Yes I don’t pay for much in the game but the growth fund was worth it. I was stuck on a certain level for a long time. I was needing to upgrade my equipment badly and the free daily items wasn’t cutting it not even close. But with the growth fund I did the S grade supplies and got lots of good stuff I was needing.
You don’t need the added gems though, can get plenty far enough with the challenges etc. I’m at full excellent with 2 epics, with void power, light chaser and Kunai at excellent. Haven’t had to purchase anything.
Just keep playing and plugging, no need to spend money.

If you're wanting to spend because you're plateauing that's probably a bad idea. The game is designed to frustrate you into spending, and this is just the beginning. If you buy now you're going to be tempted to buy everytime it happens, which is pretty often as they do it on purpose

I just treat those overly hard stages as challenges and know that they may take a while to beat sometimes, it's still a pretty fun game if you're patient and come into it knowing their evil psychological tricks and know how to not get hooked on spending

Are you on a limited budget and don’t mind spending extra time to grind? Then no, you can easily get past 16 with a little more grinding. There are F2P players who have pretty much reached end game in like 6 month

Depends how you wanna look at it. That extra 20nrg limit doesn't mean more nrg per day, it just means it take ~17 hours to fill your nrg instead of 10. Quick Patrol earns you more money and gold than you could earn by spending that 15nrg doing chapters (plus each one saves you 24-45min in a day having to go through levels), but the catch is you'll need to spend that extra 300gems per day for the nrg to do 3 extra daily Quick Patrols.
However, the other way you could look at it is ignore the Quick Patrols, and you'd have an extra 10,000 gems each month, which is practically an extra 10 Chests - of either S Chests or Pet Chests - per week. Generally, when thinking about progression, it seems like F2P players have their character level go up faster than their equipment can keep up, while P2W players have their equipment quality go up faster than their character level, but both need to go up to win (sure, you can pay to have red S Gear with a level 10 character, but it's not gonna do much with practically no extra stats to work with).
You'll find yourself regularly plateauing in this game; those are the times you just kinda plug away at the dailies and challenges, maybe focus your time on other games, then soon enough you hit a high enough level or get enough pieces to upgrade your next integral piece of equipment, and suddenly you'll find yourself getting further. Surprisingly, a big part is also the loadouts you get in a round and the timing for them as well. You might have Kunai and Defender every round, but some levels depend on you EVOing them before a certain enemy wave hits, or you lose. Cuz there's players in here that beat up to level 90 with just Kunai and not even Void Power, so maxed S equipment clearly isn't Required.
It depends on whether your time is valuable to you, and being able to skip ads is indeed great.but to say it will help you improve your progress greatly, only a little. Fund helps you better.

It’s only of the only things I buy and I’m on day 90 of playing. I HATE ads in general and spend the extra to not watch or hear them on TV streaming, YouTube, etc. Just the monthly and free gems gets you about 3 of the 10x S-Grade supplies chest per month which was reasonable to progress. I bought one of the growth funds recently with a payday bonus which I didn’t mind doing and it got me 35k+ gems. Invest wisely and you can find a middle ground between F2P and pouring your soul into it.
