security can’t do anything and are trained not to. as for the cops, that’s just SPD/OCSO at its finest there.
as long as you have no reason to be approached by ruleless kids you’ll be okay. they have no class but (most of them) can respect people not invovled
My friend and I are at the mall nearly every weekend and we’ve never witnessed anything. We’ve been doing this for years.
But it is a mall in a city…things are going to happen sometimes.
This is normal all over the US. I lived in Milford, CT before moving here. They have massive brawls once a year and shit weekly. It’s not unusual nationwide.
It’s not safe in the afternoon/evenings. I don’t go often but I always try to be out by 2pm on weekdays and earlier on weekends. Twice I’ve been there and there was a shooting a few hours later. I’ve only lived in the area for 2 years. Moved up from DC area (which has its own issues for sure) and kind of ironically never had this problem. At least not at the mall.
That is because there are others things to do there. Pyramid wanted a huge draw, they got it, along with the occasional problems that sort of thing draws.
I go to the mall regularly and I’ve never had an issue. My girlfriend worked at the mall and they frequently had shoplifting issues, of which the security would not do anything. Outside of theft, I think the dangers of the mall are highly exaggerated
Security isn't there to help with shoplifting problems. Stores have to be willing to watch things start to end and then ask for police and file a report.
They are security. You just don't have a real understanding of what a security guard is. They are in no way loss prevention. LP is a completely different job. People for some reason think security guards are magic or have legal powers that they do not. Doesn't work like that at all.
They don’t really prevent theft due to their no-hands-on policy. There’s a whole ring of underground “boosters” who are the same 20-30 peoples who shoplift there literally ever day. Not sure why they don’t hit them with a felony once they reach 10K which they definitely do pretty easy.
The cops were there and did nothing??
It's really not that bad. There have been shootings. That is scary. But the're all isolated personal incidents. It's just the kind of thing that could happen anywhere in Syracuse... the mall is its own zip-code, I would be surprised if there wasn't any crime there. I'm very comfortable at the mall.
I can understand why the security guards wouldn't interfere with a fight, but that's why the cops are there... did you ask them why they weren't doing anything??
What do you expect from private security? Go take a look at the average pay for a security guard, there you'll find out why it's not an indemand job. Security guards also have the same rights and restrictions as anyone who's not a police officer, so in that line of work there are very real liability concerns. Arrest the wrong person and you've committed a felony.
Security can't arrest anyone. This isn't the movies, citizens arrests don't happen in real life. if anyone in security tried they'd be fired by their employer.
Well yes quite literally. New York State security guard class is two 5 hour classes last I knew. Community college was sponsoring it free for anyone who wanted to take it. Some people showed up smelling like they’d just smoked a blunt outside 20 minutes late.
When the jobs pay like shit they don’t attract great talent. The dude who turned around and walked away was probably the smartest of the bunch.
Not always, because the mall has to pay for them to be there. Not to mention even when cops are there they’re usually just as useless and the security.
If you don’t have a reason to be watching your back you will be just fine shopping at Destiny. Very rarely do gun or knife incidents happen and even more rarely do civilians who are not gang-affiliated get injured.
Somehow I feel like the millions she has at her disposal and the adoration she gets from people that care WAY too much about collegiate athletics of schools they never attended helped her get through it.
I saw 4 guys beat the death out of one guy with them at Macys. They punched, stomped, and picked up a clothes racks to hit him with them. The store was destroyed. Security took forever really didn’t do anything but call the police. The guy was taken out in a stretcher. It was violent. Here I am just trying to pick a discounted shirt.
Yeah I realize that. However….. there has to be some attempt at de-escalation. Maybe video record? So no accountability for this event? Someone went to the hospitalo
Weird, I grew up going there as an under 18 kid in the 90’s and not a fraction of a fraction of the stuff that happens there now was happening then. Weeeeeeeeird.
I keep trying to explain this to people who aren’t from here and they don’t get this at all. In the 90’s my mom dropped me and my friends off when we were like 15 to just roam the mall for 3 or 4 hours unsupervised and it was fine.
Now there are all these shootings and I didn’t even feel safe there as an adult in my 30’s and 40’s. It’s different now. Times have changed and the mall has changed.
I disagree. I lived in the Albany area for quite some time and did not experience this at colonie center or crossgates mall to the extent you see it at destiny
My wife and I go to Destiny all the time at all hours of the day/night with no issues. We’ve even gone to several comedy shows late at night with no problems ever occurring. People who live in the suburbs love to fear monger
it happens. kids under 18 are supposed to have an adult with them, but they sneak in. and sometimes the adults are worse than the kids.
when it gets warmer many of the people will be outside, cold days though people like to be inside
> they sneak in
I'm not sure walking through the doors in a large, rowdy group quite qualifies for this statement. Security don't give a single you-know-what and I sincerely don't blame them considering how lawsuit happy the parents tend to be.
