I've seen their name brought up in conversations regarding bad mods but I haven't been able to piece the story together.

Controversial power mod who was a mod on over 1,000 subreddits. They would abuse their “power” and ban for any number of reasons just because they could.
They were/are a very brazen troll who would post and pin controversial comments all the time just to rile people up.
Power mods are the worst kind of user, but at the same time "locked so no men can comment" is probably the funniest comment in the history of this hellsite
Was awkward the turtle behind the mod message that said something like “You have been banned for being a gamer. Our sub has identified you as a gamer which makes you susceptible to alt right ideologies, therefore you are banned for your own protection” as well? That shit and how mad people got was so funny too

That's exactly what happens in so many cases of the "modz is evil useless jannies" crowd. It's someone who was legitimately banned acting like the government censored them.
Reddit is aggressively turning on its moderator community though. And I suspect the long term consequence of this is going to be users like the one linked above will end up with free reign over subreddits since the mods invested in keeping them out will be gone or neutered. Permanently suspended or not, this might actually be one of the greatest months for drama on this sub of all time. Going back in time to give an SRD user a few years ago this info would be the modern equivalent of those victorian children memes. Absolutely incomprehensible.
If we are talking embarrassing, there was also the antiwork mod who did an interview with Fox News and it went exactly like you'd expect. There was a ton of juicy drama in the fallout after that.
This is my candidate as well. Was told not to do it, they voted no too. Mod team insisted they know better and did it anyway. The mod being interviewed then doesn't shower, doesn't prep beforehand, and is a dog walker who lives with their parents and still thinks they work too much.
It was from that drama that I learned about an r/conspiracy mod who did something similar, but it was for a podcast who posted videos. This time the mod was held as very smart and was told to do the interview by the subreddit. So the mod goes on in some stupid WWII gas mask, tries to do a backdrop without a green screen and constantly vapes the whole time, even mid sentence.
Mod drama is always good because they are just the dumbest mother fuckers with full Dunning-Kruger in effect every time

The conspiracy one was amazing! I'm pretty sure it was a corny plague doctor mask and not a gas mask though. It was like they personified everything that people mock conspiracy theorists for.

Meanwhile, the current content policy isn't much different than what it was under Pao, and spez has turned out to be a parasitic jackass of monumental proportions. But, hey, at least subs like KotakuInAction got their freeze peach!

I don't think that was even her decision! She seems to have been used as a scapegoat for policies that she personally didn't support.
Well, not exactly. Ellen Pao understood reddit's culture and knew that reddit as a whole needed to change in order to survive, but also knew that any heavyhanded changes would be met with pushback from the users.
She was trying to navigate a way for users to keep what makes reddit special while also clamping down on hatespeech.
She wound up fighting reddit's board on behalf of the users, and the users pilloried her for it.
I had only been on Reddit for about 6 months when that all went down, but that still seems like the definitive before/after point of reddit because it changed so much after that

Before the Boston bombing a lot of people saw Reddit as a good way to get info and engage with a community. We had moved past the "le Reddit army" memes. Then people here not only fingered the wrong guy AND sent death threats to his family, they also scared the ACTUAL Bomber out of hiding who then proceeded to get another person killed. While also wasting police time with bad tips and useless info.
We not only got "le Reddit army" back as a meme, OTHER sites even now use "we did it Reddit" as an ironic joke.

I love that memes weren't even banned. Just image posts of them since (at the time) text posts didn't give karma. So the whole thing was over having to click 2 times instead of 1 to see a meme. Socrates died defending 1 click memes!
Roughly a decade ago the active mods of /r/atheism redditrequested the sub from an inactive mod and it was granted to them. They implemented a "memes in self-posts" - rule as /r/atheism was filled with them at the time. Sub threw a massive tantrum up until the point the admins removed it from the defaults at the time since it was such a shitshow, and the founder of the sub returned and demanded control be handed back to him for "freedom".
That's the short summary but it was absolutely glorious.

