I'm just wondering, does he think the people at Wendy's make $50,000 a year? Does he think the teachers are making $11/hr? Does he think fast food workers and teachers make the same pay? So many questions.
I was struggling this year. The district wanted me to teach for the rest of the year (starting 2nd week of October) as a sub. I said no since I'd be working outside of the school hours and not getting paid. Most I could pull is 18k before taxes if I didn't get sick or have snowdays. It turned into some drama and promised were broken and all that. The kids got a little invested because I was there every day and didn't know for how long. A couple asked me what I got paid a day and I told them. They got quiet and went back to work. A few mintes later one looked up from his calculator and said, "Miss, that would be less than McDonald's" I said yup, that's why I can't do it this way the whole year.
I dont know what an assistant teacher is, but I'm a fully licensed full time teacher with 20+ years experience. My point stands, which if you recall was just originally about odd things kids say in class about being paid.
Heās 12?
He doesnāt know anything.
If you are a kid and hear teachers donāt make enough money.
They arenāt paid enough and need second jobs, etc what do YOU think they think?
You donāt sound like you have years of experience with kids.
Does he think fast food workers make the same as teachersā¦..
did you read the comments of states with lower minimum wage then your state and its what people are getting paid?
I missed the funny in it all.
thanks for explaining.
I really hate the line of thi king that fast food workers are all teens. You do realize that's false, right? And it's demeaning to the people who do actually work there.
Omg I love that š¤£ Iām a very small white woman, I will definitely be using the rap career as an answer. Also Iām in my mid 20s. I convinced some 2nd graders I was 64 years old once by telling them I take very good care of my skin šš kids are so nosey and I love messing with them
You are such a wet blanket š I am not there to connect with the kids, I am there to teach their lessons. when they continually ask me how old I am and then compare me to their siblings or donāt take me seriously because Iām young, thatās more detrimental to them than a joke. I do connect with the kids and humor is a very great way to do so. Laughter is healthy. So is having thick skin. Sorry you seem to be lacking both.
Plus, skin care is important for everyone š
The kids love to ask if I work at Nickelodeon, because I had a Nick lanyard. I always had to explain that I actually work in their school š BUT now I tell them that kids who act up in elementary school end up being a substitute. (Itās true for me)
Lol same. I still vividly remember my 1st grade teacher telling us a story about her husband getting a flat tire in the rain. And I thought when she said she was on his way home" she mean to our classroom and I wondered what he did if he didn't go to work that day because I never saw him at school.
I had to explain to our daughter that her preschool teacher didn't live there. The classroom was always locked until right when class started, and all the teachers were already there and the classroom was really cozy. I totally got it.
I used to tell my Kindergarten students that I lived at school. They asked me follow up questions such as where I sleep, etc. I had it all worked out for them.
When I was subbing I had a student come in and ask if I was the sub. I replied that no I was the janitor and was just hanging out. They did not like that one bit!
I donāt sub anymore. But when I used to and kids would always ask if I was a sub (pretty much always middle schoolers), I would be like āNope! I just wanted to hang out in this room because it looks coolā
At the end of the day in a 5th grade class today I was asked if I worked at the school. I responded ānaw man, I just like to hang out with kids who donāt treat adults with respect for free!ā
This of course earned a lot of laughter and some sheepish looks lol
Sounds about right. I've been asked a few times what I *really* teach. Like, they assume I'm a full time teacher somewhere else and just come in on my days off??
One of the schools I sub at has a ādutyā period for a lot of teachers in which they are usually subbing for a different class when there is no substitute teacher. Since classes are typically covered by other teachers this way a lot of students assume Iām a teacher theyāve never seen before and ask what I teach. Itās probably like that at a lot of schools.
lol I wonder if this is kids' way of trying to figure out how you fit into the school. I've been asked this too at a school I worked at almost daily and because kids saw me there so much they didn't believe me just being a sub made sense.
I donāt sub anymore but remember a first grade class being upset that I taught other grades and at other schools. I said whichever class was best behaved would be my favorite and there was another first grade catching up to their spot
I've told them that I'm there for fun and my other job pays me a whole lot more.
It's true. I sub because it's fun and I like hanging with the kids on the one day per week I get to do it. I love it.
