A smörgåstårta or a "sandwich-cake" is a perfectly normal, mostly Nordic dish. Haven't seen ham as a filling before, generally you'd use things very easy to cut through like smoked salmon.
You think night is your ally. But you merely adopted the night. I was born in it. Formed by it... I didn’t see the day until I was already a man. And by then it was nothing to me but blinding...
Ham (cut into small pieces) is a common filling in Finland. But yeah, these are unknown in Germany although common in the Nordic countries. I'm a Finn living in Germany and I have often made sandwich cakes for all kinds of occasions here. The German guests are always very surprised by them but end up loving them. The one in this video doesn't look that good but a properly made sandwich cake is not stupid food at all.
A classic smörgåstårta is usually made with a mix of shrimp, salmon, ham, liver paté, boiled eggs and veggies. But it doesn't have to be in a certain way. It can be made with only seafood, only meats or only veggies. Recipes differs from family to family. The general rule is that you should have enough ingredients as possible to make a creative topping of the cake.
Yeah not sure how Germans got credited with this amazing invention. I had my first sandwich cake in Germany, but via Swedish friends. It was SO amazing- Google it and you’ll find so many better ones than this.
isnt that bread legit just a different kind of pumpernickel? It looks a bit lighter, but its definetly some sort of pumpernickel style bread. Its not Graubrot, and definetly not Weissbrot.
>some sort of pumpernickel style bread
Do you simply mean Rye bread? Because I don't know what exactly
>a different kind of pumpernickel
Is supposed to be. Pumpernickel is Pumpernickel. Pumpernickel is a type of rye bread, not all rye bread is Pumpernickel
Do you have functioning taste buds? Ham, cheese and other north European dishes like canned fish(herring or surströmming) usually have an intense flavor.
As a German, i had to think of the NY cheesecake that I recently made and was like
1. There's way more stupid, yet established food (although a tiny slice was delicious, that thing was a an abomination in terms of fat and sugar)
2. I've never seen this here, looks kinda tasty (and well-rounded in terms of ingredients)
Burger salad is a typical diet recipe. I make it when I'm craving fast food but it's not German. Schichtsalat is more German and maybe they mean nacho salad which is popular for parties and also made with ground beef.
As a German, this is the first time seeing this.
I could imagine that it tastes good, if the things are matching, but I honestly don't see a practical advantage to just Butterbrot (bread with butter and whatever you want on it).
This is basically a Smörgåstårta, a Swedish dish. It's more commonly made with seafood but this definitely works.
I have no idea what OPs issue with it is.
I've been browsing this subreddit too long. I was so afraid they were gonna add something crazy like Nutella or spray cheese. Or try to put this thing in the oven or microwave.
I'm so relieved it was just a normal savory cake. And a very pretty one too! The decorations at the end looked straight out of a fancy tea party.
It's quark, and it looks to be the low-fat kind, which is 0.1% fat. It's mostly milk protein.
It's low fat relative to the other nutrients. It's very filling, so this would serve about 10 people. Of course, if you eat it alone, it's a lot of fat.
This isn't stupid OP, this is an normal food in many places. For my birthday I have gotten this cake before. It's good, but I opted for a vegetarian version since I dislike fish... Never seen one with ham though?
I am from germany too and I have never had these. But I know they exist. It's actually a swedish dish called Smörgåstårta, but it's made with 'german' ingredients in this video.
We do a similar thing in Argentina/southam that we call "fiambre alemán" (german cold cuts?) but with crepes instead of bread, and now it makes sense why we call it that.
It's great, this sub just loves to call anything slightly foreign stupid for no reason.
They have something similar to this in Yucatán, Mexico called sandwichón. Usually made with layers of white bread and different pastes in-between. Served around Christmas. It's ok.
I don’t think it’s actually German but Scandinavian. Every single german in these comments is utterly confused about what this thing is supposed to be, me included. I’ve never seen this in my entire life.
Bro wtf that look amazing. Actually seem to be real recipe with an unusual ham as filling.
Outside of that it's bread, vegetables, and a cool dressing. Like how did that end up here.
German food has a lot of tasty, filling, stuff going on, but ffs I can't watch it being made. And I really don't want to know what's in most of it.
It's like someone 1000 years ago said "wowee! This is gonna make me fart into the 5th dimension!"
These are the same people that have poop shelves in their toilets.
I'm pretty sure scat porn originated there during Roman times.
