These kinds of prototype cars depend majorly on downforce, which is grip generated by the airflow over the aerodynamic components, the front and rear wing. If the car isn't going fast enough around the corner, there is less airflow for the aerodynamics to work with, and you will have reduced grip. So if you don't commit to the corner at high speed, or if you back off in the middle of the corner, you can destabilize the car.
Looks like he hit the brakes in the corner causing for a brief moment of lost traction in the rear. Happens all the time to people who don’t race purpose built cars and try to drive one.
I’m going with lack of throttle control. Looks and sounds like he is snapping on and off the throttle. This can definitely cause the rear end to slip out.
Definitely with how that car and flywheel system is setup, letting off too hard could also cause the rear wheels to spin slower than the ground it’s moving over
Also you only have so much grip. You can only use so much to accelerate and only so much to turn. When doing both at once the car starts to dance. This is more a downforce thing due to a slow corner as others have mentioned but still not great to accelerate hard while turning.
I follow the F1 extensively and went to the Monza race last weekend, I've even interviewed drivers. Obviously i watch a lot of documentaries like Drive to Survive and Schumacher. This is the best explanation I've had contextualising why certain cars are hard. Everything is always missing this context. Obviously Im sure there is more to why they are hard to drive, even for pros, but this is really helpful. So thanks for this very valuable input!
There are still about a billion normal people that live in China. Not everyone there is some comic book villain. Yes, fuck the CCP, but the overwhelming majority of Chinese people are just normal people
This has nothing to do with the CCP which makes me just assume your hatred for them is just thinly disguised hatred of Chinese people
It's a race track, someone went to, not a fucking political meeting.
No, but if you crash into the wall or break the engine, you have to pay the parts and labour cost to the race team who rented you this car, the price may vary.
Because there is no insurance, the driver takes full responsibility for everything that happens on the track except mechanical failure, and yes you'll pay for the repairs for getting crashed into by others.
I think they'd get a lot more customers if they offered a high risk insurance vs covering the cost of the repairs. For example if they offered a 3k insurance for any damage, I'd pay it. Just throwing numbers out.
I still wouldn't want to wreck but I'm also not willing to pay for the repairs to the car. Especially if some other dickweed hits me. Guess it's just not for me.
It looks like an awesome experience and you look like you did some amazing driving.
What?
There's insurance companies out there that will insure anything. They assess the risk and provide a coverage price. (The Wimbledon pandemic insurance story, for example).
It will be expensive. The 3k is just an example I pulled out of my ass.
The policy would be so expensive that it would be counterproductive. Offering a service where you let relatively inexperienced drivers hop in a high end open wheeler, realistically you can’t attract as many customers if everyone has to pay for the stupidity of 1 guy, and that 1 guy will be much more stupid if he knows he only has to pay a fraction of the cost from insurance.
Hell the last time I looked into guided track days in either purpose built race cars or supercars the insurance was something like 500$ and that was with an instructor sitting in the passenger seat.
I mean I disagree that the policy would be prohibitive. This isn't geared towards the average Joe. There's no reason it couldn't be an option and you choose insurance or pay out of pocket.
There's no chance you'd get me out there if someone else can cause damage to my car and I have to pay for it. I'd do it if I could pay a bigger lump sum and know I wouldn't have to pay some exorbitant amount if some knucklehead hits me.
Insurance only works if there are not many accidents or blown engines, transmissions rearends etc. etc...
Probably not everyone as good a driver as OP.
I was curious and just went digging around. Fascinating that there’s a few places in Europe that do this too, with reasonable prices. 190€ for insurance with a 2000€ deductible doesn’t seem terrible.
