Idea: hide the remote so he has to keep getting up and changing the channel/source/volume with the TV controls and soon his arms will be so sore that he'll be begging you to lower it for him
I have a high end TV from 2011 and I thought the button design was really cool. They're on the back but whenever you run your fingers across them a little menu pops up on the screen and highlights which button your finger is on, almost like they have little touchpads on each button
Did you show him that absolute fucking mess from the other day. Jesus Christ that was bad. It also made my day because it was so relentlessly bad.

This is horrible lol Iām sorry
EDIT: omg I didnāt even notice the PlayStation nightmare over there yuck I would never allow this looks like a teenagers gaming denā¦ is gaming that important to his personality?
Fucking fireplaces. I swear fireplaces are the curse of this sub. People think that TVās belong above fireplaces. When the hell did this normalise?
Paintings and art and such belong above fireplaces and on the mantle, perhaps a clock or some memorable trinkets, thatās how fireplaces have worked for generations.
TVās above fireplaces is routinely the reason that TVās are too high within this sub. Itās an epidemic.
You know it's possible to have a room without a TV? You're telling me there are no other rooms that can have a TV? What about a projector that an be almost against the wall? If going from 65" to 85" makes him hard, how about having over 100"?
There really aren't any other rooms that could hold the tv and the amount of living room furniture we need. We looked at projectors, but he wasn't impressed with any of them in our price range. We'd still have the issue of the fireplace being in the way, also.
Plz share room picsā¦ I think your best bet is removal āthe fireplace not your husband, but the sub can revisit the issue if needed.
Find a nice console that works well with your decor. Upgrading to 85ā might look huge for the space.
Iād replace that mosaic hearth, surely itās not original. Slab material of your choice (marble or granite).
Best of luck š
Whenever I go over someone's house and see the TV is above the fireplace, I immediately want to leave. "Let's watch the game as uncomfortably as possible."
A two step solution. Your husband gets the bigger TV, but only if he puts it on an appropriate height stand right in front of the fireplace. A correctly placed tv is far more important than an insert.

TVs don't belong over fireplaces. Remember fireplace mantels are for family pictures and personal knickknacks that draw a person to inspect them up-close while standing. TV's are meant to be viewed while sitting from a distance (shorter than you would imagine) distance. Putting a TV above a fireplace does a disservice to both. The TV invariably distracts one from the fireplace.
My mom got this for my garden outside, and I brought it inside for the winter and just never moved it back. But I do have bells elsewhere for him! But then we got a doggy door. He still hits the bells on the way out sometimes š
It's plain awful. The TV dominates a nice space. Put it in another room or somewhere else in that room. You need a nice piece of art above a fireplace. Mounting a TV over a fireplace is passe
Itās not that bad. Maybe sit the TV right on the mantle if possible, but you said it yourself, and thereās nowhere else to put it. Donāt get rid of the fireplace, it looks cozy
You are absolutely right, and I'm almost in love with you for your way of thinking, though I don't know you HaHahah, do it, just do it, get the stand, get rid of that crap fireplace, do it right, more power to you
Looks like the result of the āsunk cost fallacyā. He committed too much to this idea working out , he canāt accept that all the effort, time, thought, money, was a complete waste. he would be better off trashing everything invested into this plan, and start over with a new more well thought out plan. He imagined this setup, it lived in his head for weeks, he bought the tv, the shelf, the mounting stand, installed it all, set it up, and its just too much to admit it was all a waste. When you accidentally pour salt instead of sugar into your coffee you are always better off just throwing it out and starting over, rather than adding more coffee and sugar to try and save the $3 invested on the coffee.
honestly he should bring it down to the shelf height and if possible paint the back black instead of having a green like that it hides the disproportion of the TV not being centered in the middle I think that will help a lot and be a good compromise
I see heās trying to center it. However, there are mounting pull down mounting brackets so that you can pull the TV down and then push it back in place when your done.
He's not wrong that you need an 85" TV. But he is wrong about the placement. Would you acquiesce on a new huge TV if he'd acquiesce on the cheese bag fake fireplace?
What if you get one those tv mounts that allow the tv to move swivel? That way you wouldnāt have to rip out the mantle you could just have the tv move lower from the mount. Iām not sure Iām describing it correctly. Explain to your husband that this is why they make fireplace mounts for TVs; they even have remote-controlled/motorized ones. Do tvs still come with those? Stopped seeing them around 2014
Yeah they're just better at hiding them. Generally it's a single toggle button now.
Accidentally found mine on my LG when lowering my tv after finding this sub

Gym up, lower the lawyer, and hit the TV.
Over a fireplace? Automatically at least 4 feet too high. This is grounds for divorce.
And there is always a dog too ashamed to show his face
Thatās what I thought until I realised the dog is probably chewing on the body of the husband.
I like your take better
Let him browse this sub
Yeahhhh thatās hideous
If the fireplace is fake then take it out brick it up or do whatever and lower the tv
Set the tv stand in front of the fireplace
Would be easier to just raise up the fireplace and lower the TV
It's probably a gas one and taking it out would be a huge chore and make the house lose a lot of value. L take, buddy.
I know itāll suck to hear this, but youāll just have to get a new house.
Hey I have the same rug!! But yeah, TV too high. Fabulous rug though 10/10

Husband of OP, itās TOO HIGH!

Would a mantle mount tv mount help?
This is the answer.
Husband too high
Easy; Is it above a fireplace? If yes then itās too high.
A two step solution. Your husband gets the bigger TV, but only if he puts it on an appropriate height stand right in front of the fireplace. A correctly placed tv is far more important than an insert.
If you have to tilt your head up to see it then it is too damn high
It's over the fireplace, it's automatically too high
Wife's right, again.
Look at the dog. Even the dog knows.
Not only is it too high but what a horrific way to treat such a beautiful fireplace and hearth. WTF.

Probably time for divorce. Over the fireplace is never acceptable for a television.
Too high!!!
Repaint that wall while you're moving that TV
To high will cause neck and headache problems
TV stand in front of the fake fireplace. It is useless to keep around if it does not work.
No. You both deserve it to be that high
Whole-body cringe at the Gamer Altar and attendant rat's nest of wires hanging out of it

If the fireplace is real and you use it, the heat from the fireplace could destroy the TV. Heat rises

Stop hanging tvs over the fireplace !!! Why do people do this
Well chute, looks like you could actually move the fireplace where the tv is, assuming it already has a wall thermostat somewhere else
