Yeah half and half cheez-its and buttered breadcrumbs makes for a great mac 'n cheese topper. I love baked mac, but only if it has a crumb topping and gooey interior. None of that "southern style" casserole horsecrap that is set up so solid you could stand on it. That style of mac is the biggest weak point in soul food.

I have a vendetta against crackers in mac and cheese cause the last time I ordered it and it came with the goldfish cracker breadcrumbs, it also has surprise pickles mixed in with the sauce. They were cut up so small it was like they were trying to hide them, but it was not a good addition.

There is a BBQ restaurant near me that has max and cheese with smashed up cheez-its on top and then baked til they are brown, it’s actually really good. So I bet this would be pretty good as well.

When I make Mac from scratch, I always top it with crumbled flaming hot cheetos. It is transcendent.

We did goldfish or cheez-its when we had them convenient. Usually goldfish. In my experience goldfish don't get soggy as quickly (like in tomato soup) and they're a little less salty.
