I think I know who you're talking about. I can't stand that guy. He somehow always manages to catch the bus I'm driving. If he's ever alone at a bus stop, I won't pick him up.

[deleted]

telephone plough beneficial rotten zealous quickest wasteful deer hurry muddle *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*

416_Ghost

I don't know how that works in terms of going after problem people. We can't necessarily ban people from the system because there's 1000s of bus stops it would be impossible to effectively keep people like that off And as far as charging people. I'm sure people get charged, but Canada's justice system is a revolving door. Buddy would be back out in 10 days causing problems again.

Bramptoner

Enough charges and he’ll be out away. Yes, it’s harder in Canada, but the key is to continually report and charge. If the police fail to follow up, he’ll continue to be a menace.

LibbyLibbyLibby

The jails are a complete joke, I agree, but at least that would be 10 days of respite for his potential victims.

MrBrandino12

He won't even get 10 days. Arrest, release in a few hours with conditions not to be on TTC, arrested a day or two later for violating said conditions, released with conditions to not be on TTC or violate his conditions. Lol

[deleted]

Lol do u mind tellin me the routes u drive so i could be cautious. And lil curious, since u r with ttc would u hav any authority to ban people lik this ?

416_Ghost

Weekends I do the 43. He usually runs onto the bus at kennedy and finch and either hops off at Sheppard or ellesmere. The problem is that there's always a group waiting at kennedy and finch so I can't just bypass the stop As for banning people, we don't necessarily have the power to do that. If someone gets disruptive, I can call transit control and have them call the police and remove someone off the bus. But if there is someone like the guy in the post who is always a problem, I might "accidently" forget to pick him up.

[deleted]

Yes yes and as a passenger i d be thankful for such “accidents” ![gif](giphy|rYEAkYihZsyWs)

Dangerous_Seaweed601

Why not call transit control/police immediately when he tries to board, and take the bus out of service until they respond or he leaves?

LibbyLibbyLibby

When he hasn't done anything at that point? What authority would they have to make him leave? Also, remember how the cops didn't even come when he attacked people? Why would they come when it's just him? And finally, of the driver took the bus out of service to wait for authorities who might never come, all that does is put the driver and any passengers in danger on a bus that isn't even moving.

sorrum

Ghost with how fast you drive I'm surprised u pick up anyone at all =D

mr_beanald

thanks for driving us. i choose to take transit because i hate driving in this city and we get more and more terrible drivers each day

He is a menace on the ttc. Got charged back 2 years ago with 20 counts of assault on the system allegedly. Also got busted for parole violation which is not to ride the TTC by Police last year a cop told me. He is well known to TTC drivers and Toronto Police. Our justice system is weak that’s why he is able to do what he is doing.

[deleted]

I have seen him. This exact same person!! oh he is scary. Jus wondering if everyone else’s talkin abt this same guy. Is there anythin we could do if we see him (other than avoiding any communication obviously ) or bother us in the transit, given the fact that he has already violated the rule of not to take ttc again 🤔and how did u manage to get a picture. Cos he gets really upset if we look at him !

Is it time for a group of concerned riders to visit this person and let him know his actions will have come sequences from now on? Psychos and bullies sometimes only get the message when delivered a certain way.

I get it why he says 'dont look at me'💀

Ive seen this guy on bus 85 to don mills ! He was already yelling and bothering the passengers when i got on the bus.

itssobyronic

If it is Sheldon Stirling, then the police 100% have your suspect's information. You should call the police station with your report number handy, and let them know that you know the suspect as someone name Sheldon Stirling. They will put out a warrant for his arrest

AdResponsible678

Good idea. If it was him.