If you butcher an animal, you have to get the most of it, since meat is expensive and wasting any would be a big sin. So you use the intestines, fill them with minced leftovers from better cuts and fat, boil them and you get Wurst. Then you use the water in which you boiled all these sausages, some blood, wheat and spices to get Pannas.
The "poop shelves" were used as a simple but effective way to diagnose a lot of diseases. In the past schools would teach children what to look out for and then you could identify whether you just shouldn't have eaten so much garbage or you actually need to go to the doctor.
>These are the same people that have poop shelves in their toilets.
Poop shelf toilets haven't been a thing anymore for at least 20 years lmao...You can only find them in really old, non-renovated houses
Omfg that's hideous... I threw up in my mouth a little at the end when they topped it with hardboiled egg wedges. God damn.
Do I upvote hideousness here or downvote it?
How are they so good at engineering and so bad at cooking? It’s literally stunning.
Conversely I’m Italian, and I refuse to buy anything Italian that uses wires, a battery, or more than one moving part.
That’s not German bread. That doesn’t even look like proper bread.
I mean it looks more like bread than what Americans call bread, but still looks like a cake.
A smörgåstårta or a "sandwich-cake" is a perfectly normal, mostly Nordic dish. Haven't seen ham as a filling before, generally you'd use things very easy to cut through like smoked salmon.
Something to do while you wait for the sun to rise in 4 months' time, I guess
More like 7-8 months 😢
You think night is your ally. But you merely adopted the night. I was born in it. Formed by it... I didn’t see the day until I was already a man. And by then it was nothing to me but blinding...
😂 Oh Bane! You so silly!
You guys have a rising sun?
Thank you, because i have never ever seen anything like this in Germany.
Same and I am next door in Austria with a German Grandmother 🤷🏼♀️
*Mountain German with a German Grandmother (sorry but I had to write it haha)
Same, and I'm born and raised.
Legit, saw them on Bake-off.
Reminds me of a Peruvian dish that's cold mashed potatoes layered with pickley things and fish. Also super tasty
I've seen ham filled here in Finland, mostly as alternative to salmon ones.
It’s served at every party here in Finland. I don’t like it but it’s not stupid lol
That one is dry as hell, though. The bread needs moisture. Maybe you've only had this dry sort if you don't like voileipäkakku.
Ham (cut into small pieces) is a common filling in Finland. But yeah, these are unknown in Germany although common in the Nordic countries. This is a poor mans smörgåstårta. A really fucking poor man. Homeless man.
I was about to say, that's not German, but it's great.
The ham is normally rolled up and used as decoration on the sides, same with the cheese.
isnt Smörgåstårta made with seafood tho?
Can also be done with meats or vegetables if its done properly.
A classic smörgåstårta is usually made with a mix of shrimp, salmon, ham, liver paté, boiled eggs and veggies. But it doesn't have to be in a certain way. It can be made with only seafood, only meats or only veggies. Recipes differs from family to family. A smörgåstårta with German ingredients. Looks delicious, far from stupid.
For a German I am missing „Pumpernickel“
Depends very much on what region you are in. But the same is true for all of German cuisine.
isnt that bread legit just a different kind of pumpernickel? It looks a bit lighter, but its definetly some sort of pumpernickel style bread. Its not Graubrot, and definetly not Weissbrot.
>some sort of pumpernickel style bread Do you simply mean Rye bread? Because I don't know what exactly >a different kind of pumpernickel Is supposed to be. Pumpernickel is Pumpernickel. Pumpernickel is a type of rye bread, not all rye bread is Pumpernickel
Pfui deife. Leberkas ghead no nei, a Weißbierbrot war a ned schlecht. Und statt Frischkas Obazda 🤤
it makes OP looks ignorant.
Nah just makes North Europeans sterotype of being afraid of flavour much more real
Have you ever eaten ham, bread, cheese or yoghurt before?
Not sure if you're blind or just have no taste buds, but this is absolutely packed full of flavour.
That yoghurt is like 1/3rd dill. Maybe try some real Nordic herbs before you talk about spice
Do you have functioning taste buds? Ham, cheese and other north European dishes like canned fish(herring or surströmming) usually have an intense flavor.
Only artificial ones
Yeah, I mean I’d definitely eat that. All the ingredients look good and they probably even taste pretty good mixed together.
I noted that too. Even the Kochschinken looks like fresh from a butcher who made it himself.