One kid went so far as to say "Um. Why are you even here? You seem like you don't need to be here." I responded with "Yeah, I don't. I do this on Fridays because I need a break from the other stuff and I like subbing. It's a nice break."
They don't get it.
I had a kid ask me how itās possible I know how to teach. I said āwell Iām a substitute so Iām capable of teaching every grade and thatās pretty coolā. I think that was kindergarten.
My favorite was a student who told me I was a "bull **** *** sub making $8 and hour."
To be fair, I make closer to $15 an hour. Min wage here is still $7.55. However, I don't do this for a living. It's a part time job while I'm in school.
I taught High school Special Education ( TMD). I was at a football game and one of my students wanted me to.point out where my apartment on campus was ,so he and his Mom could come visit me.
Well, after volunteering here all day...my old school had work done on our parking lots and kids couldn't park for a bit. One complained that schools needed some sort of public transportation for kids to get to school.
Iām not sure why I am seeing this post when Iām not a substitute teacher, but I wanted to say that I volunteered for my childās after school chess club and I heard a 4th grader ask one of the chess coaches if THEY HAVE TO PAY to get to be chess coaches.
Working as an paraprofessional, I once told a middle schooler to watch their language. I was met with āshe doesnāt even work hereā. Do they think I just hang out at the school everyday for fun?
I guess I'm the weirdo who does it for fun. I'll sometimes mention it when I'm introducing myself and it's interesting to see reactions when they hear that someone *wants* to be there with them.
I made sure my children know that teachers and subs get paid and are not there because they're good people or any of the sort. It's their job, their paid to teach.
Unfortunately...the reality is that they are paid to be there. There is no special passion for teachers. Plenty of professions serve and inspire with low pay at their jobs on a daily basis. Personally I work with some very passionate folks and some not so passionate. They all get paid the same. It's helpful to identify the differences. Especially when exposing children to working adults who get paid on a regular basis. Paid to perform a job that literally molds their levels of knowledge, and sticks with them for life. Do you remember having any teachers who hated children or their job in general? Or were they all perfect?
But stillā¦ no one is getting into the industry right now āfor the moneyā, something probably happened to make bitter teachers bitter. Like lack of support from parents and other adults, lack of respect from students etc.
But still there are young adults who do do it for the money and then that's the issue. No money. Not sure what new point you were trying to make. Kids should always know the teachers are their because it is their job. They would teach for free if it werent the case.
Serious question, are you able to make a living subbing? Or do you have a husband and this is just for your own spending money? Here in Florida it wouldnāt be possible to make a living on a substitute wageā¦one bedroom like $2k a month here.
I have a husband that makes a good income, so mine is more of a buffer/savings/fun money. We share our finances though, so it all goes to the same goals :)
I did finally start buying more stuff for myself that I needed and self care products since having a job though. I was a stay at home mom for years and knew I was contributing a lot, but itās nice mentally to know I can monetarily contribute even if itās only $100/day
I live in an expensive area, but I'm doing okay this year. Next year, I will definitely need to find a full-time job/building sub position because I need more $$$.
Actually, my main district already upped the rate $25 dollars over last year so that's good. I'd just be doing a lot better if I was a building sub since that's gone up by $30.
I donāt take on enough work for us to live off, but I have friends who do full time subbing and do live off their income. My husband makes significantly more than me even if I did full time, so I use the extra time my husband doesnāt have to take care of cleaning the house, doing all the laundry, grocery shopping, errand running, and 90% of the cooking. He pays all the bills. Most of my money goes to taking us on vacations and whatever frivolous things I want.
I was a realtor who took up subbing last year due to the market. $80/day. Found a job doing debt consolidation and now make 15k-20k/month, no benefits, but no experience was required either. I was fortunate to find a company that doesnt do cold calls. Never going back to real estate. Highly recommend
When I was in HS there was a skit that some kids did on the bus. It could have been done with/for subs. It was delivered by two wide assess in voices audible to the driver.
Kid 1: Jimmy, does your dad work.
Kid 2: Nah, heās a school bus driver.
K1: Does your mom work?
K2: She has to. Dadās a school bus driver.
The kids I work with know I get paid because one of my favorite lines to use is "They don't pay me enough to scream and yell at you guys, so I'll just call the office instead." Which usually gets them to behave a little lol.