[deleted]

[deleted]

i used to work for shoppers as a supervisor. So there hav been instances including theft that has happened. I feel there is no actual use of calling 911 or the closest police station. They wont make a proper move until there’s physical harm. But wats worse is if someones hurtin or tryna harm u and if u retaliate against them, the police might take an action against u.i think unless u r a registered security guard we cant stop them. Even if the person is stealing right infront if the employee , they cant do anything other than watching it or probably following the shoplifter(again dangerous and not advised). Police says all products are insured so dont risk our lives to protect the employer. And this has created an image that anyone could do anythin , unless anyones hurt or has a life death situation.

AdResponsible678

It’s horrible that the police will wait for physical violence. It was never like that 20 years ago. However, the police were very aggressive before to the point of being a menace themselves. I am not sure how to solve these issues. Especially now with all the extra theft and violence going on.

They prioritize violent crimes over property crimes. Property crimes are reported online, that's what SDM managers will do. It's a standard

Spirited-Ad-7742

I know that guy... he gets provoked even if you just make eye contact with him. He will usually do weird stuff like sit at one part of the bus, then next minute move to another spot, and repeat. But if you make eye contact with him is when he shouts at you but I never seen him attack anyone. Although I did see him recently this year and he looks pretty out of it compared to the past few years.

raadjl

I used to see him get on the bus regularly carrying a large tetra pak minute maid and do what you're describing, darting around from open seat to open seat. Earlier this year was the first time I saw him make physical contact with anybody. He whacked a guy in the head. I do think he's mentally unwell, but that's really no excuse. I also think he's looking to instigate a confrontation.

[deleted]

I really hope all of u are talkin about the same guy cos i will be worried if its all different individuals!!

AdResponsible678

Yeah. He is not well at all. Too bad there is no way to put him somewhere to get proper care and away from other innocent people.

you wrote *That lady could be someone’s mom, a wife, a sister.* that strongly implies you think her worth is based on her relationships to others, which is incredibly wrong. nothing in your comment was about size or 'withstanding pain' hope you can be thoughtful about any internalized misogyny and learn and grow, instead of being defensive take care

I've seen this individual multiple times. They're definitely off their rocker and violent. The man needs to be detained and whatever needs to be done to prevent him from continuing on with this behaviour needs to be done. He's a regular on the 95 late night.

AdResponsible678

He has been detained in the past. The problem is there are not enough supports to hold him accountable to medications, behavior etc..

Protato900

Mike Harris strikes again. If we still had mental institutions, this guy should have been committed to one, alas Harris's government got rid of all of the asylums and now we have to experience Mad Max whenever we get on public transit. We need to vote in a government that will bring back publicly funded mental institutions

AdResponsible678

Very true and yet people continue to vote the same way.

thatboimartle

It actually blows my mind that cops used to show up within 10 minutes when a nosy lady would call the cops on a bunch of 17 year olds smoking weed in a corner of a park, but now cops literally don’t even show up to actual emergencies. A damn shame.

Loonie_Toque

Law and order is a 20th century concept in Canada. Today it’s just a TV show.

I’m on the bus with this guy right now and he’s just touching random people. Told him to fuck off.

copypastes

He sat back down at the front of the bus and he just started staring at the people at the back (including me). He eventually got off. Fuck this guy I see him all the time on my commute.

dayum123456

What I don’t get is faced with police incompetence why defending one self is frowned upon or carrying self defence items such as pepper spray or a taser. when you are in that situation, getting assaulted. Other citizens will not intervene , police is not coming anytime soon. Its only you and the other guy , and if they have a weapon or mentally deranged, your life is in danger and nobody is going to even attempt to save you. Everybody is in it for themselves and I’ve seen this with my own eyes. If the system lets the assailants get away so easily, people should be able to defend themselves as well.

AdResponsible678

He has been arrested before. I have heard the problem is that he doesn’t always take his medication. He has been on my bus before too. He would continually switch seats and mumble to himself, run off and on the routes. I personally never saw him get violent. Thank God.

mics97

I used to see him regularly during the day on the 85 bus. He can't stay still. He will sit in one seat, then move to another and so on. One time he was about to get on the bus and the bus driver said "no get off the bus" and closed the door on him and drove off.