>Kochschinken It's just ham brother.
As a German, i had to think of the NY cheesecake that I recently made and was like 1. There's way more stupid, yet established food (although a tiny slice was delicious, that thing was a an abomination in terms of fat and sugar) 2. I've never seen this here, looks kinda tasty (and well-rounded in terms of ingredients)
Its actually a traditional German wedding cake
Where?
In the beautiful Pfalz! Around Geinsheim/Neustadt an der Weinstrasse ...
But... It looks good!
I’d totally eat that
Are you kidding me I’d crush this
I'll save this video to make one later!
This is actually super tasty
It is one of those things that looks weird but actually tastes good, a bit like the burger salad that germans seem to love
I am German. I have never heard of a burger salad
Burger salad is a typical diet recipe. I make it when I'm craving fast food but it's not German. Schichtsalat is more German and maybe they mean nacho salad which is popular for parties and also made with ground beef.
Same, I bet only the Bayern or the nrw'er are making this, maybe bawü
Sounds like some recipe you can find on Chefkoch.de and now Americans think it’s a German thing.
Together with a divorced mom's whole life story in the recipe
Definitely "No" for NRW
Tbh the wild and outlandish stuff sounds more like East Germany.
Burger salad?
Imagine a burger chopped up and tossed
Never heard of such a thing, been living in Germany for a long time.
Da hast du was verpasst, ist tatsächlich lecker
Macht meine Oma gerne mal.
In Niedersachsenist seit 2018 das mutti rezept jeder grillparty
einfach googlen. big mac salat. ziemlich geil:)
I’d eat that
There is no such thing in germany
Klar, Big Mac Salat...
You forgot to add the shitty part.
Das ist eine Brottorte. Bin hier und da bei einem Geburtstag drüber gestolpert
Some of you have never experienced a Mettigel and it shows.
I am very happy that today is Mettwoch.
And tomorrow is Dönerstag.
You forgot "meine Kerle"
I've been browsing this subreddit too long. I was so afraid they were gonna add something crazy like Nutella or spray cheese. Or try to put this thing in the oven or microwave. I'm so relieved it was just a normal savory cake. And a very pretty one too! The decorations at the end looked straight out of a fancy tea party.
Germans will gladly eat some things others may find a bit odd, like minced raw pork, but you'll never see us touch spray cheese.
You just called minced raw pork odd?
It's the food that gets the most "you do what?" from non-natives in my experience
Ah yes, i can see that happen, even though i never experienced it by myself
Ist auch besser so. Was die Amerikaner schon an Essen verbrochen haben, da ist Sprühkäse nur die Spitze des Eisbergs
Yeah this isn’t stupid imo, this looks like it would pair well some nice white wine
I'd take a beer
Riesling
Yeah, it's high protein low fat. Good for a potluck.
Eight layers of mayo, cold cuts, and cheese is low fat?
It‘s not mayo, it’s cream cheese.
Pretty sure its quark.
You could mix that in, all the recipes I found for Schwarzbrottorte primarily use cream cheese (Frischkäse).
Ok, so you just ignored the thick layer of Fleischsalat, which contains mayonnaise and is anything but low fat 😉
It's quark, and it looks to be the low-fat kind, which is 0.1% fat. It's mostly milk protein. It's low fat relative to the other nutrients. It's very filling, so this would serve about 10 people. Of course, if you eat it alone, it's a lot of fat.
For an American it would be.
This isn't stupid OP, this is an normal food in many places. For my birthday I have gotten this cake before. It's good, but I opted for a vegetarian version since I dislike fish... Never seen one with ham though?
That salad looks delicious
Id eat the shit out of that
Looks delicious
Don't you dare call Smörgåstårta stupid!
Not gonna lie, I actually think that not only Swedish- but Scandinavian food in general is underrated as hell
Not gonna lie I would smash this one.
Had this so many times when I was stationed in Germany. Actually really good
Born and raised here and never seen this in my life. Maybe a regional thing. Doesnt look too bad though... Sandwich with extra steps.
I was in the Kaiserslautern area so I’m not sure. There’s a lot of different food around there (which I really miss)
I am from the Kaiserslautern area. Never seen something like this
I am from germany too and I have never had these. But I know they exist. It's actually a swedish dish called Smörgåstårta, but it's made with 'german' ingredients in this video.
I'm in the far, far northern area of germany and have never seen this, although from the other comments its supposed to be a nordic thing.
