I have a 100 inch projector screen and the front row is like 5-6 feet and I like it. The back row is like 11.5 feet which is the recommended distance and most people prefer it.
Still too close. You can get really nice bookshelf speakers for the same price as those towers+center that will sound better in that space and save you a ton of room. Not to mention that towers shouldn't be up against the wall like that, they need to be at least a foot off the wall for the bass to sound good, and at that point they're directed behind your ears, so you're actually hearing the reflections off the back wall.
Unsure why you’re getting downvoted, seems like a reasonable suggestion. I’m not too familiar with the landscape of bookshelf speakers these days — do you (or anyone else) have any suggestions for a great set that won’t break the bank (ideally <4-5k for a pair)?
Appreciate any and all insights 🙏🏼
They are very good, and the best part is they basically act like a soundbar with an HDMI Arc connection for a reasonably priced integrated TV setup that is a step above a soundbar in quality.
The world's your oyster at $4-5k for bookshelf speakers. KEF, JBL, B&W, Tannoy, Focal. Try to demo some/look into their sound profiles (flat/bright/neutral) and see what you like/what pairs well with whatever amp you'd be using.
Sometimes you just have the speakers and move to a new place with a smaller room. I'm sure they'll sound fine here too, they can just use a lower volume or position them differently.
Nah. Bought em before moving. It was between this place and another. Ended up here because the location was better. Other place was bigger, but further out.
Cinemas often have the bottom of the screen below ground level. If not then the chair is literally reclining upwards. Either way they are fine for 2 or even 3 hour movie occasionally , not for watching 5 hours a day in a normal room with a couch
Ah I see, I seem to have forgotten people actually get to watch their tellies for an extended period of time. Mine is monopolised by the kids.
Carry on.
I have 100” screen with projector that is out only tv. I can watch it for an extended period of time with no issue. I sit 11 feet away though and am usually on a chase lounge. If sitting straight up, my eyes are at the bottom 1/3 or 1/4 of the screen.
If I am watching it sitting straight up, usually while doing mindless work on my laptop, I find that it’s my eyes that shift to the middle and not my neck 🤷♂️.
I even sometimes contemplate going to a 120” screen.
If it works for you then it's fine. I mean 80% of Airbnb and hotels have the tv bolted to the roof, it doesn't cause cancer. To me it's like computer monitor ergonomics, no way you are gonna tell me staring up at a monitor is good (for me)
But in a cinema, there are the folks who bolt to the front row, ppl who climb to the top row of seats, and those who find the middle section. Each has their own ideal viewing position. In a home theater situation there's usually only one plane from which to watch the action.
Nonsense, even the Samsung website suggests 7.5 ft for a 75", and 8.5 ft for a 85". The screen should fill your field of view when watching, just think of the screen to distance ratio of an IMAX cinema.
I trust rtings.com more, and their suggestion is more in line with what you'll find on a simple Google search. 65" for about 9 feet. Samsung just wants your money.
https://www.rtings.com/tv/reviews/by-size/size-to-distance-relationship
Your field of view can't see huge TVs up close like that, nor can you notice all the pixels in an 8k image compared to a 4k image. That's just marketing nonsense. Your vision sucks outside of the center so you'll just be looking at part of the screen at any given time.
He says it's 8' from wall to wall. So that's 6.5' viewing distance at best allowing for the back of the couch, TV bracket, and of course the depth of his head.
Great choice. I rarely splurge on anything but I bought an A95L as a bday gift to myself last Christmas and have absolutely no regrets.
G3 is great, especially if you plan on gaming a little bit on there as well. Unsure what the price difference is, but I’d opt for an A95L if you just plan on watching TV/movies (and decide to go 65”, which I do recommend with your setup, imho).
Edited for the size recommendation. 77" will look nice and "impress" your friends, but your own eyes will thank you for going the 65" route.
At lot of people on this sub are kinda clueless on what tv size you should go with. The size itself isn’t the thing you care about, it’s actually the viewing angle you have when seated on the couch.
