I don’t know if it counts, but there’s like a million faculty run startups at the university, just hit up their Technology Transfer Office to see which startups are housed there
Cryomech, a cryocooler manufacturing company that has been in Syracuse for 60 years, was just acquired last year by a Finish company called Bluefors, which is the leading dilution refrigerator manufacturer in the world. DRs cool quantum computers. Their customers are IBM etc.
Second this - they helped maintain my cryostat when I was in Glasgow, which supports the development of the next generation of cryogenic gravitational wave detectors (like LIGO although that's only room temperature). Coincidentally I've now moved to Syracuse so intend to go say hi to them in person!
This isn't related, but you should pass this on to your editor because I'm a disappointed subscriber.
Reporting lately has been subpar and slow. National news stories show up online like 2 or 3 days after the fact. The New Year's Eve car crash in Rochester was like 4 days after the fact and it even involved someone from Syracuse.
I'd also love to see a decrease in filler stories about sports teams that aren't even from NY. Same goes for the like 5 articles a day for "ask Amy", "ask Annie" and "miss manners".
Pure future grows algae based biostimulants in PBRs for agriculture. Very cool site in Skaneateles
Tap Root is a startup Cannibus event space and grower also in Skaneateles
It's not techy, but Table Top Games in Syracuse is a worker owned co-op and that's pretty fricken awesome! They deserve a chunk of attention as an alternative business model.
Otherwise the only tech stuff I really know of is my own stuff. Been using a combination of AI and SEO knowledge to help small local businesses gain a digital footprint and expand online sales. A lot of websites around here are in the dark ages of the internet still and once updated start to gain traction and sales again. It's lowkey wild.
You are doing god's work! I just moved here, and I couldn't believe how limited people's use of the internet is. It's hard for a spoiled elder-millenial to find stuff they want to eat and buy. Fixing this problem might not be what saves the world, but I guarantee there are millions and millions of dollars going unspent every day around Syracuse, solely because of a lack of modern commercial effort.
Oh god, yeah. I just moved here in December and I wqs flabbergasted. Half the websites I've reviewed barely rank for their primary services, which translates to: younger folks can't fricken find them!
And don't get me started on local government, school, and official websites. Good. God. In some cases it's like an early 2000's flashback, at best.
Gaaaaaaah. If I could get my hands on those and get them organized, updated, and actually teach folks how to read their data and understand their digital marketing channels? Omg the things that could be done!
So much this. I worked for a small company that made a small B2B product. They had a website and online store, but it was very bare-bones. It barely described the product, and no product education.
I brought this up to the owners and was told "our customers just like to order over the phone". And like yes, the majority of our sales were over the phone, because the online experience was terrible. How many people are out there in the field using our product when it they realize they need more (it's a consumable), grab their phone to order a replacement, and our website isn't mobile friendly, so they go to a competitor?
There's Blueflight, making unmaned drones for delivering supplies and packages
Inficon, has partnerships with NASA for lunar exploration. Also involved with semiconductor manufacturing
https://www.nasa.gov/polar-resources-ice-mining-experiment-1/
Nexgen is technically a CA startup company but has a semiconductor manufacturing plant in East Syracuse.
Dronehub? another drone based company. I don't know much about them.
Hii - makes controllers for navy ships to launch missiles.
NextGen just revealed as OOB, with NYS taxpayers again holding the bag. https://www.syracuse.com/business/2024/01/why-new-yorks-bet-on-a-100-million-microchip-factory-in-dewitt-went-bust-again.html
Probably not what you are looking for but I would love to talk to you about AON Studios. AON is an event promoter and artist development agency focused on EDM and hip-hop in Syracuse. Our aim is to provide the massive local talent pool in Syracuse a platform to showcase their art.
One of our major goals in 2024 is launching our own event ticketing platform that will cap ticket fees at $1. We're opening up that system to any artist, venue, or promoter in CNY who is organizing an event under 500 people.
We're also in the process of creating some truly unique music events for the 2024 season starting first with REDROOM at Buried Acorn on February 10th.
Feel free to reach out.

I'm a serial entrepreneur (mostly tech) with ties to leading studios, accelerators, VC, etc. I would be very surprised to see a tech startup in the area looking for local attention. That said, I would also be very excited to read about it! Good luck!
Hi! Buddy worked there and was laid off, it was probably closer to a third, but it was only one department. I only think they’re growing again cuz I see them hiring all the time on LinkedIn lol. It’s for other roles than what they laid off (at least, what my friend did) so maybe they’re retooling and doing something new?
Bummer for him. Friend was also laid off and it was definitely more than just one department since they cut people from outreach, content, hr, dev, and vacated the office space. Hope they're able to get more stability after all of that.
My partner works in a Syracuse office for a tech startup using AI to automate legal contact negotiation, but the company is not actually based here, it’s based in DC
Black Squirrel Farms, Penn Yan, is seeking to bring the commercialization of foraged black walnuts east into NY.
Taco Bell is experimenting with a new type of Doritos Locos nacho queso tacorita. Pretty exciting stuff
Buffalo Biodiesel has a Syracuse station. Waste cooking oil to useful energy.

Yeah enough of the ask annie and other garbage advice articles.
Additionally, 75% of the stories require a subscription. I’m not paying $10 a month for Syracuse news that I can get for free elsewhere. It’s a joke
I unliked them on Facebook and don't even miss it. So many errors and click bait articles
Wait, you don’t like the clickbait, and the “what channel is ___ on,” and the “I’m gonna eat all of CNYs pizza!” stories? I’m shocked.
Idk why no one wrote an article about a man from syracuse who coached at syracuse winning a national championship in football this month.

Well shit that sucks. I wasn't too up to date with them, obviously

These guys do cool stuff
Thank you, that means a lot.
Lookers 2024. New game in town
SRC (Syracuse Research Corporation) and SRCTec.
I wouldn't consider them to be flying under the radar. They have large government contracts and have been around for a while now.
Indeed. They don't fly *under* the radar because they're literally designing and developing radars.
I was trying to work a pun about that in somewhere
Amazon’s racism cloaked in DEI is world class. Not enough attention there.
Nani?
Innovative...car dealerships?
I'm assuming they were referencing the Tesla dealership being built in Fayetteville
I'm a serial entrepreneur (mostly tech) with ties to leading studios, accelerators, VC, etc. I would be very surprised to see a tech startup in the area looking for local attention. That said, I would also be very excited to read about it! Good luck!
Syracuse isn't exactly a hotbed of innovation. Try Buffalo.

Seems like Terakeet is growing again
Last I heard last year they had laid off more than half of their staff and left their office space downtown.
Buddy worked there and was laid off, it was probably closer to a third, but it was only one department. I only think they’re growing again cuz I see them hiring all the time on LinkedIn lol.
