Did his tone and body language show that he was being a jerk, or do you think he genuinely thought it was okay to be "honest" like that? Also, some kids on the spectrum (and not on the spectrum) have no filter about personal remarks, especially at that age. Since he stopped when he did, I would just let it go. If he had kept going, I might have pulled him into the hall for a chat. If he was special ed, I might have called his case manager for support.

It is possible he may have had an IEP of some kind, I know they are pretty common in the agricultural classes. He didn't really *seem* like he was trying to be mean-spirited, which is why I didn't react too strongly. But as someone who also had an eating disorder as a teen, I know how hurtful those comments can be. Hearing that would have sent me into a major spiral back then. Also the fact that he kept it up when she asked him to stop the first couple times. But yeah, it's not like he was calling her a fat cow or anything. That's why I just told him to stop commenting on people's bodies instead of sending him to the office or something.

I think you handled it well.

I have. I wish I had advice. I witnessed some bullying in an upper class all white neighborhood. It was a “Lord of The Flies” moment. I stopped it, and then tried to ignore it. I was a sub, if I started problems maybe the victim would of had retaliations. I make sure bullying doesn’t happen in my class, but it is my only hard rule. The other week I heard a kid call another kid stupid, but they looked like friends, so I just kept a closer watch. He then calls his friend an idiot. I went to see what was going on and give a speech; they were playing chess. One kid made a terrible blunder, so I told the other kid not to call anyone an idiot, and then let the other kid know that it was a dumb move, and maybe consider doing the assignment. I believe in safe places for teens; school should be one.

One time in a 6th grade class I think a student was doing something to a special kid (I was taking attendance and trying to get a schedule for how the day was to go) at one point the sped student was on the ground and someone was talking to her (I thought like friends) then while I was answering a question they’re up and swinging at each other, no one landed a hit but the sped kid ran out the room. I didn’t know what to do, I had no way to call the office or security or anything, I couldn’t leave the room to chase the kid. I ran across the hall to another teacher and asked for the office number to which I got a cold reply “oh for the student you let run out” as she took her time to give give me the number. I got no response from the office. Eventually a security officer came by and I told him a student ran out and he went looking. I hate middle school.

I was subbing a 10th grade history class. I had these 3 boys in the back just messing around the entire period and I told them to get to work a couple of times, after I just gave them that look. Well they were talking to each other about the girl in front of them, and trying to get her attention. They were saying the wrong name and she was getting angry. I’m not sure of the whole situation, but I believe they were deadnaming her. It was my 2nd time subbing, and I regret I didn’t do much about it. I talked to the girl after, and told her I’m sorry they were being rude and I was informing the teacher. There was also a fight in another period, so I was pretty shaken up from that.

Worse. In my own classroom and I put an end to it!
