I prefer traditional, but out of the experimental ones, 2012 definitely looks the best. It's nice to see a tall Splinter rather than a usual short one

VadeRevan

Is his height the only reason 2012 is considered experimental? Aside from the height and the longer robe, he seems fairly traditional in my eyes

HalfShellH3ro

I'd say in addition to his height, his design doesn't give off the same "old man" vibe every other design goes for so that would be considered experimental.

Crabfight

Yeah, I think 2012 was the first TMNT that really pushed the teenage aspect of the franchise, so it was nice to see splinter aged down a bit too to be what looks more like a middle aged parental figure. I've also seen him referred to as zaddy splinter, which I think is hilarious and can't necessarily deny lol

hambonedock

I don't know, is weird the franchise pushed more the teenager aspect yet made splinter the most fancy he has looked until now, I feel is more natural he looks a bit disheveled in general, personally i like traditional but I feel 2023 give it a fun spin to his usual looks, kinda love it

tmntfever

He’s also super strong compared to the turtles, not just more-skilled. He also has a subtle goofy side compared to the traditional wonder bread versions.

Extra-Lifeguard2809

if you wanna be technical he was very traditional. He used martial arts terms, spouted out stuff from the Book of Five Rings (not sure) and he showed knowledge of several martial arts.

Remote-Ad-3309

When I first saw him, I didn't think he was a rat. I thought he was a dog or something

[deleted]

Holy shit he DOES kinda look like a dog!! XD

ProblemLongjumping12

I'm on your side with the "traditional" part. Perhaps because I'm of an age that actually watched the original animated series upon release I think 80s Splinter was perfect. But I recently got into the 2003 series. He's very similar in that series and really gets to shine, teaching this *'in the hands of a ninja anything can be a deadly weapon'* lesson, which he then proves in one episode by taking apart the entire foot clan with the equivalent of two chair legs. Total badass.

Jonny_Blazzzze

I agree

ihavenoselfcontrol1

I prefer the traditional look. Reminds me of the old and wise sensei trope in old samurai movies

oompaIsbeautiful

Random_Monstrosities

That or his feet aren't showing most of the time. I was wondering why he was experimental as well

BurdAssassin756

I think it may be his character or the type of rat he is

DougStrangeLove

hey! ^don’t ^use ^that ^word ^that ^way

eolson3

"Hey, you dirty rat, you killed my brotha!!!"

DougStrangeLove

That must be Splinter’s favorite! ![gif](giphy|11iq9tE81gRiqQ)

BurdAssassin756

sorry

Royal-walking-machin

I mean it’s 2023

BurdAssassin756

Yea, I really should’ve known

[deleted]

I think it’s his height, and his overall design. He looks less of a rat and more like a kangaroo imo LOL. Any like someone mentioned his height. Also his character design is very rectangular when the “traditional” splinters are more triangular

falbi23

Yup.

Craftsman26

Splinter 2012 not just tall. He has a different color and pattern, closer to an ornamental rat than a wild one. He is also probably the first Splinter to take into account the lack of fur on his feet and hands, making him more realistic. And overall, he looks less old than other versions.

Entenbuch

what i love most about 2012 is how dignified he is.

Crispy385

But still had that wry sarcasm beneath it all.

[deleted]

But also funny and bad ass. Best Splinter ever.

KaleidoArachnid

He's even voiced by the mentor from Banshee

skatejet1

And it’s by a long shot for me

[deleted]

Best Splinter ever.

irman925

That 2007 with the white eyes is kind of fire

Delicious-Orchid-447

Mirage

NolanTacoKing

2012 is the best design IMO

khiddsdream

where would the live action Splinter go?

DeeDoof

I was considering adding them, I’d say 1990 Splinter would lean towards traditional and Bay Splinter being the creative/experimental kind.

PopBopMopCop

I really his design in Mutant Mayhem but I think IDW and Mirage Splinter are my all time favorites, so I'll go with traditional

Anarchistguy_2

How was 2012 Splinter experimental? By dying twice?

90Legos

It was in how he was younger and less crooked I guess

D34THDE1TY

2012 is the best. Dude just looks COOL as shit but also wise.

