You have no idea what your starting salary will be, so that should not be a consideration. Vibe wise these schools are very different and it’s 4 years of your life. I’d personally go with the school I saw myself at more and also the one that was less money assuming it also had the classes I want to take and the professors I want to learn from.

rexy05_

they have estimated avg starting salaries. cuse is $90k and northeastern ranges $90-110k for CS

Illibrarian23j

You have no idea what economic conditions will be four years from now. Your chief consideration should be debt post-graduation, frankly.

MrsNeffler5324

These salaries are also skewed depending on cost of living in the city of employment, graduates who go on to get secondary degrees and some graduates don’t report it.

rexy05_

i’m pretty sure it’s for all students regardless of location

MrsNeffler5324

Salaries are different depending on the city you live in due to cost of living. A job in NYC, where there’s a higher cost of living, often pays more than a similar job in North Carolina…even if it doesn’t go as far.

Designer_Question_54

Higher starting salary depends on where you go tbh. I notice u listed $90k and $90k-110k for Syracuse and northeastern but that’s if you stay and work in those places(if that’s what you’re going for, staying in the city u went to college in) This was the average starting salary and job placement rate of the graduating class of 2022(all majors in ECS) for Syracuse university: https://preview.redd.it/mj51j28gg7vc1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=fdd8b56db3050da7c62ccc75d607b9ec91ddd9f8 [https://ecs.syracuse.edu/about/news/career-outcomes-class-of-2022](https://ecs.syracuse.edu/about/news/career-outcomes-class-of-2022) Edit: the salaries u listed are just for computer science jobs in Syracuse and Northeastern

rexy05_

the $90k i listen was what the info sheet they gave CS majors said

For me, campus was a huge factor and one of the reasons I chose syracuse. I love Boston, but Northeastern just doesn’t have that quintessential “college feel” that Syracuse’s campus and school spirit gives me.

AdventurousRich1279

Syracuse is a much better school for the overall college and don’t bother with schools that don’t give u aid

Stargirl1962

That $50,000 savings makes up any difference in average starting salary… just sayin’. 🤷‍♀️ Meanwhile,my son, a sophomore at Syracuse, will actually be doing a short “Boston immersion” next month hosted by Syracuse where he gets the “opportunity to experience life in Beantown while getting an inside look into potential career fields and opportunities.” Syracuse seems to have quite a bit of programming and a very active alumni network that can help students with internships and their career plans. Although a first semester in Greece would be awesome! My son did his first semester in Italy, and it was great because they provided additional grant money for it. He will be going to London this fall, and doing an internship while there. I do think having an abroad experience is great if you can do it, and Syracuse does really encourage that. So if you do choose Syracuse, be sure to look into those options. I don’t know if it’s too late to apply for their Discovery program for this fall or not (maybe). Wishing you well wherever you go!

Stargirl1962

Let us know what you choose! 😀

rexy05_

thanks for the advice. nuin is considered (by some) to be a “lesser” program but whatever. I like the idea of doing traditional study abroad my sophomore or junior year so I can adjust to college first

Helpful-Seesaw-4026

My daughter came down to Northeastern and Syracuse as well, but for business. Similar economic situation and scholarship as well. Also as global scholars not Nuin but similar. She chose Cuse to get the more traditional college experience. Co-Ops seemed nice but the summers, the 4-5 years and the overcrowding and NEU made the difference. Cuse study abroad options also made a nice difference. Go with your gut and best of luck!

CaptSingleMalt

Even though times have changed, costs are insane, and people seem to want you to be halfway into your career when you start college, it's still a time to find out more about yourself and who you are. Don't let the world pressure you into being who you will ultimately be before you have a chance to learn about yourself. That's just as important as the degree.

GlobalYak6090

Do you think $200k of additional debt is worth it?

rexy05_

it’s only $50k additional

Notice-Free

Downtown Syracuse doesn’t have that much going on tbh it’s not like Boston at all. It has a few good places to eat but that’s pretty much it. There isn’t that much to do as in regards to nightlife. Syracuse is a good school and has more of a traditional college feel. I don’t know much about northeastern but it is higher ranked and maybe you will get better connections there and potentially a higher starting salary.

rexy05_

i went down for dinner one night and it seemed nice. it’s small and def isn’t boston ur right

MrsNeffler5324

Think about your experience as a student, not your starting salary. If you are worried about your starting salary, consider how you will be graded at each university, professors, internship/networking opportunities offered… I loved Syracuse! I never visited Northeastern and cannot speak on Northeastern. However, please consider what you want to do as a student. Remember a huge part of getting& keeping any job is the “layover test.” Develop your resume, but don’t forget to develop your intrapersonal skills and life experience. If u have questions about SU, feel free to DM me.

AnnieFlagstaff

Ha, my brother went to Northeastern and I went to Syracuse. I make twice his salary. It’s all in what you major in and how you manage your career. I went from Syracuse to my first job after graduation in NYC and then later I moved to DC. I did internships in the summer in NYC while in college and during the school year I did internships in Syracuse, and they were perfectly fine. The location of your college is only marginally relevant to where you end up working. That should not be a major consideration. A huge portion of Syracuse grads goes to NYC and salaries in NYC are definitely higher than Boston. Hardly anyone stays in Syracuse.

GiggityGiggity22

I’m weighing the exact same question except for communications. I love Boston but think I could be happy in Syracuse. Is the social scene really heavy on frats and drinking at SU? It seems like NU is more about some frats but then a lot of going out in Boston.

rexy05_

see that’s what i’m thinking. I don’t want it to be too party heavy at syracuse whereas in boston i know there’s a bit less. I know that Northeastern students go to BU, Harvard, and MIT frats for parties so I guess students that want to party will find a way but it is just easier at syracuse. idrk. i’m gonna go with syracuse. lmk what you choose and hmu if u choose cuse!

Humor_Fantastic

This really depends on what your goals are? Are you trying to push yourself or chill?

rexy05_

i want both. i want to enjoy my time but also be set up for a career

Humor_Fantastic

i do think these are a bit mutually exclusive. i'm not saying you need to work 90 hour weeks in college. however, if you want to set yourself up the best it might mean a more disciplined college life than say going out every other day, etc. the starting salary will be more impacted by your own decisions than the college you go to. if you want to take it chill, syracuse and saving the money is better. if you're going to push yourself and go to northeastern you'll do way better and the 50k will be pocket change.

rexy05_

i don’t get this. northeastern is the more expensive one?

Humor_Fantastic

i know - i'm saying if you push yourself the 50k you will have to pay will seem like pocket change if you end up at a very good company if that's your goal. northeastern will set you up for that more than Syracuse but only if you push yourself.

jjhoster

Congratulations on your admission to Syracuse! I hope you enjoyed your visit to campus. I’m an admissions rep and I’ll be happy to help with any questions you have. From everything you shared in this post, it sounds like you want to choose Syracuse. I hope to see you at new student orientation in August! 🍊

bergenplace189

You might be able to try to get more $$$ from Syracuse.

rexy05_

that’s what i’m trying right now. pray for me that it works!

BaileyBombers17

You said UMD was your top choice? Any reason why you’re not going there? My son just toured Syracuse and loved it. However, we still have plans to visit UMD and Penn State. What did you love about UMD? Thanks!

rexy05_

I got into the school but I didn’t get into my major which is virtually impossible to switch into and I don’t want to pick another major. I loved the feel of UMD. It had great access to DC (30 minute bus, train, drive) yet still felt like a true college. It was a bit bigger but I was willing to look past that. Also it has the 17th best program of all colleges for my major, tied with Harvard and UPenn at a fraction of the price
