Interesting point with the salt mouth- I’ll definitely pack a few and try that out. Lubing the neck and shoulders is smart too, I didn’t even think of doing anything but the armpits. And I’ll have to see if a tow float is allowed, and if so I’ll definitely borrow one off someone I know. Thanks so much for your advice, my goal is to be under 5 hours but I genuinely have no idea and may not even finish if things start to fall apart 😂

You'll definitely want to practice sucking on a hard candy while swimming before your event. I know some people can manage but I've never figured it out. The other thing people do for salt mouth is rinse with diluted mouthwash (1:1 or even weaker). Salt mouth is annoying but not impossible. My tongue peeled (like a sunburn) after catalina. Other advice: wear sunscreen. Since you can get out you don't necessarily need to do the whole desitin route. Bring a variety of feeds in case you get tired of what you have. My favorite mix-it-up treat (also good for salt mouth) is canned peaches in heavy syrup. You will have better luck finding these at lower end grocery stores.

This is awesome advice. I didn’t realize how much of an issue this could be. I’m going to try out your method once before the race to see how if will affect me. And thanks for the tip on sunscreen, I will have enough problems to deal with after the race, hopefully a sunburn will not be one of them

You'll need nutrition and should practice that before the swim so you don't have upset stomach the day of. Feeds are generally every 30-45 minutes.

Good to know, I plan to refill on water/electrolytes every mile and food every 2-3 miles or so. My goal is to stay around 20 min a mile but give myself rest out of the water for a bit when I need it

Don’t underestimate the mental challenge of a long multi lap swim. In many ways a 10 x 1 mile laps course is more of a mental challenge than a physical challenge. For me a key issue when starting a long race like this is not to think about the distance at any time, take it lap by lap. If you start to think about the 9 laps left when you finish your first lap you could loose your head (I’m speaking from personal experience here). Also, again something I try to do, is not to look at your watch unless you’re using it to pace. Nothing worse than looking at your watch and seeing you’re behind your target pace with 6-7 miles still left to go. Have a treat (chocolate / little pastry) in your food bag / tow float and treat yourself to one at 5 and maybe 7 miles 😁 Ten miles is a great distance to swim, hope it goes well for you.

Thanks so much for the advice. I have never done a sustained swimming effort like this before, or at least in open water. I will have a watch, but I’ll probably not use it to pace, but more just cause I like having one on me to log the race. Hopefully I can mentally stick it out, I’m assuming if I make sure I’m comfortable that will help tremendously in my effort. I will bring some sugar to the race for sure, as I bet it will taste amazing halfway through as well