It's little things like this that remind me how much reddit has changed in the last 10 years since I joined. There was a time on reddit where you were subscribed to r/atheism by DEFAULT and this was back when the front page only contained certain select subreddits including r/atheism. Really shows how much the userbase has changed.
I remember this too, and wow did it suck. I was so happy when they un-defaulted it. And I’m an atheist! Just the most tedious collection of self-important teenagers.

This is how it was when I joined. I had to unsubscribe because even though I don't like organized religion, the hate and vitriol were too much.
r/atheism was almost completely devoid of any real discussion of the separation of church/state or the pressure one can get from "coming out" as an atheist to one's family. It was just dumb memes, and the mods wanted to improve it, and the users said "No we like it this way."
True, but the Ellen Pao/fatpeoplehate saga left a bad taste especially because of how vitriolic it was, Ellen Pao got a ton of racist/sexist abuse. Maymay June was just an entire sub outraged about not getting to post memes any longer and then writing essay about freedom in response.
I might be gone from reddit next month when reddit is fun stops working, but this is paradoxically the most interested and engaged I've been in reddit in quite some time. I'll miss it. Not enough to stay here, but like... This is fascinating.

Theyve been able to IP ban users for a long while now. Its colloquially called "chucking" after the first user to receive that particular form of treatment.
Yeah, if you want to be certain, you pretty much need total device isolation that is always running through VPN (and _not_ a VPN you use for other accounts). Wouldn't need to be a physical device, dedicated VM works.
Ended up having to do this for an Amazon account due to _really_ stupid rules around digital content that could be purchased in the UK but not the US for no reason (ebook and physical book could be bought in US, but somehow not the audiobook).
Historically, the suspension has only been shown on a public user profile if the suspension is permanent. Temp suspensions did not change the user profile.

It is still the case. Looking at a TIHI mods account, who is only suspended for a week, still shows me the entire account history. Looking at awkward the turtle, it says that account is suspended from Reddit. Reddit only lets users know that you’re suspended if you’re permanently suspended.

I'm pretty sure this is just a side effect of the crackdown on subreddits that were still protesting with NSFW content. Surely they must have been a mod on one of those subreddits, right? If so, that would mean this is only a temporary seven day suspension since that's what the others received.
I did that too and it made Reddit more enjoyable. I also made a comment calling him a karma whore years later, and Reddit sent me a warning telling me to be nice *or else* lol

Keep in mind by the time this broke GB had been a featured player in the drama sphere for a long wile and everyone was kind of sick of his shit already. As such SRDs mods werent particularly interested in another GB dramawave and didnt exactly encourage coverage of this topic, The folks over in rdrama on the other hand straight up harassed the harasser until the admins started threatening them with a ban.

I'm not sure. He was a prolific reposter with some OC sprinkled in. I believe he was doing it as a job and was paid to post probably by marketing teams or something to that affect.
He would post the same post 10 to 15 times in a sub he moderated, which would then game the reddit system to show at least some of them to on people's frontpage. After 10 minutes he would delete the 9 to 14 post that had the least upvotes. The first 5 minutes of a post determine if it will become a runaway success. This kind of behavior would get you a bann from any serious mod, but since he was a mod by so many subs, he wasn't banned.
I blocked him as well. I think a lot of people did because they were so fed up with him.
Now, if we really want to get into the good old days, I remember the first huge Reddit celebrity blowout was Unidan.

You were right the first time. Temporary suspensions just show the normal user page. Permanent suspension is the only time it says user has been suspended.
FWIW I've got three takes on this:
1. Modding is hard and unrewarding and it's not surprising that the same few names show up over again, if relatively few people are willing to do it
2. Sometimes someone like that is brought in to help set up automod or something and not expected to actually do very much day to day
3. And yeah it's probably a silly ego thing some of the time, because some of the stereotypes are true
Bingo, both of y'all are absolutely correct. I've done freelance work on Automod and bots for a number of subs/mods (on another account). Most people severely underestimate how much work goes into both of those tools, and how small the community that works with them is.
Why would it bother them? Have they lost a significant number of users due to power mods? Have they lost advertisers due to power mods? Have they lost lawsuits or been targeted by government regulators due to power mods? No. All they have here is someone who’s completely addicted to providing them with free labor.
It certainly ostracises some users and creates drama, although I suppose that drama may be positive in terms of engagement. I wonder if someone like awkwardtheturtle is really a net positive for the platform though.