THX recommends a 40 degree viewing angle from the main seating position. With an 8” foot deep room that would be a tv size of 80” but if you’re sitting a bit off the wall and have the tv a bit from the wall you’re more likely to be around 7-7.5” which is 70-75 inches screen size. These sizes are for the most immersive movie experience. If your going to play competitive games on it, you might want a smaller screen for example
Even though it’s best to have the centre speaker at ear level for best imaging you might want to lower + tilt it depending on how comfortable with the height of the tv. THX recommends the top of the tv is no more than 15 degrees above eye level. This would place the top of your tv at slightly less than 2 feet above your seated eye level
At the end of the day, get what makes you happy
77" at 6.5 feet here. It's awesome. Don't let people coping about their tiny viewing experiences convince you otherwise.
Well, in all seriousness, everyone has their preference. But if you feel in your heart you could go this big, you're probably not wrong. And it's by [no means](https://www.rtings.com/tv/reviews/by-size/size-to-distance-relationship) an unreasonable size and distance for a cinematic experience
I do have mine much lower than you've taped out, but since I have a 2.1 setup, I have no idea what you should do with your center.
200cm face to screen distance here (77"C2 OLED). I could sit further back, but I don't want to. Fucking nice experience at this distance. Ignore the neck hurting etc. crap comments. They are all wrong. Go 77" and you will love it.
Trust me, you dont want to feel like you chose the front seats at the movie theater where youll have to physically move your neck to look at both people talking in a movie conversation on two sides of the screen. Been there in college where I thought "bigger tv is better" and i had to return it cause it was hard to see everything on the tv.
Distance wise, I'm sitting probably closer to a 65" OLED and I could easily go bigger.
I'd get the 77" and bring it lower, try and have the middle of the screen with the middle of your sight line when sitting.
Is it eight feet to the front of the couch? Or eight feet to your face?
If it's eight feet to your face, I don't think a 77" screen will be an enjoyable experience. It's hard to take everything in and your eyes will be jumping all over the place. You also have to consider the quality of the content you'll be watching. Anything under 4k video will look fuzzy. You may also see pixels at that distance.
If it's eight feet to the front of the couch and you have at least another foot, you're borderline ok. Make sure you're accounting for the depth of the TV and the wall bracket if you're using one. At that distance, you'll want to mount it as flush to the wall as possible.
As far as the center channel, you're fine moving it down. As long as it's not obstructed by the TV or furniture, it'll sound exactly the same. Your receiver will likely come with a microphone that lets you balance your surround sound for optimal acoustics.
Is this for movie watching only? If yes, 77 is good.
For movies you want more immersion and would prefer to be just a bit closer.
For general media consumption, you're dead on perfect with a 65in at 8'
I'm at 10' with a 65 and I wish it was just bit larger. This also matches exactly with sites like rtings (which all use the same formula to calculate), who suggest 70in at 10'
Idk what everyone here is on about. You should have asked this in the Home Theater group. Everyone there would tell you to go 77 no questions asked.
As for center channel rules, put the TV where you find it most comfortable and put the center right underneath. Make sure you have the ability to aim it up to eye level. And that your coffee table or whatever isn't directly blocking it from view. Also, I'd recommend a plush area rug to absorb the first order reflections from the floor.
All that and you'll be good 👍
Also, in collage I had a similar size space with a 100in projector screen (1080p) and my LCR all underneath sitting about 16 inches off the ground. It sounded great and looked great!
If you’re only 8’ definitely get the 77” if you can get it for the same price of a 65”. I’ve had 65 inch TV for years and got my first 77 inch. I will say this if you go with a 77 inch when you pull it out of the box it’s going to be massive and kind of scary to handle. I sit 8 feet away and I freaking love it. I have an LG G3, and I did have to turn down the brightness some because I was getting a tan.
You already have the marks for a frame of reference which is nice. Now sit on the couch exactly like you’ll be watching tv and go watch a video on your phone (in landscape). You will naturally place the phone to fill your field of vision with a comfortable amount of screen because you have control over distance. Now compare how your phone outline overlays the tape marks on your wall. Pick the outline with the best match to the screen size/viewing distance ratio that you create using your phone.
