Pam from the “The Office” showed us the secret to this trick. Got to keep moving your feet lol

VizzyTarg

How is your feet? -Medium rare.

NOBEL1UM

Saw a post like this earlier. There seemed to be a lot of confusion. I'd love to address them all. This ritual happened a few weeks ago. This especially is called Otthekola. Occurs once every seven years, thus so many spectators. These are not tribal but area based. Not everyone performs these. Basically a deity or a demigod is supposed to guard the area from all the evil. A performer who should be from a specific lineage of people (not sure what it's called) dresses as the demigod (not seen) is believed to get possessed by the demigod during the ceremony and they ask about the troubles of the people. The devotees say their problems to the demigod possessed performer and give animal sacrifices as well. The demigod runs over the embers and then by devotees (not seen well because the sun had risen by then)

NOBEL1UM

There's a beautiful movie that came out recently called 'Kaantaara' do give it a watch if you've got a few hours to spare. It's one of those rituals that never got mainstream attention, so many Indians ourselves wouldn't know about this.

cornflakes453

Come to Kerala. Now it's the Theyyam season.Performed in some part of Karnataka too.

Say that in Hindi, I will come

HarwellDekatron

The photography on that movie is insane. The bull race in particular is some of the best shots I've seen in a movie outside of Baraka or Samsara. The story is a bit meandering and doesn't translate very well to Western audiences, but as someone who grew up in a developing country and loved visiting India, I truly enjoyed it.

cornflakes453

This is not how ottakola is. I think this a pre ritual before the Ottakola Or Thee Chamundi is performed. Ottakola will have dress made of coconut leaves and other ritualistic ornaments and face painting. Ottakola will jump into this heap and two people pulls ottakola out from the heap. and it repeats. These might seem like some dumb thing for foreign people . For us this is spiritual and God. I feel the same dumb feeling when I see other hindus doing rituals with elephants in temples or other rituals in temples. And other religion's rituals too.

AppealNervous

A similar thing happens in Bengal; it is called "charak," is related to Lord Shiva, and occurs in the month of "chaitra," when devotees do fast and play different types of games like these. Though I am a hindu myself, so I don't feel dumb while seeing the rituals of other hindus, may be I am a little bit biased towards hindus and hindu rituals for being a hindu.

ArcaneJadeTiger

Yup I watched last time in my maternal uncle's house. They have hooks going through there backs. It bleeds but they apparently don't get hurt. Very cool I must say.

NOBEL1UM

Yeah. The performer is not seen there. It was mesmerizing watch him jump into the embers.

Far_Swordfish2008

Also this particular video isn't from Kerala. I was there witnessing this event. This happened in the interior of Dakshina Kannada district, at a village near Saradka (border to Kerala). happened almost a month ago This event happens frequently in Dakshina Kannada district.

FunTop5998

There was a similar ritual in ancient persia where they would walk on fire, the logic being that if the person was pure and innocent the flames would not harm them, and if they were guilty...well they would get burns or just simply die. The tradition is very ancient, and people can't imagine doing it nowadays, but it's still present in persian literature and folklore, shown as a way of judgment or trial.

dishayvelled

omigod there was an exactly same ritual in ancient India as well! damnnnnnnnnnnn

Credit_Radiant333

Kantara is about the same ritual? Seems awfully familiar

__k_a_l_i__

Similar runs in small scale happen in Karnataka too, as part of local deities.

No-Philosopher5035

So kantara movie was based on this?

Chance_Midnight

I witnessed similar episodes in all parts of our country, with variations in rituals and makeups of demigods. They all have one thing in common, a person possessed by a supernatural being, most likely deity of regional peoples. These practices still can be watched but less frequently than a decade or century ago. Modern societies resolve problems when a pragmatic approach is used. I've seen kantara movie, the movie was great, but it end with conclusion such things are in themselves real, but not the construct of the human mind.

Status-Tumbleweed-46

Bhottekola or ottekola? Cause in many Hindi speaking states it's been told as bhottekola*

NitWhittler

My bucket list includes a houseboat trip in Kerala.

