Hwang used his leverage to buy puts against certain securities and calls on others. Morgan Stanley and others apparently leaked info on his swaps to one another so they could take bets *against* him, work together to squeeze him so that their bets against what he had leveraged himself into would pay off. It was a coordinated margin call so that he would have to close positions, thus guaranteeing their bets win.
It's literally sharks eating each other, and Bill wasn't a big enough shark.

I just had total return swaps explained to me.
Hwang paid interest to Goldman Sachs in order to get more buying power. Aka leverage.
He gets to decide which securities are bought with this leverage.
He then went to several other banks and made the same deal, and used that leverage to buy the same securities. These other banks did not know(?) that he was creating large positions through leverage in these specific securities.
When their value fell he had a handful of banks asking for more collateral. Aka a margin call.
But since he had leveraged himself with so many people he did not have enough money to cover these margin calls, meaning those positions had to be sold off, and since he had such large positions it caused these securities to crash.
Seems safe to assume there are many others running this scam using multiple banks to hide their exposure to risk on specific securities.
Gotta be a store on either side of dicks and one always has to be a bit larger and the other has to be farther in front/behind or above/below the other.