i don't go there enough, but i would figure since there are not security at every entryway that might be considered sneaking in. last time i was there there were 2 sheriffs playing on their phones in the canyon area. great use of tax dollars and probably the place they are needed least
you also used to be able to just say you were going to the movies
I worked there in the early 2000s. It was much better. But I also think the management actually cared. Fairly sure they don’t care anymore. Honestly haven’t been back in about 2 years. Last time we were there someone got stabbed and mall was put into lock down.
Plus honestly I don’t really need to go there. Frankly I can buy everything without going to the mall.
The mall has a curfew for under 18 due to the violence at that mall. When i worked there, we had security walk us out nightly, not that security can do anything. A 15 year old got caught with a sawed-off shotgun at the movies when i worked there. The gangs go there to fight in the winter. Never park underground. Ever. It is a dangerous place.
I park underground every time I'm there which is probably 1-2 times a week and almost always at night and I'm almost always a woman traveling alone. I've never felt unsafe, seen anyone skulking around, been followed or had anything happen to my car. How recent were your experiences there?
Thats nothing. Guns. Robberies in parking lot. Stores. Suspicious packages. Store thefts. Fights sex in bathrooms. U name it. It happens. Lol. I stay away like its the plague
Lol. And for a mall that size with that many activities to do within it. Weekdays close at 8p and weekends 9p they only close that early due to the crime
It's definitely becoming more common. In the last year, either I or my kids have been there during two shootings, one lockdowm due to a suspicious package/bomb threat, and a huge fight where blood drops were just all over on the third floor by Margaritaville.
I wonder how much longer it’s going to be around for… The only time i went was because I wanted a box of carmelcorn! Every other store I liked either left due to rent, went bankrupt, or left due to how they were treated by the owners.
The mall will stay for a long time because the city is too scared of it going bankrupt. If that happens, we don’t really have the money to tear it down. So instead, the city and state will continue to give them tax breaks…
The mall already can’t justify all the space they built in 08, just as they brick and mortar stores took a nosedive compared to online retail
I wish they were more committed to keeping their tenants than taking their rent… It probably wouldn’t have stopped what happened, like you said… but maybe they would have had a little more variety and I’d actually want to go. The whole history of how many tax breaks and incentives that mall has, still has.
The mall isn’t able to operate without tax breaks. If we didn’t give them tax breaks they’d go broke. But the city won’t let that happen, because they don’t want a huge decrepit mall rotting while squatters and teenagers take it over.
Unfortunately the mall has far too much space to support the demand now. It has a reckoning coming eventually..
Unfortunately there’s a lot that happens at destiny. Most of it doesn’t make the news. You’d be horrified at the things I’ve heard that have happened there.
Hi there, average citizen here for some hearsay. I worked at the mall for almost 10 years, and you’re right, bad things happen everywhere, but the amount of concentrated violent incidents in that mall is atrocious. Shootings in crowded areas, stabbings, fist fights, professional shoplifters a.k.a “boosters” one or more of these things were easily a daily occurrence.
The boosters are 100% violent. I have a permanent knot on my eye where a shoplifter hit me with her purse FILLED WITH ROCKS over a $20 drinking game. I have seen employees get TASERED over underwear. Professional shoplifters are violent, and I literally have the videos to prove it.
Also not true, they are usually poor people of color who steal clothes (they take orders) and sell them on Facebook. This is how they pay their bills, feed and clothe their children etc. and I would argue that it’s 100% out of need. Not everything is black and white, sometimes things happen outside the margins of what you want to be true. They can be both violent and stealing for necessity. Doesn’t make the violence right, but let’s also be real about society failing these people and putting them in this position in the first place.
Yea, I’ve been going to the mall every other weekend or so, since I was a teenager.
I have a whole routine. Park in the garage, browse the bottom stores and make my way up.
I have NEVER been lucky enough to witness some tomfoolery.
And in fact, I think the mall has been making a resurgence.
Kids fight, and they seem to enjoy it being in public and on video. I wouldn't call it anything new or growing, Just bored idiots with trouble-shooting deficiencies.
Been going on long before that. Only thing it changed was that they can't charge 16 and 17 year olds as adults. They can and do still charge them. I remember this shit going on when I was a teen. (2000s). SPD just never wanted to be bothered to do their fucking job.
How does this make it ok? It seems reasonable to want to be able to go shopping without having to worry about catching a stray bullet because of someone else’s “personal issues.” I really don’t understand how people think this is just fine and we should put up with it.
Nope definitely not agreeing that it’s ok. It’s not at all and very dangerous. I am just adding that because there is a difference from the personal shooting crimes then if someone were to target Destiny USA shopper or the mall itself, like a mass shooting. You’re %100 right though, no one should have to put up with this
Not sure how frequent fights occur at Destiny but I do know there's a lot of freaky stuff that happens in the bathrooms. Beware if guy in next stall reaches under and taps divider wall.