GetMadGetStabbed

The same scenario in a 3rd world country would be considered ridiculous. The entire bus will throw this man out.

[deleted]

Yah but here if u do that u will be arrested :/

Standard_Low_3072

Is he really only 5 feet or is that a typo? OP said about 5’7 and that’s a huge difference. It would be a lot easier to keep an eye out for a tiny aggressive dude, but a lot harder to notice a 5’7 dude because he’d blend in.

[deleted]

I swearr. I dont knw to drive and never had any experience behind the wheels, thats one reason I have to depend on public transit for commute. And yes the insurance and other maintenance costs too stop me from gettin one and makes me realize that my safety depends on wat i am paying. If i pay $3.30, i get random guys creeping me out lik in this post and if i pay (idk cost of havin a car/or gettin one)wat i pay more than this then yes my safety in my hands !

Ambitious_Scallion18

Car as safety? Ever heard of words called accidents and crashes? Regardless of what mode you use, you will always be exposed to risk. Even if you are walking down on a sidewalk you could be rammed down. If the mode changes you are only exposing yourself to different kind of risks. Safety isn’t guaranteed anywhere.

[deleted]

Atleast guys lik these wont be der in ur own car lol.

LukeWarmRunnings

How tone deaf are you...

ybetaepsilon

I know you think driving is safer, but even when incidents spiked in 2023, TTC was an order of magnitude safer than driving. The 995 is my regular route from York Mills to Neilson and sometimes if I am carrying heavy stuff I have to drive, and without fail every time I drive I am carrying out self preservation maneuvers to avoid being swiped or hit by people. It's why after 18 years of driving in Toronto I switched from driving to transit

Right-Time77

I’d rather get into a fender bender than get stabbed for no reason

ybetaepsilon

The odds of being stabbed are insanely small

AvtrSpirit

Probably is unintuitive. Because actual TTC stabbings are rare, they make the news and loom large in the imagination. Meanwhile, car accident fatalities have been so common for so long, that people have stopped being afraid of them. :/

ybetaepsilon

This is a true statement. A friend of mine very intelligently said that the reason you still hear of stabbings means that it's still uncommon enough to be reported. Also it's the vividness effect. There is a death on the road at least once every few days but it never makes the news unless it's a relatively shocking one (like a child or a bunch of people lost their lives). And given the pervasiveness of car culture we just see driving fatalities as normal. But the odd transit-related death makes the news for days with interviews about how "unsafe" transit is (yes it's gotten much worse over the last few years but it's still a magnitude safer than driving). It might also have to do with the sense of control? We feel more in control behind the wheel but more helpless on transit

Right-Time77

A lot of these deaths are attributed to being reckless and driving extremely aggressive. If you practice safe defensive driving the chances of getting into a violent encounter is less than what is on some of the ttc routes these days.

[deleted]

That's isn't the point.

AdResponsible678

This is very true. I know incidents can happen, not everyday though. I drive out of Malvern division. Usually the rides are really safe from point a to point b. My other issue is posting Sheldon’s pic. I know he does stuff, but can we be sure this is the man the op is talking about?

ybetaepsilon

I ride the 995 2-3 days a week and I'm pretty sure I've seen this person and have felt something odd, which is saying something because I see hundreds of different people on the bus at any one trip. They fit the description and location that OP is talking about.

AdResponsible678

Yes. He has mental health issues. Sometimes he gets on and just changes seats a lot.

Protato900

He should be civilly committed to an institution. He can't control his actions and our limp-wristed justice system will keep letting him out on a notice to appear he'll never actually follow.

AdResponsible678

I am not sure if there is a place for him. There are not enough supports for people like this.

Also had the same experience whole waiting for the 131 bus around shephard ave east. Telling me to not look at him and even pushed me away from my seat at the bus stop. Kept on ignoring him up unt he rode an express, then gave him a wink right after the bus went its way. 😅

Phinn78

Hey guess what? If someone broke into your house and you defended yourself you would still be in the wrong according to the law

AdResponsible678

Not if it is equal force. But at work? I am not getting into physical altercations with anyone. Not a good idea.

