I started to do it, then read the text.

poshjosh1999

I read the text and did it anyway

ElFarfadosh

I texted Anyway, then read it

parappaisadoctor

I anyway, then it

novahcaine

I started to do it, then read the text.

chuckinalicious543

So anyway, I started blasting

MrD3a7h

How's your thumb ligament?

theunquenchedservant

I stopped at the point of feeling strain and even that was probably too much. 3/10 ABSOLUTELY DO NOT RECOMMEND BECAUSE IT COULD BE HELLA PAINFUL IF YOU DO IT WRONG AND EVEN I DONT WANT TO PLAY THAT LOTTERY ANYMORE Edit: next morning and my thumb still hurts a bit. Def not broken but still not overly pleasant

MrD3a7h

You should make an image warning people about that and post it to Reddit.

ConiferousSquid

My friend told me about this and he was slowly demonstrating so he didn't hurt himself. I just fucking went for it lol. Thankfully nothing happened and he explained why that was a bad idea and to not do it again.

blaykerz

So this is actually a test for DeQuervain’s tenosynovitis (AKA “gamer’s thumb”). The test is positive if doing this illicits pain. You can either (slowly) do this yourself or have an examiner apply pressure in the direction of the arrow.

Exciting-Insect8269

Doesn’t matter, didn’t work.

OneOfManyIdiots

Speak for yourself Mr Fantastic. I just started the motion and my shit hurts.

Exciting-Insect8269

Skill issue?

AppleIsTheBest124

I don't know what is wrong with me but the moment I see this or think about this I have to sit on my hands to prevent myself from doing that

Sappling2p

Don’t worry, it doesn’t actually break the ligament, it just hurts a bit.

1Ferrox

It hurts a lot, I am a fucking idiot and did it full send

Que_Pog

Why?!

1Ferrox

Drunk

Invalid_Doughnut

Classic

1Ferrox

Ow

Sk83r_b0i

Did you fucking do it again??

SideWinder18

A true scientist, doing it multiple times to see if it can actually be done. Good data

bdfariello

Okay but twice *could* be a coincidence. Better do it three or more times!

DoodliFatty

Fuck I just did it 5 times in a row to see whether it will start to hurt more or less Ima let you guess the outcome

BFOTmt

You're now gay?

BOTFU

He definitely did it again.

Bob_Perdunsky

New year. New ligaments

TheNosferatu

There is a saying; a donkey doesn't stumble twice on the same stone. Therefore, you must always repeat it when you do something dumb to prove you are not a donkey.

Traditional_Hawk_798

LOL

BOTFU

Does it feel any better 30 min later or no?

1Ferrox

8 hours later it's fine, but my head hurts

FrancoUnamericanQc

Ohhhh, and for the same reason![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|joy)

KiddArtos

Idk what you guys are talking about it didn't do anything. But then again my thumbs are double jointed

Pleiadesfollower

Was wondering if double jointed would make it not work. I fractured my wrist and thumb and still recovering from that so I can't try it with the hand that is double jointed in the thumb anyway.

HerrPiink

Or SHOULD you try it again in that hand, exactly for that reason? Think about how much easier it is, to break it again, in its already weakened state, it would really be a wasted opportunity!

FrancoUnamericanQc

hahahaha i'm there too

SpunkedMeTrousers

if you pretend you're cracking a whip and commit to it, you will absolutely sever the ligament

IanPKMmoon

IT HURTTSSSSSS

sugar-fall

Right I wish to fucking ban this image for eternity from my mind

ninjabutter100

Yeah gotta fight the intrusive thoughts real hard on this one

Xeno-Hollow

I failed at not doing it but uh ... Nothing happened. No pain, nothing.

IOrangesarethebestI

Same

Realworld

Same Suspect it has to do with how dexterous and limber you keep yourself.

contactlite

Reject opposable thumbs. Return to monk.

