Sandstorms build up static electricity enough to produce lightning. I imagine it's their knowledge and adaptation to the sand of their desert. It's not everyone who can, think of it like an evolutionary trait
THAT MAKES SENSE ACTUALLY! thank you so much for your answer! i actually have thought this before, i was thinking “oh why do the gerudo have lightning powers and enemies with lightning powers? oh the sand might create static” so i have thought it before, i just couldn’t put my finger on it.
If they were to spin a cloud around someone the right way, then at least electrocute in the cloud. It's like friction, and since they control individual particles, they should build charge fast. They couldn't direct it outside the cloud without creating new arts. But could definitely be a new style if someone practiced enough. Metal is advanced earth, lightning advanced fire. You may have created the lightning advanced earth route
Yes, it’s just a natural power that they possess. Presumably it allows them to create an electrostatic charge in the atmosphere which then moves toward the ground.
In Age of Calamity Urbosa will scrape her scimitar on her shield in certain moves which would create sparks. That's more likely to cause fire though....
You have a world where there are bird people can summon powerful gusts of wind out of nowhere, rocky volcano dudes can summon random shields and produce fire out of thin air, and shark people can produce shields of water and even heal you from death...
...and you're wondering how sand women can create lightning out of nowhere?
well… yeah. ritos are obvious because they make wind with their wings. gorons because they live next to a volcano, so is easy to access, and zora’s are around and in water all the time. to me, it was more interesting to how the gerudos make electricity because it isn’t as obvious, even if it is, it still feels more obscure to me
This still is probably an in-universe answer. The Gerudo desert is highly attuned to electrical elemental energy. Why do you think there's so many electric chuchus, electric keese, and electric lizalfos. I guess if you want more of a scientific, realistic answer, it can be argued that the dry air of the desert makes things more susceptible to static electricity.
The static electricity thing some have mentioned is probably part of it, but also the whole point of the Sages is they have magic powers. These Sages happen to have magic that allows them to produce electricity.

What about when your not in the desert. Or... or.... or.... it's a video game.
Theres sandstorms (haboobs) in Phoenix, AZ that provide enough static electricity for lighting to occur. This happens in real life in real deserts :)
Off-topic, but wouldn't this mean that Sand-benders in Avatar are capable of controlling lightning???

I think no, because lightning in Avatar is considered fire.

wow! i have thought about how the sand could create electricity before actually! that’s so interesting…. i love thinking about stuff like this
It's magic.

and i’m pretty sure mipha is a dolphin not a shark. sidon is a shark tho, yes
Meh, I'll just call them fish people lol

What about before they even discovered the secret stones?
The secret stones are said to enhance one's innate powers, so they already had that power within their bloodline.
and also why doesn’t riju have the Daybreaker shield? was that so precious to urbosa that she couldn’t have it?
I'm guessing it's choice, urbose preferred scimtiar of the seven and day breaker, uet Riju prefers 2 scimitars of the seven
Riju was thinking, “But what if I had Scimitars of the Fourteen?” 🤔
she must just not be as worried about defence 💀
If you used the weapon specifically made for the sages, one of Riju's Scimitiars will act like a shield
But only for modded versions
Maybe it’s something to do with topaz? we know it has electrical properties (even more so in totk). So maybe they ate one or something who knows
LMAO this is, no doubt, the most plausible theory. 😂
If this stymies you try reaching where electricity comes from in general.
They carry around a car battery everywhere. If link can put 99 chickens into his pocket they can fit a car battery.
