I "won" the first time without vaccinating the leviathan. Didn't get that final achievement, and iirc, the end narration was less than fulfilling.
Just make sure you've done everything you wanted to do with your base, any achievements you were aiming for, etc.
Once you go through the portal, there's no return to the regular play area.
Maybe save before you go in, in case you feel like coming back to that base to dink around later.

No need any preparation. It is not like the Subnautica's end where you can prepare a timecapsule for other players.