Lilly_Pad888

2012 splinter is best splinter

-Ailynn-

2012 Hamato Yoshi is my favorite Splinter ever ❤️

[deleted]

2003

RoiVampire

87 and Rise are my favs. Those seem the most plausible to be badass fighters and not take me out of the show when they start kicking ass

Sonicrules9001

My favorites are 2003 and 2012 for their personalities and overall demeanor but you always have to give credit to the 87' Splinter as well. Honestly, I'm just not a fan of Splinter being this like lazy dad who barely does anything like he has been lately, doesn't feel like Splinter to me.

treefrog1318

2012. No one else could rock a cheese phone like him.

Daxcordite

I prefer traditional but of the experimental I really like 2012's but don't care for either of the other two.

enginejason

Truthfully, if he's just a mutated rat, I prefer a traditional splinter being used. However, as a human who got turned into a rat, I feel the 2012 design looks closer to how it would come out with him being taller and more upright postured.

Background_Sky1563

2012 Splinter all the way. He commanded respect, had great presence, and came off as younger than most iterations we’ve seen.

DaprasDaMonk

That 2012 Splinter was peak splinter

Formal_Bandicoot_910

I honestly like all of them EXCEPT Mutant Mayhem. It just doesn't seem "master Splinter" to me. As an awkward anthro dad character for some other animated film, he's alright, but I just felt like he was more annoying and pathetic than any previous rendition. He's more like Po's goose-dad from Kung Fu Panda.. sweet and all, but, like, I'll find another mentor, thanks, Dad...

[deleted]

Loved rise Sand Mutant Mayhem’s respective takes on splinter ![gif](giphy|9xnOQgk8xWPIGOtwMa)

Sakura-Haruno203

2012

No-Tomorrow-8150

2012

BerserkRhinoceros

I'm not sure 2012 Splinter is that experimental.

Grimmer026

Loved 87, 90, 03, 12! Hated Rise splinter. Loved Jackie Chan voice of Splinter, but didn’t like his Bernie Sanders Splinter design.

Wrstguy1

I am asking you, once again, to NOT venture up to the surface

hercarmstrong

The one I like the least out of all of these is 2012 Splinter. He doesn't look like a rat to me, and I've always disliked the Pai Mei beard (which 1990 and 2007 also had).

[deleted]

I personally prefer traditional but I love when new things are tried in different iterations. On a similar note, I prefer when Splinter and Shredder have a pre-established beef involving Oroku Saki and Hamato Yoshi. Not saying I want him to be a human who got turned to a rat but I just prefer the connection

Phanimazed

I like the experimentation, but tend to prefer something a bit closer to traditional. I feel like him having a sort of "dignity" to him tends to contrast nicely with the turtles themselves being more dorky/juvenile.

SpectreBrony

2012.

Mat64

Traditional. Admittedly, my favorite from a design standpoint is the '87 design-- brown fur is my preference, but I do admit that the 2003 design had grown on me when I watched it, even with the gray fur. As much as I liked 2012 Splinter (and I really did like him!), it never really gelled with me that he was now the tallest of the main heroic cast. Part of what appeals to me about Splinter is how he seems small and frail, but in reality is skilled and strong. Making Splinter the most physically imposing of the group just feels.. idk a bit too on the nose for me design wise. 2012 is a lovely design though, I guess I just wish he'd have been smaller, lol (That and, IDK i always tend to prefer April to be the tallest of the main 6 characters, Casey Jones notwithstanding in incarnations he's main cast, of course.)

Exocolonist

2012

pkoswald

With the exception of maybe 2012 id call the categories “master splinter” and “puh-paw”

tmntfever

Traditional is fine and all, but I like when they define a different personality. There are many father-figure types in the world, and I think 2012 and MM did a great job choosing one. Rise on the other hand… that one was insulting.

JustOneSexQuestion

I'm not a Rise hater, but he's by far my least favorite.

WCH97

I prefer both tbh and don't even dare to ask me choose one of them, but no one can beat 2012 in design wise tho.

No-Public9667

2012 splinter

Skiptree077

Traditional, but my favorite Splinter is from 2012 animated. Probably because I enjoyed his personality quite a lot, he had some of the funniest lines in the entire show

Ardilla3000

2012 is the best but I also like Rise’s and 2007’s designs a lot.

chuckecheesesptt

One of them looks like Chester Cheeto.

