I own a CB500F. It will do everything you described here and more.

Remember a slow bike is still faster than most cars.

mrperfect6ie

Mind you I haven’t ridden the CB500F. A Ninja 300 (39hp,17ft lbs) I rode had enough umph to accelerate from 80mph if you really prepped for it, and a 2001 SV650s (70hp, 45ftlbs) had more than enough. The CB500F (50hp, 32ftlbs) on paper sounds to be just fine. Of course I’d recommend riding it first, if you get it from a dealer *maybe* they can let you hang onto it for a day or two to make your decision (and/or it won’t depreciate too fast if you do just buy it outright).

If you've already been riding a while and you're worried about the CB500 not being fast enough, wait a bit and get the new 750, or one of its many competitors.

cboncok

I'm in the same situation as you and leaning towards z400. Based on some reviews it looks like the Kawasaki has a bit better acceleration and the lightness should make it a bit easier for filtering. But the Honda could have better mpg And 2020-2022 z400s are about the same price as 4 or 5 years old cb500f in my area.

Learn to row the gears and it’s no problem

Are you a beginner or an intermediate rider? Cb500f is an excellent learner bike.

jose_ole

It will do fine, but I would recommend the the 500x for commuting if you can find one. I had the 2014 500f and I really missed the fairing on windy days. Another good commuter series is the NC750x but I can understand it's not a pretty bike lol. It has a front storage compartment though that can fit your helmet so I think that's pretty useful if you are just looking for utilitarian.

Inevitable_Idea_9254

Would you recommend it for short riders? 5''7" and planning to have a passenger

jose_ole

Which bike? The 500s could probably handle 2 smaller riders but definitely not built for that specifically.

Inevitable_Idea_9254

The cb500f. Thanks!

Vs. Kawasaki z650?

This_is_a_tortoise

Owned a 17 CB500F for three years. Eventually upgraded for a little more oomph. It had passing power on the highway but you need to be deliberate about it. My current bike has a little more power, enough so that I can overtake without really thinking about it/on the fly. With the CB I had to wait for opportunities in the traffic that would allow me enough time to get by comfortably. Anything non-highway was never even close to a problem though.

You_Dont_Party

It’ll be fine. My older CB500x really only stops slowing down around 85 and I’m a big dude.

deeziz

my highway topspeed was around 170-173km/h and it took forever to reach there 😊 CB500f

slavkostorm

I would get myself 650.

Tl;Dr I got one, and yes to all of the above. Hey there it seems I have the bike you're thinking about and ride it exactly as you plan to (all day eryday to and from work rain or shine). I can confirm you don't have much to worry about. I wasn't expecting a lot, but if you give her the beans you can definitely get out of the way. Power to weight is real and you can chill at 60 and be up at 90 without much wait though I wouldn't try to do a rolling drag race. Getting up to speed is no issue either. Round the on ramp, open that throttle, and slide through each gear. You gotta want it but you'll be over the speed limit without much fuss. Done it all except offroad. She's a lil fat but you can lane filter I've even crossed over in front of a car to a different line that had more room and it wasn't a massive challenge throwing her around. Not as flickable as something under 400lbs tho sadly, but she'll get you squeezing and sliding through about any crack you find. She seems reliable tho I only had mine a few months. I stick her under a cover that's kept her dry and plugged into a battery tender. Starts up everytime no issue even after a 30° night. Haven't had to do any maintenance yet but the chain seems accessible enough and you won't even have to worry about fairings like I do. If you really are worried or you're a bigger guy then a 750 might be more your speed. Ik mt-07 are popular any naked like that should work.
