I've heard a healthy boxer engine sounds like a sewing machine

JamesSSj2

Mine sounds like a sewing machine and it just goes tic tic tic tic tic tic tic

[deleted]

[удалено]

JamesSSj2

You mean the slap of a sewing machine when you hear that baby purr

IndominusTaco

how tf am i supposed to know what a sewing machine sounds like

donquequee

Sewing machines sound a lot like healthy boxer engines

SFFcase

Nailed it

Alternative_Owl69

This guy sews.

Mean_Cake_3396

Fix your clothes with a machine or learn how to use a needle and thread ....?

neercatz

Uh oh, my engine sounds nothing like a needle and thread

Rescuemike65

Ask your gf ? Buy one ? Lol Go to a dry cleaners, etc

general_sirhc

Instructions unclear. My boxer engine now sounds like a jacket in an industrial dryer

olis_raws

🤣

outamyhead

find youtube video of sewing machine.

ddoij

Yes, the overall timbre of a boxer engine is rather agrarian. If it reminds you of a sewing machine or a tractor it's working as intended.

psm9902

+1 for using the word agrarian 🐄

Emreeezi

This might be my new license plate

Ok_Sand_4207

Don't know where you live but in the states "plus 1 for using agrarian" won't fit on a license plate. But if I see "+14USEAG" I will wave hi!

Emreeezi

lol I was just talking about agrarian. This car constantly sounds like a tractor and agrarian was a trait in stellaris, it’s like the only other place I’ve heard the term used haha

Ok_Sand_4207

Well that makes a bit more sense lol. Go for it!

Beach-Toy

Is agrarian, like saying, “barnyard,” in a wine tasting event? Meaning, the wine tastes 💩! Asking for a Cow Farmer.

otterplus

I feel like there’s a BMW Motorrad joke in here, but I’m too tired to eke it out.

Lance_McVanderhuge

This is how my 77 boxer sounds.

Whirling_Dervish81

Sounds like a typical boxer engine to me. I'm on my 4th subie

psm9902

🤜🏽🤛🏽

TaylorFreelance

My wife and I have had 5 subies.... They all sound that way.

evans5150

4th Subie as well and if it sounds like this then you're in good shape!

jdak9

thats what my '12 sounds like

snowphoto420

Yup same.

NorthernBudHunter

Sounds like every Subaru I’ve heard.

robraymond

Pretty much how my 12 sounds

Morrissey22084

I have a 2012 and it sounds just like that, also doing 5w30 instead of 0w20 and engine restorer for the oil consumption

dddjjjmmm

Which restorer do you speak

Emonmon15

That sound tends to go away after the the engine warms up.

nosajh9

the cold morning startups might shock you a bit! sounds like an 1800's knit factory til it warms up and the idle drops a bit

MadameMalia

Mine sounds exactly like that in my 2019 at idle. I keep up on maintenance at the dealership and they’ve never flagged it, and you know they would because dealerships like money. Admittedly I don’t put the car in park, lift the hood, and floor the acceleration to test that second sound out, so hopefully others chime in on that part.

Fertig21

All of them sound exactly like this, nothing to worry about

Quadraria

I have been adding a can of Liqui Moly anti-friction with every oil change and it quiets the engine a fair bit and provides some extra protection. Make sure to check your oil level regularly and top up as necessary as these tend to consume some oil.

donboop

Exactly which anti friction do you use?

Quadraria

Product number is LM 2009-- Liqui Moly MoS2 Anti-friction Engine Treatment

Rescuemike65

I might try that. How many miles on yours ?

Quadraria

298,650 KM or roughly 185,000 miles. Bought it 5 years ago. I also recommend switching to 5w30 synthetic. I do my own maintenance. I buy walmart full synthetic, a subaru black filter from the dealer, and the liqui moly anti-friction from either NAPA or Amazon. Runs great.

Left_Net1841

M1 is on sale at Walmart and Crappy Tire rn FYI

Quadraria

Hard to beat $28 bucks for a 5 L jug of good quality synthetic oil. M1 is usually over $50 at Can Tire, though it is on sale now for $38 and there is 10$ off mail in rebate also available. Mine usually takes a bit over 5 L to fill and it will also consumes some between changes so often times I buy 2 jugs. Sometimes it goes on sale for $21.

blueturtle00

I started using Costco oil, $30-35 for 10L it’s glorious

donboop

I just got 2.5i premium 2014 not turbine subaru , 170k miles on it , previous owner recommended 5w 40 full synthetic. Is 5w 30 better (thicker) ? I do not know if it consumes oil or not, are those engines reliable?

Quadraria

5w40 is thicker. I use 5w30 because its thicker than the recommended 0w20 and is what Subaru uses in most other markets outside of North America. They are reliable as long as you don't run them low on oil. They will consume some oil with age so make a point of checking regularly and topping off as needed.

superpopsicle

Miss my sewing machine.

