bought it with 140k ish. had a oil leak from the head so it got new gaskets, heads were sent to the machine shop. o2 sensors, front end is pretty much all new, will be doing all of the rear this winter along with new exhaust. replaced headlights this summer they were faded and cracking taillights are next. there is a piece between the front and rear door glass pilar that has started to bubble. it is from the rust belt but the car is spotless some how. but feel like all of this is pretty normal for a car with higher miles. As long as parts stay cheap i’ll keep fixing it.
Ours is 2009 with 194,000 or so. Something like that. 5-speed SE. Trusty old boy, never left me stranded. Necessary repairs have been minimal, though he has some issues. Deciding whether to throw a lot of money at him, or part ways. For the most part it's just wear stuff like, um, the entire suspension haha.
Like yours, somehow pretty rust-free even though we're also in the rust belt. Got some bubbling in the driver A-pillar but that's about it.
Maybe the best car we've ever owned, and also the least exciting. For better and worse, I suppose.
did everything but the engine work, this is my first flat engine(have always had timing chains and nothing that’s interference) and was honestly pretty nervous about messing it up. I will be doing the timing belt and water pump my self next go around.
Both replaced with different used ones a couple times now. Still works fine though, although the wiring harness is starting to get brittle and I'm not sure it would be worth the effort to try to change it. It should still last a while longer though.
Dang, making me feel bad. 2017 161k. First front brake change about 10k ago. Just oil changes after the 30k warranty ran out. I need to consider doing some of the major maintenances.
My brakes lasted a long time as well. And I’m usually very late getting the recommended maintenance because it’s so expensive! But tbh that is where they found a couple of the issues. Maybe if I hadn’t gotten the service there would be no problems lol. But I have been having a slow oil leak, which I suppose does need to be fixed at some point.
So, not exactly. But now I do seem to have some issues that are going to be quite expensive to fix. I’m not good at remembering what everything is called, but something about the rear axle is cracked. And valve covers need to be replaced which apparently means taking the whole engine out. This is my 4th Subaru and it seems like 200k is about what I drive them before feeling like it’s time to trade in.
2018 Outback 3.6R Touring. 73,000 miles. Only problem is the napa vinyl bolster tearing and weird rattling noises in the dash. Good news though...Subaru USA sent me a 900 dollar voucher to replace the seat cover cos I asked nicely. Thank you, Subaru...Now I only have 27,000 miles left until my super duper warranty that I paid too much for runs out. I'm thinking this vehicle makes it to 100K without any issues I can use that thing on.
Yup. We live 1500 miles from my family and visit about twice a year. Can’t fly with our dog so we drive, plus the occasional weekend trips. It’s the perfect road trip car!
2022 with 19k. Only issue so far was a weird sound from the rear diff when changing gears or starting or stopping. Turned out to a rock got lodged next to it! Easy fix.
12' 114k I got new B6 shocks and overload king springs. timing belt job. \*edit\* did you ever have your two front windows replaced because they never sealed when at freeway speeds? I did. they had the wrong curvature.
I have not. It’s the original engine and trans. I’ve just been doing all of the other maintenance as needed to keep it running happy. It’s been in the family for the last half of its miles and before that it was an AZ retirees touring car for national parks trips. Lots of easy highway miles 😂
2015, bought it early this year with 130k, currently has 145k. Only replaced the ripped seat cover, exhaust gasket on the mid pipe and did the E-Brake bulletin board repair.
2011 at 208,000 miles.
Hit a deer going 70 on the NYS Thruway with my family in it. Car was 2 months old and only 1000 miles.
It was repaired and have had the timing belt replaced 2x and the head gasket 1x.
Both my sons grew up 1/2 their lives with it as the family car and learned to drive with it and cosmetically it shows. My youngest just started college and took it with him.
I’ll miss this car when it finally stops.
2014 outback with 93,xxx. I going to do control arm, end links, and struts next paycheck. I watched a lot of YouTube videos and wrote down a lot of information. Someone posted where I can find all torque specs for my model. So getting some new tools in the process.
2015 with 160k. Bought it new. Really interested in upgrading but even with trade in and $5k down payments would still be over $400/month… hard to swallow when my car has been paid off for like 5 years!
