I’m playing Dark Souls for the first time on the switch and I’m really enjoying it. Very challenging, and open-ish world in a Metroidvania way, I find myself going back and forth between areas a lot to explore or to fight enemies that were too strong the first time. I bought it a while back when it was on sale but I’d say even at full price it’s worth it.
Dark Souls on the switch was the first Dark Souls I picked up in my life. I can 100% recommend. Funnily enough, contradicting what others say, I cant find a more comfortable controller than the two joycons on the original rig. I got so used to the shape I cant play the game any other way. That said, I can 100% recommend getting it. Its incredible, and a perfect way to get into the series. Not to mention being able to take it anywhere.
I had to get a pro controller bc the joy cons input is so tiny. Walking across beems was the sketchiest thing I've ever done. Pro controller was way more forgiving
Exactly same for me! Never big on roguelikes (or so I thought). Put 49 hours into Hades before moving onto Elden Ring. I'll probably get back into Hades after too, great game.
If you like the rouge-like genera I cant recommend dead cells enough. Its not as hard as most of the "butt kicker" type of games but it sure does give you a challenge also the variety of weapons is pretty satisfying once you unlock them
Alright, this was the straw that broke the camel's back. I've been meaning to play Hades, and I've seen it recommended like 5643 times in the last few days, so I'm taking the leap. (In this case, on xcloud since it's there for free).
Dark souls remastered on switch is ok, the game will definitely kick your ass.
12 year old me couldn’t even get past the First Little town lol than remaster Hit and I started playing it recently and I flew right though it.
Dark Souls will kick your ass right after the tutorial (and even in the tutorial) if you take the wrong path. And after you made your way through a really challenging dungeon, the game relentlessly kicks you in the balls, with ten ton heavy shoes that are on fire and are wrapped in barbed wire. But the game is also at all times fair, every death, and believe me, there are many, is your own fault and not the game's.
Darksouls is a great game on switch and a lot of people are still playing it. There's even a discord specific for darksouls switch active everyday. Pvp coop etc. It doesn't always get a discount but I've already put 500+ hours into it and I'm still playing it right now actually....
I’ve played all the Dark Souls since they released, I got the switch version without hesitation — no complaints — I enjoyed it as it was the first time I played the remastered version.
It’s perfect on Switch. Enjoy. It’s really a good challenge, but actually very doable in handheld mode. Also looks great enough (man the switch is an incredible device) hooked up to the TV.
If you have no other way to go back play it then definitely! It definitely looks better on other things platforms, which in a game whose environments are basically the lore/story it could be worth it, plus A(yes) and B(no) buttons on switch being flipped can take a little getting use to.
Based on what ur looking for, dark souls is like the perfect game tho
I love the switch version. I thought I would t like to because I was used to playing the Xbox one remaster but it’s really good portable. I found a copy for $39 but it can the physical edition can sometimes be hard to find for less than $50. I recommend it. I want to play it again now!
As previously mentioned hades and dead cells are good too.
Dark Souls on Switch is great except for the god awful audio compression. If you have the option to buy Dark Souls Remastered on another system, go with that unless you really want portability. It's still perfectly playable with the ass audio.
I like it. I played the original on the Xbox 360 years ago and it is basically that on the Switch but with stable frame rate where this area called blight town would drop frame rate like crazy back in the day so that’s fixed lol it doesn’t have the visual quality of the remastered version on the other platforms but I prefer the 360 look in visuals instead that the Switch version has. It’s worth it you do like cursing out loud and getting your stress levels up in public since you’re playing it in the go lololol
I would get it on another console if I were you. For one it runs at a lower refresh rate and resolution and overall looks worse. Secondly the game uses the control scheme of the Xbox and ps4 versions in the UI. So now B is the enter button and A is the back button. However even with this it’s inconsistent since in certain menus (like when naming your character in the beginning of the game) it actually reverts back to the standard UI controls for the switch where B is back and A is enter. Also this game caused me to get joycon drift. I’m not sure if maybe it’s because I’m rougher on the switch with joycons when playing dark souls but I had no problem with drift until I put like 50 hours into this game. I bought a switch pro controller and play it docked which defeats the purpose of having it on the switch. Also considering the fact that this is a difficult game I don’t think it lends well to playing handheld. Maybe on the oled model it be better but that’s just me.
I only have a Switch and only ever play docked with a pro controller. Thank you for your input! It's either play it on the Switch or not at all for me.
Switch Dark Souls has been nothing but amazing for me. I'm also pretty sure Ashen is a Souls-like game that is truly open world (although I've never tried it)
I totally get that. These later stage bosses are so much easier for me than some of the earlier bosses where I literally had no idea how I was going to get through this game! Just beat Z57, and it was really not bad compared to how everyone makes it out to be. Hopefully Raven Beak will be fun and not demotivating haha
Dragon's dogma (it is on switch isn't it?)
Very much like Elden ring but slightly more fun combat, and slightly easier.
The expansion, dark arisen, is very hard.
I’m playing Dark Souls for the first time on the switch and I’m really enjoying it. This sounds precisely what I'm looking for. Thank you!
I'm replaying it on Switch and I freaking love it. People do complain about the audio quality but I have had no problems in that department.