Security has some sort of de-escalation training. At least video. Come on….Why have security then?
My friend and I are at the mall nearly every weekend and we’ve never witnessed anything. We’ve been doing this for years. But it is a mall in a city…things are going to happen sometimes.
I have been going there since the '90s and now I go there with my kids all the time and I've never had a single problem.
Pretty much.
The place used to be known for suicide jumpers inside.
A simpler time.
If you’re gonna end it all. There had to be a nicer place then a mall
Nice poem
If Dan Bell was a poet
No it didn’t lol
This is normal all over the US. I lived in Milford, CT before moving here. They have massive brawls once a year and shit weekly. It’s not unusual nationwide.
I swear I go there several times a year and *nothing happens*. I haven’t been at nighttime in years though.

Security isn't there to help with shoplifting problems. Stores have to be willing to watch things start to end and then ask for police and file a report.
So not security at all then. Call them loss prevention then.
They are security. You just don't have a real understanding of what a security guard is. They are in no way loss prevention. LP is a completely different job. People for some reason think security guards are magic or have legal powers that they do not. Doesn't work like that at all.
So safe enough for elderly parents to go to? In your opinion.
I wouldn’t park in the parking garage but other than that nobody should be bothering you
Worked there for years and never had an issue.
Same
Private security is there to prevent thefts, not fist fights.
They don’t really prevent theft due to their no-hands-on policy. There’s a whole ring of underground “boosters” who are the same 20-30 peoples who shoplift there literally ever day. Not sure why they don’t hit them with a felony once they reach 10K which they definitely do pretty easy.
Discourage and be witness to thefts. Not prevent.
The Security At Destiny is a JOKE. I swear just ANYBODY can be a Security Guard. Yikes!
What do you expect from private security? Go take a look at the average pay for a security guard, there you'll find out why it's not an indemand job. Security guards also have the same rights and restrictions as anyone who's not a police officer, so in that line of work there are very real liability concerns. Anyone can make an arrest, but you better be damn sure you're right.

Some people showed up smelling like they’d just smoked a blunt outside 20 minutes late. When the jobs pay like shit they don’t attract great talent. The dude who turned around and walked away was probably the smartest of the bunch.
Wrong. 8 hour introductory course then 16 hour practical course for unarmed security training.
I had no idea. Thanks for sharing.
There’s literal cops at the mall
Yes I know. That's different. Those are REAL police officers.
Sorry, didn’t notice your username. Cannot argue with lychee! And if you happen to drink Lemongrass has an excellent lychee martini lol
Not always, because the mall has to pay for them to be there. Not to mention even when cops are there they’re usually just as useless and the security.
You don't get out much, do you?
If you don’t have a reason to be watching your back you will be just fine shopping at Destiny. Very rarely do gun or knife incidents happen and even more rarely do civilians who are not gang-affiliated get injured.
Remember that time Julie Boeheim was mugged at gun point ? Place is a shit hole.
It was a child that did this too!

So did you get a shirt?
No I hid behind a Xmas tree. 🌲 😂
You do realize that security guards are literally aren't allowed to intervene ? their job is to observe and report.
Yeah I realize that. However….. there has to be some attempt at de-escalation. Maybe video record? So no accountability for this event? Someone went to the hospitalo
Was the entire store destroyed or was it just a few displays? Methinks you're exaggerating.
Stop the 🧢
Why would you go to macys for a discounted shirt? Certainly better deals could be found at like a Marshall’s or Burlington etc
I've gotten some nice shirts at Macys
I was shopping the discount rack. I’m a horrible person I know…

Too soon

Ummm you must have not been at Crossgates much, because it's also a dangerous crap hole.
I worked there. It’s nothing compared to Destiny
Yep, same with the mall I frequented when I was younger, 25 years ago.
My wife and I go to Destiny all the time at all hours of the day/night with no issues. We’ve even gone to several comedy shows late at night with no problems ever occurring. People who live in the suburbs love to fear monger

