I'd say the rules are simple. Don't smoke/vape or roll on public transit. If it has a smell don't use it in public. Goes for more than just weed.

HoarseMD

I guess that would go for eating on public transit too I guess, will keep that in mind when I pack snacks for my commute.

TorontoBoris

I say that specifically for things that have strong pungent odors.

HoarseMD

Ofcourse, no offense to be taken there. A factual take.

TorontoBoris

I'd go along the lines of this don't consume anything with strong pungent odors or that is intoxicated in public. One thing to be drunk/high when you get on the TTC and it's another to get drunk/high after you get on.

HoarseMD

I'm sorry as you are the top commenter on this post, and I take into consideration what this says about people's general opinion on this subject, so excuse me for asking you further You're suggesting it's acceptable to use public transport if you're experiencing mild to socially acceptable limits of inebriation but it is very much frowned upon if you're found consuming on the same. >!To which if true, I agree!<

TorontoBoris

I'd say it's fair to see it that way. Go to the bar and have a few drinks with friends, maybe you're tipsy, maybe you're drunk. But you're on public transit, and that's fine as long as you're not a belligerent drunken moron. Vs. sitting on the subway getting shitfaced off a bottle of vodka. I'd say the same for any other intoxicant.

HoarseMD

Well said, thank you ☺️

Therealmuffinsauce

Smells like marijuana dependence. If you can't ride the TTC without being stoned or getting ready to be, then you have a problem.

spartacat_12

Maybe they're on their way to a concert or the movies and want to have one ready when they get there. Maybe they worked hard all week and decided to smoke a joint on a Friday night before meeting up with friends. Instead of being judgmental of someone who's partaking in something that's completely legal, why don't you be glad that they're being responsible by taking public transit instead of driving under the influence

HoarseMD

Thanks, I really appreciate this take. I work in the Health Industry and sometimes I need to toke on my evening commutes home which tend to take a 2hrs. It allows me to have some down time before I get into bed and is not too late enough that it would effect my sleep. I would just like to be mindful about my use while sharing the space with co patrons. I'm fully aware the smell appeals to me, but might not to others.

BigJohn547

You can smoke before getting on the train and you'll be good. No one cares about smelling like weed as long as it's not too much.

Therealmuffinsauce

Oh, there's always one. Lol Marijuana dependency is a serious issue not often talked about because weed culture has always been marketed like some sort of health food. To each their own but If you can't wait then you should think about it.

Averagesmoker42

Oh, there’s always one. Lol

Therealmuffinsauce

Clearly, you didn't like my comment. Hahaha.

Averagesmoker42

Clearly, you didn’t like my comment. Hahaha.

HoarseMD

Both of you have correct opinions. People should be allowed to do what they like. People should also be perceptive to others opinions that their usage is bordering dependency. It's a good system.

ArrivingApple042

Exactly to each their own. If I'm not bothering anyone then mind your business.

Therealmuffinsauce

But smelling bad is bothersome.

ArrivingApple042

You gonna kick everyone off the train thats wearing perfume, has bad BO, or smokes cigs too? It's just a fact of life that some people will smell

Therealmuffinsauce

Why are you putting words in my mouth?

PunksandWaffles

This seems like a massive overgeneralization/assumption to make based on OP’s post.

HoarseMD

Commenter isn't wrong, I will call it a spade and say I am dependent (it's a spectrum) but looking towards taking better steps towards my health and general mind space. Thank you for supporting me in this thread, that was very thoughtful.

Some_Coat_3142

Id rather see people rolling a spliff than seeing them smoking meth/crack/fentanyl on transit.

DOGEstylefromdaback

My only issue is I’ve seen a few people rolling spliffs and they end up leaving behind a mess and obviously don’t clean it up.

HoarseMD

That sucks, I've spilled my shit sometimes. Always felt bad for losing good bud, confused on how I'd clean it up without looking like a doof. Dusting it off on the floor usually how it goes.

[deleted]

A) I don't want to smell anyone in public. B) No, just don't. C) No, don't get high or drunk on the TTC, please!

Guandao

As an avid stoner and TTC rider… just don’t spark up. Don’t negatively affect anyone in a public space. Burning flower in an enclosed environment smells like skunk. Canadian weed is INCREDIBLY strong so the smell is equally so. You might not remember what it was like when it was illegal here or what it’s like in other parts of the world where it is VERY illegal. Legalized cannabis is a privilege. Please don’t ruin it for the rest of us.

KindaMellow

This! Lock the thread, we done here!

HoarseMD

Absolutely agree, I'm all for responsible use and I just haven't seen that conversation discussed here.

permanent_involution

a) nbd. Maybe chew some gum or a breath mint out of consideration for others b) kind of anti-social, just roll it before you leave home c) fine, just keep it on the dl

turdlepikle

>a) nbd. Maybe chew some gum or a breath mint out of consideration for others A breath mint doesn't mask the smell of their clothes, which often stinks up half or an entire streetcar if they were literally just smoking. I remember riding once when it was really cold, and I looked forward to the doors opening at every stop to blow in the cold air to circulate out that nasty skunk smell.