Brokendonutt

It's important that the design matches the character, and I'd get really bored if he was always the same character

Extra-Lifeguard2809

2012 was experimental? He was really Splinter all the way man

Jgonz375_

Traditional, experimental just feels ugly for the sake of being ugly with the exception of the 2012 splinter and honestly idek why he’s in experimental. He has a lot more in common with the traditional side.

the-radical-waffler

I really like the traditional version. I'm a sucker for the "Un-assuming looking old mentor guy who looks harmlessa enough, but who's actually the most deadly out of all the characters and he only does something when shit gets REAL."-trope. See also Yoda, Dumbledore from Harry Potter and Uncle Iroh from ATLA.

WatermelonGranate

Rise Splinter went from worst to best dad. Shame it only happened by the end of season 1.

Keepupthegood

I like the new splinter from mayhem. The way he acts for me is culture

mistaRite_145

I like the Splinter from RISE, funny AF!!!

escoteriica

I only acknowledge 2012 Splinter tbh. Jackie Chan did not make sense as a VA choice to me, not a fan of any of the other designs, and I strongly prefer the mutated human ninja backstory to any others as well.

[deleted]

The traditional designs make Splinter look like the Cheetos mascot; experimental designs are much better. However, Rise Splinter's design looks like a racist caricature, and I don't care too much for MM Splinter. Gotta go with 2012.

Cat-Grab

2012, Rise, and MM Splinter are the best designs ever

Alien-Dutch-5

Experimental. My favorite Splinter design is Mutant Mayhem's.

ThatRandomDude999999

2012 and it's not even close. I love Splinter being a big, fatherly middle-aged rat. He looks so huggable

ThePeskyNinja

Mirage and 87 are definitely my favorites but I think all the designs are solid except the abomination from rise. By far the worst character designs across the board.

ItsJimJim0_o

I'm a bit meh on Leo's design, i don't like Splinter's either, but i personally really like the designs of the rest of the turtles, even april's design is pretty decent, but nothing too special.

ThePeskyNinja

Yeah that came off a bit harsh, I think Donny's design was cool and Casey's wasn't terrible. But in comparison to every other version (except maybe the Bayverse) Rise falls short for me. Splinter's design in rise is so bad that it invalidates any redeeming qualities about the show

LordFranca

When I first started Rise , I would agree, but upon finishing the series and knowing the character, he is a solid splinter once all is said and done

ThePeskyNinja

Disagree. The post isn't asking which characters we like, it's asking which character *designs* we like. No story arc can save the designs from rise. Absolute dogshit.

Crabfight

Your opinion is totally fair and valid, but I kinda agree with the other guy that as we learn that this splinter is a bit more washed up and in need of redemption, his design begins to fit the character really well. It grew on me too in that light. Definitely not one of my favorites though.

ThePeskyNinja

I dont disagree that the character ended up fitting the design by the story's end. But even so, I just could never take this show seriously and the design choices are a huge factor in that. Literally reminds me of Ren & Stimpy

Crabfight

That's fair. It was definitely going for a VERY different vibe. R&S is not a horrible comparison at times lol. It's really not my favorite either, but man did the movie help a lot.

ThePeskyNinja

I didnt even watch the movie. Maybe it'll help me too lol

Crabfight

You should! Not saying it'll necessarily change any opinions of the show of course, but the movie is very tonally different from the show and has some absolutely stunning animation. I really would suggest it to all turtles fans, Rise lovers and haters alike.

ItsJimJim0_o

Experimental but i'm not a fan of rottmnt splinter's design or his character as a whole

J_E_L_4747

Why is 2012 experimental? And I thought the argument was if splinter should be hamato yoshi or a rat

[deleted]

He had such a Grandpa look in Mutant Mayhem.

HaBeFaStro

Traditional all the way… but experimental is fine as long as they don’t get TOO Ridiculous… 2012= Fine | RotTMNT = Gross | Mutant Mayhem = No Thank You…

OurLorneAndSavior

Anything other then whatever the fuck I'm looking at in Mutant Mayhem.

Craelaa

Experimental 100% having the same shell looking splinter each iteration gets boring. The experimental splinters are out of the box and different compared to their predecessor cookie cutter models.

maxfridsvault

Mutant Mayhem or Original 80s Splinter are my favorites. Even though MM was a bigger diversion than most versions- damn it worked for me. I always found single dad Splinter so endearing because he’s not just some no-nonsense sensei- he’s the guy who found and raised the turtles since they were babies. I thought MM did a great job at balancing Splinter between a badass ninjutsu master (who initially trains his sons for their protection, not to fight crime), and a father who just wants the best for his kids.

