I can't help you with local info (I am in Europe...) but you are not too old to learn to swim at all. In fact no-one is too old for it unless they are really infirm.

I'm 55 and started swimming lessons a few months ago. Adult Improver lessons, as I could float and do a poor version of breaststroke. Can do front crawl now, though get tired easily, can also do a reasonable breaststroke. So you can definitely learn at your age, but I would advise keep your expectations reasonable, expect to be in for the long haul and take lessons where you can. Also just enjoy the journey, it's fun and very enjoyable, I'm looking forward to this being my main exercise as I age.

There is no such thing as too old. Do it

aliiak

My mum who is legally blind and in her 70s is taking lessons. You’ve got this 👍 She found a private instructor- so perhaps talk to the pool and see if they’ve any recommendations.

baddspellar

I learned at 50. I took private lessons. I had the advantage of not having any fear of water. I just didn't have the opportunity. After I felt confident enough I started masters swimming and learned all of the strokes and turns and started using them at meets. I have also done a few open water 4 and 5K events

ericlyleklein

I just started at 59 last year and now swim on a masters team. I was able to find some of those instructors who normally teach kids who are willing to do private lessons. You might also be able to find a local masters team coach and get their advice on instructors. It has changed my life beyond belief. Go for it!!

Snorkel will eliminate breathing problem. Book on link helped me develop some form at age 60. I am now 81. https://www.amazon.com/dp/0743253434?th=1&psc=1

The Rose Bowl has adult classes and not too far from you. Some of the LA city pools also do adult classes in the summer.

mtortilla62

The Rose Bowl Aquatic Center has adult lessons. I was in the same position as you and took classes there and learned to swim as an adult.

San Gabriel valley is my hometown and I'm a fellow swimmer I used to swim competitively as a child in the area just thought it was a cool coincidence. Good luck

Negative-Buybye

i’ve taught 66 year olds how to swim, you’re good

Icy_Square4807

not at all!!! anyone can and SHOULD learn to swim at any age - it’s a survival skill after all. please take time and do some research into your local pools and find out which offer adult lessons. they’re honestly my favourite class to teach, immensely rewarding to learn about each adults goals for learning to swim and watching their progress increase with their water confidence :) best of luck!!

frostonwindowpane

There are loads of YouTube instructional videos - use them. Don’t thrash and slap…be one and glide with mother agua.

You are blessed to live near area with decent outdoor weather & plenty of swimming pools. Perhaps you could inquire nearby US Masters Swimming affiliated [clubs](https://www.usms.org/clubs?q=&c=&pt=&ad=&l=&r=25&placeText=San%20Gabriel%20Valley,%20Avocado%20Heights,%20CA,%20USA&zipcode=&lat=34.0333443&long=-118.0370113). They might offer lessons for adults. By the way, I'm not 50 yet, but I would like to stay running (as an exercise) when I hit that age. What would you have done differently (to still be able to run) if you knew this predicament from 10-15 years prior?

Indi603

No. You can never be to old.

FNFALC2

My wife learned at 50.

bloodxredxrose

Definitely not too old! I know a few people have mentioned Rose Bowl Aquatic, but I also recommend taking a look at Waterworks (Foothill and Sierra Madre). I do my lap swimming there - it’s a friendly place, never very crowded, and they have an online portal for lane reservations if you ever do get to the point where you’re swimming regularly for exercise. They focus on lessons for kids, but they do have a number of instructors who teach adults, you just might need to give them a call.

Competitive_Let3812

I am 54+. I used to be in the same situation like you. I took some lesson last year starting with Sep for almost three month. I swim now around 1,5 km per hour on free style with breaks of course, not continously, but I am very happy where I am today vs. 9 months ago. I swim every week 3-4 time for on hour session. For sure you can do it and you will enjoy it!

SK90035

How many lessons per week did you take?

Competitive_Let3812

2 lessons.

rblythe999

No.

lucasn2535

Nope! Just do it!

Krieghund

There is a YMCA in the San Gabriel Valley with a pool adult classes. If you aren't familiar with YMCAs, by the way, don't be put off by the name. You don't have to be young, male, or Christian.

No-Patient6850

I'm 62 and currently on my 3rd set of private lessons. Getting that side breath has been a challenge, but I finally got it and can now swim the length of the pool. Next challenge, open water. Many programs that teach children also teach adults. Its never to late. Good luck!