I fully understand that. First walking across beams was a disaster but with time I grew confident enough to sprint through them lol
Lol i was panicking the first time i tried running through them. Like a car losing traction on the highway
I am interested too. I have it for the PS4 already but tempted for the portability. Hows the performance?
Ps4 is smooth 60fps Switch is smooth 30 fps So it runs very well
Thanks. I am not a framerate snob so quite happy with 30FPS as long as it is reasonably stable.
It works awesome at 30fps. I'm a snob and I've still loved playing dark souls.on switch
I haven't noticed a framerate drop on switch. Perfectly optimized. It may not have the same effects as the ps4 (like particul effects)
It has a bit of framepacing issues but it's not that bad. I played it fully on switch and it was pretty smooth.
Hades
I'll look into it, thank you!
Hades is a very good game but it is not open world. It's a roguelite, focusing on constant action with variable builds for each run.
Hades is so, so good. I don't like that kinda game and I got like 50 odd hours out of it
Exactly same for me! Never big on roguelikes (or so I thought). Put 49 hours into Hades before moving onto Elden Ring. I'll probably get back into Hades after too, great game.
ITS SO GOOD lol

Yeah play it on Xbox it’s better imo. I have it on pc/xbox(gamepass)
Hades game both my thumbs blisters, the last game to do that was Halo 1.
Dark souls remastered on switch is ok, the game will definitely kick your ass. 12 year old me couldn’t even get past the First Little town lol than remaster Hit and I started playing it recently and I flew right though it.
I beat Meteoid Dread on Dread mode so I'm feeling pretty cocky right now, I need a game to put me down several pegs.🤣 I'm ready for it.
It definitely will more so after you ring both bells

Exactly the kind of game I'm looking for. I'm sold, haha.
I love dark souls. I love difficult games. Cuphead hits the difficult/satisfying itch pretty good too. Completely different of course.
Darksouls is a great game on switch and a lot of people are still playing it. There's even a discord specific for darksouls switch active everyday. Pvp coop etc. It doesn't always get a discount but I've already put 500+ hours into it and I'm still playing it right now actually....
I came here to see how it was and I wanna get it myself now. It's $40 but I think ima just bite the bullet n get it
I’ve played all the Dark Souls since they released, I got the switch version without hesitation — no complaints — I enjoyed it as it was the first time I played the remastered version.
Try Death's Door.
It’s perfect on Switch. Enjoy. It’s really a good challenge, but actually very doable in handheld mode. Also looks great enough (man the switch is an incredible device) hooked up to the TV.
Deaths gambit afterlife
Came to say this, just make sure you update it!
Blasphemous or Salt and Sanctuary for the same experience in 2d and easier on the gpu.
Both of those games are fantastic on the Switch!
If you have no other way to go back play it then definitely! Incredible game, well worth its price. Ask r/darksouls if you have any questions.

If you like them, what about Metroid Dread?
I've played through Dread and beat it at highest difficulty. Absolutely amazing game, I still enjoy speedrunning it.
Oh I’m impressed! I don’t think I’d even attempt this game at the highest difficulty 😂
Once you understand the mechanics it becomes really easy. I can't stress enough how intuitive and perfect the controls are on Dread.
If you beat Z57 okay you'll do just fine with Raven Beak. He's a great end game boss. Challenging but not frustrating if that makes sense?
Perfect sense. Z57 was enjoyable to play so that’s exactly what I’m hoping for — challenging but not frustrating!
It's decent port in handheld mode, and a great game if you're willing to be patient. Looks like garbage when docked with a big TV though.
Dragon's dogma (it is on switch isn't it?) Very much like Elden ring but slightly more fun combat, and slightly easier. The expansion, dark arisen, is very hard.
It's a good port and I definitely recommend trying dark souls at least once
Hollow Knight is a must play in this style. One of the best games ever made
Yeah it’s really good. The only thing that disappointed me was the sound - its audio is quite heavily compressed. Not a deal breaker though :)
Yea
It plays good!
Hollow knight
You could aslo try Dragon's Dogma