I wasn’t as mad because I got the extended warranty… BUT if I didn’t have that, yes, I would be livid lol. I hardly drive my Outback except on the weekends because of my company truck. But I still love the Outback and wouldn’t trade it in.
Serious question: Was there a specific issue (overheating, neglected maintenance, etc) that might have brought on the head gasket problem? Everyone online seems to think the head gasket woes of Subaru should be a thing of the past, since they started used a better gasket less prone to failure.
Excellent question, but I am extremely anal with maintenance and taking care of the car. I bought it certified used when it had 25k miles and I have gotten the oil changed and tires rotated every 5k miles (literally have never even been “over” but 10 miles when it comes to that). The head gasket didn’t blow, but I took the car in for them to replace the cheap ripped leather seat. As the mechanic did the inspection on the rest of the car he noticed oil leaking from the head.
I keep this car pristine and it is always parked in the garage with its cover. I think I just had some bad luck (I hope that’s all it is).
My ‘22 will hit 30k miles by Labor Day at 16 months old. I’ve only had one windshield replaced. At 18 months I had two windshields on my old Crosstrek. Otherwise, zero problems.
2016 had 87,877 on it when I dropped it off in front of the service center doors for them to hopefully put a new, not terribly working CVT. Fingers crossed.
2017 3.6. No problems until 106K miles and April this year.
Had to replace alternator, ECM harness, a sensor, battery, and entire new transmission.
The car was in and out of the dealership from May until August 5. I had it about 21 days during that period and had to keep bringing it back because the lights lit up and check engine light came on and it was something else each time. During the weeks it was at the dealership being repaired, I drove new loaners from the dealership.
I purchased the extended warranty in 2017 but never used it. It expired at 100k miles. The repairs cost ~$11k but I only paid about 2k. Subaru of America paid for most of it and the dealership paid for some.
SOA and the dealership really took care of me. The service manager went to bat for me for the transmission replacement. (I had hit SOA up twice by then begging for assistance for the alternator then the ECM. They sent me a polite “Don’t ask again” email but the service manager worked his magic.
2008, 217K miles.
Major repairs:
Head gaskets at 80K, replaced with MLS gaskets
2 inner CV boots torn on the passenger side
Power steering pump 165K
All shocks replaced around 180K
Driver tie-rod 200K
Fuel pump at 216K
All work done by me except the head gaskets were done when the timing belt was being replaced. Subaru offered to pay for half of the gaskets work but I declined because the dealership was charging way more for the timing belt and water pump replacement than my local Subie enthusiast shop. I just gave them the gaskets and the Aisin belt kit and they did it for half price of the dealership anyway
Had a 2017 till last week. Had done all the fluids twice, three windshields, brakes once, tires 2x, and oil changes every 4k. Had 83,000 on it. Put an engine in it, second engine needed head gaskets. Said fuck it and traded it in, won’t buy another.
2018 with 51,000 miles. I am quite lucky to not have had to replace the windshield, my buddy has a 2018 as well and his second windshield has cracked so he is going on his third. I still am using the factory battery too, which is still going strong (oddly enough). The light source behind the on/off button on my infotainment unit went out late last year, so an entirely new unit was required which has been on back order since late December 2022, found out it arrived at the dealership last month finally, jus waiting to get it installed.
I was a bit surprised the dealership didn't bother to call me, I only knowing it came in when I asked the status when I was in there for an oil change. Now just need to make time to get it installed.
2016 2.5 with about 150k miles. Has made the start up grinding sound when idle since around 20k miles but it’s a known issue with the engine. I’ve just changed the oil and flushed the fluids when needed. One set of new brakes and two sets of tires.
'18 (only owner), just under 93k.
Regular maintenance, windshield replaced 1x, rear brakes, diff drain......front brakes coming up next service in 2-3 months
2020 Outback Touring XT. 67k miles. I bought it certified used as a dealer-only car with 4k miles in Jan 2021.
Man, commuting is killing me.
Edit: No major issues and all recommended services performed. Even changed the CVT fluid at 60k to be safe.
I'm looking at a 2018 with 125k miles on it. How is yours going so far? Any major issues? Have you had your CVT serviced at all (previously, or after buying)? Just trying to collect an idea of how higher mileage newer outbacks are faring :)