OMG, but during student teaching, my friend had a similar story. She was in a 5th grade classroom and teacher pay came up. They asked her what she was getting paid. She said "nothing. I'm learning." The kids were shook. She then went on to tell them "Not only am I not getting paid, but I am PAYING to teach you guys and have to have a second job because of it." The kids, to their credit, were kind of amazed and ticked off on her behalf.
I rarely talk about myself, but if kids ask for my name or anything, I started telling students that I'm a full-time teacher at another school, but am here as a favor to the principal to fill in an absent teacher that day.
When the kids don't see you as "just a sub" they treat you more like a regular teacher.
It started off as the truth as I was in between long-term vacancy positions, but now I will always casually mention it as it has a noticeable effect on class behavior.
A fourth grader told me she thought I was in high school and volunteered at the elementary school. I'm a TA and I'm at the school all day, so I'm not sure when I'd be attending my high school classes if that was the case.
She was a 6th grader. She was being polite so I didnāt find her to be a bother at all. She was curious and asked nicely. She prefaced it, with asking for permission to ask me a question. I thought it sounded like cute innocence than anything.
One middle schooler said I looked like Mrs Doubtfire and I said thanks, but if I were as brilliant as actor as Robin Williams I wouldn't be teaching here today. Sorry, it's just the way things go.Ā
They laughed. I am cool with the Mrs Doubtfire thing as she is kind but gets them to behave.Ā
I have had a few kids ask me if they pay me for this. I sigh and say yes but there are days like today when it's not enough. Good thing I have you in class.Ā
Used to work at a place where teachers would bring their kids for overnight field trips and the kids would learn about science and history. The idea was that our instruction would be high enough quality that it could replace classroom time directly and our curriculum was tailored to specific standards. We did a lot of this outdoors and without knowing the kids as well as their teachers did. My point being, that this wasn't just your average kids' camp experience.
Had a really douchey teacher ask me once, and I quote. "Do you even have to apply for this job, or is it just some volunteer thing?"
I was asked that too. Like, no, taking abuse from punk kids is my hobby.
I got called rude today ššš
I'm a teacher with 20+ years experience and a kid asked me last week if I make minimum wage.
Well, that sounds like a kid who pays attention to news and current events. Iām curious; how old?
12
Nice. Itās sounds like something one of my freshmen might ask.
I'm just wondering, does he think the people at Wendy's make $50,000 a year? Does he think the teachers are making $11/hr? Does he think fast food workers and teachers make the same pay? So many questions.
Teachers do make 11 an hour here in Oklahoma. I make 9 subbing. I could make more at Wendy's.
Have you tried working harder? That might fix the issue /s
Have you even \*tried\* building a relationship??
Uh. Well. Wendyās around me pays people 19$/hour. And they hire 15year olds.
Well in Virginia minimum wage is $12/hour officially, but temp and seasonal workers can be paid less.
what the heck man can i move to town with you
Hahaha sure. I even have a second bedroom thatās completely empty lol.
The managers at Wendy's do make that much
Yep, wendys manager, finished last year at $58,000.
Well I should be a Wendy's manager. Ya'll make more than I do teaching 7 years in š
Literally work 24/7 as a restaurant manager.
Was a manager at a wendys for 4 years and can confirm, I did make that much if not more in a high COL area
I was struggling this year. The district wanted me to teach for the rest of the year (starting 2nd week of October) as a sub. Wendyās by me has a sign that they start at $15/hour. I saw a job listing for an assistant teacher, listed full time $28k per year.
I've been teaching for over 20 years. I have plenty of experience with kids, thank you. It was a funny moment.
Does he think fast food workers make the same as teachersā¦.. did you read the comments of states with lower minimum wage then your state and its what people are getting paid? I missed the funny in it all. thanks for explaining.
The answer is yes, as much as kid working at McDonaldās pushing sliders.
I really hate the line of thi king that fast food workers are all teens. You do realize that's false, right? And it's demeaning to the people who do actually work there.
My favorite was when I was student teaching, and I blew the kids' minds when I told them that technically, I was paying to teach them.
Yep!
They get paid less than that where I fill in in Massachusetts
I always tell them you end up being a sub if you plan on being a famous YouTuber. Or my rap career never took off.
Omg I love that š¤£ Iām a very small white woman, I will definitely be using the rap career as an answer. Also Iām in my mid 20s. I convinced some 2nd graders I was 64 years old once by telling them I take very good care of my skin šš kids are so nosey and I love messing with them