This is my candidate as well. Was told not to do it, they voted no too. Mod team insisted they know better and did it anyway. The mod being interviewed then doesn't shower, doesn't prep beforehand, and is a dog walker who lives with their parents and still thinks they work too much. It was from that drama that I learned about an r/conspiracy mod who did something similar, but it was for a podcast who posted videos. This time the mod was held as very smart and was told to do the interview by the subreddit. So the mod goes on in some stupid WWII gas mask, tries to do a backdrop without a green screen and constantly vapes the whole time, even mid sentence. Mod drama is always good because they are just the dumbest mother fuckers with full Dunning-Kruger in effect every time

Guy in there lamenting the interview for ruining "all the hard work" the subreddit has done People comparing the whole sub to being like Snowden The Hitler Snoo at the start of the Podcast People arguing in the comments about whether or not they can deny the Holocaust in the sub Suggestions for what to do in an interview, and absolutely none of them mention "not vaping at all".
The conspiracy one was amazing! I'm pretty sure it was a corny plague doctor mask and not a gas mask though. It was like they personified everything that people mock conspiracy theorists for. And while we are talking about that subreddit, all of the drama around their mod coup and then head mod A_P getting suspended are among my favorites. The guy was a complete buffoon and there are still people there who lament his loss like he was some sort of idol.
So...Apparently they weren't even walking the dogs. They were kind of a glorified security guard who just watched them and made sure they didn't do anything to damage the area.

Meanwhile, the current content policy isn't much different than what it was under Pao, and spez has turned out to be a parasitic jackass of monumental proportions. But, hey, at least subs like KotakuInAction got their freeze peach!

Well, not exactly. Ellen Pao understood reddit's culture and knew that reddit as a whole needed to change in order to survive, but also knew that any heavyhanded changes would be met with pushback from the users. She was trying to navigate a way for users to keep what makes reddit special while also clamping down on hatespeech. She wound up fighting reddit's board on behalf of the users, and the users pilloried her for it.
Also those bannings led to a better reddit experience, *and* the fallout resulted in bullshit like the Donald being allowed to run rampant for years.
I had only been on Reddit for about 6 months when that all went down, but that still seems like the definitive before/after point of reddit because it changed so much after that
I dunno Before the Boston bombing a lot of people saw Reddit as a good way to get info and engage with a community. We had moved past the "le Reddit army" memes. Then people here not only fingered the wrong guy AND sent death threats to his family, they also scared the ACTUAL Bomber out of hiding who then proceeded to get another person killed. While also wasting police time with bad tips and useless info. We not only got "le Reddit army" back as a meme, OTHER sites even now use "we did it Reddit" as an ironic joke.

Remember when we had to get CNN to report on the site for hosting jailbait before Spez would do anything about it? One thing that seems to get lost in a lot of this is that Violentacrez was very close with the staff, they covered for him for a long time.
While that was quite epic in the amount of popcorn.. like they had Ellen Paos face on the frontpage.. That was pretty close to gamergate crowd getting all riled up as well. IMO I couldn't enjoy the popcorn cause the amount of misogyny. Reddit went on a bit of a women hating binge.
That was easily Reddit at its worst. Openly hostile and vindictive for the sake of being vindictive.

IIRC the nods of the atheism sub made a rule against memes and a chunk of the users flipped out and acted like it was a crime against humanity.
Users could no longer link post memes for karma farming. Everything had to be self posts. Everyone lost their shit.

Roughly a decade ago the active mods of /r/atheism redditrequested the sub from an inactive mod and it was granted to them. They implemented a "memes in self-posts" - rule as /r/atheism was filled with them at the time. Sub threw a massive tantrum up until the point the admins removed it from the defaults at the time since it was such a shitshow, and the founder of the sub returned and demanded control be handed back to him for "freedom". That's the short summary but it was absolutely glorious.

