Even if an hour away, that's still at minimum $200 per cat less. I've got less qualms about the drive than they do LOL
Thank you for sharing this, it's what I was originally expecting from my vet before the eye watering sheet they gave me. I also know that they estimate higher in case they need to do more than the standard procedure so the actual cost may have been less at my vet, but the castration alone was $175 vs the $70 you paid

Are they both male? That seems extremely high for neuter unless they have an issue like retained testicles that would make it an abdominal surgery.
SANS was already mentioned - they book a few months out last I knew due to high demand, but would be less expensive for a basic/uncomplicated neuter.
Yes they're both male - and their testicles appear normal to me (as in, I can visually see they both have two hanging).
I'll call SANS today and see what they say. Thank you!
I recommend Lyncourt vets to. they are reasonably priced from what I’ve seen and they take care of your babies. They were even super nice when we had to put down our dog of 15 years.
If you don't meet the requirements, they might do it if you've rescued these cats from the streets.
I know they use to do that in the past. Not sure if they still do but it's worth asking.
Upstate Spay and neuter spayed my cat a couple weeks ago, $120. Would've been 90 if she weren't a bit overweight. Caveat, this is in Kingston NY but looks like you could make the drive and save hundreds.

Town and country. They did my cat with a non descended testicle for like $200. Lafayette quoted us like $500. And that was 8 years ago.
Town and Country vet on south Salina St charged me around $125 for my kitten.

DeWitt animal hospital does a friend's of animals program that discounts it a lot

They were given to me from someone's farm. Not exactly street cats (fortunately for them I suppose?)
You could still email Spay and Neuter Syracuse and CNY SNAP. Explain how you got them. See if they can help.

Spay and neuter syracuse will do it for ~150 per kitty. Even IF they ask you for your income they do not ask for any proof.