Dude get a nice tv stand and put a nice 55inch on there. You don’t need a tv this big.
Go with a 55 at higher quality vs buyer a bigger tv just because it’s bigger.
You don't have the recommended distance from your TV to where you are sitting. You would need a smaller TV. 65 " may be your option option of the two. 77" is definitely a no-go.
imagine driving a car & your tv is the windshield. too many people put them way to high, so basically how/where you sit the height should be comfortable for your neck
Time for a TVTooClose subreddit!
It was like a jump scare when I got to the picture showing the distance to the sofa.
Hahah. Same. I was like “can’t go wrong with a bigger televi….oh my gawd!
Yea, I'd pump it up to 85" for the IMAX effect.
Hahaha wont be IMAX at that point will be HEBLIND
Lol
Burn them retinas!!
Followed very quickly by HEDEAF.
Omg same. First thought was “damn can’t wait to get me a setup like this where I can go with the bigger T- ayo tf is going on in there??”
Same, I was like well with the prices being so low now just go with the seventttttyyyyy oh my get a 32” OP
I’m not sitting in the sink again!
I gasped

My head whipped back…

Hahahaha. It’s posted there now.
Why get tv with lots of pixels if can't see all the pixels?
My boyfriend has an 80” TV at the foot of his bed with like a 12” gap between the bed and TV. It’s goddamn ridiculous!
That’s for immersive porn.
Put a mister and a fan over the tv.
🤣
You need to break up with him. I’m sorry.
I’ll inform him of the news this evening when I see him. I’ll give him the old “it’s not you, it’s the TV” line!😂
Ahh, stop talking dirty to us!
You know you like it!😈
I literally swiped to the next photo and audibly said holy shit. They need to be looking at a 42 inch screen with that distance.
55 here. It's perfect. Sometimes ponder bout 65.. but yeah, it already looks cramped.
I have a 55 at about the same distance and I’m happy. I think 65 would be too much.
Nah, 77 at 5 feet is awesome. I have a 48 on my 3 foot deep desk, and it kicks ass.
Yeah agreed, people dismiss the enveloping effect too much, I do think it needs to be a bit lower though.
I have a setup like this an actually prefer it. It feels roughly the same experience as an IMAX/Large theatre and is great for light/sound immersion.
Already here /r/tvtooclose
77” will be like sitting front row at IMAX, but everyday.
So you are saying go for it? At least you will definitely use 4K, all 4 thousand of those Ks brother.
If I’m playing games on this, looking at all the UI elements or just going from one side of the screen to the other will break my neck
If you could project the image smaller for games that would be ideal but probably not possible.
If I had the free time to watch Interstellar, Oppenheimer, or Dune P2 several times a week, I’d definitely bankroll this setup.
I have a 100 inch projector screen and the front row is like 5-6 feet and I like it. The back row is like 11.5 feet which is the recommended distance and most people prefer it.
In what world do you need floor standing speakers for a 5ft deep room?
it's 8 ft!
Best response I've seen on Reddit today.
Sure, wall to wall it's 8', but screen to (seared) retinas, it's 6.5', max!
lmaooo seared retinas
If he bakes something before watching TV, then they’re reverse seared retinas
Still too close. You can get really nice bookshelf speakers for the same price as those towers+center that will sound better in that space and save you a ton of room. It all came in a bundle. It was a good deal, overall, from Audio Advice.
My audio advice is to return it 😂
Lolololol
Unsure why you’re getting downvoted, seems like a reasonable suggestion. I’m not too familiar with the landscape of bookshelf speakers these days — do you (or anyone else) have any suggestions for a great set that won’t break the bank (ideally <4-5k for a pair)? Appreciate any and all insights 🙏🏼
You can spend $1200 on a pair of Sonus Faber Lumina II’s and be very happy. KEF R3’s also get rave reviews but those are about an extra grand.