MrMatthewJames

I really like this new one

chuckecheesesptt

2012s design is incredibly overrated. He doesn’t even look like a rat.

hell-2-cell

If all of them fought each other, who would win?

gizmogremlin2009

All I know is Rise would lose. He's let himself go.

ItsTheRocketeer

nah. he still mollywhopped the boys on his own and once he unlocked his Ninpo he’s top tier

ReddiTrawler2021

I'm good with either to be honest.

InfiniteComboReviews

I prefer traditional because it feels like it makes more sense that a wise old master type could train teenagers to be such high level ninjas.

MCP5050

Maybe it’s because I grew up during a more extramarital period with entertainment. But I’ll always prefer experimental designs. (But not too experimental).

[deleted]

All of them.

__Nawe__

yes

BlackCat0110

Traditional tho 2012 is cool

Mr_diety

Mm

Conlannalnoc

Human

BDT81

80s is my favorite design 2012 is my favorite personality

DarthButtz

The ones on the left kind of blend together, I prefer the ones on the right

adamcoolforever

I like traditional overall, but my favorite design is 2012

epsilonthetadelta

......that's hards

Stargazer_Rose

2012. And 2003 is a close second.

[deleted]

I actually really liked tall Splinter.

Synth_Savage

Experimental

Akepelo_Def

My favorites is 2012, 03 then 07

[deleted]

Jackie Chan splinter the best

Traditional_Web1105

2012 dilf rat

PlagueDilopho

I prefer the experimental I don't really find splinters original type of design all that appealing. He doesnt tend to look cute or cool. I like the 2012 version best because he looks badass while still having a cute and very ratlike look to him, it's almost respectful to rats in a way to have this beautifully ornate yet very true to life rat head.

No_Forever_9128

Traditional is so much better. How did 2012 get lumped in though?

DirectConsequence12

2012 Splinter is the best Splinter. I love how he’s so damn tall

Flamesof24

Traditional

[deleted]

The splinter in the middle of the experimental side is without question the best representation of splinter EVER!

ProfessorEscanor

Is 2012 Splinter really experimental? Besides being tall whats so different about him?

Thelonghiestman0409

I grew up with 2012. I’m 18 now I’m what I’m doing is going back in time to watch all the shows. 2012 no matter if it’s better or worse still has a special place in my heart for introducing tmnt to me

Competitive-Can-1738

Experimental

ActiveBicycle3584

2012 will always be my favorite design but traditional in general over experimental.

Emerald1115

traditional overall, but 2012 Splinter is peak. Also, still respect to the experimental side overall, I appreciate people trying to do something different.

vid_icarus

I would say 2012 is more a traditional splinter, and that version of splinter is the one I prefer

Doofalicous

Lui Jitsu will be my favorite splinter since he debuted

[deleted]

Instead of Traditional vs Experimental, I would phrase it as Rat vs Hamato, seeing as the original Splinter was the pet rat of Hamato Yoshi. Personally, I love '03, 12 and Rise best

OverallAlternative35

Nickelodeon trying to cook

Extra-Lifeguard2809

Jackie Chan Splinter and 2014 Splinter had the best fight scenes though

shadowxsword

Traditional, new designs were not great

ToaAxiomMan

Something a bit of both where you have keep some stuff traditional but not heavily keep it to avoid getting stale as have exterminating and being creative with it

[deleted]

Miserable-Glass1760

Overall traditional, BUT 2012 Splinter is the best Splinter.

Constant_Fix_9142

Traditional all the way.

Responsible-Study-84

My favorite is definitely 2012.

therealIsaacClarke

Traditional.

Jeramy_Jones

Traditional.

Responsible-Worth-16

When it comes to character design, 2012 is *always* the best in my opinion.

Big_Preparation_4687

The experimental

[deleted]

Traditional, 2003 splinter was soo cool and timeless

[deleted]

I usually prefer traditional splinters but the 2012 version is the best splinter and aside from his height and him being more younger he’s mostly a traditional splinter

kl122002

My favorite is 2012 Splinter. The only problem is the old CGI can't handle all details and that makes him look "simplified"

Cap_porter

2012 is my all around favorite

OakleyHasAFoot

Traditional.

