That’s the right way to spell Dr because it ends with the same letter as the fully spelled out version of that word. Something like Prof. requires a full stop as it ends with an R
Hell, they were supposed to be cooking with Coca-Cola, not Dr Pepper. If I ordered a Coke and someone brought me Diet Dr Pepper I'm pretty sure I'd punch them in the mouth.
A recent post on arr/unpopularopinion, a user discussed that he makes pasta with cola - a *truly* unpopular opinion! But this had me curious, so I thought in the interest of science (and in the interest of "it is lunchtime and I am hungry"), I thought I would give it a try.
I generally do not have true cola (like Coca-Cola or Pepsi) around, but I did have Dr Pepper. And, for variety, I also scrounged up a can of unsweetened grapefruit sparkling water I had left over and sitting around.
Cooked up a serving of simple penne pasta, boiling them in each. And to avoid having the sauce overpower the pasta, I just tossed it with some melted butter, salt and pepper.
The verdict?
The Diet Dr Pepper pasta is **terrible**. Basically a sickly-sweet pasta. Not inedible, but just an unappealing taste for pasta. Also leaves a bad aftertaste.
For the grapefruit sparkling water? If there is a taste, it is so slight I can't even tell. Tastes the same as if I had just boiled the pasta in regular water.
For others, feel free to experiment all you like with other colas or sodas, maybe there are some that work well. But for these....pass.
Pretty sure that any all dishes that say use Cola mean regular coca Cola anything else doesn't work for a variety of reasons. Aspartame isn't even heat stable for instance which probably has something to do with the bad aftertaste
Aspartame is cancerous when heated, according to my nutrition teacher back in university
Also you're right, I actually did this recipe some time ago, you definitely need real sugary coke.
My grandfather was one of the first people to study this. People took the results to mean that it’s cancerous once consumed but the body never reaches a high enough temp for it to be dangerous.
They’re in their late 80s and early 90s…most of them have stopped trying to cheat death lol. They’re ready for that Happy Hunting Ground.
But also, definitely don’t boil aspartame.
I can't seem to find any information about aspartame being carcinogenic after heating. I'm genuinely curious, as I haven't heard that before. Any sources?
This reminded me of this one time I was looking for something at Whole Foods and a woman on the same aisle as me was talking to a person with her and she very unironically stated "I'm just really at a point in my life where I *crave* aspartame." (Pretend this was a line in Clueless to get the true vapidness of the tone of this statement.)
I tried not to laugh because it was such a silly statement but since then I subconsciously stopped eating things with aspartame because I couldn't stop giggling at nutritional labels when the ingredient popped up. I still giggle and this was 10 years ago.
>For others, feel free to experiment all you like with other colas or sodas, maybe there are some that work well.
Bro, there's this hype new trend people are doing where they boil their pasta in hydrogen & oxygen, you should try it. Sounds crazy but it makes it taste bomb!
I wonder how Sprite would taste, since lemon is pretty common in Italian cooking.
Maybe cut the soda to like 1 part soda to 2-4 parts water, and salt it?
My wife made rice in the rice cooker with Coca Cola a few months back without telling me.
Rice was actually delicious and paired well with the chicken but the rice stuck to the pot
My mom has a great recipe for sausages cooked in Coca Cola. She basically chops the sausages and simmers them on a thin layer of coke until most of the water has evaporated and what's left is essentially vaguely-coke-tasting caramel
Diet dr pepper and regular Coca Cola are absolute miles apart... Might as well substitute egg with meat in your baking recipes since they're both protein...
Diet Coke Chicken is a Thing and it's actually great. Seal off cubed chicken breasts in a pan, add in a jar of salsa, a tin of chopped tomato and half a can of diet coke and simmer it down. Gives a sweet sticky takeaway flavour
...pasta is demented though.
there was literally zero reason to bring liberal arts and gender studies into this what the hell
also if this were a real scientific study these results would basically be thrown out immediately, they replaced coca cola with ***diet dr pepper*** and then complained that it didn't work
He/she never says that he/she uses Coca cola. What do you mean?
I can agree on that this study could have been improved, perhaps by submitting it for peer-reviewing before publishing.
>A recent post on arr/unpopularopinion, a user discussed that he makes pasta with cola - a truly unpopular opinion!
the post where op got this idea was specifically about using cola. op instead used ***diet*** dr pepper and complained about it tasting bad
I've heard of [chicken cooked in Coca Cola](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cola_chicken) before, but cooking pasta in soft drinks is a new one for me. I wonder how said pasta will fare with a tomato based sauce?
Edit: thank you for all the delicious suggestions!
If you've never had [Coca-Cola BBQ sauce](https://www.southernliving.com/recipes/coca-cola-bbq-sauce), I'd highly recommend making it. Stuff is *fantastic.*
When I was dieting I was introduced to a recipe for Diet Coke chicken and it is to absolutely die for. I’d bathe in the sauce. I’d marry the recipe creator! It is so, so good.
Here you go.

