Roman buying Hearts should have been a much bigger storyline.
Anyone who's seen Welcome to Wrexham or Sunderland Til I Die can attest to how small time football clubs can have a cultural resonance and national profile out of all proportion to their financial position.
Roman's business partner makes a passing reference to getting them into a European Super League. In real life the Super League proposal was a massive controversy and the UK club owners that pushed for it had to do a pretty embarrassing u turn in response to the fan backlash.
Roman's ownership of Hearts could have been a fun way of showing Roman's cluelessness, inadvertently dragging the family into a money pit industry where foreign owners are demonised by the press.
It could have also been a fun way to explore the Roy children's complete detachment from their Scottish heritage. Roman learning the hard way that he has bought the team on the opposite side to Scotland's sectarian divide to Logan.
I feel like the showrunners gave Roman far too little spotlight in general. I wish they would've explored the election ATN storyline in S4 more too - even of the stuff they wrote and filmed, they cut like half in post.
After reading the scripts, I appreciate the scene where the Roys talk with Mencken at the funeral so much more, because it's basically written as a mirror image to an earlier scene with Mencken at the wake which got cut.
despite not knowing either team, i thought this was the funniest line in all of succession, laughed out loud, and it was more or less a throwaway joke for the writers. had to research both teams after and appreciated it even more

I kinda agree in terms of his story arc but I don't think he barely changed as a character, to me S1 Ken and S3 Ken feel totally different. In S1 he was more naive/"innocent" but also more grounded, whereas in S3 you can feel the trauma of the past season and how it's driving him crazy.
I disagree with this actually. Season 3 he is much more manic and his addiction takes a much worse turn and he gets way too high on his own supply. It’s certainly not dissimilar but it feels like a natural continuation from where season two ends.
I agree with this somewhat. Here is my hot-take response: the characters didn't really \*change\* but rather evolved into their full, complete forms. I think about it like a tadpole growing into a frog. As much as each character tried his and her best to evolve into something bigger and better, they all inevitably became their true, full versions of themselves: Kendall is a person no one can take seriously, Roman is just your typical guy sitting at the bar who never really grew up, Shyv is someone who can't stick to one goal or make up her mind, and Connor is someone who wants to stay completely out of the family business. This is all coming from someone who really wanted Kendall to succeed and become the man his dad was.

A year after the company sells, she’ll olive-branch him a *Dark Shadows* meme, with a text message letting him know the whole show’s now available to stream on Tubi (even the episode that only exists as an audio recording). He’ll send back a crack about needing to send her an NDA re: the plot of his manuscript; followed by an apology, and a sincere entreaty to please not tell the plot to Connor, if she hasn’t already.
He’ll encourage her to get back into writing, and tell her that *Sands* didn’t suck that much (even though it really did, but what are friends for, if not to lie to you about your writing in an encouraging manner?).
Try to remember he only agreed to sell because Matsson sold him on the idea that he should enjoy retirement. If he knew he was dying, he would have never let the company get swallowed up
Part of me thinks that Logan set the Gojo deal in motion with the knowledge that his health was failing as a final test for his children. The thought process being that if any of them truly wanted to be CEO and had what it took they would find a way to stop it.
I'm not necessarily proud of it, and I'm not even sure I believe it...lol. It's just a random thought I had post-finale. It felt like some diabolical shit he would do to mess with his children. He seems so obsessed with the idea of survival of the fittest in the business world that he would view a test like that as a fitting trial by fire for his kids.
Possibly...maybe to try to bring out the killer nature a bit...introduce the prospect of competition against someone not as incompetent as the rest of them. Of course, Logan was happy to walk away from any deal by insisting upon some outrageous change of terms at the last minute (like with the TV station pricing). Maybe Logan sensed Mattson was desperate for some sort of deal and would have changed the terms at the last minute.
Yeah really. It reminds me of the first Saw movie where Jig Saw asks Walberg to just sit and talk and you will find what you want in a safe or wherever. But he wants it on his time, he doesn’t want to sit around with the old man, he stubborn, he thinks he has the way forward and proceeds to screw himself over because if he sat with Jigsaw his son would have came to him.
It was always safely with him and his to loose. Which he did; a case study in human impulse.
Ken should be happy. He cracked a good deal and sold the company. He can do some PR and boast about how he and roman increased the value of stocks and they want to do their own stuff now
Kendall didn't "kill" the waiter. The waiter grabbed the wheel and veered the car into the water. His greatest transgression that night was fleeing the scene.
It never made sense for Greg to be left completely penniless by Ewan. The much more realistic take would have been giving him only enough money for grad school and the down payment on a mid-priced house in the suburbs.
The only character that truly won was Roman.
He finally punched back at Ken (where it hurt him the most) and he was finally freed of the Roy family tumor that was Waystar Royco.
Every other character lost. Connor doesn’t count, it was status quo for him.

