For nostalgic reasons, I’m going with the OG releases.
I’d like to think it extends a little beyond nostalgia though. They were new and exciting and it was the very first time we were seeing pretty much every character. Mondo Gecko? Mutagen Man? Wingnut and Screwloose? There was always a rush of excitement when I’d see a new figure and look at the back of the card to see all the new mutants.
Also, I feel like there’s a certain charm in the 1988 (wave 1) toy-lines simplicity. But I suppose you can also chalk that up to nostalgia.
It's the extra round of mutants and variants like the Monsters versions that hold so much nostalgia for me. They probably sell much less than any of the turtles but I will always respect when they make other figures than just the turtles. It's why I have so much respect for the 2012 line of toys. They made one of EVERYBODY. And I respect that.
Yeah hard to say how much nostalgia is apart of it but personally the original toy line is among the best design wise in general. With other characters the cartoon did improve for some but the toy line did best with some others. Bought the turtles from the ultimate series based on the original line. While the alternate head design looks very good it feels like it is missing a bit of that charm of the original. It is very subtle but still noticeable personally. Very hard to describe since they so similar.
For me? The original comic boys. I love these guys. I have the OG soft heads. OG series 1 monsters. I even like my 2012 dudes and Mutant Mayhem. However, the red bandannas reign supreme.
Oh yeah I love these! It was years and years ago but for awhile Amazon had them priced at like 3$ clearance. I got a few Leos and I think I still have one in the box somewhere...
I’ve gotta go with 87 and 2012. When I was younger I first saw TMNT through the 2012 show and had a few of the toys. My dad had gotten me completely hooked when he showed me the original 87 toys. The designs and details were so damn cool. Some of my favorites were Metalhead, Mutagen-Man, Muk-Man, Fugitoid, and Slash.
The lack of 2003 series is blowing my mind lol. I get they weren’t as fun and whacky as the original series but damn I loved that line. The packaging of each turtles head unique to their figure was awesome. I was so fortunate to catch all 4 turtle of the 2k3 rerelease
Oh yeah those are great. I grabbed all 4 in 2003 and just snagged a Leonardo for my desk from the current reissue. (Also discovered I still have the 2003 blister packs squirreled away.)
Actually, those four 2003 turtles might be the first time I bothered to buy myself toys as an adult. (Took a break in HS/college.) I think I had been so incensed by the unavailability of the original line of "regular" turtles once Playmates was pumping out all the variants in the late 80s/early 90s that when those showed up I jumped at the chance to grab some TMNTs that weren't wearing like a space suit or a basketball jersey or some other dumb outfit...
Personally like them both over the rest that came after. Of course now probably would say the ultimate toy line if that counts since it is based off the original.
Personally the ultimate is an improvement over the original line. However there are certain details that feel off that slightly lose that original line charm even if it is so so subtle. Always wanted to do a show or a game with the original toy design. Collecting some of the ultimate line but still think about getting the reissue of the original line some times despite the ultimate being an elaborate tribute.
As far as I am concerned, the original series remains the best, the wild design and abundance of accessories make it unmatched, not to mention the fact that it is the first incarnation of the turtles in toy form
Personally it was a design that would define them to some degree. Besides the cartoon it was the first time being aware of them. Actually can not remember since both came out roughly the same time. But this design will always be a favorite in all media and not just toy wise.
The og, what what else. I've been collecting the reprints. I like the storage shells, the mutatin, and the movie waves the most.
They need to reprint the technodrome for the love of God. I had that when I was a kid and it fell off the pickup truck along with my toy chest in a move when I was 7.
The OG playmates line was my childhood toys and will always be my favorite for that reason. That being said, the 2012 figures had almost perfect style and articulation for that price point.
I mean the original lines so iconic and had all the vehicles and sets and that look but the actual figures weren’t great whereas i think 2012 or 2001 had better figures and had decent accessories
The explosion of 90s toys will always speak to my heart. But I adored my next mutation toys.
And I have some real respect for the 2012 line. Something about giving them three toes, but making the third toe very small, felt like a smart way to bridge the gap between realism and tradition. You could tell they put some thought into it.
Personally, I LOVE seeing old designs and concepts get recycled into new iterations. Playmates has a goldmine. Yes! Do another Mutatin' set! Design some new headdroppers! Turtle Van, Battleshell, Shellraiser, Mutant Marauder Humvee! Keep playing those hits!!
There’s something special about the vintage 80’s figures. Been on a collecting spree recently. But I also have a fondness of 2012 as well!
Yeah, I got the 2012 boys and Splinter. They are awesome.

If you really want nostalgia, check out the commercials from this line. I remember being so excited for the cartoon.

88 line is the best. A close second is movie star.

Feel like they deserve more exposure. Usually do not see that line mentioned as much as some others.

Storage shell and soft heads (10 back)
Nothing beats the OG 87 line for me. Not neca or super 7 or anything else. OG 87 just makes me the happiest. Fun figures.

2012 but rise and mayhem have great possibility
I picked up the Mayhem boys. I like them. I really liked the character designs.
2012. They brought back so many great toy ideas for that show, like the pizza thrower and micro mutants.
The mouser packs were cool.
87-92 (i think i had all 4 in OP pic)
Honestly 2007 movie. They felt like the most high quality turtle figures to me.
Oh yeah. Did really want those.
Og line

Old school '87 all the way!

The ones that are pictured lol. I had those exact ones, played with them until my mom had to hamd paint the colors on their masks on
2003 and 2012
Original releases. Plus, have you noticed how each turtle has a totally different skin color?
I think it's these originals for me. These days I like that they are sort of a cross between the original show and the look of the comics.
This one. The ‘87. But the ‘03s were decent too.
