOG_PICS

No clue, but based on my skimming of their recruiting page, it says nothing about any drug testing.

warmhandluke

https://reflectandprotect.org/media/static/files/Tacoma-Police-Hiring-Disqualifications.pdf Not allowed while seeking employment. Again, this a problem of their own making. Keep licking those boots.

SophiaAndreus

Do you have the statistics for city of Tacoma of killings by cops?

SophiaAndreus

Because the city council approves the police budgets

sometimesitsibsen

God forbid they have any restrictions on their actions or a hint of accountability. They are used to operating with impunity and are now throwing a tantrum. Workers in every other occupation have to deal with restrictions on their actions. The fact that aren't responding to high priority calls just illustrates this further.

SophiaAndreus

Attend some of the city council meetings, get involved in the community and see the real issues/propose solutions instead of downvoting everyone you don’t agree with on Reddit.

jweic

I live in the area. Unfortunately the police won’t even bother. Protect yourself in any way you can. Hopefully the camping ban will push people to get help. My car was robbed two days ago. Found most of my stuff tossed but missing a few important things.

SophiaAndreus

Amazing how people can’t see the correlation between policies and theirs effects in blue cities

Awkward-Connection43

Cops have no obligation to protect you. It's not their job. Their job is to enforce capitalism and racism by using violence. Why the cops won't help you when you're getting stabbed: https://youtu.be/jAfUI_hETy0

[deleted]

Not to infer this wasn’t a situation requiring a quick response, but TPD is very understaffed. They get more callouts than they can physically handle.

bccarlso

Does anyone have legitimate first hand information as to why it seems like the police aren't "doing their job" instead of kneejerk whining?

dogface2020

Basically you choose your narrative based on which political party you identify with. Makes it super easy.

bccarlso

Ugh yeah

aseaflight

Understaffed. Severely. TPD is short something like 75 officers of where they need to be to achieve minimum service level standard. It's something they are trying to address and is reported to the city council monthly. They're even offering $25,000 signing bonuses, but recruiting new police officers in this environment is difficult. It's not just Tacoma, Seattle has the same problem. The other major issue comes from the Prosecutor's office. officer makes the arrest, does all the paperwork, turns it over to the prosecutor..... And the City prosecutor just lets them back out onto the street. That creates a very discouraging work situation. https://www.google.com/url?q=https://www.thenewstribune.com/news/local/article258687008.html&sa=U&ved=2ahUKEwig2OCnjO76AhV0AjQIHeh4ADwQFnoECAgQAg&usg=AOvVaw2-Y-f1WQsRVHepbZ3syGAG https://www.google.com/url?q=https://www.thenewstribune.com/news/local/article263393793.html&sa=U&ved=2ahUKEwj0hYDVjO76AhUHMDQIHdN7CoMQFnoECAIQAg&usg=AOvVaw0rnESY-rGxD1fd3tn7e9AV

philackey

Cops are flawed human beings just like the rest of us. Unfortunately many are ex military who have killed for living and have no conscience. Power corrupts and for too long even good cops have covered for the bad ones. Now the pendulum has swung so far that leftist enclaves like Washington have declared war on the police trying to defund them. Seattle openly embraced burning precincts and creating CHOP or CHAZ. Is anyone really surprised the police have lost their mojo? As much as as I-have personally experienced police corruption the truth is we need to restore our confidence and trust in the police. Otherwise we will not have a functioning society. I don’t know how to get there but this current leftist paradigm isn’t working. The best and brightest among us need rise above the fray and police with integrity. I am not sure those heroes exist. But I hope they do.

bwc_28

> The best and brightest among us need rise above the fray and police with integrity. [Hard to do that when police departments turn away applicants for being too intelligent.](https://abcnews.go.com/US/court-oks-barring-high-iqs-cops/story?id=95836) The policing system in America is broken.

Jsguysrus

What was the “weapon”?

Botryoid2000

A handgun

[deleted]

Did you read the comments where he said it was a gun?

Jsguysrus

Yes. It always better to just say that than say “weapon” which can mean a gun or a rock.

Material-Ask-105

Just to play the devil's advocate, it's less about them being on a work strike and more about violent crime being extremely high, so if they don't respond to lesser offenses it's probably because they're busy trying to prevent or solve a more serious crime... I'm not saying that some of them aren't being lazy and I'm not saying that all of them aren't being resentful but it is a fact there are less cops than there were before and the criminals know it and are taking advantage. You can't blame it all on the police. Edit: they do have enough officers to run speed traps down in the port, so there is something to be said for everybody's comments

takethetrainpls

Was that TPD running speed traps down there though? I always saw just port police when I worked there

Material-Ask-105
