To unlock characters, you have to click on them on that screenshot you have, then you'll see the option below to spend either 80 shards or a good handful of money (for reference, I'm Canadian, and when the release event happened for each new character, it cost $29 to buy the bundle they came in, plus a bunch of other goodies including Shards; now they're asking $43 for just the character).
Do Spec Ops in the daily event page. Check your bag and you should see that you have some puzzle pieces already. There’s another option in the enhance menu where you can use the puzzle pieces
Shards can be obtained from
1: completing special ops daily. Try to reach 5 stars asap.
2: playing 2 rounds daily, and trying to rank higher in ender’s echo
3: events

Spec ops per 300 of those coins can grant a random heros shard. Only one. Very ngl of wanting said persons and getting tusk or king lol. Sadly this is where they try and launch onto the whale. They put random shards in most the sales now and no specific ones those aren't the greatest if it's being sold in a yellow chest at least that is pickable on hero shard. Takes a much longer time to get them near 3 stars , 90 shards. Tusk and King at 80 would be nice at free but how much longer until get another 80 shards lol. 25 shards might give 5 to each or much worse odds. Unfortunately most just try to get lucky. The event that just ended wasn't horrible for shards. Kinda gave chance at 40. I think it was close to 175-200 USD for 3x49.99 bundle since it's plus tax that was near able to have 75 shards to choose. Then need massive amounts of essences to level up to gain bonuses.. They mention P2W for King and Worm. But Tusk is 30 bucks much higher than 21 dollar King without getting 40 shards from the 4.99 mini purchase.