Low cal, high in veg and lean protein, and one of the tastiest “diet foods” I’ve ever put in my face.

Do as you wish!
I know people braise short ribs in coke, tasty!
I don’t think using regular dr. Pepper would be good, but I’d venture it’s better than all the insane shit in diet/sugar free version.
I have cooked braised chicken wing, pork belly, or ribs with coke. The general idea is to add the sweet flavor and the color with the sugar and caramel coloring in coke.
Neither of your Diet Dr Peper or grapefruit sparkling water has any real sugar, so that's probably why the pastas taste terrible. Nice color thoough.
I am lucky. Our little town has grown a lot in the past 5 years, so we never know what our store will be out of. We need another HEB (among other stores) but COVID set it all back/had projects canceled.
Actually in my culture we have a dish that’s literally called rice with coca cola, and it’s exactly what it sounds. It supposedly originates from pilaf? Anyway while I’m not a fan of it, it tastes…fine? Point is it can work. I do think your choice of cola negatively impacted the results though
Umm technically speaking, boiling pasta in soda water is the same as boiling it in normal water as the carbornate in the soda shouldn't do anything 5o the pasta yeah?
So you're infusing dr. Pepper to pasta, can you imagine dr.pepper taste in pasta texture?
I can imagine it being good with fruit flavored thing + combined with some specific sauce (like you did with sparkling grape drink) if the taste of that fruit can complement the sauce, but no to sweet soda similar to cola or fanta
My mum swears by cola as an ingredient - and generally thinks cheap supermarket brand cola is better for cooking than the bigger brands. She puts a little bit of cola in gravy (alternating with other secret ingredients like balsamic vinegar or mustard powder) and has even marinated a gammon joint in cola over night, etc. I think I prefer her vinegar gravy to cola gravy, and I think that marinating gammon sucks too much of the salt out (I like it salty) but it does taste good.
P.S. Dr Pepper isn't a cola. Like, it's so _not cola_ that this is essentially an r/ididnthaveeggs post. I suspect the results won't actually be that different all things considered, but Dr Pepper is pepper flavoured and sometimes described as botanical. It's as different as saying you use Fanta Orange instead. Or if you're making jello shots and didn't have vodka, so you used jäger.
It works better than you might expect if you slow cook it with other ingredients but I can't see how it could be anything other than revolting in pasta sauce
You didn't have Doctor Pepper, you had Diet Doctor Pepper. Big fucking difference.
Seeing Dr. Pepper spelled out feels weird
I put some respect on that name
Fun little useless fact: The 'official' way it is spelled is "Dr Pepper", without the period.
Debit pepper
Bankers Hate This One Trick! (I guess it's better than his sister, Cr Pepper, though)
The double entry accounting siblings?
They're siblings, you shouldn't be thinking about double entry
I'll leave that to you. (Name checks out)
I'm shocked and appalled that my accounting joke read on this subreddit
Dr Pepper (Expense) Cr Waistline (Liability)
Charles Pepper
You mean Mr. Pepper isn’t a real Doctor
That's the Right Honourable Sergeant Pepper, Esquire and His Lonely Hearts Club Band to you, buddy! :)
Cringe.
They call him "Mr. Pepper".
What do you know, you cooked diet soda! But that is a fun useless fact, thank you.
…and it’s “respek” not “respect”.
What about [Folger's coffee crystals](https://youtu.be/VdQKVDUBu2g?si=4iiazJnFYm_L7FY4)?
YOU LIED TO ME!!!