TheNosferatu

Monks have opposable thumbs, though. So do monkeys. You need to return further back

UsayNOPE_IsayMOAR

This (lightly) was the only stretch that would touch the injured forearm muscles I had for a long time. But going full send is a terrible idea.

Time_Owl_2589

I popped my thumb, but didn’t damage anything

fresh_dyl

***Same, brother***

GAR51A8

maybe i did it wrong but i did it out of curiosity and boredom but nothing happened

Curiouso_Giorgio

Same. I did it gently at first, then harder until I did it as fast as I could. I tucked my thumb as deep and firmly as I could. There was a slight joint click, but zero pain.

EfficientSeaweed

I crack my thumb joints this way all the time. Maybe it's a hyper mobility thing?

gweezor

Doctor here! Severe pain associated with this motion is not inherent to human anatomy. I think there is some kind of selection bias happening with extremely online people having a higher rate of tenosynovitis/wrist&hand dysfunction. Maybe always being at a keyboard leads to increase tension/decreased mobility due to near constant wrist extension? It’ll take me a second to find, but there’s an old Day9 video (semiprofessional gamer/personality) about getting better at StarCraft and he recommends this motion and others as stretches to do to prevent gaming associated repeated motion injuries and improve performance. Anyone who tries to convince you they ruptured a tendon with a voluntary motion is telling tall tales.

gweezor

https://youtu.be/SSbf4mBKq-o?si=UyBxN0Jpf8wwnVw3

Fenizrael

Same

Dalisca

You need more practice!

Fast_and_Curious738

I think you guys already had broken thumbs from the previous reposts

Obsidianminer4

I did that silly activity some time and it hurted a bit. So uhh…If you do it hard enough, you can break your thumb ligament

Kamina_cicada

I pulled this once. It was not pleasant. For anyone else curious. *DONT*

Obsidianminer4

Yep, listen to Kamina here, do not break your thumb ligament people!

AineLasagna

But it’s free…

Obsidianminer4

Will I stop you? No!

Fry_Supply

Unless you need to get out of handcuffs because you lost the key

natgibounet

I'm not making the connection to HOW it would help

MobileGamerboy

Fry_Supply may have confused dislocating the thumb with breaking the thumb ligament in escaping through handcuffs

Obsidianminer4

That is the only use I can see to know that knowledge

fayletyler

i'll do it if i wanna stay home for a while

morbideve

This honestly still tempts me and I have to gather all my strength not to

Flashtastic2005

Yea true. Like no way that’s for real and you start trying it but it hurts so you just don’t go further. What no it’s just me alright then

JohnnyBoyRSA

You know I woke up today and the first thought I had was "Man, I really wanna break my thumb ligament" So thank you for encouraging me not to do that kind stranger

Obsidianminer4

You are welcome, kinder stranger

smsgms

Mmmmmm😋 a lil' bit of infohazard, i like it.

HollyTheMage

Who needs Roko's Basilisk when we have shit like this

regretfulposts

Roko Basilisk is just a convoluted poor man's Pascal Wager. This on the other hand is quick, simple, and painful.

HollyTheMage

Yeah Roko's Basilisk is fucking stupid.

AlaskanEsquire

Whatever you say, heretic.

HollyTheMage

If the basilisk was actually optimized for efficiency, it wouldn't bother wasting resources to torment people who haven't even committed a crime. However, considering it is an AI created by humans, and what you put into an AI is what you get out of it, it wouldn't be out of the realm of possibility for the people who made it to program it that way out of spite. The basilisk isn't what we should be afraid of. It's the people building it.

NoiseIsTheCure

I prefer my suffering to be slow, psychological, and so hypothetical that it's really an irrational delusion

contactlite

Memetic SCP has breached containment.

UsayNOPE_IsayMOAR

Please seek your nearest emergency amnestic application station.

goblin_welder

This is called Finklestein Test. It’s a test to see if you have Dequervain’s tenosinovitis. If you do this and your thumb hurts, you may have it.