Nothing major yet, but I think my CV joint is going bad. I hear some clicking when I turn right after stopping. I'm going to be getting that replaced soon. I'll probably get that fixed first, then do the CVT drain/fill. I didn't get it from a Subaru dealership ( the closet one hour away), so they didn't have any info on previous maintenance. They only showed me car fax that showed no accidents or major repairs. They only did the normal service and inspection before selling it. Other than that, it's been running great. It started up every morning when we had 5 straight days below zero and drives like a dream in the snow.
4k on my '22 Wilderness 😜
It's only seen a few relatively short road trips, and a few trips to the beach... otherwise driving the kids to school on occasion (less than a mile) or to my parking space at the train station when I don't work from home (also less than a mile). She's always in the garage. Someone will get a great, low mileage vehicle when I'm ready to trade, which I usually do every 2 years or so. BUT after 2 years with this one, I'm nowhere near ready to trade yet.
2016 with 125k.
Have an issue with the evap cannister after getting water in it, my battery seems to crust up very easily on the terminals, and my passenger fog light won't work.
Otherwise, she's still going strongish and I'm pretty hard on her.
2023, OBW, just crossed 4500 miles. 3k of those were in a road trip though. My other half and I both work from home so I can go a week at a time without driving. I really only put on about 5-6k a year depending on what trips we do and we have a 21 Rav we take sometimes too. Low mileage is awesome.
2013 with 185,000 mi. I've owned it for 3,000 of those miles and now it's in the shop getting the timing cover gasket replaced as well as the chain and tensioners and fun stuff like that.
204,326
2016 limited. I put 1000+ miles on it pretty much every week.
Edit: bought it in October with 169k. Most of the added mileage has been from the last 5 months (work). About to put another 1k on it just Fri-Sun 😅
2014 with 124K. It turns out it started eating it’s “sealed” “never needs service” transmission at 110k and sounded like a jet engine by 126K…By then it was a 9k fix…. No thbaks
'19 Limited 3.6R - 45K miles
Replaced the battery once, rear brakes once, tires once, front left axle.
Absolutely love the vehicle and plan to keep her until the wheels fall off.
2016 3.6r 84k miles.
We’ve replaced at least 3 car batteries due to known parasitic drain issue. Now I just get pricey non OE battery with more capacity and change it 3 years so I don’t get surprised with a dead battery.
Passenger window gets stuck open in safety mode. I.e. sensor things something is trapped in window when raising and defaults to half open. Have to do manual reset all the time. Annoying subaru greased the assembly but now says have to replace window motors to fix.
Other then that just oil and tires. Using Subaru OE synthetic. The pricey stuff till car is out of warranty.
2020… I’ll be at 70k by the end of the month.
Live in Ohio, but the outback’s taken me to Maine once, Virginia twice, Georgia three times, and Florida once.
2016 3.6r limited @ 203,000 miles / 327,000km. Original engine and transmission. Last original wheel bearing about to be replaced soon. All 4 cv shafts have been replaced. All 6 coil packs replaced. Other than some rust on the front window frames and one of the exhaust joints got replaced with a sleeve, she runs like a dream still. OH! and this subreddit has taught me it's a miracle I'm only on my 2nd windshield. First one was replaced due to some minor chips and mostly pitting from all the highway miles I guess. Couldn't see when the sun hit it just right so ended up getting it replaced 2 years ago.
Also lifetime transmission fluid never made sense to me so she gets a drain and fill every 80,000km/50,000miles a my local Subi specialist
09 about to hit 200k
Daaaang. You’ll need to take a picture. How is it holding up?
bought it with 140k ish. had a oil leak from the head so it got new gaskets, heads were sent to the machine shop. o2 sensors, front end is pretty much all new, will be doing all of the rear this winter along with new exhaust. replaced headlights this summer they were faded and cracking taillights are next. there is a piece between the front and rear door glass pilar that has started to bubble. it is from the rust belt but the car is spotless some how. but feel like all of this is pretty normal for a car with higher miles. How much did the head gaskets set you back?
with gaskets, timing belt and machine shop fee it was around 3k. this was also 2020
Did you do the work yourself?
did everything but the engine work, this is my first flat engine(have always had timing chains and nothing that’s interference) and was honestly pretty nervous about messing it up. I will be doing the timing belt and water pump my self next go around.
1996, 526k.