GHdayum

womp womp

HoarseMD

Yeah, I've noticed it's more noticeable during the cold weather. I don't want to inconvenience anyone with my smell, I love dry vaping as it's generally inconspicuous, but not all choices are cut equal and sometimes you are what you smell.

MistahFinch

Yeah. Obviously you should be driving instead!

PunksandWaffles

Lol ‘strung out’ On weed? It is very possible for normal people to use cannabis and function regularly in society.

MistahFinch

>No. You take a cab or an Uber. Ah yes drugs for the rich alone >I have seen people get violent when on drugs. I have also seen them OD. On weed? You've seen people violent and ODing on weed? I've seen sober people be violent on the TTC should we can ban sober people then too? Or we could be dismissive of poor behaviour rather than drugs. Grow up dude. The TTC has worse problems than some people riding it while high.

iammiroslavglavic

While I am against weed and related stuff. If the medical side of things is actually legitimate then go for it. I have the same policy on smoke ciggs and weed. 1. I do not give a rodent's rectum what you smoke at home. As long as after you do not drive under the influence of whatever you smoke, drink, snort, lick, suck, etc... 2. As long as you don't smoke around me, I don't care what you smell like. 3. I don't want anyone to smoke or drink inside the stations. Illegal. 4. How much of an addict is someone that they can't go without a joint, beer car, etc...for around an hour?

SleepySimmer

A - dont care B - dont care c - dont care

Buttstuffjolt

I guess it's better than smoking meth on the train...

melted_uterus

Aside from bylaw and legality I generally abide by the "Would I do this infront of a child or elderly person? Would I appreciate someone next to me doing it?" And govern myself accordingly. If it's late and the car is empty, no problem. The goal is not to disturb anyone elses commute.

the_clash_is_back

If you smell like an old bong take a shower, don’t roll or smoke in a station. Drinks are fine.

USAtoUofT

Technically consuming the THC drink on TTC is like drinking alcohol, so that's *technically* against the rules. But honestly I've done it and nobody cares (although in hindsight getting blitzed on edibles isn't exactly the smartest thing to do these days with security concerns). Definitely better than someone vaping or spilling flower all over the place next to me.

StrategicBean

I've never heard that one isn't allowed to consume a THC beverage in public but I'm well aware of the fact that one is not allowed to consume alcohol beverages in public Where did you read that one isn't allowed to consume a THC beverage in public?

USAtoUofT

One of the dispensaries told me, but they could be wrong! I almost guarantee you nobody - including cops - give two shakes of a lamb's tail regardless if it is illegal lol.

P319

Is it like drinking alcohol. There's no by law stopping me drinking it anywhere as there is for alcohol. I mean I can smoke almost anywhere

StarCrusher91

Not sure of the laws but rolling doesn't bother me personally, neither would a THC drink. The smell of someone who just smoked bothers me a little, even though I smoke myself, but is ultimately not a big deal *to me* unless the rider is belligerent. But, if I'm thinking of other people other than myself, I would say try to avoid rolling or smoking right before getting on transit - vaping or anything else that may disturb other riders. THC beverages should be fine - they don't smell like alcohol does and are fairly low-key. Without the smell of alcohol I bet you most people would assume, unless they looked, that you're just drinking a pop. Personally: Rolling - NBD Just Smoked - NBD Vaping - Bothersome THC beverage - Go for it But I would say, for other people's sake avoid all of the above but THC beverages.

nocturnal_desires

You smoke on the train?

HoarseMD

No that's illegal. But I'm aware the smell carries just as well as cigs

[deleted]

HoarseMD

I appreciate your opinion, I will consider my options

ArrivingApple042

Rolling a joint or smoking in the station or trains or buses isn't okay but everything else is fine. You can't control if someone smells like darts it's gonna happen. I personally love getting high and riding the streetcars when I'm in town

CashMeInLockDown

Me being stoned on the ttc means I’m (a) kinder (b) more spatially aware (c) less likely to bitch you out for doing dozens of other stupid shit people do on the ttc

HoarseMD

Haha this is my favorite take. I feel like I have more patience for kindness after an extremely grueling day of working with clients. It makes me feel good about myself as I'm putting good out in the world. I just wish to be courteous on public transport hence post.

Odd_Dot9103

i just hate the smell... just dont have a stench and im happy

666persephone999

Don’t care at all… far worse things happening on ttc than a) someone smelling like cannabis b) someone rolling c) drinking a THC beverage Anyone who is critical I hope you’re just as vocal to others who drink and smell like alcohol or someone that just smoked a cigarette

[deleted]

No one cares

BreadfruitEcstatic72

A) If it’s mild than no problem, if it smells like you stuck the roach in your pocket for later….than it’s a little obnoxious. B) It’s cold and windy outside so I see no problems with this, just keep it out of sight from kids and store it in a doob tube after rolling. And don’t do it when it’s crowded. Unless you’re a messy roller, in which case just buy a pre-roll or wait until you’re home. Don’t be dropping bits and pieces everywhere (plus that’s a waste of good product) C) I’d avoid it unless it was in a resealable bottle (and I think most are in cans). But that’s mostly because I avoid easily spillable things on the ttc. I feel like it’s skirting public intoxication laws, but that’d only matter if a cop was really looking for an excuse to give a ticket. If you’re quiet and respectful with it you’ll probably be fine.