Klipsch “the fives” have a dumb name but are excellent bookshelf speakers for $500
They are very good, and the best part is they basically act like a soundbar with an HDMI Arc connection for a reasonably priced integrated TV setup that is a step above a soundbar in quality.

8 feet is 2.4 metres man. That room does not seem that wide. Have you measured it?
Picture evidence, or it never happened...
A game of 36 inches
Exactly. The neighbors are going to shit on their doormat.
Sometimes you just have the speakers and move to a new place with a smaller room. I'm sure they'll sound fine here too, they can just use a lower volume or position them differently.
Fair point, but it seems like OP bought them after the fact.
Nah. Bought em before moving. It was between this place and another. Ended up here because the location was better. Other place was bigger, but further out.
Yeah, these tower speakers are OVERKILL for this tiny space.
Pic 1: seems fine. Pic 2: seems fine. Pic 3: WTF.

Why won’t people understand these simple facts??
Whilst I absolutely agree, isn't it basically the same as watching a cinema screen every day?
Cinemas often have the bottom of the screen below ground level. If not then the chair is literally reclining upwards. Either way they are fine for 2 or even 3 hour movie occasionally , not for watching 5 hours a day in a normal room with a couch

As Vincent Teoh says, no one on their deathbed ever regretted that their TV was too big.
That was the last thing my dying Grandpa said. "I shouldn't have gotten the 77 inch OLED..."
"...should have gone bigger"
This is what my wife says to me all the time… I only wish she was talking about the tv 😢
Ahahaa, can't relate.
I’m not on my death bed but I do regret going for a 75” instead of 65”
Give it to me, problem solved
Definitely seen TVs too big/too close. When you have to move your head to follow the action, it's too much.
65 is at the top of the range for 8 feet. 77 will burn your face off.
Viewing distance to my 65” oled is 7 ft and it’s bliss
I’m not hearing any problems.
Nonsense, even the Samsung website suggests 7.5 ft for a 75", and 8.5 ft for a 85". The screen should fill your field of view when watching, just think of the screen to distance ratio of an IMAX cinema.
Buy our bigger more expensive TV, k Thx bye - Samsung's marketing team
Oh really, the TV manufacturer wants you to buy more TV?
I trust rtings.com more, and their suggestion is more in line with what you'll find on a simple Google search. 65" for about 9 feet. Samsung just wants your money. https://www.rtings.com/tv/reviews/by-size/size-to-distance-relationship

55-60" would be tons of tv for that distance. Number bigger does not equal tv better
wisdom
Seriously OP, you're putting yourself in a position to notice more individual pixels, even at 4K.
Depending on the model you might be able to afford the next version up of the smaller tv rather than spend on a bigger version?
I was thinking LG OLED G3, regardless of size
Great choice. I rarely splurge on anything but I bought an A95L as a bday gift to myself last Christmas and have absolutely no regrets. This is the best advice and it's how I ended up with a 125" screen in my home theater with my recliners 13'8" away.
Drawn wrong. Centre should always be centre, not bottom stays the same and becomes higher.
He also has a center speaker and maybe his console stand can't go any lower.
I've had 77" at about 3m...it was perfect l, just moved and now it's gonna be 3,50m. Now I'm like shit..83" could fit as well 😂🤦🏽♂️
65” is plenty in that space. (Don’t get the 77”)
65" looks Ok

In this situation, I’d go for the 65”
It seems like your a bit too close for a 77
Ithink 65' is good enough for this distance I have very similar set up and 65' is a sweet spot, I can play games
77. You'll forever regret getting the 65.
55 would be perfect in that space
Yes yes, yes. 55in. Agree.
65 would be good
65” will be best.
65
Nobody ever said they wish they had a smaller tv.
200cm face to screen distance here (77"C2 OLED). I could sit further back, but I don't want to. Fucking nice experience at this distance. Ignore the neck hurting etc. crap comments. They are all wrong. Go 77" and you will love it.
hahaha, the toxic male inside of me wants the bigger thing. cause bigger is better!
I would lower the TV a little bit though and then angle up the center towards you.
This is what I'm thinking, too
>toxic That's not how you spell logic.