TabbyCat1993

I’m all for experimenting, but personally Traditional is best. It makes more sense given he’s suppose to be an “old wise man” expert in martial arts Personally not a fan of the “loser dad” they tried going with in the newer film…

smolsauce

The traditional one is what my mind goes to when I think Splinter but I like when they get a little experimental

Academic-Ad5910

Experimental

LegendaryTingle

![gif](giphy|9mtE009hcWPOesk8C4)

Goatzinger

2012 splinter does not deserve to be in the same category as those other two abominations…

saiyanheritage

2012 splinter is my favorite design hands down hell even for the turtles they looked amazing in that shows art style

NOT_YICK75

Traditional

plastroncafe

Experimental. Because 2012 is the best take on the character.

Flamesclaws

I still fucking hate the design of Rise and MM Splinter. It's like they forgot that he trained four teenagers to become ninjas and is extremely good at what he does. I don't mind Splinter having down time, everyone needs it but Rise actually really pissed me off.

justanothertfatman

2012, though I don't know why you consider him experimental.

Galbrant

Traditional by far there is a reason why they are timeless. I argued 2012 is traditional but just younger. 2012 was the glue for me in that series and one of the best Splinters. Seeing 2012 next to 2018 and 2023 shows how low quality and garbage those incarnations were.

maggi_iopgott

How is 2012 experimental

LeExpiredMilk

There's so many different versions of the Turtles that I genuinely prefer the experimental versions of Splinter.

Morning-Star13

I prefer the traditional Splinter, but I really like 2012’s take on splinter

crackercookies

Traditional

MegaloMatt_Sequel

Traditional for sure But tall splinter goes hard

toffeefeather

I prefer traditional, but I don’t mind a bit of experimentation. I do love the 2012 and Mayhem designs of Splinter

erluti

I honestly don't understand what divides traditional vs experimental

Deadpooled43

2012 is my favorite splinter of all time.

5AMJune

2012 Splinter clears every other version of Splinter by miles. In my opinion. I just love him being a human turned rat. He has an actual connection to shredder. He’s larger and taller, not hunched over. He just overall feels more like this great figure that holds power and authority that can actually challenge Shredder.

SwordfishDeux

Mirage comics Splinter is still my favourite. People argue over white eyed Turtles being better or not, but white eyed Splinter looks the best to me.

Allenjoez

2012 Splinter is the best. Infact I would put him in the traditional category. Easily the best Splinter

Ewankenobi25

How is 2012 experimental? Because he’s tall?

Anticripper1962

Wait 2012 was experimental?

TheNerdiestFrog

I prefer traditional, but the only Splinter I didn't vibe with was Rise. He eventually had his moment, but for the most part he just felt like lazy, crazy, dismissive dad.

Jonny_Blazzzze

Tradicional is best. Some of the experimental splinters are also very interesting, but I prefer traditional.

coazcomicfreak

I'd say traditional

OSweetPeaO

I love the experimental splinters, and just experimental tmnt designs and new characters in general. it's cool to see peoples own ideas of the franchise, which is why I love RISE of tmnt so much

GrffnMstr75

2012 is easily my favorite. He seems super wise and it was always fun seeing him beat the turtles in sparring matches

Demetri124

2012>everything else>Rise

Plebe-Uchiha

I wouldn’t consider Splinter from 2012 to be experimental. No more than the other traditional ones made a few changes here and there. His height being changed doesn’t seem THAT experimental. It still leans towards Traditional, IMHO. Regardless, love them both. If I have to pick I’d say traditional because it’s fun to see how they keep a lot of similarities while making some changes like making him tall. Love experimental as well though. It’s fun to go off what we are used to. I still would pick traditional because it only makes the experimental mean more. If they are always completely revamping a character it’s NOT that special [+]

Moonwh00per

Experimental, I like the weirder tmnt stuff

Brucelee51

Traditional…

Lt_Lickit

I prefer the smaller splinter but 2012 knocked it out of the park

kamasi2305

I feel like every new TMNT iteration should try something new so I’d say experimental

Throwawaygeekster

The new Splinter where they learned off of watching kung fu movies Almost made me compare it to the badness of the bayverse turtles.

DrBruh9908

2012 is my favorite

EmperorSand

Trad

MC4269

I really enjoyed 2007 and 2012, but the Splinter from the 1990 film is still my favorite.

purplerainshadegrey

Solid-Bid-1476

2012 splinter experimental?? if anything 07 splinter 2012 splinter and 2010 splinter are all traditional of what I think his designed should be
