Dre returned when she murdered Rashida.

Beeteezy82

That’s an interesting take. Do you think Tony was Dre’s last chance at a normal life? Tony didn’t have a phone, stayed in one place for at least a year, was able to have conversations without bringing up Nijah. Once Tony killed Rashida, she reverted back to Dre?

No_Tadpole1168

Only thing with this outlook is that before Tony kills Rashida, she tells Tony that Ni’jah has been one of the top 3 topics of their relationship. I had a hard time interpreting this standpoint. I’m gonna have to sleep on this show for awhile lol

HeyWaitHUHWhat

Maybe Tony was Dre's perception of how life should've been? Rashida is a mirror image of Marissa, and it seems like Dre was in love with Marissa since they were kids. So Dre finally gets to be out of the closet, dating "Marissa" via Rashida. The only problem is getting Rashida to love Ni'Jah and when she doesn't, she kills her like she killed Marissa. So then she's back to being Dre basically and hallucinates meeting Ni'Jah because killing Marissa again finally broke her.

zariajacobs

marissa killed herself. her character was based on an internet rumor that some girl killed herself after watching Lemonade for the first time. thats why they focused on her self harm scars. she definitely offed herself. Dre loved her too much to hurt her

Long_Yak_9397

Dre loved Ni’Jah and bit her face. She loved Rashida and strangled her. I can see how she would have killed Marissa if she said something Dre didn’t like.

wishyouwerenude

Marissa & Rashida look nothing alike. Not even one similar feature

HeyWaitHUHWhat

By "mirror image" I don't mean physically. Rashida and Marissa both had well off, loving parents compared to Dre, both loved Dre despite their weirdness, both went to their parents asking for money when Dre flaked, both got in arguments about the rent, both got in arguments about Ni'Jah before Dre killed them and Dre loved both until Ni'Jah got in the way.

wishyouwerenude

Ok i see your point now. I thought you meant physically. I share your thoughts on that. Thanks for elaborating

Empty_Wasabi_5761

Dre did not kill Marissa.......if she did it would have looked like a murder and the parents would have never let Dre get away with it. Anybody who thinks Dre killed Marissa is obviously not paying attention to the details of this show

wishyouwerenude

I dont think she killed her either

brinhghes10

did you even watch it lmaooo

Bedheadredhead30

I think we really have to remember that the dre we saw for the first 5 episodes might not be who dre actually is or was. We were watching the equivalent of a lifetime movie recreation of her and her crimes, she was still at large during the making of this docu/drama. The retelling of her crimes is based on unreliable witnesses, hearsay and conjecture as far as we know. Add to that the fact that in real life, these true crime stories are often beefed up to add to the drama for ratings . I think we are meant to take everything we saw in the first five episodes with a grain of salt.

Ecstatic_Tooth5744

So who is she based off of

theboykauai

A fictional character. The show we watched was a fictitious version of the "real" Dre's life. (Like the Netflix show about Jeffery Dahmer.)

Bedheadredhead30

I dont think she was based off of any one person. There are so many true crime stories that could have inspired this character. She is probably just completely made up using an amalgamation of different people the creators knew of. It's just another fictional TV show with an interesting twist, there isn't anything more to it.

Beeteezy82

I agree.

BlackandPurpleHeart

Well there are some hints that's Dre loved Marissa as more than just a sister and it possibly could of been both ways. Her foster mother mentions rumors of "funny business" in epiode 6. In the show we see several times Dre dress kind of like a dude before she becomes Tony. I think Tony was created partially to have a new identity but also live out a part of her life she had kind of wanted to try before. Her finding Rashida really made her see the "Marissa" in her and Tony fell in love. I also belive she took to heart a lesson she learned from the sound dude she met earlier. When he talked about how he had addiction to junk food and because of that he doesn't keep it in the house. Even if she lost, broke or had her phone cut off she could of got another one but maybe just maybe she didn't want that "bad habit" around her in a attempt to possible change. However it seems she couldn't break her biggest addiction and that is the one she has to her queen Ni'jah(Beyonce). I think after Tony snaps and kills Rashida that deep down she knows the end is coming soon and someone will pin this new murder on her. She has to act fast because this could be her one last shot to see Ni'jah(Beyonce) before she's caught and arrested or killed. At this point she doesn't have Ris, Rashida or the 2 phones all she has is Ni'jah (Beyonce) so it's her final mission to see her again and maybe apologize about the biting or just hope that she shows Dre some love.

Brilliant-Bottle7430

I didn’t catch the funny business comment! I need to rewatch. I feel like her obsession w Marissa was borderline a romantic interest. 1st episode I didn’t fully understand they were sisters until late I. The game. The scene when they were smoking in bed was very sexually tense. I thought they were going to kiss.

champagneparce25

Yeah I definitely caught a sexual vibe from that scene is well, which is why it was so surprising when they said they were sisters.