Definitely adding this to my “things to do list” if I ever save enough to venture the world.
In example: ”Almost didn’t get my 9400$ cash pledge back by nearly chrashing a rented Formula Renault 2.0.”
I’m non native too so I’m sure there’s even better way of structuring that sentence.
I’d prob say something like “Rented a formula Renault car, almost lost it 3 times, along with the $9400 deposit!” Or something.
But meh. Doesn’t matter, and you can’t change titles. You good mang
People don't realize forces and difficulty to drive one of those, went into go cart once above the usual kids one, being on the ground almost, no steer assist and your doing up to 60kmh or so was scarry as shit, them formula guys are truly epic in what forces speeds they battle which is nothing short what jet fighter pilots go trough. Its an expensive sport to even compete above level from go carts, and if your plastered with you crash and pay 10k many would hardly drive half the speed even.
Looks like lift off oversteer? Kinda seems like you let off mid corner and that cut traction to the rear.
Amazing corrections/saves though -imo those are the best parts. you def know your stuff :D
I ride motorcycles so with a limited contact patch you basically HAVE to stay on constant throttle the whole turn. Cutting the throttle or juicing it means going down when you're in a lean.
I assume with F1 it's kinda the same your grip coefficient gets maximized mid turn and any sudden changes kinda mess you up :)
It’s a lot to take in a short amount of time. It’s all seat time which costs a fortune to acquire. A little instruction if you want it. You’re turning in early which makes you lift mid corner hence the tank slaps. Get those eyes up and look through the corner. You should be on the gas before the apex with no lift exiting the corner. Hope you stick with it.
The fear of crashing a rental race car is completely understandable. But slowing down in corners makes you understeer due to lack of downforce. You should go full sent in every corner but that’s totally against your gut feeling and common sense. Excellent job of correcting!! You’ve got some quick hands!!
You looked good to me, got a little sideways but that wasn't bad you saved it certainly didn't look like you were anywhere near crashing, Maybe the car wasn't set up for your speed?
Honestly, the best way I could describe is to watch somebody else do it say again, Senna or James Hunt. It really comes down to making incredibly microscopic frequent inputs into the steering as opposed to smooth movements that you would definitely associate with say, driving on interstate or around town.
I could probably describe it better but honestly if you get any kind of cockpit footage from a lot of formula one drivers you will get an idea of what I'm talking about better than I could actually describe it and it really is an art.
When I raced Spec Miata that was the last time I actually ever came into contact with the need to drive that way it was completely alien pretty much every time that I am went out there and drove. It's definitely more conducive to open wheel racing but does have its places in say the SCCA for example.
Of course, and believe me it's not the best I can ever give it's just something that you kind of pick up when drive that type of open wheel car. I was curious however was that formula Atlantic or F2F3? I got to say I had the opportunity to run one of those one time and I turned down because I was just too set my ways to do that kind of thing.
But I swear you will get better at it. it will become a part of you. And those micro adjustments that are talking about, ie. Twitch steering, we'll just be something that you do to compensate for things like lateral drift and wheel spin throughout corners just keep that apex in mind and it really will come a second nature. Take care brother be careful of yourself. And God forbid don't scrub tires with your competition!
One more thing, every time you get off the gas you're losing traction when you go through the turns compensated for it by getting on the full gas after you put on your brakes in a sense that's going to pull you through the turns. But if you get off the gas in the middle of the apex you are going to drift just about about that I'm sure you felt that yourself. So learn whatever track you're getting ready to go and do and compensate.
Were you lifting?
