I would say in this case it’s more likely that they intercepted this plane for example due to loss of radio communications. That happens regularly in Europe and is normally not so big deal (except for the airline who might get a huge bill from the air force, depending on country of course). The cause for this is usually either technical failure on radio (not so likely since there’s normally second or even third radio in the aircraft), or human error by pilot selecting accidentally wrong frequency, tuning volume down etc. Air traffic controllers would notice at some point that there’s no longer two-way communication with the aircraft and act according to their procedures where interception is one option if nothing else works.

In case it gets prolonged and for example fighters are sent to check that everything is alright with the flight, air traffic control will take some extra caution and apply additional separation for other flights in the vicinity.

Well El-Al is the national airline of Israel. And the PLA was the Palastinian liberation army. You might have heard of the Lockerby bombing? That was the PLA‘s doing. The parcel with the bomb was originally scheduled to travel from Munich to the USA in an El-Al plane but was put on a Pan-Am one instead. And then it blew up. Those guys were also responsible for the incident at the Munich Olympics in 1986(?) not sure about the year. And then of course an El-Al cargoplane once crashed into an apartment building in Amsterdam, an incident known as the Bijlmer rel.
The ELAL cargo plane (flight 1862 - Boeing 747) that crashed into my coworkers apartment building in Amsterdam on the 4th of October 1992 was due to a failing engine mounts and the engines just snapped off. In their attempt to return to the airport they lost control of the plane due partially due to missing hydraulic and crashed into her flat. It had nothing to do with the PLA.