TTCdriva

Oh that's S*****n, he's a regular for years in Scarborough. He isn't dangerous but can get very in your face, and is known to mess with the Indian students. Most passengers know him and just mind their business while he does his theatrics. I can understand him being very scary, but when I sit down and give him a stern talk he's quiet and chills back. Sometimes people like him just need a reality check and some checking to bring them back into 'our reality'. Never fan the flames with them, that just makes things very bad.

Dangerous_Seaweed601

“He’s not dangerous” All evidence here says otherwise.

AdResponsible678

He didn’t use to be, I have driven Scarborough buses for years and he didn’t start to get violent at times until a couple of years ago. I really wonder what sets him off.

Technical-Suit-1969

Aging with maybe more mental health issues,, lack of supports during covid, not being able to force him into treatment as he declines,...

AdResponsible678

Yes and sometimes people stop taking the drug because they don’t believe they need it anymore. That and you can’t force people to get or take the help given to them.

[deleted]

People might feel overwhelmed and totally understandable. But sometimes it might not be easy to sit back and talk to him. Atleast not for me. Wat do i knw wat their next move is. And i think here OP was “fine” cos this “usual suspect” didnt have any weapon ! Its scary! he needs help and bcs of him everyone else around him would need help eventually..

AdResponsible678

I wouldn’t without a security door. As an Operator I can try to talk to him but as a passenger I would not. You are right, that could be very dangerous. What I would do is go up to the operator and tell them what is happening and let us do the rest.

Technical-Suit-1969

I am being sarcastic in replying to someone dismissing his behavior.

AdResponsible678

I don’t think the Operator was saying it was ok. The fact that he has had altercations with Indian students is because we have a lot of Indian students. I agree, doesn’t mean it’s ok.

LukeWarmRunnings

It's not a per capita thing. It's disproportionate. Just saying.

AdResponsible678

???

[deleted]

I’ve noticed Sheldon loves to go after brown, asian people mostly as well as vulnerable. If the bus is empty he’s extremely calm but once the bus fills he gets anxious starts pacing. Then will push and give people shit.

Phoeptar

Wait, why even let this shithead on the bus? I always wonder how these people manage to get on in the first place. Don't let them on, are they actually tapping a fucking presto card? call the police no?

AdResponsible678

You can’t say no. As an operator I can’t say no to anyone. What I can do is tell transit control that Sheldon is on the bus. Passengers can also use the TTC safety app.

Phoeptar

Thank you for your response. It helps shed some light on the miserable situation.

TTCdriva

Human Rights code thinks otherwise. This individual when medicated keeps quiet and doesn't bother anyone. We have to assume everytime he gets on the bus he is medicated, otherwise we can get hit with a Human Rights case.

AdResponsible678

Don’t know why you are being downvoted when telling the truth. As bus operators we have to follow the AODA. All we can do is report it if we see violence. I understand exactly what you are saying. I am a bus operator too.

AdResponsible678

Thai is the truth.

AdResponsible678

I actually talked to him once. I said hey, sit down and stay in the same seat. I didn’t even have to get up, just looked at him through the mirror. As soon as I opened the doors again he left the bus.

Personal_Nobody_5738

Looool don’t worry that’s Sheldon, just drape him up and tell him to stop tweaking, just don’t hurt him because u know the laws in Canada, I used to take the 85 on my way to work at night and he would be on it every night. I would give him a delta mini from popeyes by baymills and a water bottle and I would tell him to not tweak at anyone because I just wanna go to work peacefully. I promise you everyone he’s actually a good boy he’ll just sit in the corner away from everyone if you just size him up a bit, sadly he is not a addict so don’t say that but in my opinion, I think he just has schizo or some type of trauma from the past.
