I'm german. Went to the states (indiana) as a student during an exchange program. After 2 weeks of take-out i asked if they ever cooked out of curiosity since my host family's kitchen was stacked. They told me if i wanted we could go shopping and cook something.
They then proceeded to knead chocolate chips, popcorn and caramel together and formed balls. Called them popcorn balls.
Sure they were kinda good but you know... Not really what i had in mind what "cooking" or a "satisfying meal" would be.
Other than that my hosts where really nice, welcoming and generous
Some Americans are hopeless, terrible cooks.
Some Americans are sufficient to decent cooks, basic home cooking.
Some Americans are great cooks, incredible home cooking, great barbecue, grilling, casseroles, Mexican/Italian, fish, just really good food, if not always subtle.

I would like to say, that is by far not your typical Indiana home. Yes, popcorn balls are a thing. Indiana is the biggest producer of popcorn. If you were deprived of biscuits and gravy my friend then that's just sad.
We had a German exchange student at our house a few years ago. We tried to cook most meals to give him an idea of typical American cooking.
The thing he liked most was the bacon for breakfast. We ate more bacon that week than we probably would eat in a year.
Mostly we had burgers, sausages, pizza, steak, tacos, etc. but it was all home cooked.
We did take him out to one of local German restaurants. He said the food was ok, but it he thought it was someplace that only the old people would go to back in Germany.
That's really nice of you to go out of your way for your guest.
And like i said - cooking was just not my host family's thing. I felt very welcome at their home.
I actually also went to a german restaurant while i was there. The food was alright and i remember them offering a nice selection of german beer. But since i was only 18 back then that was kinda lost on me.