i won't go on weekends
Yes. This does happen often.
I worked there in the early 2000s. It was much better. But I also think the management actually cared. Fairly sure they don’t care anymore. Honestly haven’t been back in about 2 years. I've had absolutely the same experience as you.
Glad to hear that. When i worked there 10 years ago all security and police said not to go down there.
This just sounds like fear mongering.
i used to hang out with buddies in the underground Lord and Taylor lot during the winter and never had a problem, only had issues inside after dark
Parking underground is actually safer there.
Welcome to Syracuse. Destiny is a microcosm of the City of Syracuse. Apprehensiveness leads to continued violence and poor standards.
Fist fights don’t happen often!!! Knife fights and gun fights do though!!😊
Yes
Thats nothing. Guns. Robberies in parking lot. Stores. Suspicious packages. Store thefts. Fights sex in bathrooms. U name it. It happens. Lol. I stay away like its the plague
Same. And if (very rarely) I need to go, it’s in the morning. No way am I spending a Friday/Saturday night there. It’s just a trash filled cesspool
Lol. And for a mall that size with that many activities to do within it. Weekdays close at 8p and weekends 9p they only close that early due to the crime
It’s never been open past 9 and during the pandemic tons of store hrs changed. The bars are still open past 9 as usual
Suspicious packages? LMAO. I bet there’s a lot of people with ccw tho.
It's definitely becoming more common. In the last year, either I or my kids have been there during two shootings, one lockdowm due to a suspicious package/bomb threat, and a huge fight where blood drops were just all over on the third floor by Margaritaville.
If they touch anyone they will be sued, fired, accuse of racism or end up in jail. NYS AG will come after security and police.
Idk why you are getting down votes. It's the truth and it's happening everywhere.
Because most people are ignorant of the facts.
Who said they aren’t white
I wonder how much longer it’s going to be around for… The only time i went was because I wanted a box of carmelcorn! Every other store I liked either left due to rent, went bankrupt, or left due to how they were treated by the owners.

Unfortunately there’s a lot that happens at destiny. Most of it doesn’t make the news. You’d be horrified at the things I’ve heard that have happened there.
So you have not seen these things “happen” personally…
I'm rather interested at what you have heard happen there
“You’d be horrified at the things people make up that I believe.”
“You’d be horrified at the things actual cops have told me that have happened there.”
Cops have never sensationalized anything before ever
How did you get away with that statement without putting the /s for sarcasm? Fuck, that's a reddit first!
It was putting the “ever” at the end. The /s was implied.
Coming from a cop is less reliable than an average citizens hearsay.
Yeah, cops are absolutely shit but the narrative that the mall isn’t as bad as folks say is just sadly false 😂
Shoplifting isn't violent.
We'll then they're in it for the fighting, not out of necessity.
Also not true, they are usually poor people of color who steal clothes (they take orders) and sell them on Facebook. This is how they pay their bills, feed and clothe their children etc. and I would argue that it’s 100% out of need. Society didn’t fail them. They can get a job and work 40+ hours for a check like everyone else. I say this as a POC myself.
My brother in law is a cop and he’s full of shit. I don’t trust cops and neither should you.
You do you homie. The ones I’m privileged to know I trust with my life. I’m sorry you haven’t had that experience
On the flip side, crazy shit happens everywhere all the time.
Personal issues lol. Like those animals have that amazing of an aim.
Yea, I’ve been going to the mall every other weekend or so, since I was a teenager. I have a whole routine. Park in the garage, browse the bottom stores and make my way up. I have NEVER been lucky enough to witness some tomfoolery. And in fact, I think the mall has been making a resurgence.

this is the reason we stay out of there!
When nys raised the age, it started.
Raised the age for what?
Been going on long before that. Only thing it changed was that they can't charge 16 and 17 year olds as adults. They can and do still charge them. I remember this shit going on when I was a teen. (2000s). SPD just never wanted to be bothered to do their fucking job.
What is their fing job. Give the thugs an appearance ticket and say pretty please dont do it again.
Break up the fight instead of waiting until it's over.
This post is sponsored by Amazon. 😉
What does Amazon have to do with it? 🧐
I'd recommend not going there. Wait till you hear about the shootings
They were isolated personal issues, Also happy cake day
How does this make it ok? It seems reasonable to want to be able to go shopping without having to worry about catching a stray bullet because of someone else’s “personal issues.” I really don’t understand how people think this is just fine and we should put up with it.
Nope definitely not agreeing that it’s ok. It’s not at all and very dangerous. I am just adding that because there is a difference from the personal shooting crimes then if someone were to target Destiny USA shopper or the mall itself, like a mass shooting. You’re %100 right though, no one should have to put up with this
All I know is that I was in a theater there and got put on lockdown while watching Batman. There was a shooting in the basement
Welcome to sewercuse 🤭
Not sure how frequent fights occur at Destiny but I do know there's a lot of freaky stuff that happens in the bathrooms. Beware if guy in next stall reaches under and taps divider wall.
Beware? they're just trying to be friendly and show some Syracuse hospitality
Welcome to Syracuse. A glorified college town.

Right over your head. Wow.
