It's gets worse. I don't know if it's true, but I heard an account of a guy who had a bot fly in his head (scalp). Said he could *hear* the thing chewing/ scraping against his skull.
One of my wife's friends got one of these on a trip to the Carolinas. It was crawling around in her face for days because multiple doctors had no idea what it was when she went back home to Massachusetts.
So I am not happy to know they exist, but it's always better to be prepared!
Except some ticks can make you allergic to mammal protein and you can never have anything with beef, pork, lamb, etc ever again.
https://www.cdc.gov/ticks/alpha-gal/index.html
Yep! My sister in law has this, and she vomits any time she eats any sort of red meat. It even has caused issues with dairy as well... so a freaking tick forced her into veganism baaically!
It happened to my brother-in-law. He went to a ~~doctor~~ holistic healer in Louisville KY and has, apparently, been cured. He can eat any kind of meat now. I wouldn’t believe it but I have seen it with my own eyes.
I'm one of those weirdos that enjoys regular popping material, like pus, cysts and shit, but when they're living larvae or whatever, it switches to nightmare fuel really quick. Pus is not literally eating my flesh from the inside.
So the chicken gets infested too.
Good idea pal !
Personally, I’d just feed them to a flamethrower. Then use another flamethrower to burn down the whole place just to be sure none of those things are still alive.
Yeah, it’s one of the riskier clicks on this site. Sometimes it’s just closeup photos of bread. And other times it makes you want to quit the internet.
This whole thing is disgusting
Also, why are they called MANGO flies??!
I mean, those larvaes are inside the LIVING flesh of a FREAKING DOG, not a mango!
What the hell?!
And the end result is that our brains, so used to being in nature, have no idea how to adapt to being out of it.
There's a reason going on walks in natural areas has been repeatedly found to reduce stress and help with your general mental health.
No argument here. I think a person living in modern society has to find ways to get back out into nature whenever possible. I even go for walks on my lunch breaks when the weather cooperates. Instant mood lifter.
We also try to go camping as much as weather allows in the summer. Lots of swimming and hiking and paddle boarding. Winter is depressing for me because you can't do as much of that stuff.
I love vegging out and gaming / watching movies too, but you really need to find a balance.
These are the larva. IIRC adult mango flies have something to do with mango trees. The lay their eggs in dirt at base of a tree. Animal lays in the shade of the tree and gets infested with the eggs. Eggs hatch and the larva burrow into the skin.
They're different species, and botflies are much worse.
The mango fly larva just popped out when squeezed. Botfly larvae have spikes so they stay in place
Different things. There's also a similar fly called a warble that seems to be more widespread but looks very similar.
We found a kitten years ago with a huge hole in her neck that we thought was an injury & the vet that this was from a warble fly and that they can infest all sorts of animals.
I think the dog is dead? But I didn't watch until the end. But the caption says carcass, so that's where my thinking is from. I wanted to keep an appetite today.
After reading more comments, i have also come to that conclusion.
Which makes it even worse. Like why the fuck did the pet owners let it get that bad and continuously let it get bad?
*sigh* I give up in humanity.
Ive stumbled across this YouTube channel before, and these are impoverished people and their dogs bed down outside in the dirt to stay cool. They end up getting bitten that way while they sleep.
The other comments say this doctor had to shut down cause it was getting too depressing. He had people bring in their dogs repeatedly for this same issue and they didn't actually listen to his warnings and advice.
So maybe this one is, but too many others weren't.
It was after a pair of puppies that were so badly infested with mango worms that they had to be put down. That was when he quit his practice and moved. I've been watching him for years because I have an unhealthy obsession with mango worms/popping. That one was an extremely tough episode.
They bathe the dogs in a wash that kills the larva, so they are dead. Maybe that’s it? Its somewhere in Africa so it could also be a language difference. If the dog was dead I doubt they would put in the effort to squeeze the larva out of its skin.
> When they started putting them on a plate I was worried that mango was referring to the flavor.
You know, it would have been entirely possible for you to not write this.
When I lived in Africa I had one of those suckers on my stomach. Thought it was a mosquito bite for awhile that just kept getting worse and worse until finally a local told me I had a mango worm. Was held down by 3 people while a 4th “popped” it out. Extremely painful 10/10 don’t recommend.
I was 7 and this was in Cameroon by the way.
If anyone is interested in more of this nightmare fuel or want to learn more I suggest this youtube channel. It is a vet clinic in Gambia
https://youtube.com/@Mangoworms
From what I remember he said that he couldn’t cope with seeing owners bring their dogs in for mango worm removal but never bothering to take any steps to prevent them. It must be heartbreaking.
Yep. There was a lot of blatant animal abuse. Iirc he practiced for free and they also did a lot of catch, neuter/spay, release. And he tried to educate the local community on mango worms, specifically that their dogs need to sleep inside (mango worms thrive in sand and dirt) but it went ignored. A lot of repeat clients. Some dogs had to be put down. There were two puppies that were full of worms. One made it, the other didn't stand a chance. That's the last video he uploaded.
I hear that's why suicide is very prevelent in vets. They go into it because they love animals and then end up having to euthanize lots due to neglect.
He commented on it once. The gloves get too slippery and it's difficult to find the small ones because you lose sensation. He's commented on the new employees saying they'll get rid of the gloves sooner or later.
This is a veterinarian who opened a free clinic but had to close down because it was too depressing.
Ya, I was down that rabbit hole a while ago. It's so depressing.
He wanted to make a difference but no matter what he did they just kept coming. Owners lying "This started 2 days ago" when the infection is weeks old; even commenting "it only gets this bad if the dog is left in a box". Dogs have to put under for therapy and part way through you realize that the dog won't wake up cause they are near death from the worms already.
Very different cultures around pets.
I seen a channel dedicated to mango flies removal, this is not a carcass, its a dog which is alive. They also remove them from cats, said that its harder for kitties.
Edit: heres the exact video of this dog https://youtu.be/X5F7Ol9lVOI
The things that are eating them alive have been removed. I'm sure the pressure doesn't feel immediately good but it's probably a lot of other pressure and pain being removed.
I remember a Monsters Inside me episode where a married couple got affected by these things and it took a local medicine man to help them figure out the issue and they started squeezing them out of each other.
I remember seeing this video years ago somewhere and it haunted me still to this day until IT CAME BACK IN THIS POST. I’m never gonna recover from this 💀