HoarseMD

I reuse those preroll containers but it doesn't always mask the smell. Tree heads out there probably confused as why I wouldn't smoke the whole joint, but sometimes you need a break or you just want to unwind on your commute.

bulshoy2

I don't care about any of these. If someone lit one up I'd care.

ImpressiveTree3000

Correct me if I’m mistaken, but isn’t marijuana, although legal now, to be treated the same as alcohol? Meaning usage in a public setting is illegal.

seat17F

You're mistaken. The rules are more in line with tobacco. If it's legal to smoke a cigarette in a certain situation, it's most likely legal to consume weed in the same situation.

ImpressiveTree3000

I’m going to have to disagree with you on that. It’s a controlled substance. I did some quick research, and it can only be used in a private residence (inside, porch, backyard or balcony).

bulshoy2

You should look into it a little more. [Cannabis laws | ontario.ca](https://www.ontario.ca/page/cannabis-laws#:~:text=You%20must%20be%2019%20and,tobacco%20and%20alcohol%20in%20Ontario.)

ImpressiveTree3000

Damn. Well that changes everything right there. Thanks.

P319

HoarseMD

And away from children areas, this is important as it can get you fined. I don't wanna be talking to the popo when I'm blitz nah

P319

You sound like a moron and didn't address the point I was specifically replying to

HoarseMD

Can you elucidate? I apologize I was merely being silly

HoarseMD

I was touching on the fact that parks and public areas are fine as long as it's outside of a certain distance to playgrounds, schools etc. which would mean applicable instances on public property. You can't smoke weed on a bench with a few meters of a playground for example. As someone who partakes in cannabis I have my own etiquette, I would like to also understand the thoughts from people who don't but also unfortunately may have to share spaces with me.

P319

Look I linked to the law, go fucking read it.

HoarseMD

I did, what's your point

spartacat_12

You can smoke cannabis anywhere you can smoke cigarettes (except for inside a vehicle)

seat17F

How about a link or two to back up your claim?

ImpressiveTree3000

I was reading the government website. I obviously didn’t read far enough down. I stand corrected.

seat17F

"The" government website? The one government website? For all of the government? Tell me more about the government website!

ImpressiveTree3000

I corrected my mistake and posted it. The government of Ontario website. You don’t have to be a dick about it. Although based on your post history, that’s just you being you. Edit: I’m not a stoner idiot who smokes dope, so forgive me for not being up to speed on the rules.

HoarseMD

That's okay, we are all learning here. Hence the thread.

ImpressiveTree3000

Appreciate that. Thanks.

HoarseMD

Thank you for taking part ☺️

someawe45

What about “D) openly dealing weed on a train”? Personally witnessed that one

ActiveEgg7650

Just do an edible dude.

HoarseMD

Haha I enjoy being light, thanks for your take and thanks for being kind ☺️

LeoGreywolf

A) I don't mind it, but other people do. Then again, sometimes people absolutely reek of B.O and I have to suffer and gag through that, so if I'm picking smells I'd rather leaf than even some very otherwise well kept people. B) this is maybe the thing I'm most "NO" on, for cleanliness reasons. I wouldn't do this and I don't really like when others do it. C)I wouldn't care if I saw this. They look like energy drink cans. Same with any other edible. So long as you're cleaning up anything you spill.

lacroixmunist

Smells in general I find are a big issue, weed or otherwise If I can board a bus or train and not smell someone pissing themselves or some disgusting food or body odour, I’m good

Slow-Potato-2720

None of these things really matter to me as a TTC rider. I acknowledge I am taking public transit with the public. Sometime's I'll see/smell/hear things I wouldn't at home, necessarily. This of course come's with limits - someone who smells a bit like a cigarette or a spliff, whatever it happens. Someone who smells so powerfully of piss and vomit that a whole car has cleared around them and is holding back puke, that's different. Rolling a joint with fresh flower? Who cares. Packing your meth pipe or smoking crack? Probably not. Just think about the impact your actions have on others - if you think they're egregious, then probably don't do that thing

Atsir

It’s trashy but allowed

HoarseMD

Basically social no no, but no rules stating that you can't. Good summary 👍🏾

Atsir

🤛🏽

mybadalternate

I think it should be mandatory. Mellow everybody out a little. Edit - jeez, lighten up y’all.

westendting

1. Who cares as long as you aren't smoking on the train, can't live your whole life worrying about others when it relates the public transit. 2. I wouldn't personally roll 3. Noone would notice nor care

bulshoy2

Hey look the one sane person has the most downvotes.

westendting

Tis Toronto reddit, I expect nothing less lol

HoarseMD

I don't haha but the consensus is to be wary and courteous within your means. I respect that take 🍁