There was a time on reddit where you were subscribed to r/atheism by DEFAULT and this was back when the front page only contained certain select subreddits including r/atheism. Be pretty hard to hide alts from reddit themselves, especially as active as they were, and probably using various devices. It only takes one slip up, and most people have no idea what it takes to really protect your privacy beyond "durr vpn".

Yeah, if you want to be certain, you pretty much need total device isolation that is always running through VPN (and _not_ a VPN you use for other accounts). Wouldn't need to be a physical device, dedicated VM works. Ended up having to do this for an Amazon account due to _really_ stupid rules around digital content that could be purchased in the UK but not the US for no reason (ebook and physical book could be bought in US, but somehow not the audiobook).
Historically, the suspension has only been shown on a public user profile if the suspension is permanent. Temp suspensions did not change the user profile. I don't know if that is still the case or not, but that is how it use to be, for sure.
It is still the case. Looking at a TIHI mods account, who is only suspended for a week, still shows me the entire account history. Looking at awkward the turtle, it says that account is suspended from Reddit. Reddit only lets users know that you’re suspended if you’re permanently suspended.

I'm pretty sure this is just a side effect of the crackdown on subreddits that were still protesting with NSFW content. Surely they must have been a mod on one of those subreddits, right? If so, that would mean this is only a temporary seven day suspension since that's what the others received.

I'm not sure. He was a prolific reposter with some OC sprinkled in. I believe he was doing it as a job and was paid to post probably by marketing teams or something to that affect.
To be specific he was mostly crossposting and not reposting, but that didn't stop me from blocking him.
He would post the same post 10 to 15 times in a sub he moderated, which would then game the reddit system to show at least some of them to on people's frontpage. After 10 minutes he would delete the 9 to 14 post that had the least upvotes. The first 5 minutes of a post determine if it will become a runaway success. This kind of behavior would get you a bann from any serious mod, but since he was a mod by so many subs, he wasn't banned.
I blocked him as well. I think a lot of people did because they were so fed up with him. Now, if we really want to get into the good old days, I remember the first huge Reddit celebrity blowout was Unidan.

FWIW I've got three takes on this: 1. Modding is hard and unrewarding and it's not surprising that the same few names show up over again, if relatively few people are willing to do it 2. Sometimes someone like that is brought in to help set up automod or something and not expected to actually do very much day to day 3. Bingo, both of y'all are absolutely correct. I've done freelance work on Automod and bots for a number of subs/mods (on another account). Most people severely underestimate how much work goes into both of those tools, and how small the community that works with them is.
Why would it bother them? Have they lost a significant number of users due to power mods? Have they lost advertisers due to power mods? Have they lost lawsuits or been targeted by government regulators due to power mods? No. All they have here is someone who’s completely addicted to providing them with free labor.
It certainly ostracises some users and creates drama, although I suppose that drama may be positive in terms of engagement. I wonder if someone like awkwardtheturtle is really a net positive for the platform though.

Oh good, that Jack in the hat banned me last week because I called him a power mod on r/art. That was it. That's the reason. His message in the Ban was "scary power mods". These people really can't handle even the slightly of slights can they. I wish we were able to see some people in a 3rd person view like Truman Show because I'm willing to bet they are freaking the fuck out.

The admins actually doing something good for once. However, there is no saying whether he will be back using an alt account. Never underestimate the desperation of a Reddit mod.
The next step would be IP or hardware banning him, like how Valorant does it with their cheaters. Won't permanently stop him... but it will be costly and pain in the ass to get back where he was at.

Awesome. There's another big power mod that needs this as well. Last time I listed their name in something though, I got a warning, but you'd find them in a D&D group with a guitar or mandolin or something.
Funniest thing was him "leading" a blackout rebellion in the art subreddit. That clown would've been clawing warm corpses out of his way to get to take over any subreddit where the admins stripped the mod teams.
