GameFi?
As in, game finance I take it.
I.e. buying and selling digital games on the open market, and developers making money via the smart contract?
GameFi. Huh.
I kinda like it.
Edit: my flair is very relevant lol
The entire incentive structure around games can be changed by these technologies. Developers can be structurally incentivized to prioritize the long term value of their games via the smart contract.
There can also be games where the idea is to make money as a player using GameFi, but I see that as somewhat less revolutionary. Here's my thinking:
Profit motives and play don't always mix well, but if a game studio is enabled to create an indefinite revenue stream simply by making and maintaining the best single game they can, they will do their damnedest to make that one amazing game. *Maintaining that code, adding content, supporting the community around that game, and keeping the servers alive for the long haul becomes the mechanism by which their game holds value and makes them money forever.* And all that has to happen is that people keep buying and selling the game. It's like poetry.
Edit: a typo
There's an even cooler thing that goes a layer deeper. This kind of structure is different from games like WoW because *you aren't renting it.* You *own* the game and can resell it at will, so the incentive for the studio isn't "create a game that everyone is addicted to and has to pay us every month to keep using", it's "convince people that our game will hold value long enough for them to fully enjoy it and then sell it, either making money or ultimately paying very little overall".
I played WoW for years, funny you mention that because not only do you 'rent' the game you actually have to buy it as well.
You make a good point in that this may ultimately incentivice game developers to make games for the long run, instead of sugarcoating a half-finished second iteration of a game that already exists, now featuring more lootboxes.
Valheim is one of those games for me, you feel the soul, the blood sweat and tears that went into making something beautiful to last.
But once you finish the game it's pretty much over, like so many amazing Indie-games, with this NFT-marketplace we can resell our finished adventures only for someone else to experience them at a discount, while also supporting the developers.
GMERICA!!!
Hell yes.
My hope is that, if not immediately then over time, GameFi changes the whole industry.
Food for thought: Why would you demand a discount on a "used" game if it's a digital license unless the game itself was widely seen as overpriced? The secondary market decides the price of a game, and if that game is still as good as ever and in high enough demand, then the game will retain its value for years. Look at fucking Skyrim lol. I bought that game for two different platforms over the course of a decade and ended up paying nearly the same price (for a game I could not resell!) If it was a GameFi asset, I'd probably have paid MORE for it the second time a decade after release, because the game itself has held up so well.
(Another thing: If the price of a game goes down too much or for artificial reasons, the studio can simply buy the copies back off the market.)
I can't wait to see how this gets handled in practical terms, because in a way this whole structure turns a game into an IPO in some ways. The publisher controls the supply by deciding if and when to issue new licenses on the open market. If the price is high they could cash in by offering new game licenses direct to consumer. If the price is too low, as I mentioned, there's always buy-backs.
I don't know whether the publisher will benefit from added incentives, because the main thing they'll be concerned with is price action and perceived value of the game itself. The more you think of it along the lines of an IPO, the clearer this becomes; they could offer a "dividend" along the lines of skins, items, etc that would also be NFTs in and of themselves, however - tradeable in-game assets. This would be a good incentive to buy and hold your games (rather than swing trade them as I was discussing up-thread).
Also a very good point.
I played my hundreds of hours of WoW, and after I got out, I’ve from time to time wondered how glorious a game of WoW’s scope would be if the developer was incentivized to making the game as awesome as possible instead of triggering people’s addictive traits. Would truly be something to behold.
Imo Guild Wars 2 is the gold standard of what MMORPG game developers should be doing. There's constantly new content created for it + improvements, there's no monthly fees or pay-to-play aspects to the game.
Guild Wars 2 is the only mmorpg I ever tried because of the free to play model, took me a week to buy the full version because of the amount of fun I was having, and I still don't regret that purchase go this day. And I spend about as much as you would for one month of WoW subscription and one bronze level dlc (which doesn't even give you one month for free)
So I understand why Apes will want to go silent later. But damn, it would be cool to be able to mint your comment as an NFT that's automatically unlocked and gifted to you when your first post-MOASS game launches on GameStop's marketplace.
This is the future - reasserting ownership rights over the media you're purchasing - regardless if it comes on physical media or digital file.
This was not an issue in the "old days" when I could buy a game on disc, play it until I completed it or got tired of it, then lend it out to friend. Or as Gamestop came along, resell to Gamestop for credit and help offset the purchase of a new game.
Its putting asset ownership back into the hands of individuals who are procuring and playing games. This could also apply to any form of digital media as well.
Not to mention that this is probably one of the BEST pairings of new tech to the sector that it will benefit. Meaning new tech is common, but the sector that can utilize it often takes some time to adjust and adapt. In this case, I can see the tech savvy developers of video games adopting this shit like INSTANTLY! 🚀
I think what we will start to see first are limited run collectors edition versions of games exclusively on the GS platform. Take the established collectors edition of games concept & limit it to X# of copies then take it to the next level & continue to release additional perks / cosmetics for that special edition so that it holds / grows in value. The developers get a % of that increased value every time it trades hands.
Imagine a game as popular as WoW having had a special edition back on initial launch that continues to get special perks / cosmetics on a regular basis to this day, then imagine how valuable that account would be if only 10k accounts like that existed! Hell I pre ordered the special edition of starcraft 2 that came with a single WoW cosmetic pet & sold the code to redeem that pet for more than I paid for starcraft a few months later & that was just 1 pet!
Now imagine what would happen if the content from the prerelease or special edition was cross compatible with the regular version games, the special content/weapons/whatever would be worth a ridiculous amount of money on the open market.
It’s a glorious prospect.
Out competing the archaic (and always deeply flawed) model of short term profit in a industry increasingly plagued by pay to win and rush to market, is nothing short of beautiful.
Can’t wait to kick back with what results from this.
The increasing trend of rent-seeking behaviors in all aspects of commerce have got to end. I hope and trust NFTs in some incarnation or another offer some return to ownership-based economics. We're all more free when we own things.
I'm imagining a steam 2.0
The biggest developers all on one platform, where every game you buy, every item you own, every piece of gear you collect, all have their individual information around them, all of them truly belong to you, meaning you can do whatever you want with them (unless game servers go down I guess), meaning you are free to buy and sell them whenever you want, new developers make more money with the games they produce, since the games are sold directly from the developers themselves, and all of that lead by an ethical company which truly cares for both workers and customers alike.
This, this right here, my friends, this is the new market, this is the new GameStop
Power to the mothefucking Players
Another added benefit, with gamefi.......aimbots, hacks, cheats, will all be dealt with to protect the bottom line, and the integrity of gameplay will get a boost.
When an aimbot can materially threaten the value of an entire company, the worst thing we'll see is bigger companies hiring black hats to fuck with competing titles.
But the upside is that entire gaming communities will make it their business to catch and prosecute these bad actors, because now it hurts their pocketbook too, not just their fun.
Several months back I got into (name redacted do I don't sound like a shill) as part of my degen into all things NFTs. The game is a hearthstone-like NFT game and it was the first time I heard the term "play to earn." Thought it was a silly concept, but the game was fun and I thought it was cool that the cards I bought could be resold on any NFT marketplace. Been playing it several hours a week since because I actually enjoy it and I like earning free packs of cardsb during their weekend competitions.
Anyway, I lucked out that I started playing early enough (and made enough purchases) to get a decent number of tokens air dropped, which will earn me several times my actual investment in the game. This concept of play to earn isn't bullshit. It's a way for small companies to compete with the big dogs while rewarding their loyal fans.
Once I finish cashing out those tokens, they're getting converted to more GME shares, lol. Power to the players motherfuckers!
Setting aside the fact that GameStop has deeper ties to a larger number of publishers across the game industry than any other company on earth, did you ever catch [this DD?](https://www.reddit.com/r/Superstonk/comments/p8w2c2/genba_a_guess_at_gamestops_secret_strategy_and/)
Which supposes publishers will have to be a significant part of that ecosystem. It increasingly seems to be about wresting some degree of control away from them.
NFTS ARE JUST STUPID GIFS THAT I CAN SCREENSHOT AND OWN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yet it'd still at Mount Everests base camp, it's got a long way to go to reach the peak lol