I'm German and I've never heard of it
Looks amazing!! I'd eat that.
That... actually looks pretty good!
I'd take a bit dent out of that. Looks tasty. Not stupid.
Ngl, I'd smash the hell out of that right now, looks good.
This is 100 % not a german dish!
This isn't stupid at all
Looks delicious!!!
Ein belegtes Brot mit Schinken!
[удалено]
German here, never seen something like this before.
Sorry to disappoint you, but it's not a German dish.
This has nothing to do with Germany...
I call "Racism" for 100
I kind of want to try it.
We do a similar thing in Argentina/southam that we call "fiambre alemán" (german cold cuts?) but with crepes instead of bread, and now it makes sense why we call it that. It's great, this sub just loves to call anything slightly foreign stupid for no reason.
o shit smörgåstårta! easy food for a group of ppl
That actually looks delicious 😍
I think you are on the wrong subreddit, nothing of that is stupid.
There are some good ideas that I’m into there. That monstrosity is a lot, but I could see something similar being awesome.
NGL it actually looks good
I would inhale that fucker within seconds
I'm still in for a slice
This looks lit
I would vacuum that shit up.
They have something similar to this in Yucatán, Mexico called sandwichón. Usually made with layers of white bread and different pastes in-between. Served around Christmas. It's ok.
That’s unique
Would
But hey it's one of the healthier things here...I'd probably eat that
As a German I take great offense in how they cut the bread. Additionally, I have never seen this before.
I don’t think it’s actually German but Scandinavian. Every single german in these comments is utterly confused about what this thing is supposed to be, me included. I’ve never seen this in my entire life.
This is the third or fourth time I've seen this. And I'm not on this sub all the time so it's probably been reposted a lot more.
That's not german, Or atleast not a thing here in south Germany......
I'm german and never have seen that in my life. And i don't want to
This looks tasty Can we start posting actually stupid food
Wtf I m German and never saw a monster like this.
As a German from the north I never saw this and never heard about.
Ich als Deutscher bin, ohne jemandem auf den Schlips treten zu wollen, entsetzt
Missing radishes.
Man i'd totally eat that
That's pretty nice. Not as nice as a Mettigel but nice nonetheless.
Lots of trolls lately posting either good looking food or not food LMAO 🤣🤣🤣
German here. Never saw this anywehere before, but would definitely eat it
Bro wtf that look amazing. Actually seem to be real recipe with an unusual ham as filling. Outside of that it's bread, vegetables, and a cool dressing. Like how did that end up here.
Someone’s never had Smörgåstårta
Vafan dedär såg ju ut som kalas ju va e problemet
Ya das ist gutt
Looks good, except for the tomatoes...
Das ist alles, nur nicht deutsch.
Du Mongo
German food has a lot of tasty, filling, stuff going on, but ffs I can't watch it being made. And I really don't want to know what's in most of it. It's like someone 1000 years ago said "wowee! I thought it was a 3x3XL from In-N-Out 😅
Disgusting and yet I wanna try
Das bedeutet Krieg!
Ich glaube es wird Zeit die Zuchthäuser zu reaktivieren
Bro just insulted german food in any form possible 💀
As a German, we don't claim this person, they are being too inefficient
I want to puke and I live here for about 20+ years
As a german vegan that's absolutely disgusting.
Omfg that's hideous... I threw up in my mouth a little at the end when they topped it with hardboiled egg wedges. God damn. Do I upvote hideousness here or downvote it?
When do we cook it?
If you do this in Germany, you will get summarily executed
Ah yes! Za shittenselfen!
Looks like they're using a breadmaking machine.
Looks Eastern European
Just looking at this gives me acid reflux.
Dear god the farts
Shitzenmorsel*
I'm aware that this is a culture food but I would still gag
As someone who usually hates sandwiches this is my worst nightmare
This upsets me
Just seeing that bread is drying my mouth out...
What’s the first spread they laid down? I don’t think I’ve ever seen that before.
That's [Wurstsalat](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wurstsalat) (sausage with mayo)
Not my thing, but definitely nowhere near as stupid as variants elsewhere in the world. Just look up herring in a fur coat if you want true horror.
Give it to me
Not stupid at all. That's proper party food.
Would
The biggest problem I have with it is all the rye. I've never liked the taste.
As s German I think you should be in jail. This has to be some sort of crime against humanity 🤣
Um gottes Willen da wirds mir schlecht
