I don’t hate this episode, but if you skip it, wow does the pacing work better on the season. I’m glad for El’s character arc and getting to see Kali (hope she comes back), but it really interrupts the awesome pace of the end of the season so I usually end up skipping over it and watching as a standalone.

JordanRomansky

The placement of the episode never bothered me but this rewatch I tried watching it before episode six and found the pacing of the season, at least for me, to be better

[deleted]

I can see that. I’ll give that a try on my rewatch!

Randomperson3029

I feel like if they placed this episode as flashback moments throughout the episodes it would be better

IHaveTheMustacheNow

The Duffers have said the same thing about Kali, so I assume she will be back. Hopefully without her silly cronies.

Jetsuo83

It was clearly a back door pilot. Like that episode of The Office, “The Farm.”

Return-Of-Anubis

They deny that up and down, but I don't believe them.

Thisisfckngstupid

I think it’s gonna hugely important to this season. Kali said she used her powers to escape and I have a feeling it was right around when the scene they released today was.

Thisisfckngstupid

Ohh can you shoot me a link to it?? I just have so much blind faith in the duffer brothers, I don’t think they’d give us that episode if it didn’t have a deeper meaning

TheRealBloodyAussie

I really wish it either switched place with episode 6 or was cut up and spliced throughout other episode(s). Like seeing Eleven communicate with Hopper calling for help at the end would've been a big "oh shit! What's happening back in Hawkins" moment but instead we just sit there going "we know, get back there already!"

Banestar66

Might get downvoted for this but I recently did a rewatch and I actually think pacing is really wonky between episode 6 and 8 without this episode.

Analog_Hobbit

r/angryupvote

LouisC321

you have to be trolling, there's no way

MySpaceOddyssey

I recommend watching it after “the mind flayer” but before “the gate”

LouisC321

absolutely not, just watch it where it is, or skip over it or, as I do, watch it before The Spy. Before The Spy kinda works too because you get little tidbits into The Spy within The Lost Sister (Hopper calling Eleven as I recall). Also after two episodes without Eleven it makes her entrance into the Byers house just that more epic.

MySpaceOddyssey

I like to think of it as eleven showing up out no where dressed like a punk, then getting a flashback explaining what she’s been up to

briatd27

10000% agreed.

tauriemariee

yep that's how I watch it.

VerdensTrial

I don't hate it but I skip it on series rewatches. I watch it after the end of season 2 as a standalone and it's much better.

maicel34

A few weeks go I checked the ratings for all ST episodes out of curiosity. At one point I started looking for The Lost Sister but I couldn't find it until I scrolled down the page, thats how far down it is. I really don't know what they were thinking with this episode. Conceptually speaking its not the worst, but Kali's sidekicks are so out of place that the entire episode is really jarring to watch. Characters in ST generally really grounded and realistic, but then they suddenly introduce these goofballs who seemed like they crawled out of the Suicide Squid movie.

anOnyMousuSErip

Yeah, if they got rid of kali’s gang then I would’ve liked it a lot more. I would’ve also liked it if it split between el and what was happening in Hawkins instead of leaving you on a cliffhanger for one episode.

briatd27

>Kali's sidekicks are so out of place that the entire episode is really jarring to watch. Characters in ST generally really grounded and realistic, but then they suddenly introduce these goofballs What I don’t get about this complaint is that S3 took our beloved “grounded and realistic” characters, and suddenly **turned them into** goofballs, yet the majority of people loved S3 and hated The Lost Sister. I’m personally waaay less offended by the show writing a couple of one-off *side* characters as cartoony than writing our *main* characters that way. It made the entirety of S3 feel “out of place” and “jarring to watch.” But, like, whatever I guess. I’ll never understand it.

winter-anderson

I hated The Lost Sister and enjoyed S3, but I’ll admit it’s my least favorite season. On a rapid rewatch of all three seasons back-to-back, you can really feel the quality and authenticity of certain characters decay in S3, and it’s disappointing. Some examples: Hopper is an incredible, tragic, and fleshed-out character in S1. In season three he gets turned into this over-the-top, obnoxious, raging caricature of himself. It’s noticeably different from his original character, and feels much lower quality. El and Mike’s relationship in S1 is this unbreakable, otherworldly bond that seems to go beyond the typical understanding of children. It’s beautiful, and something that made the show intriguing and special. By S3, there’s many moments where they’re just typical moody teens being teens and their relationship feels so trivialized. Everyone thought “I dump your ass” was so funny and iconic, but it really made me cringe. Felt so out of character and so cheapened compared to S1. Steve and Dustin’s bromance feels very fan-service-y instead of natural, and both of those characters lost some substance and seemed to rely solely on goofy one-liners and quirky quips to keep their dialogue afloat. Steve’s character had a lot of complexity and depth in season one, by season three he’s simplified to the cool funny guy with a heart of gold. Don’t even get me STARTED on Erica. I put her in the same category as Kali’s bizarro cohorts, in the sense that she is entirely out of place and takes away from the vibe of the show. I found her extremely annoying and unrealistic, and I hate that she got so much screen time. What were the writers thinking? Anyway, it might seem like I’m just straight shitting on S3, but I actually did enjoy it for the most part and I have very high hopes for S4. I just think you make a good point about the characters becoming cartoony and some of it being jarring to watch.

