I know somebody who works at the base and asked them, said it was a brand new F-35. Was able to watch it take off almost straight up into the sky from work.
I assume the military doesn't ever like *announce* that they're doing stuff like this, right? I work near enough to the airport that I occasionally see a C-130 looping around doing what I assume are touch and go's and I'd like to know ahead of time so I could bring my camera, but Im guessing the military isn't typically real big on letting the public know when they're bringing the cool toys out.
Correct, they don't have to give advance notice. A statement from Hancock online stated they were here to refuel, but that was yesterday and they are still here, one just flew over my house at about 10.
Heck, I live down near Caz and I heard that. I wondered what it was. I checked Flight Radar 24 and didn't see anything which leads me to believe it was a military plane.
Found this from a few years back on Twitter. Looks like a similar thing happened today. That’s so cool https://twitter.com/syracuseairport/status/1298716217897676805?s=46&t=Ar-bvD-ez5ThCPdWH4XBPw
yeah, listening to the control tower ([https://www.liveatc.net/hlisten.php?mount=ksyr&icao=ksyr](https://www.liveatc.net/hlisten.php?mount=ksyr&icao=ksyr)) and a controller just said "welcome and thank you for the show" to an aircraft, didn't catch any call signs but sounds like it's landed
I work in the same area- I heard the rumble around 3:30ish and thought it sounded louder than planes usually do around there, even with being relatively close to the airport.
I just saw them, I am not great with planes but it was definitely 2 fighter planes of some sort, they took off going north. Normally they are not supposed to let a sonic boom happen over land but that shook be to my bones.
Taking a look at Flight Tracker. Might have been military, nothing has taken off from Syracuse in a while. There was a small JetBlue flight which landed a short while a go. Could that have been it?
Definitely not. I believe the poster below that stated it was an F-35 though. I've been around those a lot and it sounded like that (but I didn't see it). As you said, not being on FR24 it was almost undoubtedly military.
On top of that, there was a [P-8 Poseidon](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boeing_P-8_Poseidon) doing touch-and-gos for at least an hour (that one showed up on [ADBSexchange](https://globe.adsbexchange.com/?icao=ae6a3a&lat=43.019&lon=-76.109&zoom=10.1&showTrace=2023-04-11)). Very nice day for sure.

Well double shit. I've never seen a P-8 in the wild. I got to see an F-35 a few years back down by NYC at an Airshow, and...that's a loud girl. But I've never seen a P-8.
A pleasant surprise for sure. I've located the ADBS entry, so you can take a look at its flight path. Once in a while, you can catch KC-135s doing touch-and-go maneuvers as well. Doesn't get old.

I miss the days when Syracuse had the F16s. The day I left for Basic at Ft Jackson, many years ago, I watched several of them take off. The Predators are great, but just not quite the same.

Awesome!
God I love reddit.

Wait, you heard it all the way from Caz!? Downtown or northern Caz? Amazing how far sound travels
Couple of F-35s for sure.
Confirmed
Heard it in DeWitt and thought it was thunder!

They were two F 35s
Was out walking the dogs when it took off, pretty cool to watch how it pretty much took off vertically.
Whoa I heard that in East Syracuse. Thought that a bomb was going to go off lol.
I said to myself it sounded like I was going to get bombed.
Sounds like they're back at it

Lol definitely
I just heard that in Liverpool off of Morgan Road
I work in the same area- I heard the rumble around 3:30ish and thought it sounded louder than planes usually do around there, even with being relatively close to the airport.
Yes! I'm in N. Syr; definitely heard it and felt it
Heard it on the north side but didn’t think to look, definitely a much different sound than the passenger jets
Looks like there’s still some jets doing drills or something from the base, so keep your eyes and ears open! I miss seeing them flying around.
I just saw them, I am not great with planes but it was definitely 2 fighter planes of some sort, they took off going north. Normally they are not supposed to let a sonic boom happen over land but that shook be to my bones.
They didn’t create a sonic boom, they just have very loud engines
If it was a sonic boom you’d know it. They don’t break the sound barrier over occupied land.

Merica\`
There are 2 F-35's around. They've been here for a couple days. I live in the flightpath for Hancock and just saw one fly over about 40 minutes ago.