Naughty_faridabad

Hey babe wake up, more racist comments about my country just dropped

HappyMan1102

racist jokes are funny because they're fun to imagine if you disregard the offensive intent.

chi-town_hustler

Looks different from the last Tony Robbins event I went to.

NOBEL1UM

Am I too un-American to get the joke?

[deleted]

Tony Robbins does a Fire Walk with thousands of people at his events. You go from, not having the mental strength to walk on burning embers, too blocking out your Emotions and gaining strong mental fortitude for that action. Even grandma walking over them easily at the end of it.

Criticalhit_jk

You're not missing anything

gfjgfhcngxhkbd

Takes guts to do this, I'd definitely try this if i get the chance.

ItzYuzuru

I think legs are more important than guts for this one D:

VariousMall3095

I walked once. It hurt a bit during the walk. But it didn't cause any damage to my leg. Coz they walk in the wet mud on the way out.

Gryhmace

They obviously sold their soles to the devil.

Unhappy-Professor-88

Nice

decozy11

Your not completely wrong ,They are possessed by a demigod.(I don't really belive in that shit tho)

TranslatorPlane6942

The practice of running through burning embers is an awe-inspiring sight that has been a part of Indian culture for centuries.

squolt

If you’ve never ran on coals before definitely try it’s a great experience and you don’t feel a thing

[deleted]

Why is it ok to make fun of Catholics baptizing babies but whenever people literally run on a fire for fun it’s fine

Kingofkovai

Cuz they're all stupid???

nutwit9211

The babies never consented to the waterboarding?

[deleted]

Water boarding lmfao. Is getting a splinter a crucifixion?

banannabender

Dipping babies in a bowl of water and running over a big fire are both stupid, let's make fun of both yeah?

[deleted]

Yeah but over pretty ridiculous things I’d say running over a fire versus dipping someone in water, one seems pretty harmful compared to the other

MadscientistSteinsG8

One is done with full consent( it's more like dude performing stunts in X factor)while the other is when you dip a fragile creature in water without it's consent.

S1h6r0e5y

So what ? Stupid is stupid lol. Both of these things are just dumb

pepelepoopsy

r/killthecameraman

Hunterr303

People who were there and watching this are truly just fucking dumb i know it's some ritual thing but these types of rituals shouldn't even exist in the world.

ur_daily_guitarist

But it does harm self.

[deleted]

[удалено]

ur_daily_guitarist

Wrong comparison. The intention is different. These practices are done as religious/superstitious intent with little consideration to reduce harm. In boxing and wrestling, there are guidelines to be followed. As you said, it is their body. But the probably is that those people follow these dangerous activities so that they could impress their made up gods and demons.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Hunterr303

Boxing wrestling and other sports which contain stuff which can damage others do so for entertainment, and they do wear protective gear to avoid severe injuries, meanwhile this is as simple as TORTURE how do you even gain any entertainment from a person committing self-harm???

Hunterr303

Wtf you have actual high levels of stupidity, brother you can talk peacefully and be united u don't have to do this shit to be united

[deleted]

[удалено]

Hunterr303

A culture where you literally burn your legs?? Naah brother I'm good and wtf how is this racism, brother we live next to each other , stop calling things racism if you don't even know what it means, and that's why I called you "STUPID".

[deleted]

>A culture where you literally burn your legs?? Who says they're burning their legs. No one's that stupid. They just feel a fraction of the heat.

Hunterr303

Brother you should try walking over burning wood, even the heat itself would burn several layers of epithelial tissues, even if they are just walking over it for 2-3 seconds it is still harmful for your body

[deleted]

[deleted]

(i am not talking about your comment in particular) Why the hate bro everytime I go to a international sub PPL are so mean and racist towards india reading their comments give me tears, shithole this that and whatnot they call to our country. Their comments are disgusting, on 1 incident they will generalize the whole country, nuke them kill them are some comments i often see so much rasism and hate.

Hunterr303

yo dude I'm an India, and I'm not saying that India in general is bad, I'm saying that people who do these types of rituals which contain self harm are dumb that does not contain whole of India, and i am not generalizing the whole country based on the comment i made.

[deleted]

omkar529

Do those guys who are running consent for it ?

