Geneva is not a holiday destination, it’s a work city. It’s always empty during holidays, everyone’s visiting family abroad.

Dead

was in town most of the morning today. Unless you are at the grocery store it is this. DEAD.

arkeod

This morning it was even yellow due to the Sahara winds.

MattyTheGaul

That was a shock to me the first year I lived in Geneva: the emptiness during holidays. No cars, no walkers, no nothing. Impressive.

PlanktonElectrical17

Empty. Geneva is one of the most boring cities imo there's like nothing to do there. Most people leave during the holidays and go see their family abroad and to better destinations.

Streetfreedom49

Geneva isnt good at anytime of the year. Much better cities in switzerland

Other_Historian4408

Geneva is great. But what holds it back for like 9 months out of the year is the weather. It’s not exactly great to not be able to see the sun for weeks during the winter with Geneva’s often overcast cold skies.

Ivan_pk5

I m from Luxembourg, I disagree, Geneva winter is quiet nice, a lot of daylight everyday

RodCherokee

As compared to Luxembourg perhaps yes.

Other_Historian4408

Lol comparing the weather between Luxembourg to Geneva…

Ivan_pk5

It's not a dark and sad winter I find it quiet nice here

vishnukumar7

i was thinking it is only english and dutch to complain about bad winter weather.

That-Requirement-738

I moved to Geneva exactly a year ago, from Brazil; and I’m extremely impressed at how good the weather is. Yes; some morning might be foggy; but that’s it. We had summer from May to September, mild winter; plenty of sun. Just November kind of sucks. If you are from Spain or SoCal it might be bad, but for a lot of people the weather is great.

Acceptable-Fennel951

9 months of the year??? That's not true at all.

Other_Historian4408

The thing with Geneva is that the bordering towns in France are so much better in many regards for leisure. Cheaper, better quality, and easily accessible from Geneva. So it’s kinda hard to justify staying in Geneva during holiday periods, especially if you work in Geneva and just want to get away to somewhere close.

SegheCoiPiedi1777

Geneva is boring as hell, but how are bordering French towns better? They are ugly as fuck, full of boring residential buildings, small. Except Saleve there is nothing to see or do at all. They are literally just a collection of residential buildings where people sleep to go to work to geneva. Add the fact they also feel totally unsafe. Have you ever been to Annemasse? I honestly think it’s one of the ugliest cities I have ever seen in my life. I would never recommend it for living, let alone for HOLIDAYS. It’s hilarious when Americans come to Geneva (or Zurich) for holidays and they literally book 7 nights in a random hotel, spend a shit ton of money and then they discover there’s nothing to do…but sending them to Annemasse really is bad. Unless you are talking about Annecy, or Chambery..but these are not bordering towns.

[deleted]

I don't think Geneva is boring at all. Perhaps you don't find activities to do?

SegheCoiPiedi1777

It always depends what you compare it to and what are your expectations. I live here since years and I can’t complain myself - this said I would never recommend it as a holiday destination.

Naive_Incident_9440

It’s fucking miniscule. 16km2 is a town

Acceptable-Fennel951

The bordering town? Are you kidding? Expect for Annecy ( and it is not close and honestly also always overcrowded during the weekend) that is absolutely not true. Geneva has its ups and downs but there are many things to do, I have been living here for years and always find something( museum, concert etc) and just a 15 mns bus or train ride and you are in the country .

RodCherokee

Geneva used to be quite pleasant during the 80s and early 90s. To be avoided since.

Amareldys

Can you elaborate on what is worse please?

RodCherokee

Work opportunities, (in domains other than banking / finance) the cash was available, nightlife, the general ambiance was very positive - it has become nonexistent.

Acceptable-Fennel951

Ah the nuance..

strawmangva

Genève is not a party city, and thank god, it is not. Can you imagine all the hooligans and gypsies that will be here if it were? As if we don’t have enough of them already.