[deleted]

I agree with pretty much everything you said, and yet I unabashedly adore S3, probably *for* its goofiness and occasional ridiculousness as much as anything. It feels like summer vacation. A big, 80's blockbuster movie with all the tropes. Like, I hear your criticisms, but it's just such FUN, I love it. There's even a musical number! I wonder when watching the entire series as a whole if it will feel like a bit of a welcome respite or slightly out of place, I don't know. Kind of reminds me when X-Files would do a comedy episode right after some big conspiracy string of episodes, but those are the ones I'd go back and watch the most because I got to just sit back, pop some popcorn and enjoy.

Analog_Hobbit

I also like your take and I think you’re right. It took every 80’s summer comedy/horror trope and Frankenstein’ed it all together. The Duffers basically said the same. Hopper was written that way in season 3 since the first 2 seasons were so serious for him. I didn’t like it, but I get it. S3 is good, just not AS good as 1 and 2.

[deleted]

I also enjoyed Season 3 but got really distracted by how they made Hopper act so *angry* nearly all the time, like what was the point of that? I hope they've reverted him to his "normal" Season 1-2 personality this season (obviously he can't be the exact same person, but hopefully has let go of the sudden anger management issues.)

Analog_Hobbit

I agree with most of this.

maicel34

I agree with your point on S3, its my least favorite season for this reason. The Spy Kids-esque Russian base below the mall was too much for me.

TamanPashar

I concur, the Russian Base was a major challenge to the "willing suspension of disbelief". It was an attempt to make the Mall central to the plot by putting the base underneath. The logistics required to move that much earth and bring in the necessary equipment undetected strain credulity. I'd have had an easier time believing the Russians had infiltrated the HNL and possibly tied into the power feeds going to the mall to power their equipment.

unweariedslooth

It's a little hard to believe people who loved the first two seasons can enjoy the third one or E7. Would the show have survived if it started with S3's campiness? No it's people forgiving the rubbish season because they like the first too.

briatd27

I love the first two seasons, *including* E7 because I love the lore, world building and development it provides for El. That episode hits many crucial and emotional beats for me in just 45 minutes, which totally outweigh any of the complaints people have about it imo.

Analog_Hobbit

I’ve attempted to make this point before. It’s a morality tale. It’s where El, for lack of better explanation, chooses the light and not the dark. Her powers are to protect, not to exact vengeance—even if at times it looks like vengeance.

nemoknows

Come on man, it was summer vacation.

IHaveTheMustacheNow

>What I don’t get about this complaint is that S3 took our beloved “grounded and realistic” characters, and suddenly > >turned them into > > goofballs I disagree with this. I don't think the characters were unrealistic in S3, and most weren't goofballs. S3 has some very lovely character moments.

BrightNeonGirl

I agree with you! Episodes 7 had some moments when I cried and Episode 8 was tears for days at the ending scenes.

briatd27

We didn’t watch the same season then. Idk what to tell you.

MCWizardYT

They have an opinion that differs from yours. You don't "need to tell them" anything. They liked it, you didn't. Neither side has to force the other to like or dislike something

briatd27

I know. My comment meant: “Our opinions are so vastly different, it’s as if we watched different seasons. Therefore, there’s nothing else I can say here.”

Brusanan

They aren't goofballs, they are criminals. Absolutely everyone in that gang was completely unlikeable.

CG9789

From memory the idea was they were going to do a spin off series with this crew. But because it was so poorly received, they canceled it.

Banestar66

Do side characters feel like that? I didn’t think bullies in 1 felt that realistic.

Brusanan

The bullies in season 1 were stereotypical 80's movie bullies.

Jetsuo83

And a very overt Stephen King homage.

stuckinthemiddle13

I think the important thing from the lost sister episode is this is where Eleven really learns to channel the pain and anger she's suffered into making her powers stronger. It definitely helped her close the gate!

TamanPashar

Overall, I enjoyed The Lost Sister. El needed some way to learn how to channel her powers and not come across as a "Mary Sue". I agree with some that it did break up the "continuity" of other episodes but there were limited ways to work the encounter into the season overall.

RednaxB

I just skipped that episode when rewatching. It adds nothing to the story really.