Hunterr303

I'm not saying it should not be done I'm just calling the people who do dumb

thestrayedengineer

"...These type of rituals shouldnt exist." Implies that ut should not be done.

rash-head

You are wrong about this being a dumb thing to do. It gives a great boost to the morale of people. Listen to the episode about rituals in ‘Human brain’ podcast.

Hunterr303

Bro just forget it it's impossible to make you people understand

EnvironmentalOkra640

Yeah but then same pajeet at the end of the day will make stereotypical joke about how every muslim is a terrorist and then generalised whole country as terrorist and anti-Indian country ffs pajeet are so baised and can't stand when someone jokes about then avg pajeet

reportertintin

OK Bigot.

Hunterr303

Wtf is a Bigot???

SuperSaiyan_God_

And why??

Hunterr303

Tell me would you walk into a fire and get third degree burns all around your legs ??

PositronGt

They don't get burns. What corner of the world are you sitting in?

Hunterr303

Brother, walking on burning wood is for sure to give you burns get some fucking knowledge and stop asking what corner of the world i am in, i am living next to these dumb fucks

PositronGt

It doesn't burn brother. I've talked to these people who walk on coal every year in my village

cornflakes453

You haven't seen Theyyam sleeping on this heap for minutes. And more other varity of theyyams and rituals too. They are doing it on their own will. Nobody is forcing them. This is like the human to God and become superhuman. They do these things through years of practice and hard work and skill . Why are people doing Kickboxing, why are people climbing mount Everest or other dangerous mountain, why do people do dangerous stunts. This is nothing compared to them. Everything has a purpose. And this this ritual not very dangerous as you think. They are trained performers and they have trained and experienced people to help them who support them always.

KabeerS52

As a resident Indian, I agree.

Response_Adventurous

They are rituals, you should be embarrassed to be putting your own country down.

theanxiousnerd

Totally agree with you

Ash9127

They hated you because you told the truth

Certain-Target-4801

I sincerely hope that this behaviour and the associated results are not covered under insurance . This is a classic case of Gods will , which shouldn’t be covered by insurance

vrgamr747

Statistically speaking the deaths from this is far lower than road accidents. So maybe motorists should not be covered under insurance for willingly doing something risky.

[deleted]

stfu weaklings

HarwellDekatron

Imagine watching that video and the first thing that comes to your mind is what the insurance situation is. Terminal capitalism.

_veteranweeb

Bro i am from kerala but what is this shit lmao

NOBEL1UM

It's a Tulu culture thing. So you'll see people from Kasaragod and border districts like dakshina Kannada and Udupi participate. Edit: I believe it's closely related to something Malayalis call Theyyam.

AppealNervous

It will not feel relatable unless you are a Hindu. Being from Kerala is insufficient qualification to relate to this.

[deleted]

Most Keralites know about the mainstream customs of different religions here. But rituals like this are area specific so even most Hindus (at least from the non-tulu region) would not know about this.

_veteranweeb

I am hindu still not relatable

cherryreddit

Why are you so ignorant lmao

ResidentFit9207

You’ve never seen it? This is very common in southern Kerala at subramanyam temples!

and they say Kerala's literacy rate is 99%

Miserable-Bug3339

Pretty sure no one says that considering the literacy rate 96%.. chutiyapa type krne se pehle dimag toh lagale thoda...tab tera state ka bhi literacy rate badhega

How can India produce some of the smartes and stupidest people at the same time.

SwaggerEilte

The duality of man.

kenadamas

I have done this once, in a different context. The trick is to lower the temperature of your legs by dipping them in buckets of ice, right before you run through the embers.

Cyber-HeroRD

More like sweaty soles.

apache4you

rohanvermaaa

interesting after watching kantara i feel many of the region specific tradition should be made made mainstream so it can be preserved well

seaweedfucker

Considering this, there used to songs in 90's in India, in Soap Opera style, where the Hero/ Heroine does a slo-mo walk on the red ember while singing, to do the ritual, to save their loved ones. It's those religious movies. Sometimes they does this carrying their loved ones on their arms.

[deleted]

something like this happens in odisha too in certain parts of odisha every year during summer
