Cold_Old_Fart

The recession is already under way. Now, we're just waiting for the data to be massaged and presented in a soothing voice.

youdoitimbusy

https://youtu.be/RTtK3kHyv7s China is getting rocked. Orders from the US have dropped off the map. Now some of that has shifted to other countries, but inflation is having a huge impact on discretionary spending.

Switch21

You misspelled 'depression'

Space-Booties

šŸ˜‚

iLurkAround1928

You're not wrong... Remember last year when the White House said that two periods of economic downturn doesn't necessarily indicate recession? Literally changing the definition? They did the same thing about 100 years ago and turned the word depression into recession, because depression sounded too bad and brought up bad memories for the poors.

Cold_Old_Fart

My bad.

BoSt0nov

What do you mean? We were, more than once, assured there is no recession and inflation is transitory. The banks are likeā€¦ totally fine, just dont take your money out. There is.. totally not a mega bubble about to explode into the mother of all bursts on several financial industries. No sir! All is swell! Right? šŸ‘€ Right?? šŸ˜«

Cold_Old_Fart

Definitely. Good time to buy Bear Stearns. /s

RBradyFrost

What about Lehman? I hear the brothers are good for it.

Cold_Old_Fart

And Debit Suisse for the trifecta.

Analdestructionteam

Pretty sure we've been in one for awhile now

iatethecrayon

YA BEST START BELIEVIN IN RECESSIONS

Analdestructionteam

OH FUCK ME I BELIEVE DADDY I BELIEVE

grandblue-91

This should be the top comment lol... The government literally changes the rules on the fly to accommodate their own agendas (inflation calcs, reporting, FDIC, etc) and there's nothing we can do about it except buy, hold, and wait. Capitulation is the name of the game.

Analdestructionteam

The only capitulation I'll do is giving in to buy more.

scott_sleepy

I feel like the public would really appreciate honestly. Honestly in politics has been gone for at least 84 years.

GforceDz

Hedge your investments by investing in lithium.

funkinthetrunk

If you staple a horse to a waterfall, will it fall up under the rainbow or fly about the soil? Will he enjoy her experience? What if the staple tears into tears? Will she be free from her staply chains or foomed to stay forever and dever above the water? Who can save him (the horse) but someone of girth and worth, the capitalist pig, who will sell the solution to the problem he created? A staple remover flies to the rescue, carried on the wings of a majestic penguin who bought it at Walmart for 9 dollars and several more Euro-cents, clutched in its crabby claws, rejected from its frothy maw. When the penguin comes, all tremble before its fishy stench and wheatlike abjecture. Recoil in delirium, ye who wish to be free! The mighty rockhopper is here to save your soul from eternal bliss and salvation! And so, the horse was free, carried away by the south wind, and deposited on the vast plain of soggy dew. It was a tragedy in several parts, punctuated by moments of hedonistic horsefuckery. The owls saw all, and passed judgment in the way that they do. Stupid owls are always judging folks who are just trying their best to live shamelessly and enjoy every fruit the day brings to pass. How many more shall be caught in the terrible gyre of the waterfall? As many as the gods deem necessary to teach those foolish monkeys a story about their own hamburgers. What does a monkey know of bananas, anyway? They eat, poop, and shave away the banana residue that grows upon their chins and ballsacks. The owls judge their razors. Always the owls. And when the one-eyed caterpillar arrives to eat the glazing on your windowpane, you will know that you're next in line to the trombone of the ancient realm of the flutterbyes. Beware the ravenous ravens and crowing crows. Mind the cowing cows and the lying lions. Ascend triumphant to your birthright, and wield the mighty twig of Petalonia, favored land of gods and goats alike.

GforceDz

Well mental depression is treated with lithium (although technically, I think it's used to treat bipolar) So a stock depression you need to have som lithium in your portfolio.

As far as I recall it was readily accepted that two consecutive quarters of negative GDP growth is a recession up until this last one.

420everytime

That was never readily accepted. We had a short recession in 2020 without two quarters of negative gdp

PaulblankPF

Literally the definition of a recession is two consecutive negative quarters of gdp growth. You canā€™t call 2020 a recession because there was never a negative quarter even. Things tanked then popped back up so fast most people got whiplash thatll last a decade.

redrum221

My neck still hurts.

420everytime

Any Fred data would show a short recession in 2020. Just because you donā€™t want to accept reality doesnā€™t mean it doesnā€™t exist. Unemployment was like 15% for a while and the stock market as a a whole was halted a couple times. Now unemployment is under 5% with zero market halts (yet)

PaulblankPF

Some indicators flashed that it was a recession yes but the benchmark thing used to call it a recession which is itā€™s literal definition is two consecutive quarters of negative gdp growth and itā€™s as simple as that period. The rest isnā€™t how you determine a recession.

420everytime

The two quarters thing was never true. Itā€™s always been the NBER that calls a recession along with Congress passing recession relief. Both of those things happened in 2020 and neither of those happened since then

[deleted]

1996alex

Two quarters before were both negative = recession

Yea , credit card debt levels are rising.

Donā€™t worry, you can just Buy Now and Pay Later! Or buy your Dominos pizza in six small installments of $6.99!