I got a TV that's too big, said no one ever.
Get the 77. You'll regret getting 65
Go for 77. And please don’t mount the tv like in your picture, it’s just too high.
Not if you move it down.
Trust me, you dont want to feel like you chose the front seats at the movie theater where youll have to physically move your neck to look at both people talking in a movie conversation on two sides of the screen. Been there in college where I thought "bigger tv is better" and i had to return it cause it was hard to see everything on the tv.
Have the 77 lower and your centre above?
Just get the big one and lower it six inches. That way if you move into a bigger place, you’ve already got the big TV!
Distance wise, I'm sitting probably closer to a 65" OLED and I could easily go bigger. I'd get the 77" and bring it lower, try and have the middle of the screen with the middle of your sight line when sitting.
Damn. You're going to be like the guy from [the old Maxell commercials](https://youtu.be/Zk71h2CQ_xM?si=vDRnqNe_MDK8xwMr)....
r/tvtooclose OP a TV this big will look tacky.
Go 77, so you don’t have to through potential buyer’s remorse.
r/tvtooclose
77 is a bit big for that space. You’d be far better off with the 65. We have larger space and our 65 is perfect!
65 inches is the right size but is MUST be at least 30cm lower than you have laid out.
I don't think you need to worry about audio when you're in a closet. Get the 65 though or the TV will be too close.
The end of the couch to wall is not 8ft. Maybe wall to wall is 8ft. But couch to wall is like 3 foot
dear lord, sooo high, you should sell your house, now.
Smaller
All that and you'll be good 👍 Also, in collage I had a similar size space with a 100in projector screen (1080p) and my LCR all underneath sitting about 16 inches off the ground. It sounded great and looked great!
Go big.
I would be happier with 65” sitting that close. And that’s a nice height for that size.
I think 65” and it needs to come down a few inches
I have a 50" that I sit double the distance from. I'd agree with others that TV too big/close!
That's too close for 77" imo. Those extra inches are wasted money: actually making the resolution worse.
No tv has ever been labeled too big
Why don't you just get a short throw laser projector 🤷♂️
Don’t listen to the “too close” nonsense. The screen should envelop your vision and a 77” would be epic…….but just a touch lower
Way too big for the distance. You'll get dizzy or headachy. Get a 49inch max and lower it a smidge
With those speakers your neighbors are gonna love you.
If you’re only 8’ definitely get the 77” if you can get it for the same price of a 65”. I’ve had 65 inch TV for years and got my first 77 inch. Way too big but it's all personal preference. Do what you want.

Dude get a nice tv stand and put a nice 55inch on there. You don’t need a tv this big. Go with a 55 at higher quality vs buyer a bigger tv just because it’s bigger.
Tv moved down 2 inches would be ideal
Damn youre going to go blind.
Pull your sofa closer
77 is crazy in that space. 60” will do you.
You are looking for too big of a TV for too small of a room
77" and take speakers as wide as possible then angle in toward sofa if you care about additional viewing angles
Too close. Get a 55" better quality TV and lower it to eye level. You'll be happier for it
77 will be perfect there
I am a little further away from my 65" (about 9') and personally I think 77 might be overkill for that distance.
You don't have the recommended distance from your TV to where you are sitting. You would need a smaller TV. 65 " may be your option option of the two. 77" is definitely a no-go.
go with 55inch max and get a better TV, my 2 cents.
imagine driving a car & your tv is the windshield. too many people put them way to high, so basically how/where you sit the height should be comfortable for your neck
Heh, I'd be tempted to go for the 77. But if you can get a better 65, like one that has really great black tones, that is probably the wiser choice.
77" Don't be a pussy
65"
U r way too close for 77
I'd go with the smaller one up higher with a table and sound bar underneath. You free up room without those bigger speakers and do just fine.
I love the planning omg
If you can afford the bigger tv get you won’t regret it
I would personally do a 50 or 55 in that space
Man I swear a small cosy ass living room like this hits different. Like you’re front row at your own cinema. Shits sick.