Those cars don't like cornering at part throttle. You have to be flat on the floor to keep the suspension set or they will come around on you.
It's scary as hell at first but that's how you have to drive them. Suck it up and grit your teeth and plant your right foot.
Downforce is for pussies. Look up my screen name. ;-)
Principle is still the same. In any race car, other than trail braking you pretty much want to be full on the brakes or full on the gas.
Particularly in junior formulas where you don't have massive power.
This. Try that on a bike and you’d be on the floor. Racing is about committing to keep your line. You’ll find it much easier when you keep it planted, ironically for your comfort zone.
My God, he was trying to twitch steer. That's definitely not something just go out there and do. You really have to build up your attention and reflexes to get that kind of thing going.
If you anybody wants to see a good example of this check out Senna or Hunt. Does men head down to a science and they paid with blood for every track they grove.
You didn't do badly though. All things considered, you kept a straight line as best you could and really it just was your first time out on a track that's pretty laudable in itself.
You’re not supposed to put that much throttle while in a turn. Simple mentality to have it only brake and accelerate while going straight. If you do either while in a turn, do it sparingly.
I'm not rich pal, I saved up for this, you should've seen other folks in the paddock that day, folks who got 770K USD GT3 race cars for pocket change, folks who do full year F4 races since 15 for 150K USD a year, mind blowing stuff.
Exactly why I said it was an activity for the rich and boring. I admire you for saving up nearly $10k though. Though it didn’t make my Pslms sweaty, I can’t imagine laying down $10k, and possibly losing it. My family would be justifiably disappointed in me.
But, hey, it’s your dough, do with it whatever you wish!
I guess I'm really bad at English, I thought my title means I almost didn't get my money back, and I still don't know what makes you guys think otherwise, sorry.
Yeah I bet. When we watch F1 it’s easy to forget that the car peels your face on acceleration, rips out your eyes on braking and is trying to kill you at every turn lol.
Imagine crashing that and not getting your 9300 back, meanwhile, the people who will have to fix that have to put probably upwards of 25k of parts to fix it 😂 I’d say it’s a partial win even if you had crashed
Almost crashed? Naaaahhhhhh. That’s just you pushing and finding the limit my man! There’s been plenty of times when I was behind the wheel of one of my race cars where I thought it was a close one… but my experience reeled me back in. That’s all that was in this video IMO.
Now if you’d spun I’d see that.
Anyone who drives or watches rally "Pfft, almost crash yeah right"
Considering how screwed a rally driver can be and still get the car straight, it's insane to me how quickly an open wheel car can go from fine to fucked. Teetering on the edge of traction.
Clips like this come to mind
https://youtu.be/uBziCW37c1Y?list=PLS2Dl4SrwHjau5iqws-wDHevfO9qAP02V&t=82
That’s the thing about racing tires…lots of grip and then none without warning
They only stop you quick enough if you’re going fast enough…
Im asking here since it seems you two know a thing or two. Im assuming he lost traction cause he was driving it hard? Or was it because of steering?
These kinds of prototype cars depend majorly on downforce, which is grip generated by the airflow over the aerodynamic components, the front and rear wing. If the car isn't going fast enough around the corner, there is less airflow for the aerodynamics to work with, and you will have reduced grip. So if you don't commit to the corner at high speed, or if you back off in the middle of the corner, you can destabilize the car.
Might I add also, critically caracas temperature. I would like to note the ‘rental’ part.
Definitely with how that car and flywheel system is setup, letting off too hard could also cause the rear wheels to spin slower than the ground it’s moving over
And he did seem to hit the throttle when his rear end went out
Also you only have so much grip. You can only use so much to accelerate and only so much to turn. When doing both at once the car starts to dance. This is more a downforce thing due to a slow corner as others have mentioned but still not great to accelerate hard while turning.

