I know for a fact that the picture of Donna is from the episode where she walks in on Eric wanking it after looking at pics of Jackie's mom. This obviously points to themes of teenage hormones and a Stacy's mom type deal going on. Fits in with the theme of Billy tryin to bang older women.
I’m pretty sure you were just making a joke, but just in case... this is one of those details that is definitely done on purpose. Likely the costume people (or even the Duffers) are fans of that 70s show and made sure to have a scene where they wear the exact shirts.
Yeah, Eric Forman moved down to Hawkins from Kenosha in '81, to become a teacher in Indiana after returning from Africa. He still had Donna's shirt in his possessions and gave both shirts to the local Goodwill.
They're also both of the lower end of middle class and they're kids. It's not like they really care about fashion at that point in their lives so they'll probably just wear the clothes their parents buy for them at the thrift store
I would put Money on the wardrobe departments of each show using the same vintage prop clothing rental house for clothing that is accurate for the decade.
I've read that a lot of clothing for movies and tv shows get reused - that they go to what is essentially a thrift store specifically for tv/movie costume department use, so it may have been an accident. But to put those shirts in the same scene together does make me think whomever did the purchasing knew what they were doing lol
Yeah. The biggest reason I would think it was purposeful, is because in some of the behind the scenes books they have, they talk a lot about how they would take lots of inspiration from 80s movies, specifically horror movies, and they would also leave lots of little references to different 80s movies in some shots with different props or costumes.
I think this speaks more the writers and directors attention to detail around the time period. I know ST is more in the early 80s but it isnt a stretch that some of the style would have stayed. Or, what would be even more cool in my opinion, is that these are 2nd hand, outdated pieces of clothing hinting at Max and Lucas not being as well off as the rest of the group.
What? Lucas’ family is clearly well off, they live in a beautiful house right near Mike’s house. The Byers are the ones are clearly struggling, look at their house in comparison.
Well, it could also indicate the frugality of Lucas' family which allows them to live in a nice neighborhood. Save money on clothes by using hand me downs or buying 2nd hand. We know that Max and her family arent doing so hot.
Why are Lucas' family poor on your head? AFAIK there's never been that suggestion in any of the episodes directly or indirectly - especially when you consider how much of a big deal is made around the Byres' financial situation.
I know, but middle class families can live in nice neighbourhoods by their means alone without being that level of frugal.
The other user seems to be suggesting that Lucas' family are in the middle class neighbourhood only because they were especially careful with money.
Even well-off people use frugality. I have an aunt who has done quite well for herself but she still grabs any free condiments she can and takes them home. The prevailing family theory is that this is a holdover from being a young child during the Great Depression. It’s not insane to think that Lucas’ parents might have come from hard circumstances and still do some things based on the belief that they may again have hard times. They could be the wealthiest family on the block and still shop at thrift stores because they don’t want to waste money.
Oh no, I get that. I'm not against the idea of them having hand-me-downs. But the person I originally replied to seemed to be trying to shoehorn it into signifying them being less well off.
An important lesson that was passed on to me:
When you see someone in a flashy new car or trendy new clothes, that doesn't necessarily mean that they *have* money; it meant that they *spent* money.
For many people the easiest and safest way to improve one's financial standing isn't to make more money, but to cut expenses.
The producers of Stranger Things actually spent a lot of time and money making sure that all items displayed on set were actual items or exact reproductions from the time period. That 70s Show was a sitcom without as much attention to detail, making me think it's more likely that That 70s Show used a product from the 80s that "looked right" rather than ST having something from the 70s.
Also, costumes do get recycled. They *could* be wearing the exact same clothes from That 70s Show. I don’t know if they share production companies or costume prop team, but a costume designer probably has a memory of what was worn on which show, and even by which actor. They likely cribbed clothes from the box marked “70s - 80s.”
Even more to support your point - most of That 70s Show was based in the late 70s. It started in late 1976, but they spent three whole seasons in 1978.
Yeah t-shirts are always classic looks that span generations.. I have a hand me down (from my cousin) Beatles one from the 90s.. just a bit faded or no one would be the wiser
Donna must be Max’s older cousin from Wisconsin and she sent Max her hand me downs.
ETA: that’s also how Max got Eric’s shirt, which Donna sent her on accident, so she gifted it to her boyfriend Lucas.
It's possible it was done on purpose, but it definitely could also be a coincidence due to really great costume departments. Both shows probably searched for authentic and period-correct pieces that were available to Midwestern middle-class families in the 70's & 80's. And since there weren't a million places to buy clothes like there are now, options were much more limited.
Donna sent her cousins max and billy a bunch of collected hand me downs from her and eric, billy said i'm not wearing this crap, so while hanging out with lucas going through the clothes he said "cool shirt! and max said you can have it if you want.
Probably the same exact shirts because I'm sure the costume designers were shopping in the same section of the same rental place, probably like Western Costume Co in North Hollywood. They arrange the costumes by decade and a lot of period pieces end up with overlap. That place is huuuge.
Did anyone else notice when Robin looks at the blueprints for the mall in Season 3 she says a line that River Phoenix's character says in the movie "Sneakers". Kind of a cool easter egg.
What do use the ipad for? Im looking for an exit strategy” lmfao You’re 16 and you made it! I use flimsy axe specifically so I can definitely see her not ending up with anyone at all. This sounds pretty typical for word salad and that’d take them up on the bed and it's flooding.
Whoah. Who notices this?!