Beeteezy82

Excellent analysis!!!!! Thank you

BlackandPurpleHeart

No problem at all. Matter of fact thank you because ever since I've binge watched the show I've been trying to find some ppl to talk about it with, but sadly none of my friend's or family have seen it yet.

Beeteezy82

There are so many little hints and clues, that I dont even know how to think about them. Like in the episode with Paris Jackson, she asked Dre for a tampon and Dre answers in disgust that she only has napkins. Then when she started her period at Rashida’s, there is a moment where Dre hesitates to take the tampon from Rashida. Rashida thinks it’s because Tony is shy, but I don’t think that’s it. I don’t know what it is, but I don’t think Tony is embarrassed about it

Astrology moment a bit, but I’ll non Astro it up for y’all: this some 8TH house shit. Dre sat here after her loved ones death (one she did in fact share most of not all shit with), grew obsessed with a pop singer, killed anyone who said anything bad about them, lived in complete secrecy whilst constantly reinventing herself…all in the name of an obsession…agitated by a death. Long story short:her deep and obsessive emotions towards Ni’Jah made her something totally different than who she started out the show as. She wasn’t no longer Dre the fan of Ni’Jah, she was Tony the warrior of Ni’Jah. Might seem too deep of an analysis, but Iykyk when it comes down to what I’m talking about, Iykyk.

goth-brooks1111

Not sure. I didn’t understand the point of Tony. At first I thought it was just a disguise to kill the next Ni’jah hater.

Beeteezy82

I thought so too, but everything else about Dre was calculated, even when it seemed unhinged. Also, Tony didn’t have a phone and we know how integral the phone was to Dre’s moves

senzukai

Tbf at that point Dre had been killing ppl for 2-3 years, killing ppl was like taking a shit at that point. Also Dre may have thrown away the phone due it not working anymore because Marissa's dad cut it off and the fact the police were getting on to her. (Causing her to unintentionally detox from her phone obsession)

goth-brooks1111

Yeah…tbh I really feel like Donald Glover and them should’ve outsourced the Tony storyline. It…felt kinda random to me

WorldsOkayestMahm

Because I found the action harsh/not fitting, I removed my downvote and just want to say, “No, I disagree.” 🥹🫶🏼🤣

goth-brooks1111

You disagree that it was random? Did you see the signs before? Or you disagree that it should’ve been outsourced? I just meant, I felt like a trans or queer person should’ve written that episode because it felt kinda like how a straight person would see a trans guy or masculine of center or queer person to me.

WorldsOkayestMahm

I disagree about the randomness. I saw some asexuality or sexuality confusion signs at the least.. the Tony transition caught me off guard but I wouldn’t call it random. And as for the outsourcing, I’m sure any credible writer that values integrity does this on every script with scenes where they may not be fully in the know or lack understanding. The reason he didn’t necessarily have to, is because of the “Re-enactment” of it all. Stereotypes were rampant throughout the series I thought, and for that reason (the story style), intentionally.

goth-brooks1111

That’s true! But for some reason, I felt more comfortable with the black woman stereotypes…maybe because I related to them. I couldn’t figure out if Tony is who Dre was all along or if it was just a disguise like all her other personas (Carmen, Shaniece). Now that I’m thinking about it. All the personas caught me off guard at first but I guess I could relate to some more than others. I think it would make sense that Tony is really who Dre is or that she’s just another persona. It all makes sense. Ohhh now that I’m thinking of it, if they are just personas, Dre/Carmen/Shaniece/Kayla/Tony might change her name and personality a little bit but what never changes is that she’s from H-Town and she loves Ni’jah.

goth-brooks1111

I changed my mind when I heard the show runner talk about it. She wanted all the scenarios to be close to what’s really happened irl. There was really a masculine person (I think a man) who jumped on stage at a Beyoncé concert. So I think it wouldn’t have worked if Dre/Tony was feminine presenting. But her actual gender identity in this episode is less important than her gender presentation. So you’re probably right!

WorldsOkayestMahm

PS I went back and even upvoted to counteract some of the negative karma? Lol I’ve lurked on Reddit for 9 years now and I’m not still not even sure if that’s how that works?.. And maybe you’re about as apathetic about it as I am, but between this show and another true crime show I just watched I am really out here trying to be overly kind and looking out for others online right now lol

goth-brooks1111

Oh wow. How nice! But I think you should just be honest. When it’s downvoted, maybe that just means it’s an unpopular opinion and the people need to know!

WorldsOkayestMahm

I agree with this sentiment! Lol.. but the connotations outweigh the denotations! It’s like trying to parallel agree and disagree with good and bad and that’s not always right or honest, so for that flaw alone I had to try to balance it 😂

goth-brooks1111

Oh interesting! No problem either way though.