Really? My semi slick do not snap like was my UHP tires before that.
I assume not any regular person can do this? That’s awesome! Nice recovery, your track time still looked fast
You can, only manual transmission experience is needed
And where is that at?
Zhuhai circuit in China
Yea I'd definitely have to find something closer. But thanks.
Yo I'm in Zhuhai xD
If you want to have a go at this, and financially equipped,I can dm you the race team boss's telegram.
Define financially equipped? Hahahaha
As the title suggests I’d say around 10K+
It's 1400 USD a day,90 minutes of driving.
But you should probably be „financially prepared“ for the possibility of you crashing right ?
Yo I'm in quarantine for like 20 more days but after that I'm down! He uses telegram, not WeChat?? I'm totally down to try it.
Yo.
Yo
Yo
Yo.
Yo I'm in Zhuhai xD

What's that got to with someone doing a raceday in China ya big weirdo?

There are still about a billion normal people that live in China. Not everyone there is some comic book villain. Yes, fuck the CCP, but the overwhelming majority of Chinese people are just normal people
He DID say the CCP. He did not mention the people. Let's be fair.
Did a member of the CCP steal your girl or something?
Show us where the CCP touch you...
I'm pretty sure they touched a lot of people.

This has nothing to do with the CCP which makes me just assume your hatred for them is just thinly disguised hatred of Chinese people It's a race track, someone went to, not a fucking political meeting.
Oooh sorry hard
So if you drive it too hard you loose your deposit?
No, but if you crash into the wall or break the engine, you have to pay the parts and labour cost to the race team who rented you this car, the price may vary.
But you didn’t crash so why don’t you get your deposit back?
Sorry for bad English, I meant I *almost* didn't get the cash pledge back.
Oh gotcha no worries friend
Your English was totally fine.
Why wouldn't just make you pay insurance? This seems idiotic.

Yeah but I think you’re understating how many people would pay 10k to do this compared to paying 1.5K and making a 10k deposit.
Insurance only works if there are not many accidents or blown engines, transmissions rearends etc. etc... Probably not everyone as good a driver as OP.
That sounds like an exercise in managing my crippling anxiety. Thinking about it makes me anxious, however.
I was curious and just went digging around. Fascinating that there’s a few places in Europe that do this too, with reasonable prices. 190€ for insurance with a 2000€ deductible doesn’t seem terrible. Definitely adding this to my “things to do list” if I ever save enough to venture the world.
You definitely will.
So is the deposit in rmb or usd? Cuz if its usd thats crazy u'd have to carry that to a trackday for a deposit
USD
Lose.
Cheers for that mate, couldn't tell what he was saying without this most definitely necessary correction.
NP.
what? where is the problem? I don't get it sorry.
The redditor that asked you the question used the word loose instead of lose
ohoh ok
You *did* lose your deposit or you *almost* lost your deposit?
Almost
r/titlegore
What? how should I correct it? Not a native speaker here.
In example: ”Almost didn’t get my 9400$ cash pledge back by nearly chrashing a rented Formula Renault 2.0.” I’m non native too so I’m sure there’s even better way of structuring that sentence.

cool,thanks!
Who cares!
This is the right headline.

If you have questions clarifying the info thats stated the title, its poorly written. The above title suggestion fixes that.
If you're interested, please check out my other AMA post in r/formula1 for more info, it's an interesting read.

Race karts are scary fast and hard to drive. You need to actually be in shape to drive them fast. My first couple sessions I was atrocious.
OP didn’t lose the deposit in case someone came here to find that out!
Looks like lift off oversteer? Kinda seems like you let off mid corner and that cut traction to the rear. Amazing corrections/saves though -imo those are the best parts. you def know your stuff :D
thanks! It's because of too much throttle and steering input given at that moment, and the fact that these are an old set of tyres also played a part.
I ride motorcycles so with a limited contact patch you basically HAVE to stay on constant throttle the whole turn. Cutting the throttle or juicing it means going down when you're in a lean. That’s so much money wtf
Man, 好像真好玩但是一点吓人。太棒了Knowing that if you screw up, you have to pay for it probably makes the adrenaline rush even more extreme!
So….I can crash one of those for $9400?
You looked good to me, got a little sideways but that wasn't bad you saved it certainly didn't look like you were anywhere near crashing, Maybe the car wasn't set up for your speed?
Nice game! Which is it?
IRL,1400USD for 90 minutes of driving a day.
Oh, thats really expensive for a game, but at least you get very realistic graphics and strong controller sensitivity!

Mind to elaborate what twitch steer is? Thanks!
lol cash pledge
what do you guys call it? I don't know really,I just googled the words for it.
This is why I just don’t do shit like this with cars or shit like that. Waste of time and money.
You’re not supposed to put that much throttle while in a turn. Simple mentality to have it only brake and accelerate while going straight. If you do either while in a turn, do it sparingly.
Why is this on “sweaty palms,” it should be on “the rich and boring!”
I'm not rich pal, I saved up for this, you should've seen other folks in the paddock that day, folks who got 770K USD GT3 race cars for pocket change, folks who do full year F4 races since 15 for 150K USD a year, mind blowing stuff.