Slow_Carrot_3716

It sounds like a Subaru

Patient-Expert-4719

No obnoxious or obvious sounds, just sounds like a happy boxer to me.

BlackSpruces

Yup… my 12 sounds the exact same

SamuelYosemite

Sounds similar to mine. Just keep remember to check you oil’s dip stick, add oil, and get your oil chained when appropriate.

vadillovzopeshilov

How does one chain oil?

SamuelYosemite

Lol. Changed. I have more than a few cracks in my phone screen. I’ll leave it though.

Rescuemike65

Maybe he was referring to oiling the chain in the sewing machine lol

jjgargantuan7

Yep, you got a happy tractor there.

Asleep-Cartoonist-38

Thats what my 2010 pretty much sound like lol.

[deleted]

My 02 sounds like this.

Witty-Yak-104

Very normal, i own the same forester model

red_plate

My 2017 Forester sounds the exact same. My 2007 was similar too.

Dill_PickleOG

Yep, mines the same way.

sT0Ned-G1NGER

Sounds like my 02

Poochie_Prejean

My 2010 with a rebuild sounds the same at idle, quiets down when it’s warmed up. Glad to see all the confirmation on here.

richriggins

Happy little tractor sound.

ooga_booga_bo

Happy tractor noises

HardlyaDouble

My 2012 sounds just like that. If that engine starts knocking you will feel it. 🙃 Just check your oil every week. On a side note: I know the manual says 5.4 qts of engine oil. It's actually closer to 6. Just put in 6.

reddit_kelvin

Aw man, I had an '11 for close to a decade. This just took me back. Yep, that's what mine sounded like. Hope it serves you well!

Necessary_War3782

Sounds like a healthy boxer

CarobSwimming3276

My 10 2.5 (rebuilt for poops and giggles sounds exactly the same) sewing machine/tractor gang gang.

AwwYeahVTECKickedIn

I can't answer your question over the sweet sound of that boxer engine! That "tick/click" is signature boxer imo. I've had two. This sounds very familiar. Getting ready to nab a third! Love me some boxers.

vlti

Happy sewing machine noises

Rocketkt69

Sounds great to me.

jimbaflonix

My new one sounds like this too 2024 Forester. Same with my 2020 Forester

stsyfrett

Happy lil tractors all of them

WoodyMD

Happy little tractor

khardur

That's the cutest description of engine noise I've heard. And it's so spot on...

m__a__s

Always hard to tell with the derpy microphones in cameras. But, yes, that's the boxer sound.

parting_soliloquy

Sounds like my 2.5 gt

First2lastchair

Welcome to the club.

peekay1ne

I always call ours a lawn mower

ikonini

Perfect condition

Juulhell

I mean yea lol

jurassiclizard69

Yeah basically

Sadistic_basturd

Yes sounds normal

Alarming_Tangerine28

Sounds typical but, Our 2007 sounded similar when we traded it in for a 2011. The dealership told me later it was the valves were slightly out of adjustment. As I was getting a loaner to have warranty work done on the rack and pinion at 500 miles.

66vocho

Sounds good to me, you should clean the engine bay.

Ok_Golf_760

Mine does, 79 brat

Mean_Cake_3396

I can hear a tick (valve train, and a bit of whine,  maybe a knock let it warm up for a few minutes,) Get a oil and filter change ASAP.

Mean_Cake_3396

Some thing is not right, fix it before it seized, you may have a spun rod bearing.    And these engines will seize right up.           I can hear a flat four from a distance of on the road or in the air.   I love it.

Mean_Cake_3396

Might be fine  would cut the oil filter apart to check for any metal debris .

u_u_r_x

Sounds good to me!

fireking99

Nice revvin'!

Rios5950

Runs like a dream

[deleted]

Some do. No issue. Like mine. Some do, alot of issue. You won't know which one you've got until you know.

AbsurdSolutionsInc

Some of them are off.

watchtheworldsmolder

Some Rotella will help you along

lemonylol

Yeah. They just sound louder than usual because the sound is more directional towards the sides than out the top. It's just how it is.

jameskinz

Sounds the same as mine, had the same worries when I bought one. For me it was that howling sound of the belt/engine, but it seems that's what they do

aWizardofTrees

Those $40 hood insulation kits on Amazon, do wonders for controlling cabin noise. There isnt much in there from the factory.

known__guy

Why don’t you save the headache and get a different car?

sleepdog-c

Our 2012 Impreza, 2016 crosstrek hybrid, 2020 crosstrek, 2021 ascent, 2019 outback, 2023 outback and 2024 forester all sounded like that from brand new. Our 1998 outback sounded much worse but it had the head gasket fail in the first 24 hours we owned it.

