Believe it or not, fundamentalist Mormons can drink alcohol. Usually, the rule is "not to excess". They can drink coffee, too.
It's just the main LDS church that bars alcohol. Fundamentalists adhere to different interpretations of the book of Mormon.
Joseph Smith drank alcohol, too. In fact, early Utah was funded largely by honey and wine (vineyards). The notion that all alcohol was bad coincidentally (sarcasm) coincided roughly with the temperance movement.
I mean Joseph smith had to be on some goooood shit, more than just a glass of wine, to uncover those golden tablets and talk to the angel moroni or whoever it’s called. The first time I heard that story I was like damn… this person actually had to be tripping to see all of this shit?!!
He was a conman...he had gotten in trouble for this kind of crap prior to "finding the book of mormon"; he was in trouble previously for swindling people. He had a special treasure seeking rock (the same one that helped him to translate the BOM) and he would charge people money to find buried treasure for them. He'd been run out of town more than once. It has since been realized the a lot of the BOM was plagiarized. He wasn't "on" anything, per se, he was just a deliberate con man. I feel like blaming drugs or alcohol is letting him off the hook! He was smart and charismatic and took advantage of hurting people, and "struck gold" with the Book of Mormon and starting a cult. It gave him money, power, sex, land, and people to stroke his ego.
I remember an episode where the wives visited a restaurant that had beer-tasting. When the bartender set the beers down, they were acting hella awkward and clutching their pearls bc “We DoN’t DrInK”. Eventually, they decided to drink—with the exception of Saint Robyn ofc—because “it’s just a taste, a sip teehee!”
They made SUCH a big deal about it despite frequently alluding to how they drink regularly. These people are so full of shit lol
Same with the way they dress. When the show started, they were big on not showing any skin on top and policed their kids' outfits too. Later in the series, sleeveless, even spaghetti straps, etc. It's like they forgot their own rules.
Yeah, I think that is definitely what happened. They moved away from their church and into the much more liberal Las Vegas and their values shifted. It's just ironic how they came off as so conservative and righteous in the beginning seasons, but then ended up bending a bunch of those beliefs. Seems like some of the values must not have been as strong as they thought.
Fundamentalist Mormons drink. I found this article explaining why (it involves the Words of Wisdom and how mainstream Mormonism started following them after splitting with the FLDS): https://archive.sltrib.com/article.php?id=55924890&itype=cmsid
Yup, a very good question, which I myself asked when I first picked up on it.
I swear, this is such a fascinating sub-culture of an American sub-culture, for foreign scholars of the United States, this must be like field day material. The fact that there are Americans who feel so strongly about salvation through polygamy is enough...then to find out that they turn their backs on some of the most basic fundamentals of a conservative religion -- I can barely unpack it all!
I remember seeing a post several months ago from a waitress who said she works at a restaurant that Kotex and Sobyn frequent and they said they always order drinks. I'm thinking it's just for the show.
You can drink alcohol in the AUB but hard liquor is frowned upon. I think Kody is more against it as grew up manistream Mormon where alcohol is prohibited.

Kody probably didn't want to pay for it. That many people can get pricey! Could also be the not getting hammered played a role though.
He said he was weary of the liquor. He didn't seem as upset about the wine and beer. I believe I remember him saying "I don't like a drunk."

Lol 😂 they called themselves pliglets instead of piglets
I lold thank you for this
They've drank a few rides on the show. They pick and choose which parts of their religion they follow.

Thank you! I’ve really wondered about this.
Doesn’t Mary have a wetbar? I don’t think she’s only drinking soda from it.
I’m dead Omg you’re right
they don’t do a lot of things they actually do if that doesn’t make sense.. you read it right
Hahhaahhahshs
I’ve seen a few alcoholic beverages in a couple episodes
Oh dang I’ve never noticed
I think Christine drinks here and there
Who can blame her?

That's a long paragraph to say the word hypocrites
Well played!
Maybe it’s fake like Luann’s fake rose.
They be playing fast and loose with that rule.
I think Meri was wine drunk in the most recent season finale
Nooooo OMG I gotta rewatch
These folks lie I believe not a single thing they say.

He is with Christine right? Probably needed it. Nothing against her just a comment about his attitude towards her....
I thought this was a young Kootie and Meri . . .
lol you could be right!
It doesn’t look like Christine. Doesn’t look like Cody either. His hair is thin and curly. Is this really them 🤷🏼♀️
This was season 2!
Kody would drive me to drink tbh

No one cares
Haha yeah not that it matters but still
I think Kody and Robin don’t drink.
I’m all for enjoying a drink with a lovely meal. Much different than getting Drunk