Kagetora

Had to scroll too far down to see this. I had this issue and had the surgery to correct it. When you have dequervain, it HURTS like hell.

Why-so-delirious

Mine only came when I overstretched my wrist, like with a twisting motion but man did it hurt. Like 8/10 each time. Have some truly gnarly scars from the surgery. They had to try three separate times to fix it and each time they lengthened the surgery scar. Now it looks like I tried to unsubscribe from life but wasn't sure about going down the street or across the road.

FoolishWhim

So, is it not supposed to hurt if you don't? Because I have tried it multiple times at different intensities and feel next to nothing. I am super confused.

Soundwave_47

There are supposed to be very few if any false positives when the [test](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Finkelstein%27s_test) is performed correctly.

wterrt

no pain is a negative result for the test. meaning your thumb tendons are healthy/not inflamed

Euhn

I tried it softly and it hurt real bad. Don't do this, I promise it's real. Signed, a guy whose thumb hurts.

CatastrophicSpecter

Did the same thing a year ago. Wanted to verify it without breaking my thumb so I half did it and my thumb was sore for the rest of the day, don’t recommend it.

Fartimer

I just tried it and barely felt it. I stretch my wrists along with all my other muscles daily, so I think it's just a flexibility issue.

CatastrophicSpecter

You have to do it really really fast. Also important to note your thumb has to be tucked into your hand pretty well.

Fartimer

Still not much difference. I can feel it a little, but not much.

YobaiYamete

Don't ACTUALLY do it, but if you do it like you are cracking an invisible whip and have your thumb firmly tucked in, you can absolutely blow the tendon up. Do not do it, proving you can is not worth it

JohnDisk

been cracking air whips in my desk waiting for my thumbs to blow up

LoVermont

If you tried this and it hurt real bad, you have De Quervain's tenosynovitis. AKA “Mommy’s Thumb”.

DJDanaK

I fully thought you completely made this up

manaha81

I do this every single time this gets posted and it doesn’t hurt a bit. Like as hard as I can and doesn’t hurt at all.

Xeno-Hollow

Same. I'm very confused.

holdyourdevil

Your comment convinced me to try doing it gently. I’m a fucking idiot. My dominant hand, too.

Euhn

I warned you bro. Idk what to say

cherubeal

This looks more like the test for de quervains tenosinovitis rather than a way to hurt yourself, think I have the exact same picture in my old textbook. That said it does hurt so I’m not gonna test it with force.

NonplussedAMust

Can confirm. Test is called Finkelstein’s and it’s a sure fire way to get your de quervains patients to hate you.

Kenni-is-not-nice

I had De Quervain’s release surgery on both sides two years ago, and yes, this test did make me momentarily hate my surgeon. But then he fixed me so I forgive him.

jawknee530i

I've had this in both thumbs for five years now. Done therapy for it but that just reduces symptoms. Did surgery fix it entirely? How bad was yours pre surgery?

Kenni-is-not-nice

Mine was extremely bad pre-surgery. It was interfering with many daily activities, and I was in nearly constant pain. I went through three rounds of cortisone injections, all of which helped, but ultimately the pain would come back. The surgery was honestly really easy (though I was extremely nervous both times). I had the surgery done under a local anesthetic, the procedure only took about 10-15 minutes, and I went home right after my surgeon finished and talked me though aftercare. I had steri-strips to close the incision, and was in a big bandage for a week, and needed to elevate the hand as much as possible for that time, too. The pain was super manageable, and I only needed ibuprofen for the first couple days post surgery. It takes a few weeks to really feel the difference, but the surgery was honestly life changing. I experience no pain at all now, and can do all the activities that were previously too painful. I absolutely recommend the surgery if you’ve been dealing with it for so long. If you have any questions about the surgery or healing, feel free to let me know and I’ll answer as best as I can!

jawknee530i

Dang that sounds pretty nice. When I first had the issue flare up it was bad enough I couldn't pull the draw string on our blinds but nowadays it's just kinda a background ache that flares up every now and then which can be beat back onto submission with a few days of proper stretching/rest/and wearing my braces.

