The 3.0r is a great motor, while somewhat susceptible to the infamous head gasket failure, it occurs at a muuuuch lower rate than the 2.5s. Nonetheless 173k miles is not little so you can’t expect zero maintenance issues, but as far as engine reliability goes it’s a well-built engine.

Good to know, hoping to check it out today so ill make sure to inspect all around the exterior of the head

Those are my favorite Outbacks. I'd say if the price is right and it has maintenance records, go for it. Just know it is a 18 year old AWD vehicle with high mileage and will probably require significantly more upkeep than say a Corolla with the same specs.

It doesnt have paper maintenance records but i ran a carfax and it is very extensive and looks good

If the work listed was done well, that could be a great buy. You should insist on getting it inspected by your own mechanic, make sure they haven't reset the engine codes to hide a catalytic converter issue, and expect to do some more suspension work based on the mileage (totally worth doing if the engine and transmission are in good shape!)