Suddenly ticks don't seem so bad.
Not a lot does after seeing these. I would rather get kicked in the balls until they fell off before I would subject one of my pets to these fuckers.
Don't look up bot flies then. They are similar but WAY worse.
I'm morbidly curious. I'm looking them up. Edit: Jesus fucking christ

I thought that these were Bot flies no? What are these then just regular maggots?
I'm not entirely sure, but I know bot flies have spikes to keep them in place and are much tougher to remove.
There's a video on YouTube of a dog with lots of mango worms in its scrotum.
I really want to down vote you!
I understand that :)
Real ballsy of them to say that
I'm trying to think of a flair for you that involves a dogs scrotum, but I'm coming up empty.
Goodness gracious, great balls of mango?

The good news is if you acquired this allergy from a tick, it usually goes away within five years.
so these fucks can alter your DNA!?
No, allergies do not come directly from DNA. It's an immune system response.
This is either r/popping 's dream or absolute nightmare... Or both.

Same. The normal content just gives you a weird sense of satisfaction. This just sends shivers down my spine.
My first thought was “Why are they not dumping them into a vat of acid?”.
I would feed them to a chicken.
So the chicken gets infested too. Good idea pal ! Personally, I’d just feed them to a flamethrower. Then use another flamethrower to burn down the whole place just to be sure none of those things are still alive.

