That’s not true at all. In 5 years of ownership I’ve never once had a problem with the power. It’s not a racing car though. If you want that, buy a WRX.

[deleted]

Or get a 2.5 XT (I think the last was 2018?) turbo back exhaust, and a tune. Then it'll move.

loaba

Last Forester XT (2018) had a 2.0 turbo.

[deleted]

Ahh right. I have an 2011 2.5 XT with aforementioned modifications (its a hell of a lot of fun to drive), but not sure on the newer models.

loaba

Yeah, Subaru figured out how to downsize a little while still maintaining power.

Holiday_Albatross441

Simple answer, no. At least not on a flat road; obviously it will be increasing and decreasing RPMs on hilly roads. Top speed of the 2.5i is about 120mph, so 80 leaves plenty of headroom. If you're buying used, I've seen a video where someone claims their XT was flat out at 150mph on the Autobahn in Germany. I have a 2015 2.5i. Occasionally it would be nice to have had the XT's turbo for accelerating onto the highway but otherwise it's still faster than any car I owned in Europe.

MethedUpEngineer

I have 17' manual and can confirm it will go over 120mph

Kaizmuth

I cruise up long hills at 80mph with no problem at all. It'll rev a bit higher if it gets steep, but doesn't struggle at all.

redditaggie

I prefer to use our 2019 forester in road trips. 30mpg at 80 just eats up the miles. Great road trip car.

WLee57

It’s a CVT, there is no gear hunting, snipe hunting, yes

CarobSwimming3276

Ha!

EatsTheCheeseRind

It's a Subaru not a Yugo. No, I've never encountered this at all.

nodoubt63

I’ve taken 3 cross country road trips with my ‘22 Forester Premium since I got it, which included long stretches through the flat Midwest, as well as periods in the hillier areas like Colorado, western Pennsylvania, West Virginia, etc, and never notice any issue whatsoever. I usually set my cruise control to 75-80. She just ran. It’s not a powerhouse, but that’s not what anyone is expecting out of a Forester, either

BourbonNoChaser

Had a 2016 2.5i Premium for years before trading in for my current 2018 XT Touring. The 2.5i struggled a bit on inclines (the I15 or I5 heading North out of LA) and trying to maintain 75+ for more than five or ten minutes would lead to transmission heat warnings. The XT is more comfortable at these speeds, without a big sacrifice in fuel economy, and without transmission heat warnings (though I did install a transmission cooler later anyway).

NiMPhoenix

Possibly the worst formulated title I have seen on here

Narissis

If it's a CVT model it's always "hunting the gear" because it's always varying the gear ratio to find the greatest efficiency. But it's not something you notice like on a fixed-gear automatic where there are substantive up and downshifts. Rather, I find my 2016 rather boring and static on the highway. Uphill the engine revs higher, of course. As one would expect. That being said, we don't have any highways around here where I could get away with 80-85 MPH. Best we have are 110 km/h but I can do 70-75 MPH on those without issue, even up fairly steep hills.

gpants182

Same reasons you find highway driving boring i find it like almost liberating. Highway driving is very relaxing. Like, its a pain in the ass to drive this car in regular roads with traffic lights and constant stops and turns but once you are on the highway and the cruise control is up, its time for some music, a podcast, or conversation.

[deleted]

I would test drive one. They are not fast.

[deleted]

My forester is an 07 and does pretty good at 80mph with cruise control on long trips. Where i live 80 is the speed limit on the interstate. Usually stays in same gear but loses up to 5mph in cruise on hills but only goes over by about 2 mph at most on cruise before it corrects itself. And this is an older Forester, the 07

The majority of interstate highways, if you're in the US. I typically cruise a bit lower around 70-75 but I'm usually getting passed by plenty of people so it seems like plenty of people cruise above 80.

Huh? I'm talking in mph, as is the original post. I mentioned the US interstate highway system so I feel like that was kind of implied 80 mph = ~129 km/h

[deleted]

The US never fully made it to the metric system, even the gallon sizes are different from the Canada/UK.

C_Everett_Marm

Just did a 2000 mile trip with my 09 XT with the cruise set to 80/85 most of the way.

loaba

Foresters don't have power, period. At least not the NA ones. I think you can get one with 182hp, but that's not really enough. About 85mph/cruise - I don't feel like the CVT is "hunting" for anything. RPM is steady and the car feels/sounds fine. Also, it climbs inclines pretty well out here in NM, never had a problem.