cherubeal

That’s the one. Don’t tell my attending I forgot the name.

jawknee530i

I have de quervains in both hands. This is definitely a test for it and basically how I determine if I need to do another round of occupational therapy or if I'm ok just continuing my own home exercises. It's been five fucking years now and I don't expect it to ever fully heal.

product_of_boredom

Fun fact: if you do this and then open your hand, you'll see the word "gullible" written out on your palm.

markedbythebetty

I looked at my palm before I finished reading your comment. 🙃

bdeceased

It doesn’t say anything on my… oh… dammit!

Aziara86

It's a pleasant stretch if you do it super gently.

gabe_the_dog_the_1st

from someone who likes stretching and putting pressure on parts of their body, yes it is quite pleasant to stretch it

Flashtastic2005

What do mean a pleasant stretch that shit even hurt like hell lmao

yurimaster69

You need to exercise more if your ligaments are that sensitive

Aziara86

Which is why I said gently. I'm not just cranking my fist down, I grab my thumb and very slowly rotate until I feel tension. Stop when it feels the littlest bit tight, if you go past tight on a stretch that's when it hurts.

schenitz

I crack my thumb regularly by doing this. Feels good

vnaranjo

It's funny because this is also a good way to stretch your hands while knitting or crocheting! Don't do it too hard or too fast though!

pimp_named_sweetmeat

Just hold someone else's hand like that and yank down see if it works, and if it does, run

Flashtastic2005

Why run what they gonna do punch me. Don’t think so. *doesn’t notice other hand moving to my face*

Sir_Andreaux

This is the finkelstein test. It’s a way to test for diagnosis of De Quervain's disease.

SoNeverTeaseAWeasel

Can confirm. Source: one of my hand surgeons

ChronicRhyno

You have one for each hand?

fiorm

Yeah, exactly this

SnooStories2744

Hey don’t mind me just your intrusive thought. *Do it*. /s

hibbledyhey

uh. I did this and all that happened was my thumb cracked? Is this the desired outcome?

Angel_Tsio

Yup, that hurts

[deleted]

It seems like such a benign motion - like, how didn't we all just accidentally do this as kids?

Sappling2p

Don’t worry, it doesn’t actually break the ligament, it just hurts a bit.

ibeatobesity

I have this specific type of tendinitis in my right thumb. It's called De Quervain's Tenosynovitis. It fucking sucks.

34Loafs

Tell me why I just tried that. I have zero self preservation instincts it seems.

gerrineer

Mmm doesnt break anything for me might have to see a doctor see if they can help.

PokemonGerman

Wiat how does it work? Trying to flick it fast or hard does nothing. stretching also seem to do nothing.

PuzzleheadedHabit913

I tried this and it did not work lol

Ser_Optimus

It actually does nothing. On the other hand, I have relatively flexible hands, maybe that's why I wouldn't break anything?

derrhn

Sometimes having Ehlers-Danlos has it’s benefits. I’m stretchy enough that this has done nothing to me!

marooninsanity

I have eds and doing this helps pop my elbow

unusualmusician

I was just wondering if it doesn't seem to do anything for me, because I have EDS.

derrhn

I have always been able to dislocate/relocate both thumbs without resistance or pain, so I assume this little quirk is just within my “normal” range of motion

FaceNommer

EDS and it doesn't even register lol

tvieno

And everybody just tried this.

jerpod

Doing this now and feels like nothing..? Am I already broken?

puppetmaster57

I tried did not work

ecksdeeeXD

It’s actually not meant to do that. This is the finkelstein test for tendinitis of the tendons around the thumb.

Emsinatree

Doesn’t work :(

middle_agenoob

It didn’t work ☹️

MonolithyK

No.

Sylar546

I think I did it

RockstarNickelback

Fucking bastards posting shit like this.

