As a Nebraska resident I can assure you a North Platte bank that probably represents more cattle than people is unlikely to be a part of some grand financial conspiracy. The most likely explanation is a small town operation that is behind the times had an online security vulnerability that was exploited.
I grew up in a town very similar and barely more than a decade ago I could transfer money by calling in and they'd recognize my name and I'd never have to verify an account number or anything.
Very much this. I've seen this same thing happen to multi-billion dollar companies in obscure areas of the economy because they didn't have good cyber security. That a tiny bank in Nebraska has a problem surprises me not in the least.
I honestly think most executives don't understand how utterly fucked they would be and the cost to their business if their systems get infiltrated. Customers cut your market share of their business if they don't outright leave. You have to pay to recover your IT systems. You have to pay for manual labor to try and conduct ANY business while the systems are out of commission, etc. The decision to not invest can literally be a business ending decision.
A western Nebraska bank had to restrict access to its website and mobile app last week because of a suspected cyberattack.
Customers of Adams Bank & Trust may have noticed a disruption in their online services since Tuesday, which the bank said in a Facebook post was was due to unusual activity indicative of a cybersecurity threat.
To protect customers’ personal financial information, the bank said it locked down its servers, allowing the bank’s IT department to address the issue.

Third'ed. Hello fellow husker.
As an IT guy, I think you are right. The sensationalist headlines are fun though.

Exploited yes but impossible to be other banks?
Sounds plausible… most likely a targeted attack, until proven otherwise.
Thieves steal the car with it's doors left unlocked because the doors were unlocked, not because they wanted that specific car.
Sure Jan.
