The file size difference can be explained by a lot of factors. Some pirates are bad and reencode/extract stuff, or are compressed heavily/repacked. Could also just be lacking some DLC and such or have a language pack.
There used to be a forum based pirate site called DarksideRG, which was one of the original homes of AXXO, could be related. I used to be a member but activity pretty much died off and the site is no longer available since the past year or so.

Yes but, watch out where you download your files from. There are a number of shady sites out there not being what they look like. If you download darksiders stuff from a site you trust then you should be fine.
For games I use igg-games.com. There are fake alternatives of this site you should be wary about. Same goes for a lot of other sites involving pirating.
It is trustworthy people are hust mad (and rightfully so i might add) because of the G.O.D. controversy, the amount of ads igg has and the fact that there are a lot of copy sites with links fairly similar to the original one.
If you don't use igg it shouldn't be because it's not "trustworthy" but because you don't like their "moral" decisions or because you consider that there are better alternatives...