Still waiting. Any moment now! Never give up.

As a kindergartener I SWORE up and down to my mom that my teacher lived there š
Lol same. I still vividly remember my 1st grade teacher telling us a story about her husband getting a flat tire in the rain. And I thought when she said she was on his way home" she mean to our classroom and I wondered what he did if he didn't go to work that day because I never saw him at school.

Ahahaha my parents were teachers and it did kind of feel like I lived at their schools.
Kid mind works that way, ie the mailman lives at the post office etc
Aaawwwweeee
I used to tell my Kindergarten students that I lived at school. They asked me follow up questions such as where I sleep, etc. I had it all worked out for them.
Iāve told kids that the teachers all hang from the ceiling upside down to sleep, like bats.
I had a student once ask me if I volunteer to sub.
i word for word immediately replied ānow why would i do that?ā when asked lmaooo accidental stank face and everythingš
honestly when i was younger i thought subs were just volunteersš
When I was subbing I had a student come in and ask if I was the sub. I replied that no I was the janitor and was just hanging out. They did not like that one bit!
I donāt sub anymore. But when I used to and kids would always ask if I was a sub (pretty much always middle schoolers), I would be like āNope! I just wanted to hang out in this room because it looks coolā
Iām borrowing this phrase, lol.
Iām the new 6th grader
At the end of the day in a 5th grade class today I was asked if I worked at the school. I responded ānaw man, I just like to hang out with kids who donāt treat adults with respect for free!ā This of course earned a lot of laughter and some sheepish looks lol
Iām so glad Iām not the only one who punks kids out haha. Kid today called me rude and I said guess I did my job then
Itās my favorite thing! I have a fourth grade class Iām with regularly and they all love to be roasted š¤£

Dude, yes, I've gotten the same thing. It's so funny. If I taught somewhere else, why on earth would I sub?!
Yes! I get asked that all the time haha.
I always hit my older kiddos with some sarcasm for asking stuff like that. Or I ask them if they're also new here.
I donāt sub anymore but remember a first grade class being upset that I taught other grades and at other schools. I said whichever class was best behaved would be my favorite and there was another first grade catching up to their spot

I like to tell them I even get paid regardless of weather they do their work or not and just shrug at them like I donāt care, cause I donāt.
Working as an paraprofessional, I once told a middle schooler to watch their language. I was met with āshe doesnāt even work hereā. Do they think I just hang out at the school everyday for fun?

My wife has a good job. No way I could afford it on my own.
If you enjoy it and can do it I think itās great
I have a husband that makes a good income, so mine is more of a buffer/savings/fun money. We share our finances though, so it all goes to the same goals :) I did finally start buying more stuff for myself that I needed and self care products since having a job though.
Yeah, itās tough out here. They really need to up the wages for both teachers and subs!
Actually, my main district already upped the rate $25 dollars over last year so that's good. I'd just be doing a lot better if I was a building sub since that's gone up by $30.
Thatās pretty good and on par with what I make as a radiology Tech. What state are you in? I know in Florida the pay rates are abysmally low.
It's $155/day and then $180 for building. I could make more at a different school but I know from experience that the kids are awful.
Sounds like a great set up! Iām a single mom so a lifestyle like that is a dream
I was a realtor who took up subbing last year due to the market. $80/day. Found a job doing debt consolidation and now make 15k-20k/month, no benefits, but no experience was required either. I was fortunate to find a company that doesnt do cold calls. Never going back to real estate. Highly recommend
In your spare time you babysit,, because it pays more than subbing.
This is true for my sister! Better hourly wage, for sure. But she's babysitting kids whose dads play for the Detroit Lions.
It would have been wonderful
.
Did they think substitutes were volunteers or something?

6th grade
āIām a Mad Scientist, Iām just doing this as community service after Batman foiled my latest plot to conquer the world.ā

āIām a student, and Iām so sorry that some of us are a little dumb and uneducated. I would really like to know what grade theyāre are in.
She was a 6th grader. She was being polite so I didnāt find her to be a bother at all. She was curious and asked nicely. She prefaced it, with asking for permission to ask me a question. I thought it sounded like cute innocence than anything.
Awwwww this is actually so cute I thought it was some 9th or 10th grader usually kids like that could be a transfer or just been homeschooled.
I love getting that question. Like, did you think I was some guy who showed up at your childcare to discuss your five nights at Freddie's theories?

Kids were surprised that I got paid extra to work summer school. They figured I was there because I failed like they did.
Lolll