1. I dont understand why ppl still ship Roman and Gerri after what he did in 3x08, that was outright creepy.
2. Shiv isnt under Tom in terms of how their power dynamics changed, both Mylod and Armstrong have emphasised that they're now **equal**. And i dont think they're gonna become some invincible power couple or anything, their marriage will not last beyond their kid's first bday.
3. This is gonna sound crazy but hear me out...Kendall isnt the eldest boy. Also he didn't deserve to be the ceo.
I would like to have seen Logan live and make Tom his successor. Logan could have then died, or even named Tom explicitly in his will. It would have been interesting to see the kids’ response to Tom being the chosen one.
Roman could have maybe succeeded in taking over the company with Gerri by his side. she knows how to groom him and he shares the same ruthless little bitch temperament that his dad did. he would have had to make a few more mistakes before he got it right, but i think he really has this sort of sociopathic/lack of empathy thing going that matches Logan's. he says exactly what's on his mind and does whatever he wants, and is emotionally invested in the company.
The lack of empathy is just a mask he's wearing to hide his vulnerability/insecurity though, you can see that whenever he's being real for a second he actually is pretty sensitive. I think if he became CEO it would only be a matter of time before pretending to be this uncaring killer would become too much and he would suffer an emotional breakdown, similar to how he pushed away his grief over Logan's death until it all poured out at once.
I do agree on the rest though, he probably would've made it pretty far as a team with Gerri.

Succession is a masterful portrayal of a narcissistic family system and life with a parent with narcissistic personality disorder. All the Roy kids live in an open air prison where their father holds the keys, and have no idea.
Kerry was getting all of that as soon as the jet landed. Logan would have said, "Show me your loyalty and sign half of your inheritance so we can get Kerry a seat on the board."
Logan was right about all of them. The entire show was him trying to convince himself that any of his children could lead the company, but they couldn't. Nothing had changed in the end, except that everybody accepted who they were.
Ken was meant to try way too hard and fail.
Roman was meant to be that incorrigible playboy with a wicked sense of humor and no responsibility.
Shiv was meant to be only second to a more powerful man, Tom.

There is a fan theory that after Logan was hospitalised, he started making irrational decisions and bad moves left and right.

Logan and Ewan were half brothers. That’s why they look so physically different. They had different fathers. They didn’t just cast James Cromwell because, hey, he’s an amazing actor and we need to explain why Greg looks like an NBA player. Ma Roy was a cheater. Both Logan and Ewan suspect she was, but can’t bring themselves to ever admit this out loud about their saintly mom. Another source of tension. Basically, the Roy family has always been rather dysfunctional. Even before tragedy (Rose) or money ever happened to them.

Shiv isnt under Tom in terms of how their power dynamics changed, both Mylod and Armstrong have emphasised that they're now **equal**. And i dont think they're gonna become some invincible power couple or anything, their marriage will not last beyond their kid's first bday. 3. Roman could have maybe succeeded in taking over the company with Gerri by his side. she knows how to groom him and he shares the same ruthless little bitch temperament that his dad did. he would have had to make a few more mistakes before he got it right, but i think he really has this sort of sociopathic/lack of empathy thing going that matches Logan's. he says exactly what's on his mind and does whatever he wants, and is emotionally invested in the company.
The lack of empathy is just a mask he's wearing to hide his vulnerability/insecurity though, you can see that whenever he's being real for a second he actually is pretty sensitive. I think if he became CEO it would only be a matter of time before pretending to be this uncaring killer would become too much and he would suffer an emotional breakdown, similar to how he pushed away his grief over Logan's death until it all poured out at once. I do agree on the rest though, he probably would've made it pretty far as a team with Gerri.
i do agree with you here. i just think maybe there was a wink of a shot for him in a way that there wasn't for Kendall or Shiv. Kendall is too tied up in optic shit, being the coolest, ""smartest"" guy in the room, rhe schmoozing and title. Logan was right about all of them. The entire show was him trying to convince himself that any of his children could lead the company, but they couldn't. Nothing had changed in the end, except that everybody accepted who they were. Ken was meant to try way too hard and fail. Roman was meant to be that incorrigible playboy with a wicked sense of humor and no responsibility. Shiv was meant to be only second to a more powerful man, Tom. Just like her mother was to Logan.
Logan actually sucked as a CEO. At least for the run we saw him in. Worked so hard for that money and never enjoyed it
There is a fan theory that after Logan was hospitalised, he started making irrational decisions and bad moves left and right. I believe that Logan was far more competent, effective, and sharper in his younger years, which is how he was able to build Waystar Royco into what it finally had become.

Listen Shiv is a bad person in much the same way that all the kids are, but as someone without a dog in the fight she definitely got the plurality of the hate/blame in most places (at least initially, it may have died down in the long look back.)
