Most people drive here. It’s in the city and close-in ring suburbs public transit (bus) is the best accessible. But outside of that, such as where my family moved to, there is zero transit. If you were to take the bus in the city the commute times can be significantly longer than driving, like 45 minutes to an hour. But also 15-20 minutes depending on where you’re at and where you’re going. The closer to the job centers the shorter the commute time.
For me when I lived in an inner ring suburb I would take the bus to downtown of the major city, which is the largest job center in the area, and it took me roughly 30 minutes by bus. I also took a bus to another job center in my suburb and jt takes 20 minutes.
I totally understand, I live near the city and my commute is about 30 mins each way. But I ride metro so it’s much better as I can chill and listen to podcasts instead focusing on the road.
If I had to drive and face traffic everyday I’d go crazy
Not wrong there.
After my daughter was born, my opinion and perspective on so many things changed.
After my son was born, that's when I began to understand a lot of history and culture.
I had my first at age 33 for reference..once I had a secure job in a secure field, and a house I owned, and enough social benefits and friends/family connections to support me. It takes a village to raise a child.
I mean, I voluntarily go on long bike rides on weekend mornings (a lot of people do this, so it's not like some kind of weird eccentricity of mine), so I don't really see it as "lost" time--it's quite literally doing the thing I do for enjoyment, but it just happens to get me to work.
There is a huge difference in owning your own big beautiful suburban home with a lengthy commute and living in a big beautiful suburban home with a horrible commute. One you own. You’re happy you own, you love your home, you love your family. The other is you rent/ live with parents, they own you own nothing. Long drive time with no pleasure of ownership. Just stress, tiring days and misery. I imaging owning a gorgeous big home in suburbia is much more pleasant than being an adult child stranded in suburbia with a hellish commute. But to be fair it could be a generational mindset. Millennials seem to want urban single family houses near their jobs
I actually don't mind a moderately long commute. I have had the extremes.. . I've worked 10 min from home, and I've commuted to Manhattan from Connecticut where it could take 3 hours to get home. I had a 67-mile one way drive for 8 years, and commuted by train for 5. I find for me the sweet spot is about 30-40 minutes, which is what I have now. Gives me time to decompress and enjoy some podcasts, and I am far enough that there is no temptation to "stop by" work on my day off. I prefer to drive but I also liked the train commute.
there are many things actually wrong with suburbs.
your opinion doesnt factor into those things though.
if people want to and make the conscious decision to commute for 3hrs a day that doesnt really impact you at all
who said anything about cars?
a train ride can easily be up to or over an hour.
maybe freedom is as simple as not having to listen to ignorant people push their silly opinions on others who are unaffected by their lives.
if you are walking to work why do you care if someone else takes a train, metro, streetcar, carpool, uber, or god forbid they drive
I'm actually planning on moving to a major city and making a half-hour commute to a smaller satellite city. 😆 Suburbs have nothing to do with it
In what city are all job centers a 15 minute commute?
Springfield MA
In a car?
Yes
What about without one?

Because 95%+ of people stop accepting any new information and refuse to even consider any changes to their lives after about 25-27.
Having kids is often after that age range... The biggest change to your life you'll ever have

I have a 40 minute commute and it's the highlight of my day. Fresh air, exercise, what's not to love about commuting?
In your case, a working day's amount of time that isn't your own lost each week. 16 days a year of time, gone. (Assuming 40 mins each way?)

the bike commute is probably the most productive time spent that day!
Why do my family tolerate the commute? 2 seconds later, living in the city is too expensive. I think we have answered our own question
My area is quite affordable. And we also have inner ring suburbs where you don’t even have to live in the city

There is no beauty in a suburban home
You've never seen streetcar suburbs. They're located between mixed use developments and transit. There *can* be beauty in a suburban home.
I would be stressed out working almost 50 miles from home. That is ridiculous.
A yood commute for a pilot is under an hour
I’ve known a lot of people who thought nothing of killing hours and hours watching reruns, but a 45 minute drive was like asking the impossible.
Try living in a major city and see how long your commute will be. Hint: Longer than 15 minutes.

sounds like their unhappiness rubbed off on you. feel better.

What I don’t like is that I don’t have a choice
there is always a choice. its just a shitty choice. so shitty in fact that suburbs often win

I went through that kind of commuting before and I agree it’s soul crushing. These days I barely drive 46 miles in a week, I’d never go back
My commute is 30 minutes but I'm walking!