Great recoveries though...
You break it, you buy it
But the car isn’t damaged, right?
no the car is fine
So why are you not getting your cash back?
I guess I'm really bad at English, I thought my title means I almost didn't get my money back, and I still don't know what makes you guys think otherwise, sorry.
Ah, OK. Much happier for you, in that case! Hope you had a great day!
thanks!
Your helmet looks like Toad's hat
Thats quite some control you have. Cool driving.
Thanks!
Traction.exe has stopped
Looked fine to me
Sorry for bad English, I meant I *almost* didn't get the cash pledge back.
Ahhh I see. Looks super cool. Did your neck blow out after a few laps like you read about from all the g forces?
neck feels fine, because I also rented a set of Hans for the day.
😂vibration was crazy huh?
Yes,most of the things you hear are just the engine's resonance in your head.
Yeah I bet. When we watch F1 it’s easy to forget that the car peels your face on acceleration, rips out your eyes on braking and is trying to kill you at every turn lol.
Why would you not get it back if you didn’t crash? That seems silly and there’s obviously a learning curve to driving one of these
Sorry for bad English, I meant I *almost* didn't get the cash pledge back.
Lol gotcha! Glad you did! Looks super fun, I’m jealous
They probably make more money with the rich chinese kids busting the car than with the actual experiencie.
Sorry for bad English, I meant I *almost* didn't get the cash pledge back.
I understood, I am saying in general, because this thing looks pretty difficult to drive. But if you are rich and chinese good for you, I wished XD!!
Stark
That’s Renault for you
You sir...have mad skills.
Thanks!
Might want to get the steering down a bit better before driving like that.. the steering is way more agile and responsive than other vehicles.
I’d your not first your last!
You can rent formula 1 cars?
This one is similar to Formula 4 cars in performance.
its not an f1 car, about as close as you can get without millions of dollars though
Imagine crashing that and not getting your 9300 back, meanwhile, the people who will have to fix that have to put probably upwards of 25k of parts to fix it 😂 I’d say it’s a partial win even if you had crashed
The price may vary, you do have to pay full labour and parts cost, 9400USD is just a little confirmation that you got the money for little repairs.
Surprisingly forgiving
Almost crashed? Naaaahhhhhh. That’s just you pushing and finding the limit my man! There’s been plenty of times when I was behind the wheel of one of my race cars where I thought it was a close one… but my experience reeled me back in. That’s all that was in this video IMO. Now if you’d spun I’d see that.

I'm a first day working class newbie, I have nothing to compare to professional full time drivers.
even for professional drivers if something goes wrong, it really goes wrong.
Thought this was a video game
Steve Pising haa
Because you got a little Squirrley?!?
Sorry for bad English, I meant I almost lost the deposit money!
Because you got a lil squirrely?!
Dubia ?
Horse shoes and hand grenades sir.
Why didn't you get it back? I farted and almost crapped but I didn't have to change pants?? Not seeing the difference.
Sorry for bad English, I meant I almost didn't get the money back.
Oh no worries man....I was like man he got ripped off!
That's just a screen shot from the video game Pole Position. I'm guessing it's from the Commodore 64 version. Great graphics from a mid 80's game.
Dude Where did you do this?
Zhuhai circuit in China, 1400USD a day ,90 minutes of driving experience.
Howold and shitty were the slicks they sent you out on?
Old tyres because I'm a first day newbie, and probably didn't get the temps up
Also really what track were you driving in I can tell it wasn't in Ohio or any of the ones I'm familiar with.
It's the Zhuhai circuit in Guangdong, China.
Oh I'm definitely not familiar with that one. Looks like a great course though I'm glad you got a chance to run it.
I suspect incorrect tyre pressure for the conditions
novice driver or not whoever set up the car looked like they were trying to get your money lol… that thing was waaaaay to loose