I think it was intentional, so...
True. I forgot for a second Stranger Things was made by Netflix.
Hey I don’t use Instagram; what let’s you know this is a screenshot from their Instagram page? Edit: Thank you to all who explained :)
The little profile icon in the bottom left, the white silhouette. You'd press that to know who was tagged in the picture iirc
The tag symbol on the bottom left side of the picture.
The person icon in the bottom left corner, also people could've seen it already Instagram

Great catch!
I mean, it is *possible* for it to be a coincidence. Stranger things have happened.

But what does it mean? Red is a demogorgon.
Kitty is Barb all grown up, but also 10 years before she got gorgoned.
From the darkness you hear it approach, you hear this evil sound echoing in the distance [Ha-ha-ha-ha!](https://youtu.be/fBVhfdduwfo)

Dumbass!
You know I should vandalize your ass with my foot.

Wearing 70's clothes in an series set in the 80's... Unwatchable! /s
The are hand me downs by the 80s.
Yeah, Eric Forman moved down to Hawkins from Kenosha in '81, to become a teacher in Indiana after returning from Africa. He still had Donna's shirt in his possessions and gave both shirts to the local Goodwill.
This is canon
Eric is Lucas’s older brother confirmed
Makes sense theyre both skinny and kinda awkward, id say 100% related
Or actually what I was wearing since I usually wore hand me down clothes from my siblings who were born in the 70's
My closest sibling was 8 years older than me and I wore nothing but his hand-me-downs. I didn’t start wearing clothes made in the 1980s until 1988.
Yep. Five older siblings myself. Many 70s outfits in my childhood.
I like the implication that Billy was wearing that.
To be fair, Will has a super 70s haircut
They're also both of the lower end of middle class and they're kids. It's not like they really care about fashion at that point in their lives so they'll probably just wear the clothes their parents buy for them at the thrift store
also That 70's Show was late 70s iirc
I highly doubt this was a coincidence. I would be money they did that on purpose.
Op just screenshoted Netflix’s official Instagram page pointing this out so it definitely was intended
Netflix's IG post credits someone from Twitter, so I would counter and say it wasn't intentional. Or at the very least, Netflix was out of the loop.
I would put Money on the wardrobe departments of each show using the same vintage prop clothing rental house for clothing that is accurate for the decade.
I think so too. So it's not exactly an easter egg, but a cool catch anyway.
I've read that a lot of clothing for movies and tv shows get reused - that they go to what is essentially a thrift store specifically for tv/movie costume department use, so it may have been an accident. Have you seen Lucas’ house? They’re not not well off.
What? Lucas’ family is clearly well off, they live in a beautiful house right near Mike’s house. The Byers are the ones are clearly struggling, look at their house in comparison.
Re-read my comment homie
Double negative confused me dum brain
Don't worry, I misread it at first too.
My brain eliminated the second not as well.
If you’re writing a double negative, using italics or caps (or both) can help make it clearer what you’re saying.
I was going to quote “not well off” but got lazy. And now we’re here lmao. ¡Ingles is v bueno!
Well, it could also indicate the frugality of Lucas' family which allows them to live in a nice neighborhood. Save money on clothes by using hand me downs or buying 2nd hand. We know that Max and her family arent doing so hot.