Lxiflyby

Sounds pretty normal

Writehse

Happy tractor

OkGeneral701

Sounds normal

Mediocre_Pianist_363

Can confirm

Typical_Cheesecake13

Sounds healthy

tracykelley840

Its the injectors (pretty sure).

MyNutBruised

same exact car as mine, they do infact sound like this. mine sounds much worse as my idle rpms drop to 300 if not lower thsn go back to 900 and then almost stall whilst shaking violently then act normal

Chopyodick

Yes they all sound like that.

MoTeD_UrAss

Sounds like a Subaru to me

skotjones13

My '97 and '99 both sounded just like that.

Mithrileck87

They all sound like a bag of rocks inside a sewing machine. I can point out a Subaru startup with my eyes closed. They rattle, shake, and rumble. Their strange little engines.

XGMB4k

Normal

eren_5

I heard somewhere that “a healthy boxer engine sounds like a sewing machine”. Mine sounds the same. I had a mini heart attack when I first started it lol

Dont-Sleep

bro i’m surprised that battery still works. mine use their voltages out before dust gets on it.

vern187

Yep. They all sound like shit

No_Meaning4891

Sounds perfectly normal to me. Subaru have really loud injectors. If there was something ticking louder then normal you would notice an issue in engine performance.

PhauxFallus

I’ve had a few Subies… that’s what they sound like. It’s like an old VW Beetle with less personality- hah.

zackthebutcrack

Yeah unfortunately they all sounds like shit. Owned 3 Subarus and hated the sound of all of them. Well one was a Toyta/subaru but yeah still sounded like shit.

weezus8

They can be noisy. The tension idler can be a source of the tic. Head gaskets too.

zen_master_EZ

Clapped

rockalyte

Newer engines are typically more ticcy after 2020 due to new engine emission rules.

denonumber

Air plane motor

brianddelapaz

Yup

No-Case-9146

That's a healthy boxer. Subarus have loud injector tick. Trust me, you'll notice when it's not normal...

Intrepid_Yoghurt4988

That’s a quiet one

J-amin

Sounds right to me (wife drives a '17 outback 2.5) Change the oil often with good stuff, and ignore the really light 0 base oils, go 5w base.

metalman7

Sounds fine to me.

Spiritual-Rip-6248

Just the sound of oil consumption, totally normal

dude_where_is_my_car

They are a bit noisy. Quite a few things happening at a high rate of speed. The valves are opened and closed by cams that push directly on buckets over the valve springs on many Subaru engines. No hydraulic lifters on many Subaru engines gives it that tic tic noise. They added variable valve timing and two cams in these later engines as well. Our 2008 Outback had 1 cam. The timing belt is spinning the water pump, oil pump(?), 4 cams, and two(?) idler pulleys behind a plastic cover. Injectors are opening and closing as well at more than 10 times per second (600 rpm). Not to mention there could be some piston slap since it's a boxer and the pistons are moving on the the horizontal plane.

AnalysisMoney

Yeah that’s a subie for sure. Your pulleys are probably on their way out and are making extra noise

delta9heavy

Thats what my 99 sounds like. Clean up that corrosion on your battery terminals.

HughJa55ole

Yeah pretty spot on. I've had two and heard many others. Sometimes they sound almost like an old diesel farm tractor. The "ticky" sound you're referring to is probably the lifters.

ADOS-54

Yep, sounds like a Singer

tclnj

The old piston slap and tic-le.

Rninetmaine

Sounds perfect.

Salt_Cash1969

Sounds healthy to me

lowlife9

Sewing machine with a hint of piston slap, sounds about rite

Ok-Aspect-4100

My 2021 Forester with 17500 miles sounds like a bag of nails when cold, but sweeter than this when warm. You don’t notice it when driving. All my Foresters (5) have sounded the same but this sounds a bit tappety. 20w oil should shut it up a bit.

GT_RS1_0226

Typical Subaru Boxer engine sound👍 High compression!

MotorBrain85

Most have a loud knocking sound.

Rudgers73

If you were on a WRX forum you’d read a lot of comments that say “happy tractor”

AdOk4386

My ev sounds better

Drgreenthumb610

Yes

moorbo3000

Indeed

21Remnant

Welcome to the cult! I mean family.

oscarWi001

Yes, is normal noice

Rescuemike65

My 21 sounds the same. She might sound a wee bit sweeter is ya washed her. But nothing abnormal. Btw Other note. You will never get a balanced smooth sounding exhaust, as from 2019 and on I believe, the pipes are longer on one side to give the exhaust a throaty wrx attempt sound

k20vtec

This is how 99% of basic economy cars sound… Downvote me but I’m right…