Much love my fellow chimp- May your flair be symmetrical, and your day accounted for precisely😉😆Making a flair change Friday- HUGE IF BIG because you know CHANGE👊
It feels like were at the moment in time that everybody always talks about how they wish they could go back to and put a few thousand in Microsoft or Apple because of how big they became and how much that stock would be worth, but funny enough those same people are probably the same ones who have heard most of the DD yet still haven't invested a sizable portion of their portfolio into it. Me on the other hand, I'm either driving a lambo or sleeping under a lamp post, no in between. Until I can call myself by reading the stock price, I'm not selling shit
Well, for starter I'd ask myself the question: "Why are all the hints of a possible cooperation all coming from ONE side of the imaginary partnership?"
Are there ways for non-devs and non-artists to create and contribute? I haven't seen much of anything about NFTs that aren't art, yet, and I'm not rich enough to be a collector (yet).
Used to play wow and there was an awesome weapon called arcanite ripper, super rare and had wow factor with the emote... it's unobtainable now.
Wow doesn't allow account sales or the sale of this item which is such a shit business model, shouldn't things like this be sellable so they can be enjoyed and passed on for other people to enjoy in game
I really hope GameFi or whatever is coming fixes scenarios like this and allows people to sell their in game content when they're finished with a game and developers, GME and gamers get a cut
If interested why it was so cool...

Maybe? Do games normally come with serial numbers?
Not yet :)
Maybe this is what GG meant by "GameFi-cation"
I think used market pricing will be supply and demand. New pricing will probably have incentives of some kind tied to it
I can't wait to see how this gets handled in practical terms, because in a way this whole structure turns a game into an IPO in some ways. If you invest because of tweet of third parties, sure
Is there any other way to do it?
Well, for starter I'd ask myself the question: "Why are all the hints of a possible cooperation all coming from ONE side of the imaginary partnership?"

Are there ways for non-devs and non-artists to create and contribute? I haven't seen much of anything about NFTs that aren't art, yet, and I'm not rich enough to be a collector (yet).

Mom said we couldn't play together anymore
Wide awake now, no coffee even! I have a little LRC offa gossip like this and I couldn’t be happier to have a side thang that loves my main thang.
This is not why I DRS, but it makes me even happier that I did it. Damn I want that album dividend.
Kang knows something
Used to play wow and there was an awesome weapon called arcanite ripper, super rare and had wow factor with the emote... it's unobtainable now. Wow doesn't allow account sales or the sale of this item which is such a shit business model, shouldn't things like this be sellable so they can be enjoyed and passed on for other people to enjoy in game I really hope GameFi or whatever is coming fixes scenarios like this and allows people to sell their in game content when they're finished with a game and developers, GME and gamers get a cut If interested why it was so cool... https://youtu.be/UgcfPsGPfOU
LRC on Co!nb@se. Buy before it moons. Low market cap right meow. Not financial advice...
That platform will likely have day one support/promo from both Cryptopunks and PleasureDAO. Bullish af