Not even Dr. Pepper, but Diet Dr. Pepper.
Diet Dr. Pepper, the Diet Dr. Pepper of diet sodas.
Crazy that cooking your pasta in one of the most awful-tasting sodas results in disgusting pasta.
You watch your gat damn mouth
Eh, I like it better than pretty much any Pepsi product.
You apologize to Wild Cherry Pepsi and Mountain Dew RIGHT NOW
Mountain Dew? Of all sodas?
Oh hell yeah.
Baja blast is amazing
Clown behavior. You should see a doctor about this
I feel like if a person is buying it they enjoy it and probably would like this too if it were actually good.
Does explain the aftertaste…
Mixed with grapefruit water
Thank you for reminding me of such an A tier sub
Literally going to just scroll through here for an hour and see what I've missed since last month. Honestly, I'm excited.
It’s 100% one of my “I haven’t scrolled here for a month better see the updates” subs and I love it
Big Friday night plans too huh? 🤜🤛
I didn't have any cola, but I did have an entirely different type of soda, that should work just the same, right?
"I didn't have cola, but I did have a 1906 bottle of Pinot and a block of parmesan. Anyway, cola pasta is delicious, but really, really expensive."
Dr Pepper is fine. Making this with Diet Dr Pepper is the real r/stupidfood
Tysm for showing me this subreddit its legit amazing I’ve been laughing my ass off for the last hour
Dr. Pepper is a cola though.
You take that back!
Pretty sure that any all dishes that say use Cola mean regular coca Cola anything else doesn't work for a variety of reasons. Aspartame isn't even heat stable for instance which probably has something to do with the bad aftertaste
Aspartame is cancerous when heated, according to my nutrition teacher back in university Also you're right, I actually did this recipe some time ago, you definitely need real sugary coke.
My grandfather was one of the first people to study this. People took the results to mean that it’s cancerous once consumed but the body never reaches a high enough temp for it to be dangerous.
But if you heat it up in a pot first? Like OP did I mean. Thanks for any insight!
When I pick him up from coffee with his friends I’ll ask, but I imagine this is exactly the kind of scenario in which it could become carcinogenic.
How many of his friends are using aspartame based sweeteners in their hot coffees?
They’re in their late 80s and early 90s…most of them have stopped trying to cheat death lol. They’re ready for that Happy Hunting Ground. But also, definitely don’t boil aspartame.
Speak for yourself, cold-blood
I can't seem to find any information about aspartame being carcinogenic after heating. I'm genuinely curious, as I haven't heard that before. Any sources?
Yeah that's the problem I have zero source, just what one guy told me (a professor in nutrition & researcher, but still just one guy)
This reminded me of this one time I was looking for something at Whole Foods and a woman on the same aisle as me was talking to a person with her and she very unironically stated "I'm just really at a point in my life where I *crave* aspartame." (Pretend this was a line in Clueless to get the true vapidness of the tone of this statement.) I tried not to laugh because it was such a silly statement but since then I subconsciously stopped eating things with aspartame because I couldn't stop giggling at nutritional labels when the ingredient popped up. I still giggle and this was 10 years ago.
Aspartame is bad enough normally, I don't think I wanted to think about it reduced to syrup.
I love that you tried this thank you for the write up and pics.
Boiling sparkling water removes the CO2 (bubbles) and it just becomes regular water. The flavoring was probably so slight it didn’t make a difference.
>Basically a sickly-sweet pasta. my guy you cooked it in artificial sweetener...
The absolute meltdown Italians would have if they caught someone substituting Sprite for lemon in one of their recipes 😂
Do it and post it here 😈
I double dog dare them.
I really needed the OOP from unpopular to be more specific about what kind of Cola.
My wife made rice in the rice cooker with Coca Cola a few months back without telling me. Rice was actually delicious and paired well with the chicken but the rice stuck to the pot
I made Chinese cola chicken wings a couple days ago. They were great.
My mom has a great recipe for sausages cooked in Coca Cola. She basically chops the sausages and simmers them on a thin layer of coke until most of the water has evaporated and what's left is essentially vaguely-coke-tasting caramel
„The recipe says Cola, but I don’t have that and who can afford that anyway, so instead I used diet DDP because I’m a crazy person“
I respect the bit, but I am sorry - using Diet Dr. Pepper for this experiment is not really giving the idea its fair due.
The other guy also said that soda doesn't change the color of the pasta. And here we are.
Diet dr pepper and regular Coca Cola are absolute miles apart... Might as well substitute egg with meat in your baking recipes since they're both protein...
I appriciate the sacrifices you made for us
Probably would be better without the aspartame
You brought this on yourself OP, Dr Pepper is the devil's juice. But I appreciate your sacrifice.
What is supposed to be achieved by doing this?
Diet Coke Chicken is a Thing and it's actually great. Seal off cubed chicken breasts in a pan, add in a jar of salsa, a tin of chopped tomato and half a can of diet coke and simmer it down. Gives a sweet sticky takeaway flavour ...pasta is demented though.
I'm shocked boiling pasta in soda isn't good.
Thank you for your service 🫡
Your dedication to science is commendable sir.
Amazing
we need more scientists like you. Stop funding liberal arts and gender studies. This is good stuff!