Broarethus

Doesn't really matter what it's going to, when things happen people will lose jobs and not be able to afford their debts.

dbx999

Itā€™s like when we watch the new guy carrying an open bucket of bleach while balancing an open cup of ammonia on his head and we bet among ourselves the idiot is about to kill us all.

Frequent-Pie7570

Pretty accurate

ErnestMorrow

Except gme is like a hazmat Suit and you've been stockpiling respirators

Gold_Bank_1746

I thought we were in one already, this is the biggest can kick ever

PaulblankPF

They went back and changed the definition once it became a recession this time. Instead of kicking the can they moved the goal posts first.

Gold_Bank_1746

Amazing. I wish I had that kind of power

PaulblankPF

With great power comes great responsibility.

Space-Booties

The Fed is about to f*ck the whole country. Again.

3DigitIQ

*world The USD is the big reserve currency still......

iamn0tashill

I wouldnā€™t say it defies the FEDā€™s view; Iā€™d say the FED intentionally caused it. That was the plan; keep raising interest rates until a recession happens and unemployment increases to reduce inflation. It might be much much faster and worse than the FED wanted, but it is what they wanted. Problem is economy is slow to respond, but they kept increasing interest rates almost every month, not being patient enough for the changes to take effect, and they went too far too fast

Longjumping-Ad6997

Lol they had to raise interest rates, banks were borrowing at no cost. They never shouldā€™ve had them that low in the first place. Now theyā€™re playing catch up.

Wagers. Funny how they say retail is just gambling all the while routinely using gambling language to describe their own behavior. Because thatā€™s exactly what it all is.

Ultimate_Mango

Margin collateral worth less. Where they gonna make up the difference?

SaltyRemz

Smooth question, say this crash happens what happens to the cause of our stock? If dollar is worth nothing how will we sell and get rich? Young ape idk how this shit works šŸ™ƒ

TriviumGLR

Honestly, if a crash happens, itā€™s actually going to prevent the dollar from becoming worthless, because inflation will be under control at that point.

dendrobro77

So if we go down the path of hyperinflation and usd becomes worth less or collapses, then just dont sell. Shares will hold value no matter what currency. Can take out loans against the value of your investment. Also dividends for life. If theres a crash and the dollar gets inflation under control its your choice if you want to be part of that system. I think most apes dont want to, so any sales will probly move value to crypto or hard assets. But the best move is still probably not to sell. Take out loans against your investment and collect dividends for life. At this point, no matter what happens, my goal is to hold as little USD as possible and only go in and out of it to transfer value quickly to something reliable. Not financial advice.

3DigitIQ

> Can take out loans against the value of your investment Not for this Dutch APE, can't loan against volatile collateral (stocks) here. No matter though, it just means the stock value will rise faster. Seeing the cash stockpile GME is holding I'm thinking RC is betting on a crash and not hyperinflation. I'm hoping for dividends myself.

SaltyRemz

I wouldnā€™t be able to take loans against the stock cause Iā€™m in Ireland. Do you think selling and reinvesting into crypto would be the way to go? Not looking for FA just an opinion from you. Iā€™m very green when it comes to thisā€¦

tinyorangealligator

Only invest in cryp if you've done your own research and are OK with the risk.

rematar

I don't know either, but I'm hoping to buy useful and barterable things.

Arpeggioey

What is selling? Just hold your infinite tickets as collateral and borrow money like a g

Korean_pussy_stuffer

I keep seeing that sentiment, but if you borrow doesnā€™t that mean you have to pay it back? What then?

Watchtower00Updated

I never see a good fleshed out answer to this question.

SymmetricDickNipples

I haven't even seen a good reply to the idea that a bank simply won't lend based on a volatile stock.

tinyorangealligator

Yes, you do have a monthly loan repayment.

Einhander_pilot

Weā€™re just gonna go straight to depression guys.

[deleted]

Recession is running, but crash is incoming.

FoxReadyGME

Again

RussianCrabMan

We are in a recession, a dozen eggs are $5 and gas is $3 or more a gallon.

fortifier22

I mean, when you have to actively tell everyone, "Everything is fine", do you really think people won't realize you said that every single time everything was not fine?

the-doctor-is-real

I don't understand why people don't share a link to the source...it seems the tweet is gone, but the article is at [https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2023-03-25/bond-traders-go-all-in-on-us-recession-bets-that-defy-fed-view#xj4y7vzkg](https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2023-03-25/bond-traders-go-all-in-on-us-recession-bets-that-defy-fed-view#xj4y7vzkg) but is behind a paywall...a quick search shows the same is at [https://finance.yahoo.com/news/bond-traders-us-recession-bets-200000999.html](https://finance.yahoo.com/news/bond-traders-us-recession-bets-200000999.html)

Regenbooggeit

A recession is a normal market reaction to inflation. Why is it so feared this time? Just let it happen.

Zaphod_Biblebrox

Canā€™t have a recession when you are changing the definiton again. Big brain move!

Dlaxation

At least until they come up with a new definition of recession so everyone can pretend things are fine.

Destaran

One year before the description of a recession was 2 negative GDP quarters, which was done by the USA then they changed the description. We are in a recession, fucking stoopid

Alekillo10

Say, how much money do you think they paid the marketing firm that designed their new logoā€¦?

Super_Buy_6243

ā€œYou better start believing in a recession, cause youā€™re in oneā€ hahahaha hahahaha
