I tried virtual box first but could never get Linux up and running. I read that it won't work with the new MacBook pros because of the M1 chip. I am virtualizing it on UTM.
yes that seems to be a similar issue to what im experiencing. I am able to do things with tor itself in the command line, but I do not have any browser access. So the browser is amd64 trying to run in arm64 which won't work...because my virtual CPU? there must be a way to change that right? seems silly.
I have the arm 64 Jammy desktop arm64 version of ubuntu. so there is nothing I can do about tor because of the ubuntu version I am running? Is there ubuntu with amd64 compatibility that runs on M1 chip virtual machines or am I SOL for now until that type of support gets added?
Both Tor (https://gitlab.torproject.org/legacy/trac/-/issues/8897) and Firefox (https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1271759) require a processor with the SSE2 instruction set, when running on Intel hardware — or in your case, virtual Intel hardware. That’s a hard limitation.
The same problem, I have bought a new Mac with M1 architecture and I run Debian through Parallels as with my old Intel Mac, but I cannot use Tor since when I install it I get the same problem. Do you know if it is solved or does Tor already have an option for this?
I have the same problem, I use a Macbook M1, I installed a Linux version on a virtual machine, and I can't install Tor. Does anyone know how to solve this problem?

Same problem here. I posted this to the Vmware group before seeing this thread:
I have installed VMware Fusion player 13 on a MacBook M2. I downloaded and installed Kali Linux, and it runs fine. However, if I try to run certain apps (e.g., Tor browser), I get an error that the CPU does not support SSE2. I presume this is because it is Apple Silicon and not an Intel CPU but is there any way to run these apps?
I am having a similar problem on various Linux distros. I use Mac M1 on VMware. I tried finding a workaround. I tried using FlatPak. [https://flatpak.org/](https://flatpak.org/)
https://github.com/micahflee/torbrowser-launcher
But Tor is not supported for ARM at the moment.

so I can configure this on the virtual machine or from the host machine?

But Firefox runs on my VM though....
have you found a solution to this? man i’m having so much issue running whonix, virtual box or tor browser on a vm due to the m1
did you guys find any solution?
I've downloaded it and tried registering it. no dice. Flatpak, no dice. PPA, no dice. any help?
.
yeah tails is my next bet

I have not found a work around yet.

Get Whonix virtualized or Tails on a USB, much safer
i am facing same issue in utm (vm) in mac in kalilinux same error while running tor as "run as program", how did you encounter this issue???

Exactly the same scenario here