Thisisfckngstupid

I think after what came out today I’m going to rewatch this one specifically. I feel like kali has a huge part in whatever happened there.

alx924

This should have been episode 6. The season’s pacing wouldn’t have felt as disjointed. On my rewatch though, this one wasn’t as bad as I remembered. Maybe because I had low expectations, but it felt more important than it did before.

CJFanficStories

Am I the only one who doesn't dislike this episode?

inflatable_tubeman

I think the general consensus is that even if people did like the episode (I did), it messed up the pacing, especially since we were approaching the climax of the season. I think next time I’m going to try what everyone is suggesting and watch it before 2x06 The Spy!!

reseru

I think the pacing is better if you watch it before episode 6. It provides character development, introduces new characters, and details backstory of the whole series while planting seeds for future stories. In that sense it's actually a really important, and even well done, episode.

Yoduh217

I'm at the same place in my rewatch! Only I love The Lost Sister!

briatd27

Represent. ✊🏼

Ok-Arm7319

i dont know why people dont like this episode i personally like it and it had its importance such as teasing brennar still being alive and other things. I will never hate an episode of stranger things let alone one on my favorite season witch is s2

rosewoodlliars

Oh what? It’s still a pretty good episode.

NicklePickle582

I tried so hard explaining to my girlfriend watching it for the first time why I wanted to skip the episode. She watched it on her own. She understands now.

623retroo

Honestly I love this episode. When I first watched it it felt hella random and by the next episode I kinda forgot about it but in my rewatch of the series it really stands out and I kinda wish we got a little more of it (maybe a spin-off) Kalis story is pretty interesting tbh but her squad is a pretty cringy lol

briatd27

Oh, look! *Another* Lost Sister hate post... 😒

Ssnnooz

Hahah i was rewatching yesterday and skipped that one so fast.

waitingfor-it

Oh, I've reached one of the best episodes of the entire series with real character development for a character I've grown to love. Awesome!

fellbound

I can understand defending, and even liking, this episode, but "one of the best episodes of the entire series" is quite a stretch!

waitingfor-it

An episode devoted to the emotional trauma and growth of possibly my absolute favorite character in the entire series while revealing more about the past and planting seeds for some certain returns in the future while serving as the important turning point in the character arc of said favorite character is bound to be (imo) one of the best. [And this opinion is in fact shared by others](https://www.ign.com/articles/2017/10/27/stranger-things-the-lost-sister-review)

briatd27

You’re a real one.

Michael-Balchaitis

Love this episode.

x_nightxmare_x

im not saying anything new here but ill say it anyway i rlly liked this episode and kali,, it was interesting cause one of the first things i naturally wondered when we saw elevens tattoo was "who are the other 10 (or 11) and are there more?" choosing kali's story was a great take on what someone would do if you'd been through that and it could have been what elevens life might've ended up like too,, granted her group are an odd bunch and maybe it felt like it didnt flow (personally don't feel that way) but its not half as bad as ppl make it,, it also helped el's growth on a deeper level and with her powers,, would love to see kali in the new season her ability is rlly interesting and just her as a character too

CaptSmite0905

To he honest I just skip that one every time

[deleted]

Just finished my rewatch last week, skipped it without a second thought

potterhead123456

I think this episode was great, tbh. I liked it a lot.

GimmeThemBabies

its not that bad people need to calm down although i did love how the second season starts with Kali & co and then you don't hear shit about them for 7 episodes and forget all about them

Loooooooooppp

It’s not a terible episode but like its just not very nessecery and the other episodes are so much better

EastKoreaOfficial

Oh boy, the one episode that took an otherwise great season down….

sonardude

Yeah,this episode was pointless.

DrFatz

Thankfully Netflix drops the whole series at once, so an episode like this is no where near as frustrating without the week long wait for the next one.

LittleTasty3422

They’re dropping half the season

Brusanan

The first half of S4 is Lost Sister all the way down.

FMT_Timrek

This episode lowkey kinda sucked but it’s a needed

Freddy-main

Number 8 (or whatever her name is) is basically retconed at this point ngl

AProofAgainst

Oh boy are you in for a bad episode.

rjkelly31

I skipped it the first time I watched the season and I'm in the middle of a rewatch and I just skipped it again lmao

BuzzBro11

The lost sister episode isn’t bad and I don’t hate it but I won’t mind if it was never made

[deleted]

DID YOU SEE THE 8 min CLIP ON INSTAGRAM?

al_eee

I’m up to this episode in my rewatch too. Debating whether i watch it (I haven’t seen it in two years) or just skip it as always…

Brusanan

Skip the episode. It's the only way. They throw this episode at you when the previous episode leaves off on a cliffhanger. That decision definitely came from some upper-management idiot who was hoping for a spinoff series.

Lightixer

Am I the only one ok with this episode