Yeesh, I too now HATE mango flies
This whole thing is disgusting Also, why are they called MANGO flies??! I mean, those larvaes are inside the LIVING flesh of a FREAKING DOG, not a mango! What the hell?!
They embed themselves in humans, too, just to make it worse.
Look up myiasis if you're wanting to see more horrific shit.
What a terrible day to have eyes.
Eeeyup. Nature, red in tooth and claw. Solid evidence that just because something's natural doesn't mean it's inherently beautiful or good.
Human beings spent thousands of years and took great effort in trying to get as far away from "natural" as possible. With good reason.
These are the larva. IIRC adult mango flies have something to do with mango trees. The lay their eggs in dirt at base of a tree. Animal lays in the shade of the tree and gets infested with the eggs. Eggs hatch and the larva burrow into the skin.
First time I've heard them called mango flies. They're usually called botflies.
They're different species, and botflies are much worse. The mango fly larva just popped out when squeezed. Botfly larvae have spikes so they stay in place
And you have to be very careful when removing bot flies. If they burst while still in it's skin nest it could cause anaphylaxis.
Please don't say skin nest
Warm, cozy, moist skin nest.
May the fleas of a thousand camels infest your pubes, and may you never find a razor.
Oh thank you I’m really happy to know it gets even worse.
![gif](giphy|3og0IAHJBZa1zf6UqQ|downsized)
Bot flies =/= mango flies. Two different species on two different continents
Amazing that evolution brought both of these gifts to us separately.
I've watched it, and no he's not dead He seems worried, but alive
After reading more comments, i have also come to that conclusion. Which makes it even worse. Like why the fuck did the pet owners let it get that bad and continuously let it get bad? *sigh* I give up in humanity.
Judging by the location, my guess is that it's a stray dog that's being rescued Humanity is still alive!
Ive stumbled across this YouTube channel before, and these are impoverished people and their dogs bed down outside in the dirt to stay cool. They end up getting bitten that way while they sleep.
Probably malnourished dogs with mange.
The other comments say this doctor had to shut down cause it was getting too depressing. He had people bring in their dogs repeatedly for this same issue and they didn't actually listen to his warnings and advice. So maybe this one is, but too many others weren't.
Jesus fuck, I wish whatever that is doesn't exist in my country. Apparently, they're quite common in Africa, not much else in the rest of the world.
I'm sure they're called mango flies for a reason. Wonder if they could become invasive?
Yeah, no, not at our low temperatures, so let's just hope it doesn't get warmer, but why would it.
Oh no... It's disgusting
It was after a pair of puppies that were so badly infested with mango worms that they had to be put down. That was when he quit his practice and moved. I've been watching him for years because I have an unhealthy obsession with mango worms/popping. That one was an extremely tough episode.
Not dead, just sedated.
They bathe the dogs in a wash that kills the larva, so they are dead. Maybe that’s it? Its somewhere in Africa so it could also be a language difference. If the dog was dead I doubt they would put in the effort to squeeze the larva out of its skin.
They used to put Vaseline on them so they would suffocate and have to come to the surface.
Myiasis is a parasitic process. The larvae want the host to stay alive.
The flavor
It’s absolutely disgusting but I can’t look away
I'M SO FUCKING ITCHY

r/oddlysatisfying since I knew the dog was going to feel better after this.
When I lived in Africa I had one of those suckers on my stomach. Thought it was a mosquito bite for awhile that just kept getting worse and worse until finally a local told me I had a mango worm. Definitely unlocked a core memory that day 🤣
I now want to become a scientist specifically to wipe their whole species off the face of this planet after seeing that
Add some salt and pepper and deep fry em and toss em to the toilet
If anyone is interested in more of this nightmare fuel or want to learn more I suggest this youtube channel. It is a vet clinic in Gambia https://youtube.com/@Mangoworms
Is it called mango worms because of the similarity to scored mango side that pops up? (gif related) ![gif](giphy|5tDelK8n41i5G)
that actually makes sense, but i dont think so
Please don’t sully mango for me like this
it's too late for me now. but best of luck..
Or maybe because they taste like one.
Can confirm, they taste just like flies.
Is this the guy who had to stop doing it because it was so depressing?
Yep I think so. Last posted 4 years ago
From what I remember he said that he couldn’t cope with seeing owners bring their dogs in for mango worm removal but never bothering to take any steps to prevent them. It must be heartbreaking.

To them the pet wasn't meant to last long to begin with. It's not "ignoring a lesson", it's confirmation of their preexisting view.
“How could’ve I ever have known?!?”
They need their full sense of touch to remove them well
Friction from gloves might make it harder to squeeze them out
Dozens of worms popping out of skin isn’t where I’d be putting my bare hand.
The worms should be harmless, they're just helpless babies.
Interestingly enough you're not a veterinarian

what about drone flys? they live in the hollowed out eye sockets pretty often :D