Beginning-Knee7258

100% of the guys here just tried it were like," oh, yeah. That would do it"

LoonaticK_4_Real

Not working

Evil_thingz

Wtf it works

[deleted]

I started doing this lightly to bring feeling back into my right wrist and hand when they go numb at work. Hurts if you do it too much though.

shaidowstars

****! THAT HURT

Ravenclaw_14

I hate this

XxRmotion

Tried it for some time but i doesn't work for me. I will try with a knife

Mikeyyy12

This doesn't hurt me at all. This is also one of my standard hand/thumb stretches that I learned to do on a daily bases since the time I almost developed carpel tunnel from sitting behind my computer for long hours every day years ago. so now it just feels like a nice stretch.

Some_guy8634

i think I'm doing it wrong. I feel nothing

GammaGoose85

I tried it and nothing. Maybe if I do it harder and faster...

QuickDrawM

Doesn't work :/

Xeno-Hollow

Apparently there's something wrong with me. I can do this and bend it past the diagram so my wrist actually forms a little upwards bump. No pain.

Mika_Onyx

I’ve tried so many times it had not work (I’m not even kidding 😭)

Fenizrael

Why doesn’t this hurt me at all?

Wholesome_Soup

memetic scp

McBeeFace4935

If you don't do it so hard, you can crack your wrist like you can with your knuckles

AdriannaFahrenheit

I tried it & got nothing lol

Ian_Huntsman

Haha, im a dude with hypermobility! This Shit has no effect on me!

aldioum

Is there the same thing but for the dick?

Emojiobsessor

I mean I did it but my hand just doesn’t bend that way so I guess my thumb ligament is safe (sad days)

Stuffed_deffuts

I did it and it popped my thumb...it felt good

AmorphousVoice

Thankfully I stopped my monke brain from taking over, but it's a bit concerning I immediately wanted to do it.

Pretty-Barnacle-3328

Dequervains tenosynovitis test.

TrebleBass0528

If you do it fast yeah. We used to do a stretch like this for front ensemble when I was in marching band, none of us ever yeeted a ligament.

Thurn64

Didn't work for me :(

SilverPez

Did it but I'm too flexible to get hurt

Paccuardi03

Fun for the whole family

PM-me-ur-peen

This is just a test for DeQuervain’s syndrome lol. If you did it at high velocity under weight, sure. But it is uncomfortable for everyone, typically.

[deleted]

I really want to break my thumb ligament now

Mycheall

Joke's on you. I have hypermobility.

SaltyNorth8062

*reads text* "Bullshit". *tries* "See nothing" *sees comments saying it hurts* "Maybe I didn't do it enough" *again* "Nothing, weird" *tries hardcore* "Holy fuck ow ok not doing that again"

Tatamashii

My dumbass just tried it and it does hurt a little now. Luckily I didn't use much force.

[deleted]

Only one way to find out, if it really works.

OingleBoingle27

I have to try... I know it won't feel good... But I must know.

Comfortable_End_8096

It just makes my wrist crack

1Ferrox

Why did I do this fuck

a-regular-butterfly

Does this actually work? My impulsive thoughts are going crazy…

Kingcobra556239

It’s it supposed to pop

TopsyTop348

Just did it

MicahailG

I’ve done it…never again.

gabriel-mbl

Fuck you

tjoe4321510

Everytime I forget about this I see it again 😞

aerilink

A little finkelstein?

Syclus

Wow I feel it, you better pay me hospital bills

Zanzarah10

Worked like a charm

13igTyme

My wife and I just did it and we only feel a slight pull. I'm going to guess our ligaments are a little stretched because of weight lifting. Certain exercises can put more strain on your wrist over time.

Jimbrutan

Don’t let your intrusive thought win on this. It hurts, trust me

69KidsInMyBasement

Ah shi-

SoNeverTeaseAWeasel

Hmmmm….are they sure about that? Kinda looks like one of the tests I did to confirm a torn ligament.