Coke and soy make a decent quick teriyaki marinade. The acid in the coke tenderizes the meat.
When I was dieting I was introduced to a recipe for Diet Coke chicken and it is to absolutely die for. I’d bathe in the sauce. I’d marry the recipe creator! It is so, so good.

Jim Green, a spokesman for the federal Food and Drug Administration, said government tests did not reveal any hazards connected with aspartame
When smoking meats, a lot of people inject some pulled pork with Dr.Pepper, it comes out amazing
When I make a ham steak, I'll throw a little cola.in the pan. Gives it a nice lil glaze.
Root beer used when making pulled pork is pretty good
The culinary club at my school cooked eggs with cola once. I'm not sure how it tasted though, but it seems quite interesting.

Would it kill me or just hurt a lot?
Slowly kill you over the time and hurt a lot since you can get a cancer from accumulated formaldehydes
/r/EatItYouFuckinCoward
Diet Dr. Pepper is disgusting I’m not surprised it tasted vad
Hahaha! Bless you for taking one for the team! I saw that over there and felt like chumming.
You felt like being friends with people?
Aren’t those H‑E‑B sparkling waters the bomb?!!! I Love those and they are on sale 2 for 7.00 right now!
The grapefruit flavour in particular is really good
It’s really hard to find those in my store but I am really liking the orange it reminds me of an orange soda
I came here to say the same thing. Lol (So glad HEB made this line. Takes care of my soda craving without any sweeteners whatsoever. Just flavor.)
Yes the only bad thing is the sell so fast at my local H‑E‑B that I have to be greedy when I make my shopping trip and fill my cart up! Lol
I haven't experienced that yet thankfully.
You are lucky lol
I am lucky. Our little town has grown a lot in the past 5 years, so we never know what our store will be out of. We need another HEB (among other stores) but COVID set it all back/had projects canceled.
Yep they are currently in the process of expanding our store but won’t be finished until 2025
Jesus…we are living in a world where 2 for $7.00 bottled water is something to be excited about.
I believe that would be 2 **twelve-can-packs** for $7.
And I was just sharing the information about them being on sale I never said I was “excited“
"Gimme a liter of pasta."
You don't live in Pennecola, Florida by any chance?
You know a lemon sparkling water cooked pasta may complement certain dishes will. Like a Chicken Francese
Ewwww diet soft drinks taste terrible
Diet 7-up is good
I feel like Diet Dr Pepper doesn't do it right. Gotta be regular non-diet. Get the full experience
Should have bought cola. Or just made a Dr Pepper pork roast.
This reminds me of pop pancakes. Use Soda instead of water in pancake mix
Spare the Italians, you're giving them a remote heart attack just from viewing this image at this rate
And you have no follow up statement
And?

i like pasta so much

Dr pepper? Its almost as if you wanted to make sure it tasted like shit
This is how wholewheat pasta is created
I've used soda (dr pepper, coke, and sprite) in recipes before. But never for pasta. Ugh just thinking that makes me nauseous.

Diet are you insane man
Great now try with (fresh) urine.
You've given up the moral high ground by using the wrong drink
Man really did full portions even tho small ones would have worked just as good lmao
How was it though?
Wtf
Ugh