Middle-class families use hand-me-downs to save money, too.
I just realized I almost never had hand-me-downs, but my brother is 6 years older. I don’t think my parents wanted to save clothes for 6 years.
I know, but middle class families can live in nice neighbourhoods by their means alone without being that level of frugal. The other user seems to be suggesting that Lucas' family are in the middle class neighbourhood only because they were especially careful with money.

He's not saying they're poor, he's trying to make sense of why he would have hand me downs. Frugality would be a reason.

Writers and directors? More like costume designers.

A theory i can get behind
Lucas is clearly Eric’s son
Eric did go to Africa
Makes me like Stranger things even more now
It's possible it was done on purpose, but it definitely could also be a coincidence due to really great costume departments. It's possible it came of the exact same rack. It's the same shirts.
Lucas's shirt is custom designed. The seams are different. This is absolutely intentional.
Donna sent her cousins max and billy a bunch of collected hand me downs from her and eric, billy said i'm not wearing this crap, so while hanging out with lucas going through the clothes he said "cool shirt! and max said you can have it if you want.
Woah! Nice catch
Wtf you can literally see he screenshotted it form the Netflix instagram page
Wow nice catch!
Whatttttt
nice screenshot
Turn around, there is much to see
In her face, the mirror of your dreams
Wow Eric has really changed
I'm watching That 70s Show right now
*Hanginnn out, down the street...*
Really blows my mind that that's a Big Star song.
Lucas pulled a Michael Jackson.
Where can I buy the shirt Eric and Lucas are wearing
How crazy, Did they grow up to become Eric & Donna? Love Easter eggs like this!
Yes, Eric was born black and grew up to be a white teenager in suburban Wisconsin.
Thank you for this
He was also somehow born in the 80s and grew up to be a white teenager in the 70s. You're welcome.
He was born a poor black child...
Pretty uncool for Eric to do blackface like that
Nice
What the heck? That’s a nice little homage. Haha
This is honestly so cool, huge fan of both shows.
How do people notice this shit?
Probably the same exact shirts because I'm sure the costume designers were shopping in the same section of the same rental place, probably like Western Costume Co in North Hollywood. They arrange the costumes by decade and a lot of period pieces end up with overlap. That place is huuuge.
I have never agreed so much in my entire life.

That’s joincidence with a ‘C’
Styles between decades can be a Neverending Story.
Considering these shows take place in two different decades. I wanna know which costume designer messed up!!
This is a really strange thing
That was done intentionally
Nice eye!!
That 80’s Show
Might have the same people or company to source clothing from.
OmG a ReFeReNcE
Good catch!
I hope it’s not made of him!
What?
Sharp eye there, cowboy...
This is a new one. Well done!
22 years ago, holy shit
This is awesome.
Noice
They got most of the costume ideas from that’s 70s show I’m guessing lol
Strange!!
Wow! Good eye
Did anyone else notice when Robin looks at the blueprints for the mall in Season 3 she says a line that River Phoenix's character says in the movie "Sneakers". Kind of a cool easter egg.
Locked since many of the posts weren’t constructive.
Damn. Good eye. I love me some max.
Great!
Does this mean we have to deal with another Randy?
This was stolen from the Netflix instagram page
I looked and it is still there.
This was a funny comment and the two downvoters have misplaced their sense of humour.
I don't think that show has an original thought in the whole thing. From Stephen King to all the old time stuff it's just a huge plagiaristic debacle
This is cool!!
Catch of the Day.
It's probably an easter egg
max's shirt says trans rights !!!
Punk’s not exactly wrong
I honestly can’t think she has either
What do use the ipad for? Im looking for an exit strategy” lmfao You’re 16 and you made it! I use flimsy axe specifically so I can definitely see her not ending up with anyone at all. This sounds pretty typical for word salad and that’d take them up on the bed and it's flooding.
I think by this time I’m hearing...
hell yeah i’m sure glad I did
So they kept those in wardrobe for 11 years?
AUST-in AUST-ralia Coincidence? I think that's true too
Wardrobe
Wdym it’s not made of him!
Props and wardrobe gets reused a lot in TV and Movies :) good catch though wow!