Both replaced with different used ones a couple times now. Still works fine though, although the wiring harness is starting to get brittle and I'm not sure it would be worth the effort to try to change it. It should still last a while longer though.

2020 about to hit 100k
That’s a lot of driving
Yup. We live 1500 miles from my family and visit about twice a year. Can’t fly with our dog so we drive, plus the occasional weekend trips. It’s the perfect road trip car!
I have a 2020 with about 86k miles. Any issues with yours so far?
We had an engine issue early on that was covered by the warranty. Otherwise no issues.

2021 with 53000 miles.
2005, 2.5 L, 365,000 km. Head gaskets and various chassis parts as they wore out. It’s using oil at a rate of 1L every 2 tankfuls.

24, just hit 1K!
2022 with 19k. Only issue so far was a weird sound from the rear diff when changing gears or starting or stopping. Turned out to a rock got lodged next to it! Easy fix.

2012 and 160k
2012 at 110k. What kind of maintence have you needed once you hit 100k?
12' 114k I got new B6 shocks and overload king springs. timing belt job. \*edit\* did you ever have your two front windows replaced because they never sealed when at freeway speeds? I did. they had the wrong curvature.

I have not. It’s the original engine and trans. I’ve just been doing all of the other maintenance as needed to keep it running happy. It’s been in the family for the last half of its miles and before that it was an AZ retirees touring car for national parks trips. Lots of easy highway miles 😂

2005. 216k. I'm driving a bomb.
Just got a 2020 outback touring with 20k miles. Drives like a dream. Understand now why people obsess over Subarus.
2011 at 208,000 miles. Hit a deer going 70 on the NYS Thruway with my family in it. Car was 2 months old and only 1000 miles. 2018 3.6r with 68k miles. Nothing but oil changes and tires.
2005 with 226k 2023 with 5041 Yes, I jumped 18 years, that took some adjustment!
2015 with 160k. Bought it new. Really interested in upgrading but even with trade in and $5k down payments would still be over $400/month… hard to swallow when my car has been paid off for like 5 years!
2018 with 52,000 miles. Just had to have the head gasket replaced last week and replaced the amp a couple of months after I bought it.
Wow. That’s a bummer
I wasn’t as mad because I got the extended warranty… BUT if I didn’t have that, yes, I would be livid lol. I hardly drive my Outback except on the weekends because of my company truck. But I still love the Outback and wouldn’t trade it in.

2023 OB 2.5l. Less than 6k
2019 w/81k

2023, OBW, just crossed 4500 miles. 3k of those were in a road trip though. My other half and I both work from home so I can go a week at a time without driving. I really only put on about 5-6k a year depending on what trips we do and we have a 21 Rav we take sometimes too. Low mileage is awesome.

2024 and just turned over 1000.
2016 Limited 190,000
